At Second Street Community School, we are committed to be a respectful,
joyful, and safe learning environment where we all strive to be our best.
Class Placement September 2015
At this time of year parents begin thinking about their child’s class placement for next year. Please know
that our staff members work together to thoughtfully place students in classes based on the number of
teachers assigned to our school.
When determining your child’s placement, a variety of factors are considered. For example: the number of
students in each class, a balance of boys and girls, academic and social strengths and needs, learning
styles, friendships and special interests. We use our professional judgment, existing data, and discussion as
we create classes, keeping in mind the considerations listed above. It is the responsibility of the school staff
to arrange classes so that each student has a positive learning environment.
We are happy to consider written requests for class placement that describe the academic, social and/or
physical needs of your child. Please do not request a specific teacher. These requests must be submitted
by Friday May 29, 2015. Please note that these letters are shared with the teaching staff when classes are
created. As always, classes will be finalized in September. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact me by email to [email protected] or by phone at 604.664.8819.

Bringing Outdoor Adventure
to the Edmonds Area!
There is a growing body of
research that shows that
spending time in nature can
have outrageously positive
impacts on children. The
positive outcomes associated
with spending time in nature
include:
 Increased feelings of
happiness and
decreased feelings of
stress
 Improved attention
span
 Lower levels of
behavioral conduct
disorder
 Less anxiety and
depression
 Higher sense of selfworth
 Improved academic
performance
At the City of Burnaby we
believe children should have
the opportunity to learn and
play outside which is why we
are introducing a brand new
service in the Edmonds area.
We are pleased to announce
the launch of Byrne Creek
Outdoor Camp at Ron
McLean Park (7820 Hedley
Ave)
Campers between the ages of 6-12 years old will learn a variety of outdoor skills and experience the excitement of
archery, canoeing, outdoor cooking, shelter building and natural crafts! Just like traditional outdoor camps, this
program will run rain or shine and give children the chance to appreciate the outdoors in all conditions! For more
