This brochure has all the information you need to ensure
that your children have a fun, enriching and safe summer.
Hudson Valley Community College has been sponsoring children’s programs for more than 25 years. From enrichment
to athletics, from technology to theater, we have something that will appeal to your child’s interest. Last year, we
enrolled more than 800 students in our programs.
In the pages that follow, you will find information on the Technology Enrichment Program, Theater Workshop,
Circus Theatricks, Athletic Camps and Summer Academy.
There are a variety of topics and formats to choose from, and you will find them all in this brochure, along with
registration and other information.

Athletic camps are sponsored by the Office of Community
and Professional Education in partnership with the college’s
Athletic Department.
ATHLETIC CAMPS
The 2014 Summer Athletic Camps are designed to
provide an opportunity for boys and girls to acquire
knowledge, develop interest, learn technique and
improve skills in a variety of sports.
All camps are under the direction of a head
coach with a sufficient number of assistant
coaches to provide low coach-to-camper
ratios. Campers will be divided into
groups according to age and ability.

LUNCH (Full-day campers only)
Campers are expected to bring their own lunch. Limited
snacks and beverages will be available for purchase.
Refrigeration is not available. All campers should bring a
labeled water bottle daily.
Campers must be dropped off and
picked up at the McDonough Sports
Complex Lobby. Children should not be
dropped off prior to posted start times. There
will not be supervision available until that time.
Camps will end promptly at the designated time. Coaches
will be available for 15 minutes after their individual camp
ends. Children must be picked up by that time, unless enrolled in extended care, and parents must come inside to
sign out their child. All campers must provide their own
transportation.
INSURANCE
Every camper is covered by an excess accident insurance
plan. It provides excess medical and accidental death protection during camp participation and also while traveling to
and from Hudson Valley Community College.
The Summer Athletic Camps are staffed by Hudson Valley
Community College coaches, instructors and players as well
as coaches and players from local colleges and high schools.
Our athletic trainer and director, Sharon Brodie, will be on
duty during camp hours.

James Bowles, Emily Brown, Travis Cooke, Matthew Fuda,
Jessalyn Hotaling, Christopher Jura, Jefferson LaMountain,
Jesse McGuire, Michael Meuhling, Derek Minkler,

Extended Hours for Athletic Camp Programs
We are pleased to announce the addition of extended
hours for summer athletic camp programs.
Half-Day Camps (Except Golf due to off-site meetings)
Morning extended care is available from 8 - 9 a.m. for
an additional charge of $10/week. There is no afternoon
extended care for half-day camps unless your child is
registered in an afternoon Summer Academy Program.
If you need a full-day program for your child, please check
our Summer Academy offerings beginning on page 9.
Students who sign up for a morning athletic camp and
afternoon Summer Academy class must pay the $10 fee
for supervised lunch (lunch is NOT provided). Camp staff
will transport children to the Viking Child Care Building
(DCC) for lunch and the afternoon program.
Full-Day Camps
Morning extended care is available from 8 - 9 a.m. for
an additional charge of $10/week. Afternoon extended
care is available from 3 - 4 p.m. for an additional charge
of $10/week. Extended care will be held in the McDonough
Field House.

The Adventure program is a series of activities designed
to challenge participants on both an individual and group
basis. Presented by trained instructors, the program encourages teamwork, cooperation, focus and responsibility.
Adventure program campers work together to successfully
maneuver through obstacles and creatively solve challenges.

Learn more about the sport of distance running. The focus
of this co-ed camp is to help each runner improve their
knowledge and enjoyment of the sport. Campers will
learn how to train intelligently and improve their running
mechanics. They will learn race strategies, proper nutrition,
cross training, running drills and other methods that
successful runners utilize to achieve their own personal
and team goals.

Dodgeball

This camp will provide participants the opportunity to
improve on their dodging, catching and throwing skills.
Different rules, skills and techniques of the game will be
taught throughout the camp. We will be playing many
different versions of dodgeball which will lead up to a
dodgeball tournament at the end of the week. Equipment
needed: Workout clothes and sneakers.

Instruction in the fundamental skills needed to play football
will be covered. This is a non-contact camp that also will
serve to enhance the knowledge of the basic rules of the
game. All in attendance will learn to pass, kick, punt, snap,
catch, block and tackle. Equipment: work out gear, water
bottle with camper's name clearly labeled, cleats and/or
sneakers, NO PADS OR HELMET WILL BE USED.

