How to Plan a Summer Vacation
I have read the Biblical story of the Exodus more times than I can remember, but recently I did it as we were planning
our summer vacation. Reading about the Israelites’ journey in the desert led me to gain a deeper understanding of this
ancient story while at the same time a much greater fear of my own upcoming family trip.
After years of slavery in Egypt, the people of Israel were finally liberated. Freedom, however, was not an end in itself.
It was only a step towards the ultimate climax - settlement in the Promised Land while establishing a nation and
conducting life according to a new, Divinely inspired code of ethics and laws. Only that, as often happens, things didn't
work out as intended. The journey from Egypt to Israel, that normally would have lasted a few weeks, went on for 40 years.
The reasons for the delay are important, but here I would like to focus on the outcome: an endless stream of whining, bickering and
complaints. The longer the Israelites stayed in the desert, the shorter their memory became. The memories of the hardship and oppression
that engulfed their lives as slaves slowly dissipated and were replaced by nostalgia and longing for the good life they had in Egypt. When
something didn't turn out the way they expected, a barrage of harsh words was immediately launched at poor Moses. At difficult moments,
no one considered Moses' unparalleled sacrifice and total devotion to his people. Rather, he was personally held responsible for everything
that went wrong, from the quality and quantity of the food, to the weather.
When we return from our family vacations we often remember them as spectacular, full of joyous activities and ample quality time with the
kids - and that’s the way it should be. But be honest, how many times during the trip have you felt like Moses, unappreciated and unjustly
treated? A family vacation is not easy nor an inexpensive endeavor. We accumulate precious vacation days, save money, plan a trip, deal
with the airlines and do the driving. Then, at the end of a long day, when we expect our kids to sing our praises and coronate us as "Parent of
the Year", we instead get the infamous line, "it’s the worst vacation ever”. And why? Because the restaurant didn't have the ice-cream flavor
that they wanted.
So what do we do wrong? We treat our children as if our sole purpose of existence is to appease them and make sure that their time with us is
always fun. We plan a vacation around their interests and what they consider as “cool” and at the end of every activity we nervously wait for
a nod of approval.
With that in mind, my family and I decided to change our vacation format this summer from "we (parents) do it for you (kids)" to "we all own
it together". To practice the new concept, we tried a pilot in the form of a 24-hour camping trip in Jonathan Dickinson State Park. If my old
friends read this column, they probably will think that I have completely lost my mind. I am not known as someone who enjoys spending the
night in a tent fighting gigantic mosquitoes, but I did it and it was worth every single bug bite! What made this outing different from all of
our other trips (rustic conditions aside) was that we planned our camping as a real family project. My almost 12 year old daughter and my
almost 7 year old son worked as hard as my wife and I did. Together we did the planning, shopping, packing and unpacking, pitching the tent
and taking it down, cooking, taking care of the baby and most importantly shared the responsibility for what went wrong. Instead of “Mom!
You forgot to . . .” it was - we forgot to pack some items, and therefore we had to improvise ways to deal with it. The experience was so
powerful that we changed our upcoming trip to North Carolina to add four days camping in the Great Smoky Mountains.
The reason we are sometimes being treated poorly by our children (as Moses was by his people) is that we convey the message that we do
things for their benefit because we owe it to them. We put our children in a position in which we do the work, and they are there to evaluate
our performance. If we do well, we may get a little “thank you”. But, if we don’t live up to their expectations, the bickering and the whining
begin.
Camping is not for everyone, but the model of working together and sharing responsibilities is a key for good parent-child relationships. It's
when we start working together as a family that a mutual appreciation takes place. Charles Darwin said that “In the long history of
humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.”
We all, parents and children, need and deserve a vacation. We can take it separately or together. If we choose the second model, the
togetherness has to be real and understood as shared ownership of all aspects of the holiday. I strongly believe that not only the trip will be
more pleasant for everyone, but it also will improve the family’s dynamics.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Bruce Cohen
Sometimes when I write, a word comes to mind that I would like to use, but before I put it on paper I
like to look it up to confirm I'm choosing the right word. So, today when the word complacent came to
mind, I was a little surprised to read the dictionary definition. After reading "a feeling of quiet pleasure
or security, often while unaware of some potential danger; or smug satisfaction with an existing
situation"I decided this was not the word I wanted to use. In my mind I think of complacency as a
feeling of “we are fine...we are doing okay”. Are we doing as well as we could be? Maybe, maybe not. Of course there
is always going to be room for improvement in whatever we do. But I think the problem with complacency is not that
we haven't achieved everything that we want to achieve, but that it can be a slippery slope to stagnation. Because if we
are not growing, advancing, progressing, then we are standing still. When times are tough or we encounter a problem,
our collective adrenaline kicks in and we band together to fix things. But once things are fixed, that's when we reach
that state of "doing okay".
