Essentially, RSS is a quick and easy way for us to syndicate news of our articles and offer quick links back to the full text. Librarian Customer Support To grab our RSS feeds, first you’ll need to install a software program known as an RSS reader, or aggregator (click here to see a few choices, some of which can be downloaded for free), which can read these XMLcoded files and deliver news of our journal content to you. Users can select from two validation options for your institutions: IP validation and/or referring domain access. Many librarians choose to use both of these options simultaneously, although only one is required for institution-wide validation. Each option is summarized below, including what is necessary from the institution and the key considerations for each option. Getting Started with APPI Journals • DSM-IV-TR ® • and Psychiatric News for the latest clinical and research news IP Validation – IP validation is straightforward. Access is tied to the physical network location of the user. Institutions provide the IP ranges of their controlled network, and those IP ranges are associated with their PsychiatryOnline.com account. When users in those IP ranges come to any page on the site, they are automatically validated as a user from that institution. It is completely seamless to the user—they can access content immediately without logging in. Librarian Customer Support Reference books* (latest editions): • Psychosomatics Some institutions use proxy servers, which actually make the process even easier. All of their network activity is routed through one or more IP addresses. When those IP addresses are attached to the account, the entire institution gains access. For that reason, it is often combined with IP access to create comprehensive access for an institution’s on-site and remote users. Referring domain access requires the institution to put a link behind your own security. Many library systems have a secure area of their website that requires log in so that at-home users can access the library’s holdings remotely. You can view APPI’s institutional license agreement online here. What is the PsychiatryOnline policy on interlibrary loan? About APPI APPI Journal and Electronic Products Getting Started with APPI Journals Librarian Customer Support Not yet. But we are working to make this capability available. If you have chosen a specific vendor or product (if any) for your metasearch solution, we’d love to know the details. We’d like to make the PsychiatryOnline Journals available via PubMed LinkOut. Which provider do we select? Electronic citation data and links to full text are submitted to PubMed LinkOut by HighWire Press on behalf of the PsychiatryOnline Journals. Please select the links provided by HighWire Press. Does PsychiatryOnline support “deep linking” through stable and persistent URLs? Yes, PsychiatryOnline books and journals support deep linking. Articles and book sections are assigned absolute IDs that stick with that piece of content as long as it remains on the website. Thus, URLs constructed with our IDs will always point to the same content, as long as that content is still on the site. 19 ▼ Institutional subscribers may fulfill requests from other institutions, a practice commonly called interlibrary loan (ILL). To be in compliance with the Terms of Use, ILL requests must be filled in compliance with Section 108 of the United States Copyright Law (17 USC 108, “Limitations on exclusive rights: Reproduction by libraries and archives”) and clause 3 of the Guidelines for the Proviso of Subsection 108(g)(2) prepared by the National Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works. Are federated search or metasearch options available for PsychiatryOnline? PsychiatryOnline.com “Referring domain” institutional access users: Usage of the journals may be underreported for users accessing the subscription using the referring domain method. Usage of individual journal articles can be tracked only by IP address, so usage by users with nonregistered IPs will not be shown in usage reports. Training Users and Promoting Your Library Usage statistics for the PsychiatryOnline journals closely follow COUNTER standards. COUNTER standards are well developed for journals, but for books/reference works, the standard is still developing. However, we have already implemented the major guidelines for PsychiatryOnline books, and we will continue to monitor and implement the COUNTER standards as they evolve. To benefit from this support, institutional subscribers must install a LOCKSS cache at their institution. (See http://lockss.stanford.edu for further information.) Institutional subscribers may perpetually use the LOCKSS system to archive and restore PsychiatryOnline.com content, so long as the institutional subscriber’s use is otherwise consistent with the Terms of Use. APPI further acknowledges and agrees that, in using the LOCKSS system, PsychiatryOnline content may be made available to other LOCKSS system participants who indicate a right to the subscribed PsychiatryOnline content. Librarian Customer Support Do PsychiatryOnline usage statistics conform to COUNTER standards? PsychiatryOnline participates in the LOCKSS system for archiving digitized journal back issues and previous editions of books. Under this program, previous editions of books would be placed in LOCKSS for perpetual access once a new edition is placed online. Previous editions of books would only become available via LOCKSS after a new edition is released online. (Subscription rates for current editions of books are calculated based on 12 months of access, not life of the edition.) Quick Reference for APPI Journals and Electronic Products You’ll need to visit two locations to collect complete usage statistics. Our journals are hosted by HighWire Press, so you should use the HighWire interface (which we hope is familiar to you from other journal subscriptions) to access full journal statistics. Books stats are available here; there is a link from that location to your institution’s journals stats on the HighWire site. What is the PsychiatryOnline policy on perpetual access? ▼ Book usage reports are broken down by month, with the current month displayed by default. Stats recalculate nightly. You can select to review stats for previous months, or for year-to-date. Contents Is PsychiatryOnline OpenURL compliant? Yes, PsychiatryOnline journals are hosted by HighWire Press, which is completely compliant as a target. So OpenURL resolvers can link to the content hosted by HighWire. The "Manage OpenURL Configuration" page created by HighWire Press (host of PsychiatryOnline Journals) allows you to add and manage your OpenURL configurations in one location for all of your HighWire-hosted journal subscriptions. Follow the instructions found here: http://highwire.stanford.edu/cgi/openurladmin. PsychiatryOnline.com books support OpenURL reference link resolution. When browsing end-of-chapter references, patrons will see "Full Text" links when your library's holdings are referenced. To enable OpenURL reference link resolution for books, please send the Base URL for your link resolver to [email protected]. Can I link directly to the journals and books on PsychiatryOnline.com? Yes, direct links are provided here. But please keep in mind that linking directly to the home pages of the journals will bypass the PsychiatryOnline interface and deny your users some of the rich interlinkages available as part of your subscription. How should I cite the online versions of PsychiatryOnline books and journals? About APPI What are DOIs? The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is an identification system for intellectual property in the digital environment. Developed by the International DOI Foundation on behalf of the publishing industry, its goals are to provide a framework for managing intellectual content, link customers with publishers, facilitate electronic commerce, and enable automated copyright management. The DOI name itself remains persistent through ownership changes and unaltered once assigned. Visit www.doi.org for more information. Example: Hollander E, Simeon D: Anxiety disorders, in The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry, 4th Edition. Edited by Hales RE, Yudofsky SC. Washington, DC, American Psychiatric Publishing, 2003. doi:10.1176/appi.books.9781585622689.76489 Available here. Accessed March 20, 2007. Cite online journal articles similarly to how you’d cite their print versions, including volume number, page numbers, and year (if they are included). Also include the DOI and web address (URL) on which you found the article and the date you last accessed it. Example: Stroup TS, Lieberman JA, McEvoy JP, et al: Effectiveness of olanzapine, quetiapine, and risperidone in patients with chronic schizophrenia after discontinuing perphenazine: a CATIE study. Am J Psychiatry 164:415–427, 2007. doi:10.1176/appi.ajp.164.3.415. Available here. Accessed March 20, 2007. Does PsychiatryOnline offer MARC records?