This camp is designed for participants who enjoy unique
team sport games such as cavotta ball, handball, speedball,
cage ball, tiger ball etc. Throughout the camp, team building
activities and strategies will be explored through competitive, fun games. It is the perfect camp for participants who
like to be competitive, working with others and having fun
doing so. Equipment needed: Workout clothes and sneakers.

game, including grip, stance, swing, rules, terminology and
etiquette. Equipment: Bags and clubs (driver, 3, 5, 7 and 9

Center and one day at a local course. Schedule will be
handed out the first day. First day is held at HVCC.

This camp provides participants the opportunity to experience the world of track and field. It is perfect for those who
enjoy running, being active, like to exercise or just want to
try something different. Through various running and field
events, team building activities and games, we will focus
on proper stretching, running and exercise techniques that
create a strong discipline and better understanding of the
sport; all of which can be used long after camp has ended.

Learning and reinforcing fundamental skills of scholastic
wrestling will be the basis of this one-week camp. Campers
will learn and review set-ups and takedowns from the
neutral position, breakdowns from the top and options
for escaping and reversing from the bottom.
Wrestlers will be divided into groups based on age, weight
and ability. Equipment needed: workout clothes, sneakers
or wrestling shoes.

CIRCUS THEATRICKS
Circus Theatricks
Tuition: $250 per one-week session
Ages 6-15
We are pleased to have Sean (Seano) Fagan back at
Hudson Valley Community College this summer for four
weeks of Circus Theatricks. Whether you’ve experienced
fun with Seano in the past or you’re new to the circus world,
this class is for you. Beginning campers will be introduced
to the art of juggling, tumbling, partner acrobatics, magic
and the secrets and skills of circus clowns. Returning
campers, get ready to be challenged and further your
skills in the circus arts.
The instructional component of these programs will run
from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. with a half hour for lunch each day.
Our counseling staff will provide supervision of participants
from 8 - 9 a.m. and 3 - 4 p.m. each day for those students
who arrive early and stay late. Students should bring their

THEATER WORKSHOP
Do you love to act, sing, dance or tell jokes? Do you see
yourself behind the scenes, as a director, stage manager
or props designer?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, the Summer Youth Theater Workshop is for you! The workshop will
take you through the entire process of producing a musical
theater piece, from creating the characters, writing the script
and developing songs, to rehearsing and performing in the
final production, which will take place on the last day of the
workshop. No experience is required, just a desire to jump
in and put on a show! We will be restructuring our program
to accommodate both new and experienced performers.
The group will be split early in the first week based on
experience level.

Liv Cummins and Sandy McKnight

Liv is a performer, writer and educator who works with
young people in venues such as TADA!, the Broadway
Theater Institute, Lucy Moses School, and the Elaine
Kaufman Center for the Arts at Lincoln Center. Sandy is
a producer, writer, musician and teacher who has written
more than 500 songs and produced more than 100 recordings. He has written several scripts for VH1’s “Top Ten
Countdown” as well as pilots for a new TV series.

TECHNOLOGY ENRICHMENT
Technology Enrichment Program Bethlehem Middle School
The Technology Enrichment Program is held at Bethlehem Middle
School. This program gives students a chance to discover their
interests and talents through hands-on, activity-packed learning
sessions. Students will be given the opportunity to explore several
dynamic areas.
The program will meet Monday through Friday for one week.
Campers will have a half-hour for lunch and are expected to bring
their own lunch and beverage.

MODULE DESCRIPTIONS
Product Design and 3D Printing
Have you ever wondered how objects are designed and 3D printed. This
course will allow students to take on the role of an inventor and see their
designs come to life. Students will design their projects while learning
3D computer modeling essentials. Students will design and print two
activities during camp week. Would you believe that you could actually
draw a product on the computer and have it produced right before your
eyes? Sign up to produce your own design!

Up, Up and Away (Rocketry with a Splash)
Blast-off the summer with water rocketry!!! Water rockets are one of the
most exciting hands-on science activities around. Students will convert
empty plastic bottles into high-flying rockets. Students will have a chance
to discover scientific principles such as Newton’s Laws, acceleration,
and thrust. A rocket can be defined simply as “a chamber enclosing gas
under pressure.” A small opening allows the air to escape, causing thrust.
Students will have the opportunity to design, construct and launch a
water-powered rocket of their very own!

What Does it Take to Win the Gold?
Do you get excited about the Olympics? Have you ever wondered how
one can achieve such greatness? How does a skier move down a snowcovered ramp at speeds of over 60 miles an hour and launch over two
football fields? Why do you glide so easily on ice and why does the rock
in curling move such great distances without a force?
Hands-on activities will allow students to better understand the science
behind the Olympic events and the technological advancements made
over the years to improve the performance and safety of athletes. After
learning what it takes reach the top, students will engage in their own
mini Olympic competitions.