So are we happy with where we are? Absolutely! When I think of all the great accomplishments I have seen at our
Temple over my 5 years here, I am amazed, and honored to be a part of something so momentous. Looking ahead,
though, I feel we all have a responsibility to help ensure that we don't become complacent (using my definition, not the
dictionary's). I've talked before about how important this Temple is, both here in our northern community, as well as in
the role that every Temple in this country plays towards keeping Judaism alive.
So as we head into the summer, admittedly the best time of year to be complacent - but also a good time to do some
thinking - if you have not had the opportunity to get involved here at the Temple, I would like to ask something of each
of you: think of one thing that you think you could help out with. There are so many ways to volunteer, I would say
there is literally something for everyone. What do you like to do? What are you good at? We all have skills of different
kinds, many of which could be applied here. And if you're one of those people who say "well I don't have any special
skills" I say two things to you.....first, you're wrong, and second, what we really need is your time. If you have even just
a couple of hours every now and then, that makes all the difference. And multiply that by each of our members - that's a
whole lot of volunteering - and that's what helps us be able to do all the great things we do. Who knows, you might just
like it so much you'll want to run for TBA President.
When you have such an active board, dynamic clergy, and supportive staff, it may look like things are running along
quite well without you. But what this also means is that there is a group of people at the center of all of this who are
involved regularly in all of these different activities. And though they do it because they enjoy it, they would also love
some extra helping hands.
Do you like planning events? Do you like working with kids? Are you handy with tools and building things? How
about helping make a difference with the Social Action Committee? And what about a chance to meet some great new
people at the same time - there are so many activities that we could use your help with. Just tell us what you'd like to do.
Not sure what you’d like to do? Call the Temple office and let them know you have a few hours to help out; they can
get you in touch with the people that can use your help.
As I mentioned above, we have a great Board of Directors, who put in countless hours behind the scenes keeping the
many moving parts of the Temple working. The terms of three of those Directors will be up at the end of June. I would
like to say thank you to Jody Minde, Matthew Lane and Harvey White, who have each given so much of themselves
to this Temple in so many ways. If you see them around, please reach out and thank them for their service and devotion
to TBA.
I hope you have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to seeing you at Shabbat Services.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Carol Safran
Whenever I talk to my colleagues at other Temples, they are always amazed by the number and variety
of programs and events TBA offers over the course of the year. For a congregation our size, our
calendar is really jam-packed and, unlike most other congregations, includes events and programs every
month of the year. That’s incredibly unusual, and just one of the things that make TBA such a unique
and vibrant community.
Let’s take a moment for a stroll down Memory Lane 2011-2012. Here are some highlights of the new and exciting things
the TBA community enjoyed…
June 2011 marked the inauguration of a brand new summer program for TBA youngsters: Wonders of Creation Camp
for children ages 6-8. The kids had a great time doing a huge variety of activities, ranging from art and drama to fun and
games with My Gym. Last year’s campers had such a blast that this year we renamed the program Camp Blast!
In July we kicked off Independence Day weekend at Carlin Park, as the sounds of the surf intermingled with our Friday
night prayers. After Services, we started the celebration with a Pizza Party and free treats from the ice cream truck. It was
fun and delish! Keeping food as our theme, Sisterhood and Men’s Club organized their first Mystery Progressive Dinner.
(If you’ve missed the progressive dinners so far this year, make sure you sign up for the one on June 16.)
In August, we celebrated our first-ever Sephardic Shabbat with beautiful Sephardic melodies during Worship Services and
delicious Sephardic delicacies and desserts before and after.
In September, we welcomed everyone back from summer vacation with a spread of artisanal cheeses and fabulous wines to
fill our stomachs before Shabbat Services. Later that month we filled our hearts – hosting Family Promise for the first
time.
