CADDIE GUIDE
On behalf of the Friends of Sedgley Woods,
It is our great pleasure to welcome you all to
the 2015 Philly Open!
The support from our 2015 sponsors and volunteers has been
tremendous. Thanks to those businesses and individuals, and
the hard work they’ve done, we were able to put together this
exciting event today. If you attended last years Philly Open, you
probably have high expectations about this years tournament
and we are pleased to say that you will not be let down. If you
haven’t been here in a while, you are in for a real treat!
Rybrew is hosting our lunch orders
again this year. You can fill out an order form near the registration table
and pick it up after your first round.
We have some exciting side games today. There is an optional $3 Cash Ace
Pot, the 3 for $3 bounty and a mini
basket CTP. If no one hits the ace pot,
all eligible players will throw off for
the cash! Creep Records, one of our
newest and most supportive sponsors, have offered a special
prize from their shop for any Aces! They’ll also be giving away
some t-shirts, as well.
Continued...
The 3 for $3 bounty is a new addition and is open to all players. For an optional $3 you have a chance at a $100 bounty. All
you have to do is get a birdie 3 on ALL 3 Par 4 bounty holes
today in one round. (Holes #11, #13 & #16) Easy enough right?
Once the last card is in, all Players, sponsors and volunteers will be treated to a
special ‘Sedgley style’ appreciation party!
The highlight of the day for many. We
have whole roasted pigs planned for both
days, and refreshments will be provided
by Philadelphia’s Yards Brewery.
During the party you may want to try your hand at our mini
basket CTP. You can never have too many mini baskets, so give
it a shot. Also don’t forget to grab your raffle tickets. We are pulling the final names for the PO15 Fund raiser Mega Raffle. We
have some great prizes left including some really good beverages, a pair of autographed Japan Open discs, and a Dynamic
Disc Ranger bag, to name a few.
A lot of work has been done around the course, and in the
office, in preparation for this day. We really hope you enjoy
yourselves with us this weekend at Sedgley Woods.
Good Luck Out There,
Aaron Fahey
Josh Hughes

The 2015 Philly Open layout starts with the first of the “outback holes”. This
cobblestone driveway was at one time an entranceway to the historic Cliff
House located in the meadow. There’s an O.B. fence that runs along the left
side of the fairway and golf balls come over from time to time. The pin is
centered on top of the hill with two clear lines to choose from. If you are able
to make on top, you’ll have a putt.

“The Blender” Accuracy is everything here. If you make it out of the
wooded hallway clean, you could be looking at a birdie. If not, you’ll
be scrambling to just save par. The pin is located at the mouth of the
meadow which is usually pretty windy. There is O.B. long so be careful
with your upshots. When you finish the hole, walk off the green to the
left to the first field hole.

The Meadow holes are a real treat, especially to Sedgley regulars, as
this area is usually off limits. You will have to decide how aggressive
you want to be. Its easy to get to the O.B. line in the air so you might
want to take a little off your drive, but if you shorten up too much
your approach shot to the peninsula green will be much more challenging. Par is not a bad score here.
O.B. - The tall grass along the right side of the fairway and around the

This downhill shot can be trickier than you would think. Hitting the
first gap is crucial. If you leave your drive short you could be looking at
a downhill approach that’s tough to keep close because of the sloped
green. A large tree came down behind the basket that made going
long a bit more forgiving, but you still don’t want to be back there.

Another scenic Sedgley hole with the Cliff House ruins in the back
ground. This hole definitely plays a lot longer than 263 feet with the
steep uphill drive. Guardian trees 80 feet short can keep you off the
putting green if your aim isn’t on. Split the trees and you’re on the
dance floor.

Pond - O.B.
Original hole 23 has seen a lot of change over the past few years.
Recently the pin was moved down the hill 80 feet , just 20 feet from
the pond. The approach shot is tricky. You have to keep the disc
up to avoid the low trees, but make sure it gets down fast to avoid
getting wet. Water hazard at Sedgley?

An accurate uphill shot is the only play here. The narrow fairway
opens as the hill flattens, but the pin is perched even higher than that.
The entire right side is protected by O.B., But in most cases it comes
into play around the green. This is one of the windiest places on the
course. Interstate 76 and the Schuylkill River are within view. When
you finish up here, it’s up the hill toward “The Cliff House” for your next
hole.

