Gmail Configuration Instructions Sending from a Tufts account within Gmail Note: This guide does not cover instructions for receiving your Tufts email using the Gmail client. Gmail does not currently support the ability to import mail from an IMAP protocol. To read your Tufts email through Gmail, you must first forward your mail from Tufts to Gmail using the Tufts Tools website. For detailed instructions regarding mail forwarding, you can visit the KB article found here. Configuring your Account 1. Log in to your Gmail account. 2. Click on the Widget icon in the upper right corner of the browser. a. Select Mail Settings from the drop down menu. 1 3. In the Settings window, click Accounts and Import on the menu bar. 4. In the Send mail as: section, click the button labeled Send mail from another address. 2 5. A new window will pop up as seen in the screenshot above. a. Fill in the fields as appropriate and click Next Step » to continue. b. Optionally, you can click the different “reply-to” link to reveal another box if necessary. 6. To send mail from Gmail as if the mail is being sent from Tufts, you must configure your account using the Send through tufts.edu SMTP servers option. a. Enter exchange.tufts.edu in the box labeled SMTP server: b. Type in your Tufts UTLN in the box labeled Username: c. Enter your Tufts Password in the box labeled Password: d. Change the port number to 587 using the drop down list e. Insure that Secured connection using SSL is active. 3 7. Click Add Acount » to continue. 8. A confirmation email will be sent to the account which was set up using this process. a. Click the link in the email to validate the address b. Alternatively, enter the confirmation code provided in the email in the box provided and click Verify. 9. Once your Tufts email address has been validated, you will have the ability to send messages from your Tufts account using the Tufts SMTP server within Gmail. Tip: If you are also receiving Tufts email at your Gmail account you may want to consider one other option. a. In the Settings window in Gmail, click on the Accounts and Import tab to bring up its summary screen. b. Locate the Send mail as: section and consider changing the default reply to Reply from the same address the message was sent to. This setting may help avoid inadvertent replies from your Gmail account which may lead to confusion on the recipient’s part. 4 Composing a Message Now that your account is properly configured, you’ll have the option of sending mail from your Tufts account. 1. Click Compose Message. 2. Click the drop down arrow on the right side of the From: field to select the appropriate email account. 3. Your email will be delivered using the selected email account. Maintenance Note: It will be important to remember that your Tufts password needs to be changed every 180 days. When it becomes time to change your Tufts password you will need to remember to also update the password for your Gmail account sending permissions. This requirement is because the SMTP server requires that each user authenticate when sending mail from off campus in order to prevent malicious intent to use the SMTP server as spam. 1. To update your password, navigate to your Gmail Settings. Click Accounts and Import. 2. Locate the Send mail from area and find your Tufts account. 3. Click edit info. 4. Continue through the wizard updating only the password for your Tufts account. a. Enter your newly updated Tufts password. b. You should not have to update this password again for 180 days or until you make a manual password change to your Tufts account. 5