In October, we hosted a distinguished panel of experts on the BRCA gene – the culprit in a hereditary form of breast and
ovarian cancer that is relatively prevalent among Jews. Members of the community at large joined the TBA community to
learn some life-saving information.
December marked our big, blow-out Chanukah Block Party, complete with a DJ, magician, face painters, and a tasty
Chanukah dinner (with lots of latkes, of course)!
Nationally acclaimed journalists and authors Cokie and Steve Roberts were guest speakers at TBA in January. While
describing their new book, Our Haggadah, Cokie and Steve reminisced about Passover seders with their interfaith family
and friends… including some very well-known politicians, diplomats and other luminaries. January 2012 was also the
month of the TBA Gourmet! A group of dedicated foodies prepared delicious treats and shared recipes, as well as
cooking tips and secrets. Our first of three monthly Camp Shabbat celebrations was in January, too. Dozens of young
families joined our guest artists, Rick Recht and Sheldon Low, to sing Shabbat songs around the “campfire.”
In February we hosted Sammy the Spider! (As well as his creator, acclaimed children’s author, Sylvia Rouss).
In March, a large contingent of TBA members joined Rabbi Alon at the AIPAC Conference in Washington DC.
April marked our first Parents’ Night Out – a chance for TBA members to get together for dinner and a movie while their
children have fun of their own at Temple.
In May, a group from the Tzahar region brought us scents and stories of Israel.
So there you are – a new, innovative program every single month, courtesy of our vibrant TBA community! (And that list
doesn’t include any of the wonderful programs throughout the year that have become Temple Beth Am traditions.) There
are even more wonderful events planned for the coming year, so keep your eyes on the Scribe and your calendar at hand!

CANTOR TANYA GREENBLATT
Do you avoid coming to Services or singing along when you do come? Have you ever thought that
if only you felt more comfortable or knowledgeable, you would be able to participate more fully
and enjoy Services more? Do you wish there was a class to learn the music we sing in Services?
Well, you’re in luck! There is, in fact, just such a class, and it meets nearly every week, all year
long. You might have heard of it, and thought it wasn’t for someone like you. That’s where you’re wrong. It’s time
for you to come to Temple Beth Am on a Wednesday night from 7:00pm – 8:30pm to check out… the Temple Beth
Am Adult Choir.
No, I’m not trying to fool you into joining an elite performance group, when you only sing in the shower or maybe
along with the radio when you’re alone in your car. While the choir does participate in leading Services sometimes
on Friday nights, and, of course, during the High Holy Days, you don’t need to be a great singer, or to have any
experience or background in music or Hebrew to come to rehearsals. Coming to choir rehearsals is the single best
way to become familiar with the melodies of our Services, to learn new music even before it’s introduced to the
congregation, and to learn about the meaning and spiritual intention of our prayers. Yes, we learn notes and words,
but we also explore the text and the additional meaning that the musical settings we sing add to that text.
There’s safety in numbers, so bring your friends and family; anyone over the age of bar or bat mitzvah is welcome.
When the time comes to sing in front of the congregation, you may choose to stand with the choir as a leader of the
Service, or to sing along from the pews. There’s nothing better than lots of people singing along all over the
sanctuary. I promise you’ll get more out of Services for the experience.
B’shirah (Yours in song),
Cantor Tanya

Life in the W3
Howard Freedland
For those of you that are new to this grouping of words, the W 3 is short for something. No, it is not the offshoot of the WB
network. It means Worship, Warmth and Welcome. Our Mini-mission statement is:
We are a community of worship, warmth and welcome.
Short, sweet and to the point, this phrase has more significance than meets the eye. Note: we are not a membership. We may
have been in the past, but not anymore. Membership is something that you PAY for. Costco is a membership. Temple Beth
Am is a community. I can speak for myself (and a few others that I have surveyed recently) and say that my family joined
because it was the only place that we felt comfortable walking through the doors of. When we arrived at TBA, we felt as if it
was an extension of our home. Our friends are here; our kids have great things to do here; we are spiritually fulfilled here.
We are preaching the W3 because that is our goal. The W3 is where we want to be. The W3 is where a congregation is
progressively and successfully looking after itself, while providing the right atmosphere for growth.
