shale and release trapped hydrocarbons.
“It’s more of a manufacturing process
than wildcatting,” Flavin explains. “It’s a
matter of: Can you drill appropriately and
hit that zone?”
And, as long as oil stays above a certain
price, this process remains a profitable
one, he says.
The variety of opportunity is certain to
attract those with funds to invest, but in the
midst of the excitement created by Eagle
Ford, one thing professional consultants
agree on is the importance of their favorite
two words: Due diligence.
“There is naturally an increase in curiosity about energy investing, given all that is
going on,” says Ed Hart, managing director at Sendero Wealth Management.
There is a place in all portfolios for energy investments, he says. “We just need
to size it appropriately for each individual
investor’s risk-reward profile,” he adds.
On the pages that follow, four San Antonio-based financial experts offer thoughts
on where the opportunities are — and perhaps more importantly, where they aren’t.

or any Texan unfamiliar with the
term man camps, a drive south of the
city serves as a convincing argument
for the media and economic development
frenzy created by the Eagle Ford Shale.
From convenience stores and living
quarters to oil-and-gas service companies,
the modern-day gold rush created by this
hydrocarbon producing formation is ripe
with both opportunity and risk.
But those who know the oil-and-gas
game know also that it is a boom-and- bust
business, says Wendy Kowalik, president
of San Antonio-based financial consulting
firm Predico Partners.
“Remember what happened with the
last oil boom-and-then bust. There always
should be caution when chasing a return,”
she says. “As Sir John Templeton says: ‘The
five most dangerous words in investing are:
‘This time, it is different.’”
But given the possibilities created by hydraulic fracturing, is it different this time?
Though oil-and-gas is typically cyclical,
the process in the case of Eagle Ford is
not the traditional one, says Meade Flavin,
partner at San Antonio-based Pasadera
Capital LLC, which does M&A and raises
capital for privately held companies.
While geologists have long been aware
of the Eagle Ford formation, it was the process of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking
that made it possible to open up the dense

plenty of bad ideas out there. They usually
involve overconcentration into one asset
or idea at too high a price. One of the
biggest mistakes that can be made is replacing the energy concentration risk with
another form of equally concentrated risk,
especially a risk that is not so obvious at
first glance.
We would recommend an ETF to participate for a $1,000 per year investment.
The iShares U.S. Oil-and-gas Exploration
& Production ETF (ticker IEO) probably
has the most participation rate, with five
of the top ten ETF holdings being key
acreage holders in Eagle Ford. Those five
holdings are: EOG Resources, Apache
Corp., Anadarko Petroleum, Marathon Oil
and Pioneer Natural Resources.

Consider this amount of money
in terms of your net worth, not just the
Eagle Ford. If you can invest your $10,000
through a qualified plan like a 401K -- or
even part of it in an IRA -- that’s much
better. Avoid investing in “drilling deals.”
This is very high risk. The cost of drilling
a well in the Eagle Ford is huge, so there
is always a demand for capital, and very
few people can afford this type of investment.
A word of caution:
Trouble almost always begins with
investment ideas or “schemes” that lack
transparency and/or are illiquid. Many
with newfound wealth find themselves
confronted with all sorts of investment
pitches that sound too good to be true,
because they usually are.

The best way to invest in energy, Eagle
Ford Shale or otherwise, would be to own
public equity or debt of companies involved
in these shale resource plays. There are
exploration and production companies, oilfield service companies and pipeline companies that have operations in and around
the Eagle Ford, and other fields around
the country. Investors will also want to be
keenly aware of being well diversified, so
energy sector mutual funds or exchange
traded funds are also good options.
Texas is full of hard working
entrepreneurs, and some of the
ways these folks are making money
are really interesting. A lot of trucking
companies have been started to help
carry and remove water and chemicals
from individual drilling sites. There are
salt-water disposal well businesses to
help deal with the excess wastewater
produced by fracked wells. There are
“man-camp” type developments to deal
with the increased demand for employee
housing in the region. Many landowners
are being very smart with their properties and leasing or selling small parts out
to larger companies in need of storage
facilities or gathering stations.

The same investing options apply at this
level. However, if someone has $100,000
to invest directly, other opportunities
become available. There are a number of
direct investments available to such an
investor. The key issue will be sourcing
these investments and conducting proper
due diligence such that the investor will
be aware of all the risks associated with it.
Some options might include direct working interest in a producing well, purchase
and ownership of existing mineral interests, participation in a drilling program or
ownership in a service company working
over the Eagle Ford. Each of these carries
a variety of opportunity-specific risks.
While the reward can be high, there is
also the chance of losing most or all of
one’s investment.

When Marsha Hendler earned her degree in hotel and restaurant management
from the University of Houston in 1973,
she was one of just three women graduating with the degree.
Since then, hospitality has flung open its
doors to women managers.
Now, Hendler, former vice president for
La Mansion Hotels who also operates San
Antonio-based marketing agency Marketing Plus, is breaking ground in a whole
new industry once considered a boy’s
club: oil and gas exploration.

“When I stepped into this business I was
worried about how I would be treated as
a woman, about how I would be perceived
out in the field,” says Hendler, president
and CEO of TerraFina. “My experience
has been nothing but positive. My biggest
supporters have been men. They’ve encouraged me through the whole learning
experience.”

ort Worth-based accounting firm Weaver LLP is absorbing via a
merger locally based accounting firm John R. Hannah & Co. LLP.
John R. Hannah & Co. provides audit and tax, estate-planning and
financial-planning services. All of its 10 employees are expected to stay on
in the wake of the merger, including the firm’s owner, John Hannah, who
has been named a senior managing director for Weaver.
This is Weaver’s third merger deal in the San Antonio area over the past
three years. The regional firm absorbed locally based accounting firms
Polansky McNutt Perry & Co. in December 2008 and Edelman Arnold in
December 2009.
Weaver’s San Antonio executive partner, Ed Polansky, says the cycle of
mergers in the Alamo City is not new. In the early 1980s, he says firms like
Arthur Young, Arthur Anderson and PriceWaterhouseCoopers came in

The collegiate all-star football game that
was sponsored by the NFL Players Association and was played in the Alamodome
in February of last year will not return in
2012.
The Texas vs. The Nation game is going
on hiatus in 2012. In its place, the NFLPA
has created its own all-star event featuring
top NFL draft prospects that will be played
at the Home Depot Center near Los Angeles later this month.
The Texas vs. The Nation game will
return in 2013 in a new stadium located
north of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex
in Allen, Texas.
“We wanted to do an event that was exclusively managed by the NFL Players
Association and to implement programs
to assist players with their transition into
the NFL,” says NFLPA spokesman Carl
Francis.
He says that is why the organization
elected to launch a new collegiate all-star

Promoters of the NFLPA game had initially said they wanted to keep it in San

own game, along with other factors, has
sacked those plans.