What if you could see the world around you from a different perspective?
Would you be able to identify common objects? Would dirt and sand
pebbles look like giant mountains inhabited by dinosaur-like bugs,
spiders and ants?
Join us on this adventure to “see” what happens when we “Zoom”
in to observe things. Students will go on indoor and outdoor scavenger
hunts looking for overlooked shapes, colors and textures. Observations
will be aided by hand lenses, viewing tubes, dissecting microscopes and
more. Some of these discoveries will be recorded using digital cameras,
iPads, and microscope cameras. Students will also be using some virtual
tools on the computer and engaging in “Guess That Object” challenges.

Become an innovator and an inventor! The engineering design process
involves a series of steps that lead to the development of a new product
or system. You will be provided a challenge to create a new product to
solve a need you have identified. Your design will come to life using
computer software to create images of the design.

Energy Audit/ Wind Turbine
The need to conserve energy and to use alternative energy sources
has never been greater. You will learn the basics of energy usage
and consumption by conducting energy audits and using computers
to analyze the data. You also will explore how wind energy can be
used to meet the need for electricity. Will your team design the best
wind turbine and produce the most energy?

Engineering Design
Did you ever wonder why the bridges you drive over all look so different?
Does the appearance of the bridge relate to how it functions? Come find
out as we build our own bridges and run them through a structural failure
test to determine your bridge’s carrying capacity.

Forensics
From catching careless criminals and identifying people, the whirls,

Solid Fuel Rocket Propulsion Systems
Dream big and go far. Rockets have allowed civilization to explore
other planets, comets, meteors and even beyond the reaches of our
solar system. Students will be introduced to the TARC rocketry competition for next year and have the ability to compete from their home
schools. Students will learn the basic principles of rocket flight by
designing, building and launching their own rockets! These rockets
are run on solid fuel so if you blink you’ll miss their launch.

You are part of a team of engineers given the challenge of building
the tallest tower with the lowest overall weight that can withstand
15 kilograms. You will be required to design and draft working models

entering grades 1-8 (unless otherwise noted). On these
pages you will find a variety of classes to interest and
engage your child.
Programs for elementary, middle and high school students
are scheduled so your child can attend in the morning,
afternoon or both.
Summer Academy classes are held in the college's Viking
Child Care Center (basement level), Williams Hall, and
Higbee Hall. All students should report to the Summer
Academy office in Day Care Center, Room B06 on the first
day to check in and for room assignments. If there is any
change to this you will be notified before camp begins as
some situations require a different drop off. Courses are
taught by local elementary, middle and high school teachers
in addition to Hudson Valley Community College faculty.

Williams Hall and the Viking Child Care Center. We appreciate your

Chinese brush painting. Basic conversational skills will include:

Refunds
A 100 percent refund will be given if a written request is received
by the Office of Community and Professional Education prior to
the start of the camp for which your child is enrolled. After the
first class meeting, a 25 percent refund will be given once a written
request is received.
Computer Accounts
Attention, parents! When we register your child for Kids on Campus
programs a student record is created for them at Hudson Valley
Community College. If a new student, after registration your child will
receive two envelopes from the college. One will contain a username
and the second a password. This username and password will allow a
student to access the Hudson Valley Community College email and Flexible Registration system for online registration. If your child is returning
and you no longer have their username and password please call our
office. We can reset the password and send both in the mail. Please
keep these in a safe place. Students who enroll in a computer class this
summer at camp will need these to log in to the computer each day. If
you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available for those who qualify.
Scholarships are based on financial need. Funds are made possible by
the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation.
Immunization Records
Immunizations are required for participation in Kids on Campus
programs. Records for children who have previously participated
may be on file. If immunizations are needed you will be notified
with your confirmation.
Program Age Guidelines
For your child’s safety and optimal learning experience, please
honor the age requirements listed for each program.
Medication Policy
Children may receive medication during camp if the following
procedures are followed:
• A licensed health care provider must order all medications,
in writing (ex: physician, dentist). The written order will
include child’s name, dosage and time to be administered,
termination date, and the side effects.
• All medications must be in a pharmacy labeled bottle or
original manufacturer’s container.
• No medication is to be transported to or from camp by
the student. A parent/guardian or their adult designee
must bring medication to the nurse, trainer or camp staff.
• The parent or guardian must provide consent in writing for
the camp to carry out the physician’s order.
Special Accommodations
Hudson Valley Community College is committed to providing an
accessible education and supportive learning environment for all
students. To help us meet this goal, all students with disabilities who
require special accommodations must notify the Office of Community
and Professional Education in writing, two weeks before their first
camp begins, so that accommodations can be arranged. All information