So, how does it work? The year is looked at as a three-part puzzle. While we know that there is overlap, each part of the W 3
is prominent at one of the three parts. The slice of the pie that we are in the midst of is warmth. Yes, I know it is hot…but
that is not what I mean. We are finishing our fiscal year after celebrating many wonderful accomplishments. For example, I
have been witness to some great B’nei Mitzvah Services recently. I have watched family friends, our Temple community,
earn their place in Jewish Adulthood with pride and excitement. There has been much to celebrate this season, and I am
encouraged by what I see in the future! This is what warmth is about: enjoying nachas with the ones that you care about.
The welcome phase begins in July with our Auxiliary-Run Temple Picnic at the Beach on July 8th from 11:00am-2:00pm at
the Anita Lankler Pavilion at Marcinski Road and A-1-A. We continue the welcome phase with our Temple Open House on
August 26th where families can spend time with Clergy, staff and the teachers of the Religious School, all while enjoying lots
of activities for kids of all ages! We will have a Community Shabbat, where we dedicate the Service to those who have
recently joined our TBA Family, and we will start a NEW program dedicated to orienting our new families into TBA culture
by entertaining them at a quarterly mixer where they can meet Temple members, leaders, clergy and staff while learning what
TBA has to offer them.
Worship is ongoing, but for our purposes here, begins in September and continues through January. Spirituality is unique for
all, but we all seem to enjoy gathering for the High Holy Days, along with Sukkot, Simchat Torah, the Thanksgiving Interfaith
Service and, our Chanukah celebration in December. There is also the B’nei Mitzvah slice of the pie, as I would encourage all
of us to join the 37 families that are looking forward to kvelling as their children become young adults in the Jewish faith.
Just attending some of these celebrations will surely remind you how wonderful it is to celebrate as a community.
So, in conclusion, there is a great deal to be happy about. There are wonderful programs to be a part of and a great culture that
is forever in the making. We need to work together to make the W 3 a reality. I want to see us get there. Please join me for
the ride in making our Temple the spiritually enriching, warm and welcome place that we want it to be. I look forward to
seeing you throughout the summer, and as always, if there are any questions, comments or concerns regarding anything
mentioned, please e-mail me at [email protected]. See you soon!

SISTERHOOD SCOOP
Lois Remick
“I
was a lousy hitter in May doing the same things that made me a great hitter in June. ”
Carl Yastrzemski quotes (Red Sox star player in the 60’s)
June and Baseball: specifically Red Sox Baseball at Fenway Park in Boston. Now that is a reason to love June! For that
matter July, August and September are also terrific as long as my Red Sox are winning!
So what does a winning team like the Red Sox have in common with the Sisterhood of Temple Beth Am?
For starters…..persistence in planning winning events; a loyal fan club (our husbands and families) and like Fenway Park,
we serve the best food at all our events!
So, even if you root for another team, here is Sisterhood’s Line-up for the coming season:
Home Plate (catch this one)
Selichot and Dinner: Saturday, September 8, 2012 (See Flyer on another page)
Rosh Hashanah bags of honey, apples and shofars for the children
Paid-up Membership Brunch: January 27, 2013
Sisterhood Shabbat: February 15, 2013
First Base (catch this)
Hibel Museum Visit INCLUDING HIGH TEA…..Sunday, October 28, 2:00pm to 4:00pm, cost $18 per person (men
folk invited to sign up also). See Flyer in Scribe and in lobby of TBA
Second Base (catch this one)
Tour of Morikami Museum with Lunch Included…….March, 2013
Stay Tuned for our Third Base Event and make it a Home Run!!!!!
As the Fiscal Year 2011-2012 will end soon, Sisterhood of Temple Beth Am wants to thank all members and those who
have shopped in the Judaica Store. Because of your attendance at Sisterhood events and “local buying of everything
Judaica”, we have been able to contribute to the following:
Temple Beth Am Phonathon
Camp Coleman Fund
Jewish Children and Family Services
El Sol
JAFCO (JEWISH ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE OPTIONS)
Family Promise
Girl Scout Cookies for our Troops Overseas
Tanakhs for our B’nei Mitzvahs (along with the Men’s Club)
Just a reminder that all Sisterhood members are invited to attend our monthly meetings that are held the first
Thursday of the month at 7:00pm in the TBA Social Hall.

