1. Create a new VLAN
This is needed as so-called Mesh Private VLAN for control traffic between the remote mesh
portal and the mesh points.
• Configuration | Network | VLANs | Add a VLAN (901 in this example). There is no need
to select a port.
• Click Apply.

2. Assign an IP address to the VLAN
• Configuration | Network | IP | IP Interfaces
click on Edit next to the VLAN created in
step 1.
• We use a fixed IP address 192.90.1.1 and 255.255.255.0 as network mask.
• Click Apply.
3. Create a DHCP pool and enable the DHCP server

7. Create a dummy Virtual AP Profile for the mesh
• Configuration | Advanced Services | All Profiles | Wireless LAN | Virtual AP Profile
in
the blank field on the right hand side, type a name for a new Virtual AP Profile and click
Add. (We call it VAP_testMESH.)

8. Configure your wireless network (“real”) Virtual AP for the mesh
• Configuration | Wireless | AP Configuration | AP Group
click Edit for your wireless
network AP group (not the mesh group).
• Open Mesh in the tree structure and select Mesh Radio Profile. Change the Mesh Radio
Profile to the one created in step 4.
• Click Apply.
• Select Mesh Cluster Profile in the tree structure and add the Mesh Cluster Profile created
in step 5. The priority should be set to 1.
• Click Add.
• Click Apply.

9. Create an AP group configuration for the Remote Mesh Portal
• Configuration | Wireless | AP Configuration | AP Group (AP Specific would work as well
but is slightly different.)
• Click New | type in a name for the AP group and click Add. (We use “AP group testNET
(Remote Mesh Portal)” in this example.)
• Click Edit next to the new AP group.
• Wireless LAN | Virtual AP
select the Virtual AP Profile for your wireless network SSID
(not the mesh) and click Add.
• Now select the Virtual AP for the mesh and click Add.
• Click Apply.
• Open Mesh in the tree structure and select Mesh Radio Profile. Change the Mesh Radio
Profile to the one created in step 4.
• Click Apply.

• Select Mesh Cluster Profile in the tree structure and add the Mesh Cluster Profile created
in step 5. The priority should be set to 1.
• Click Add.
• Click Apply.
10. Configure the Remote Mesh Portal
• We assume that the AP is a Remote AP already. For information on how to set up Remote
APs, please see the Aruba documentation.
• Configuration | Wireless | AP Installation

• Change the AP group to the group we configured in step 9. This is the one with two VAPs.
• Set the Mesh Role to Remote Mesh Portal.
• Click Apply and Reboot.
11. Configure the Remote Mesh Points
• Configuration | Wireless | AP Installation

• Change the AP group to the group that contains your wireless network SSID configuration
(not the mesh group)
• The IP Settings must be set to “Obtain IP Address Using DHCP”.
• Set the Mesh Role to Remote Mesh Point.
• Click Apply and Reboot.
• Be patient. It can take a few minutes until the Mesh Point establishes the connection to the
Remote Mesh.
