National Volunteer Week “A volunteer action is like a stone thrown in a lake: its effect has a direct impact. At the same time, like ripples, volunteer efforts reach out far and wide to improve communities. Undeniably, volunteers rock.” The Canadian National Volunteer Week – April 12th to 18th – is a time to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers nationwide. Volunteers are the selfless individuals who demonstrate their genuine compassion for the well-being of others by taking action and making a difference. A Community School has unique programming designed to meet the specific educational, recreational and social needs of the neighbourhood it serves. At 2nd Street, we are fortunate to have involvement of our families and community partnerships to support this vision. This year’s campaign theme is: Volunteers are part of the ripple effect. Areas that you could become more involved at 2 nd Street include: Attending monthly Community Council Meetings Volunteering at Council sponsored fund-raising events Reading with children Coaching and/or driving students to district sporting events On behalf of the students and staff at 2nd Street, a heartfelt “Thank you” for all of your efforts to help make our school a better place. If you would like to volunteer at school, please do not hesitate to ask…no effort is too small! SUCCESSFUL 2ND STREET SHREDDING EVENT Thank you to the families in our school community as well as many other school communities that came out to support 2nd Street’s Shredding Event. It was a very successful event and we plan on scheduling another one for next year. Monies raised went towards upgrading our Earthquake Preparedness equipment for the school. So save any papers that need to be disposed of confidentially and 1800-shredding will be on back on site. TELEPHONES, ELECTRONICS, TOYS, AND SPORTS EQUIPMENT AT SCHOOL Students are requested NOT to bring electronic equipment to school. There is a risk of either losing or having it damaged. Many students have electronic games, as well as iPods, MP3 players, and telephones. We request that these items remain at home. At times students need their phone to contact parents at the end of the day. School Staff ask that students store them away during the school day and get permission with a phone pass to use the telephone available in the office. Please make sure that students know that if they bring toys or sports equipment to school, they are at risk of losing or damaging these items. The school is not responsible for lost or damaged items. We thank you for your assistance and cooperation with these issues. PARENTS/GUARDIANS PICKING UP STUDENTS DURING CLASS TIME Parents/guardians are reminded that if you need to pick your children up early during class time, you must pick them up and “sign them out” from the office. Please remember to send a note (in the planner) with your child to the teacher in the morning informing the teacher of early dismissal. This will assist in planning in order to minimize classroom disruption. Please do not ask children to wait outside for you as they are not supervised as this is a safety issue. SPECIAL LUNCH DAYS A reminder that our next Pizza Day is Thursday, April 16th. SPIRIT DAY Our next spirit day is on Friday, April 24th – it’s WACKY HAIR day!