MEN’S CLUB
Jerry Holinstat
A Happy Memorial Day to everyone! Our Temple has a representation of Men and Women that have Honorably served
their country with Pride and at times Valor. On behalf of myself and the Men’s Club of Temple Beth Am we would like to
say “Thank You for helping to keep us and our children safe”.
Well for the recent past we have done the following:
The Men’s Club of Temple Beth Am proudly presented David Sherman, our Religious School Director, a check for $1,000.
This money is to go to a special Scholarship fund to assist the children of our Temple with their Camp Coleman expenses
where their families could not otherwise afford to pay for them to attend. A big thank you from me as well as the Temple
Men’s Club for your unselfish giving. As most of you are aware the Men’s Club funds are donated by dues or small
donations. The Men’s Club does not receive money from the Temple but rather gives to the Temple excess funds that they
have raised each year.
Just recently we have had two very successful fishing trips with a good turnout. For those persons that have not had the
opportunity to join us in the past, please feel free to join us on the next trip. The regulars are myself (Jerry Holinstat)
Harvey Silverman, Rabbi Alon, Bruce Cohen, Gideon Kroyter, Mark Slifkin and others. The fee is $100; $80 for the
boat and a $20 gratuity for the boat’s mate. We usually all go to dinner after the trip. Please call or write Harvey Silverman
at [email protected] for upcoming trips.
The Yom Ha’Atzmaut Service and Beach Bar-B-Q were very well attended and G-D kept the weather from raining us out.
Chicken was the fare of the day and boy was it ever consumed. Thank you John Marzina, Bob Feller, Rich Remick,
Harvey Silverman, David & Mary Elias, Mike Greenfeld, and please forgive me if I overlooked anyone that deserves to
be mentioned as part of John Marzina’s team.
John Marzina and his team served hot dogs and cold drinks to all of our children and parents that appeared on the last day of
school. This was also at no charge.
Men’s Club is planning lots of events for the coming months. A “Turtle Walk” which for those of us that have never
participated in one, is an awesome event. We will all meet in the Loggerhead Museum for an informative talk by one of the
Turtle experts. Then we wait to see if one of the scouts spots a Loggerhead Turtle pulling it’s 300 to 500 pound body out of
the ocean to dig a deep hole and lay it’s eggs. It then buries it’s eggs and then pats the sand down so that other animals will
not dig them up.
The event will take place on Wednesday, July 25th at the Loggerhead Marine Life Center U.S. 1 in Juno Beach (100 yards
North of Donald Ross Road). We will meet at 9:00pm. The trip is limited to adults & children over 8 years old. The cost
is $17 per person and is limited to the first 20 congregants that sign up. Please send your check for $17 per person made out
to Temple Beth Am, attention Harvey Silverman, RE: Turtle Walk.
On Sunday, July 8th we are having our Temple wide Bar-B-Q at 11:00am to 2:00pm at Marcinski Road & A1A at the
Anita Lankler Pavilion. The menu will consist of hot dogs and hamburgers and a veggie option, too. These are all being
provided FREE by our Temple. Please come, bring your families, relatives and friends. John Marzina and his Kitchen
Team will be supplying the kitchen talent. I can only promise that a great time will be had by all.
Saturday night, June 16th we are conducting our third PROGRESSIVE DINNER. This fine dining event is, as usual, being
facilitated by Mary & David Elias. I cannot wait to meet at Temple on Saturday night and discover who’s house my wife
Sharon and I will be dining at and what the entree will be. What an opportunity to make new friends, visit with old friends
and experience a delightful night out. Please send your check for $25 per person to Mary or David Elias made out to

In August, the Men’s Club will be selling COUPON BOOKS to everyone at Temple Beth Am including our Preschool
families. This is the only fund raiser that the Men’s Club has. We are really asking for your support. This is the same
coupon book that most of us purchased last year, in fact many bought multiple copies to take advantage of the great value the
coupon book contains. The cost of the book is $20 and you will get at least $500 back in coupons that you use on a daily
basis. This includes places like: Publix, Sal’s Italian Restaurant, Grande’s Trattoria (Donald Ross Village), Sushi
Joe (PGA), Leftovers Restaurant (Military Trail & University), Mondo’s (US 1 North Palm Beach) and Food
Shack (Jupiter).