For your second meadow hole, Pros and MA1 tees off next to the
Cliff house. Ams will play a shortened tee. Two big drives will get you
there but be careful of the tree line along the right side as this can
be a difficult recovery. Carefully make your way down the Log steps
to your next tees.

Ams will stop at the yellow tee while Pros will continue down the
stairs to the red tee. Ams have to play a sweeping hyzer shot around
the corner. The Pro tee forces a high shot that must penetrate a narrow gap before crashing left. There is OB along the right side, parallel
with the train tracks. An unlucky kick could land you down the hill so
hit that line as clean as you can. Everyone heads up the steps to the
next tee.

Another tight squeeze. Getting off the tee is everything here. If you
can make it out and down the hill , par should be pretty easy, but if
you don’t be prepared to pull a rabbit out of your hat to get up and
down. It could be a matter of inches between a drop in birdie or a
tough scramble.. Keep it straight, Keep it low! Ams will head to the
blue tee while Pros and MA1 follow the trail to the red tee.

Ams play from the Blue tee where it is a fast straight tunnel shot
over the rocks, under the canopy and avoiding a number of early
guardians. Pros and MA1 will be playing the red tee where you will
need a well placed shot to even have a look at the green. Get around
the corner and stay clean, and a 3 is possible… but no guarantee.

Nothing fancy here. We extended original hole 11 by just over 50
feet. You will need a pretty straight shot that finishes slightly left here.
There is danger all the way down the fairway capped off by 2 final
guardians 40 feet from the pin. These two can make your drive or
approach come up a little shorter than you might be hoping for. Hit
the middle and it’s smooth sailing.

This is one of Sedgley’s favorite safari holes. Ams tee from the Blue
while the Pros and MA1 play from the Red. This is where placement
is critical. If you execute from the tee, you’ll be faced with a tough
shot across the gully to Sedgley’s #13 Pin. This hole has more danger
than we can write about. Par is a great score here. When you’re
group finally finishes up, everyone will head down Sedgley’s #14
fairway to the next tee.

Driving from the depths of the gully poses a challenge for even
the most skilled players. Sedgley’s Memorial Garden, short and left
of the pin, doubles as an O.B. Your shot will need early height and
accuracy to stay safe. Finishing left or an unlucky kick can turn into
an insta-bogie. A birdie 2 here impressive.

Classic Sedgley Blue 18 with an Island green. Generously large
enough to land on with ease but an error will cost you a stroke and a
walk to the drop zone where you will need a throw-in to save par.
Alternately you can lay up twice for an easy safe 3. You’ve got the
entire gallery watching you on this hole so aim to impress.

We added some danger to this classic Philly Open Safari hole last year
and players enjoyed the extra challenge. Pros and MA1 will tee from
yellow #1. You MUST go to the right of the Mando tree otherwise
Blue# 1 is your drop-zone. Ams will be teeing from the Blue tee. If an
Am misses the mando they must re-tee with a stroke until the mando
is made. On the right side, OB runs along the fence creeping in with
the wood line and circling back behind the pin. When your group
wraps up here, head up the steps and to the left to the next hole.

From this tee you’ll get a close view of our neighbors, the Smith
House Mansion. It has been entirely converted into an amazing
place for children both inside and out! If you have little ones in
your life, this is a must visit. There’s even a forty foot wooden sliding-board! As for the hole, it’s pretty straightforward. Stay low and
stay in the middle and you’re on the green. This is one of the easiest
holes on the course today so slow down and get your 2.

Hole 5’s longest tee is the deepest point of the front 9 and forces yet

This basket is blind from the tee. It’s placed just 10 feet behind the big
dead tree on the left. You can go straight up the middle or pump it
out to the right a bit. There’s OB on the right side so keep that in mind.
This is one of the 3 gallery greens so make that putt! Then head out of
the brown gate and follow the walking path left to the reservoir hole.

This is an intimidating temporary hole that was introduced at the
2013 Philly Open. You are playing back up Reservoir Drive towards the
parking lot. Straight and accurate is what you are aiming for here. An
errant shot could make it into the road or over the fence to the left.
Either way you are giving up a stroke, so execute. Be aware of pedestrians. You’re across the road, but you will finish in clear view of the
gallery. Give them something to see.
M. - Left of Marked Trees O.B. - Road Right & Fence Left
If your disc goes over the fence you may NOT attempt to retrieve it during the round.
