Hidden History in Our Backyard Arvest. 4225 SE Adams Road Mondays, 10 – Noon May 11th, May 18, June 1st Instructors: Michelle M. Martin & Kay Little Just north of us in Kansas lies the real Little House on the Prairie where Laura Ingalls Wilder lived as a child. Kay Little and Michelle M. Martin take you on a historical adventure right in our backyard. Along with Laura, you’ll meet Ma & Pa Ingalls, the Osage, and Doc Tann. Learn about their lives and the various connections between Kansas, Civil War soldiers, American Indians, and early African-Americans. We’ll top off the course with a field trip to the Little House on the Prairie Museum for a private, behind-the-scenes look at the Ingalls home site. The tour will take place on June 1st from 10 am –Noon. (Please note the museum is a 45 minute drive from Bartlesville, carpooling options will be available to students.) Michelle M. Martin is a history professor, living history interpreter, author and photographer, Martin founded her own historical consulting company--Discovering History--and serves as a historical consultant for the television, film and print industries. Her work has been aired on the History Channel, PBS and the National Geographic Channel. She is a living history interpreter and has volunteered her time at Fort Scott National Historic Site, Fort Larned National Historic Site, Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site. Her photographs have been featured in magazines and newspapers in the Central Plains. Martin served as the historian and director of the Little House on the Prairie Museum, the original Kansas home site of the Charles Ingalls family from 18691871. Martin's passion is preserving the rich tapestry of the American historical narrative and sharing it with the public. Kay Little has been an educator for more than 35 years, teaching 4th grade, preschool, homeschooling 2 sons, and serving as education coordinator at Bartlesville Area History Museum. While teaching her sons, Kay became very interested in history and started teaching local, state and U.S. history to groups of homeschoolers. Kay is from McAlester and graduated from East Central University. After "retiring", she started her own business, Little History Adventures, to share with people of all ages about local, state and U.S. history. Kay has served on boards for the local homeschool group, Wesleyan Christian School and Bartlesville Allied Arts and Humanities Council. Footprints in the Dew: The Mullendore Mystery Arvest, 4225 SE Adams Road & Bartlesville Public Library (May 20) Mondays, 1 – 3 pm (May 11, 18), Wednesday (May 20) May 11th, May 18, May 20 Instructor: Dale Lewis The most famous unsolved case in Osage County is the murder of E.C. Mullendore III, heir to the 300,000-acre Cross Bell Ranch. Mullendore was murdered in his home Sept. 26, 1970. The only other person with him was ranch employee Damon ‘Chub’ Anderson, who was also shot, though there was speculation that Chub was the murderer. Author Dale Lewis and Anderson were friends until Anderson’s death in 2010. Using photos and taped interviews, Dale will share his insight, stories and theories as you learn about the history of the ranch, the mistakes made during the investigation, and various theories about the crime. Dale Lewis, also known as “The Original Buffalo Dale,” is the author of Footprints in the Dew: The Life and Times of Chub Anderson, due to be published in fall 2015. Bruce Goff: Exploring a Creative Mind Price Tower Arts Center, 510 Dewey Ave Tuesdays, 10 – Noon May 12, 19 & June 2nd Instructor: Deshane Atkins He was a child prodigy with a talent for drawing. Apprenticed at age 12 to a Tulsa architectural firm, his employers were so impressed with his abilities they soon had him designing houses. Bruce Goff’s designs are described as flamboyant, exuberant, and inventive. During his prolific career, Goff designed 500 projects of which about a quarter were built. It’s our great fortune that many of these architectural treasures are in Oklahoma. His niece, and the film’s producer, Sandra Denney, will present the performance for OLLI. Cast and crew from the movie will be at the presentation. May 21: Homerun—Baseball all-star Cory Brand knows what it takes to win in the big leagues. But off the field, with memories of his past haunting him, his life is spiraling out of control. Micah Barnard, of Hero Productions, will show the film and discuss the process of taking an idea all the way to the big screen. May 28—Every Hidden Thing—What would you do if you knew the next fifteen minutes didn't count? A dangerous journey of sordid selfexploration – seemingly without consequences.