October 20th, at 6:00pm we are catering a fabulous TEMPLE WIDE DELI GALA with a large Silent Auction
and Entertainment. Each table will have it’s own Deli tray from a Delray Deli. In order to control costs we ask
that reservations and payment be made in advance. When you enter you can find a table (which most people will)
or make reservations for your own group at your own table.
Children can either eat with you or can join their peers in a separate room with sitters for fun and games for a
nominal fee.
SUNDAY MORNING BREAKFAST SPEAKERS will commence this fall with the League of Woman Voters,
Rabbi Alon Q & A, and ADL speaking on “How our children can survive on College Campus’ while being
targeted by Muslim agitators.” Everyone with children living on a College Campus should attend if possible with
their student.
Have a very happy, safe summer,

As our Phonathon fundraiser comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank
all of you who helped to make our biggest fundraiser of the year a success. A huge thank
you goes out to the following people who gave up their time to make our phone calls. This is not an
easy job that they took upon themselves. It is difficult to ask people for money, but they did for the
good of our Temple. Thank you Hal Baseman, Bruce Cohen, Mary Elias, Harriet & Donald
Schaffer, Ross Federgreen, Bob Feller, Brian LaBovick, Matthew Lane, Amy Russell and Mark
Slifkin for making Phonathon calls.
A special thank you goes to Brian LaBovick who headed up the Phonathon team.
Fund raising is a necessary evil for all synagogues/temples. Dues alone cannot support our Temple so
we count on the generosity of our congregants to give from the heart in order for us to be able to do the
extra things that make us who we are. And I thank YOU for answering our call.
Thank you to the following Temple Beth Am Benefactors who gave generously to our
Phonathon this year. Your names will appear in the Scribe until our next Phonathon campaign.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE
Audrey Ades
The Social Action Committee has been very busy this month….
FAMILY PROMISE
Thanks to everyone who attended the TBA Family Promise Volunteer “High Tea” Meeting on April 23rd! We had a very wellattended, positive and productive meeting.
Highlights of the discussion:
* The board is very supportive of us continuing to be involved in FP and several have already volunteered to participate during the next
hosting week! The board sent a letter of thanks to Oceanview for inviting TBA to host there and several members of Oceanview United
Methodist Church celebrated Yom Ha'atzmaut with us on the beach! Thanks to the Religious School kids who helped to make the
Welcome sign for these special guests!
*Volunteers shared that they were initially hesitant to participate because of fear of the unknown and the general perception of
“homeless people”. However, after volunteering, they realized that the guests are normal people who are down on their luck. Past
volunteers wanted to go back to help again (and to bring their kids).
*Past volunteers agreed to call or email at least 3 friends about their experiences with FP. The more participation we get from our
Temple membership, the more we can offer the FP families and the more we get to experience the fun of tikkun olam together.
*Any volunteer (child or adult) who would like to write a letter about their experience with FP or speak about it in Religious School
class should contact Debby Baker or Lois Remick.
*Items needed at the FP Day Center: potty chairs, high chair, step stool, copy/printer paper, diapers (sizes 4 and 5), laundry soap,
toothpaste, Clorox wipes, and men’s deodorant.
*NEXT HOSTING WEEK: AUG 26 - SEPT 1.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Debby Baker as soon as possible to fill in one of the open slots remaining. We also have
an opportunity to host the week of November 25 th- December 2, 2012 (week AFTER Thanksgiving- as we did last year) - We need
coordinators in order to assume this hosting!
Sign up posters for Family Promise volunteering are located in the Temple lobby.

SCHOOL UNIFORM PROJECT
During the summer months, Temple Beth Am will set up collection boxes in the lobby for donations of gently used and new school
uniforms.
*The School Uniform Initiative, Inc. is a non-profit organization which distributes school uniforms to needy children enrolled in Palm
Beach County public schools. Each student is given two complete uniform sets, which include 2 collared shirts and 2 bottoms.
*Last year, the program collected and distributed approximately 6,500 uniforms to over 3,000 needy students. The uniforms were
distributed to children whose parents were financially unable to purchase uniforms, children living in foster care and battered women's
shelters, and children who live below the poverty line. This year's goal is to distribute uniforms to 5,000 needy students.
*Items Needed (in children's size 5 to men's large): Shirts: Any solid colored polo shirt with a collar. Bottoms: Tan or navy pants, skirts,
skorts or shorts. Bottoms must be slightly above the knees.
