1. Power+ Product Presentation:
The Power+ is the most sophisticated modular UPS in the North American market today. The Power+ is a
parallel redundant, scalable, power protection system, designed to protect your data and equipment and
minimize downtime and other adverse effects normally incurred by power irregularities and failures.
The Power+ continually eliminates surges, spikes and sags that are inherent in commercial utility power.
Over time, these irregularities shorten the life of equipment and components. The efficiency of POWER+
thus helps to extend the life of your equipment, even through normal use when the input power system is
constant and continuous.
The Power+ is flexible in structure, allowing it to be easily extended by adding modules as required. The
UPS modules are designed for hot swapping, making many different configurations possible.
The Power+ was released to the market in 2003. Over 10,000 units were installed in more than 80
countries in five continents.
Power+ has many unique features:

2. Power+ benefits over Symmetra PX:
2.1. Structure, weights and Assemblies:
The Power+ structure provides a superior complete solution over the APC Symmetra in the
following terms:
2.1.1 Lighter Weight:
♦
The Power+ classic would provide the exact same maximum power output (in KW) and the same
features as the Symmetra PX but its weight would be 45% lighter than the Symmetra PX’s weight.
♦
The Power+ RM would provide the same maximum power output and have additional features
(Internal MBPS) and still would be 40% lighter than the Symmetra PX.

2.1.2 Internal Maintenance Bypass (Power+ RM):
Housing configuration: The Power+ offers two different packages: an extra- light weight mechanical
modular package and a rack mount package.
The Power+ RM includes all the features of the parallel Symmetra PX with the addition of an internal
maintenance Bypass.
In order to have a maintenance bypass with the APC Symmetra PX, customers would need to purchase an
additional Rack that includes a Maintenance Bypass and a PDU. This would double the footprint of the
solution.

2.2. Efficiency & Power Factor:
Power+
Power per Module: 10kVA/8kW
Maximum Output Power: 80kW
Efficiency in double conversion mode: 94%
Symmetra PX
Power per Module: 10kVA/10kW
Maximum Output Power: 80kW
Efficiency in double conversion mode: 92%
2.2.1 Efficiency:
Power+ has a proven 94% efficiency rate while the Symmetra PX has 92%.
Let’s do a comparison of Power+ against the Symmetra PX. We will use an inquiry for 60KW consumption
for example.
To provide 60KW, the Power+ uses 63.829kW input from the AC power mains (80kW/94%=85.10kW).
In order to support the same load, APC Symmetra requires 80kW/92%=86.96kW
This means that for every hour of operation, the APC Symmetra PX will consume approximately 1.86kW
more than the Power+ on every hour of operation.
Assuming that a kWH costs USD 0.1, the yearly operation of APC Symmetra 80kW will cost USD
1,629.36 more than the Power+ in a direct electricity consumption.
1.86x (365 days x 24 hours x USD 0.1 / hour x difference to POWER+) =USD 1,629.36
But, the relations between efficiency & savings don’t end here…
Higher Ac-Ac efficiency = lower power loss = lower heat loss
In that case, using the Power+ would save also on purchasing costs of cooling
infrastructures as well as on the electricity cost used for the cooling.
2.2.2 Power Factor:
APC is trying to indicate a Power factor 1 as the main advantage of the Symmetra PX Vs. The Power+ but,
is that really an advantage when we are talking about a UPS designed for IT solutions?
"Power" as an electric term may be defined as the work consumed by an electric circuit. Mathematically,
Power is the product of current and voltage, i.e Volts and Amperes.
Electrical circuits are made of many small components, such as resistors, capacitors and coils. Capacitors
and coils have special resistance characteristics. Some of the energy supplied to the circuit is stored in the
load and/or returned to the source.
Due to a non-linear load the apparent power can be greater than the real power.
Power Factor is defined as: P/ S while apparent power (S), measured in volt-amperes (VA); and reactive
power (Q), measured in reactive volt-amperes (VAr). The Power Factor is a dimensionless number between
0 and 1.
From the load point of view, most IT equipment will usually have 0.7 to 0.8 power factor.
Let's assume that the load is 75kW with P.F. = 0.8. It means that the UPS has to supply 75/0.8= 93.75kVA.
APC Symmetra 80kVA/80kW UPS will not be able to provide the load and will transfer to bypass,
while the Gamatronic 100kVA/80kW UPS will easily handle the load.
7
2.3. Topology:
The Power+ is a TRUE ON-LINE UPS. This means that the batteries are constantly connected to the
output rectifier and to the input inverter with a common DC link, without ay switches.
The Symmetra PX is an ON-LINE UPS. This means that the inverter always provides power to the load,
but there is a switch between the batteries and the DC link. This switch results lower efficiency in single
conversion mode (on power outage), less reliability while transferring from AC input source to batteries
and lower charging capabilities.

Batteries are constantly connected to the DC link resulting in high reliability with no switching.
High efficiency during power outage (single conversion).
Powerful charger: quick recharge, no limitation to increasing backup time.
No “detection and response” process during power outage. Transfer from AC input source to
battery is smooth and direct.
2.4. Parallel Operation:
Power+ features optional built-in system parallel connectivity, enabling parallel-redundant connection of
multiple systems up to 400KVA for data centers, industrial sites and large service operators that require the
highest levels of resilience and availability.

2.5. Backup time:
The Power+ Centralized battery topology allows the user to determine the type size of battery as well as the
number of sets of batteries to be used, according to the needed application and back up time.
The Power+ powerful charging capabilities provide a quick recharge, with the best capabilities in the
market to increase the backup time. (>3Hours @ 100% load).
The Power+ provides various hot swappable battery solutions, with different range of batteries: 7AH,
20AH, 26AH and 40AH. Larger external battery cabinets are available as well.

The Symmetra PX is limited to using small- jar standard 7.2AH batteries with
one battery module.
It uses one set of batteries per every power module. If you have Symmetra 80kW UPS for example, you’ll
be required to install and maintain 8 sets x 32 batteries and be limited to 3.5 Minutes back up time @ full
load.
In order to achieve a better runtime, Symmetra provides the XR premium batteries with 9AH which in
80kW, for example, will allow the UPS to run for 4 Minutes @ full load.
The maximum backup time the Symmetra can achieve with 3 extra XR pre mium battery modules
would be only 35 Minutes.

2.6. System Controller:
2.6.1. Control & Single Point of Failure:
The system controller of the POWER+ is not a single point of failure since full control logic is
included within each module, allowing the system to run indefinitely, even without the system
controller.
The same as the power modules, the controller can be hot swapped as well.
The system controller of the Symmetra PX is a single point of failure and in order to deal with this
disadvantage, APC offers 2 redundant system controllers per system (and the customer is paying for that...)
2.6.2. Controller Features:
The Power+ Controller has 4 dry contact inputs, 4 dry contact outputs, remote control option and
SNMP/Web interface as standard. (as well as battery current limit and temperature sensor).
Cellular communication is optional with the Wing- a simple cellular communication device. It is being
installed on UPS and DC systems, and provides SMS alarms to the end user or control centers. On Power+
UPS, for example, the unit’s network board will automatically detect and start using the newly attached
cellular modem for communication.

2.6.3. Hot Swapped Controller:
The same as the power modules, the controller can be hot swapped as well, and can be replaced with any of
the system’s power modules at any desired height.
This feature is useful for initially low units that are being upgraded to more power.