All items will be distributed to students before the beginning of school in mid-August. Any questions, please contact Hayley Henderson
at [email protected].
ST. GEORGE'S SOUP KITCHEN
Thank you to last month’s volunteers: Marcy and Hallie Isdaner, Rachael Ruiz, the Schafler family, the Boss family, the Baldwin
family, John Marzina, Rich Remick and Ralph Van Baalen. Volunteers are needed for the 3rd Monday evenings of June, July and
August. Volunteering at St G’s is a great family tikkun olam activity for kids 10 and older and their families! Contact Marcy Isdaner to
sign up ([email protected]). You must sign up in advance to volunteer at the soup kitchen.
NEW AND EXCITING SOCIAL ACTION PROJECTS FOR THE FALL!
*Tikkun Olam Networking Breakfast: Scheduled for Oct 28th. Come to share information about the social action/ tikkun olam/charity or
not-for-profit cause that you are passionate about! Come to learn about groups that could use your help! A limited number of groups will
be chosen to speak about their organizations, so please email Audrey at [email protected] if you would like to participate. We are also
looking for members to serve on the organizing committee for this event. Come on! Get involved! You know you want to!
*TBA and Head Start: For years, we have enjoyed a great relationship with the children and families at Head Start during the
Thanksgiving holiday. This coming year we will expand our relationship with this wonderful organization. Stay tuned! Info:
[email protected].
*Community Outreach Committee: Each month, TBA receives calls from members of the community who need help with food
assistance, clothing, or to pay their monthly bills. A committee is forming to follow-up on these requests. Committee will meet for
approximately one hour/month. If you are interested, please contact Audrey at [email protected].

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
David Sherman, MJEd
Director of Education
Shalom!
Every year at this time I smile when I hear people ask, “Aren’t you glad that school is over? You must be so happy to
have all that extra time!” The truth is that I (already) miss all my kids, and that I also wonder, what ‘extra’ time? My
summer is filled with energy, planning for next year! But before I give away any hints to what’s coming, let us first take
a moment of reflection, to thank ALL those who helped in front of, and in back of, the scenes….
First and foremost, our teachers and aides – we are SO blessed to have such a wonderful group of dedicated, gifted,
knowledgeable, and caring teachers and classroom aides. Then there is the staff, including our wonderful office staff and
volunteers, always here to help make things go (seemingly) effortlessly! (I am leaving out specific names to save space,
although you can find a full listing on our website!)
Then there are the lay volunteers, like Joan Brothers who coordinated the teacher gifts this year (again!) or Laura
Stein and Bruce Cohen, with their many helpers, who made sure that our hungry Tuesday students always had a snack
before Religious School, and Joey Abrin, our Youth Director, along with his JAMTY helpers, who served us bagels &
coffee on Sunday mornings – thanks to all who helped out. And how could I forget to thank the many members of the
Men’s Club who provided the bar-b-ques for us to enjoy! Or Nava Viniar who helped us bake Hamentaschen? The list
goes on and on…. SO, to all I mentioned and (sorry…) forgot to mention – THANK YOU – Todah Rabah! As ‘they’
say, ‘we couldn’t have done it without you!’
(Back to our teachers) I am proud to announce that, once again, our teachers earned the Lilmod U’Lelamed award from
the Friedman Commission for Jewish Education (the CJE). In addition to recognition for a staff that continually keeps
on the cutting edge of excellence in Jewish Education practices, the CJE awarded the Religious School and the
Preschool cash awards, each over $2,500. In fact, more of our teachers than ever before took part in the ongoing
professional development offerings and earned for themselves cash incentive awards.
I will be around most of the summer - please give me a call, send me an email, and/or stop by if there is anything that
you would like to discuss about our Religious School in general, or your child’s experience here, in specific. A full
Religious School / Shalom Chai calendar will be e-mailed to you later in the summer. As always, you may check out our
TBA website, www.templebetham.com for up to date news about our Religious School, and the latest pix from our
events!
In the meantime, please mark down these dates:
August 26th: Temple Open House (check elsewhere in the Scribe or website for details!)
September 4th: First Day of Tuesday Religious School Classes (3rd – 6th ONLY!)
September 9th: First Day of Sunday Religious School Classes (K – 2nd ONLY!)
September 11th: First Night of Shalom Chai (7th – 12th)
Thanks for entrusting your children’s Jewish learning and spirituality with us ~ we hope that we will continue to merit
this trust.
L’Shalom,
David
Thank you to the families and auxiliaries who generously gave
donations to the Camp Scholarship Fund. This year we were able to
offer ten scholarships to our Temple youth.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT
Joey Abrin
Towards the end of every school year our NFTY region, STR (Southern Tropical Region),
puts on a leadership retreat for the following year’s temple youth group leadership boards –
LLTI (Liz Leadership Training Institute). This year JAMTY (our senior youth group) sent a
record 9 kids! Samantha Lutrin, our incoming SAVP (social action vice president) had this to
say about LLTI;
“As soon as I boarded the bus for LLTI, I was filled with excitement. Who knew what
this could hold for me in the future? When I arrived we were all welcomed and
attended a lovely service. We had a mixer and I met many new people from all around
Florida. I had the privilege of staying with the rabbi and his wife. He provided us with
an amazing environment to stay in.
In the days following I learned so much about how to be a leader in the Jewish
community! Overall it was a wonderful experience and I learned so much from it and
made so many new friends. I can't wait to go to the next one and I encourage any teens to go also!”
We hope that you will consider sending your high school teen to
a convention next school year. Here are the dates and locations:
Oct. 12 - 14: Fall Kallah / Temple Dor Dorim, Weston
Dec. 26 - 30: Winter Regionals / Orlando Marriott
Feb. 15 - 19: NFTY Convention / Los Angeles, CA
Mar. 15 - 17: Spring Kallah / Temple Beth Am, Pinecrest
Apr. 19 - 21: LLTI / Temple Beit HaYam in Stuart
For all incoming 6th graders through
outgoing 12th graders, please join us for our first youth group summer
program;
July 10 at 7:00 p.m.
Dinner and a Movie “The Amazing Spider-Man”
Downtown at the Gardens
Please RSVP to [email protected]
for more information!
I’ll be around all for most of the summer, if you’re in town, give me a call and we can meet
for froyo!

BAR MITZVAH
SETH ACKERMAN
It is with great pride and joy that we invite the congregation to join us as
our son Seth Ackerman is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June
16, 2012 at 10:00am.
Seth is a seventh grade student at Poinciana Day School and is a talented
guitar and trumpet player. He enjoys helping in Pre-k and Kindergarten
and he enjoyed being a Junior Counselor at the school summer camp.
Seth enjoys reading, sailing, listening to music and camping. Seth has
been a Boy Scout for 7 years and has attained the rank of Star Scout. We
are very proud of Seth and all of his accomplishments.
For his Bar Mitzvah project Seth is collecting preschool books for Jupiter Head Start. Books will be given to
the children to take home and to the teachers to use in their classrooms. Seth is an avid reader and wants to
share his love of books with others. We are exceedingly proud of the caring young man Seth has developed
into.
We would like to thank Rabbi Alon, Cantor Tanya, and the Religious School teachers for their guidance and
support in preparing Seth for this special day. Our family would be honored to have the congregation join us
for this joyous celebration.
Judi and Ed Ackerman
A NOTE OF THANKS
To all our friends at Temple Beth Am:
Thank you for your prayers, good wishes, phone calls, visits
and concern on my recent illness.
You all helped in my recovery.
I still have a ways to go but I feel stronger each day.
As a “thank you” we are making a donation on your behalf to the
Sisterhood Flower Fund - you have all been so kind.

PARKING IN FRONT OF THE
BUILDING
Have you noticed the “NO
PARKING” signs in front of the
Temple?
Did you know that the front of the Temple is a fire
zone? Did you know that for security reasons, we
do not allow parking in front of the building and in
the circle around the front of the building? This is
in following the recommendations of the Jupiter
Police and the Jewish Defense League.
Not only do we wish to follow the “no parking in
front of the Temple” recommendations for the
safety of our building, but it is also for the safety of
our pedestrians, children and adults alike.
RABBI’S INREACH PROGRAM
Mark & Lyn Michels
So, for the safety of everyone, please refrain from
parking in the front of the Temple. Please use
designated parking spaces when bringing your
child to Preschool/Religious School or when
picking them up.
