How to nourish the relationship
as the children grow, marry and
start their own lives?
Ram S. Ravindran
Our children are grown adults. They are married
and have their own lives. They have to live their
own lives. I am happy and thankful to God that
they have a reasonably good life and that is all a
parent should and could hope for.
Though they don’t live near us they are in our
thoughts all the time. I am sure it is the case
with all loving parents. Periodic visits (once in 2
or 3 times a year) will keep us stay connected.
In this age of high cost of air travel it maybe a
financial burden. In addition, carrying the car
seats for the children, having large enough
house to accommodate several people might
pose additional problems. Traveling with small
children is not an easy chore. If the travel
requires changing planes, it might turn out to be
nightmare if the connection is delayed or missed
(which happens often). Besides they may want to
spend their money and precious vacation time
going somewhere other than visiting Grandpa
and Grandma.

attached to it to make a video chat. Google’s Picasa allows one to
display a large number of pictures on the Web. With a little bit of skill
one can upload videos of children playing, talking, or performing at
school to the YouTube (keep it privately accessible). It should not be a
one-way street. The older parents also have to do their part and share
their lives via the Internet and phone calls. To accomplish these things
the parties have to remain understanding of the emotional needs of
others and be committed and disciplined to do it. In the beginning it
may seem like a cumbersome chore. Once we get it in our minds, it
will become an easy habit.
Enjoy the company of your grown-up adult children and grandchildren.
There is a workable compromise. In this age of
Internet and free email, and universal possession
of cell phones and Magic Jack, we can do a lot
of things to stay connected. Periodic exchange
of emails (even a few lines) will help. It can be
enhanced by attaching pictures or short clips of
audio or video. Periodic phone calls will help in
hearing voices of the family or small children
learning to talk. The periodicity could be once a
month or twice a month. Skype Oovoo, Facetime
all make it possible to make live video calls for
free. With the inclusion of two-way cameras
in the cell phones, and iPad and webcams in
laptops, connecting via Skype or other video
chatting services is a lot easier while both the
parties are in close range of the Wi-Fi. We don’t
have to get to the computer that has a webcam

Basking in reflected glory…Well
done Rakesh Agarwal
Ram S. Ravindran
When an Indian-American student gets selected as a
valedictorian we feel very happy even though that person
may not be our relative or a friend’s child ( Pike High).
Fareed Zakaria came to the US only in the 80s yet he is able
to create and host the GPS (Global Public Square) show
for CNN. His astute political articles and comments on the
happenings around the world are very much respected by
thoughtful analysts. Sanjay Gupta gives his expert opinion
on health matters on CNN. When we see these people on
TV we feel as though they are us. We bask in their glory
though we have nothing to do with their work.
Two days ago a news item was published in the Indianapolis
star. It said “Purdue researcher wins national technology
honor”
http://www.indystar.com/article/20110927/
LOCAL/109270375/Purdue-researcher-wins-nationaltechnology-honor?odyssey=nav|head
It goes on to state “A chemical engineering professor at
Purdue University will receive the highest honor given by
the government to scientists, engineers and inventors, the
White House announced today.
Rakesh Agrawal will receive the National Medal of
Technology and Innovation for his “extraordinary record”
of innovations that improved the energy efficiency and
reduced the cost of gas liquefaction and separation. His
work has helped electronic device manufacturing, liquefied
gas production and the supply of industrial gases for diverse
industries, according to the White House. He is only one
of the 5 engineers to receive this honor. Purdue University
professor Rakesh Agrawal has 116 U.S. patents and nearly
500 non-U.S. patents to his name, along with an impressive
list of awards.
On reading this item I wanted to send it to all my friends.
In the media you read or hear how Indians take away the IT
sector jobs to Bangalore and cause the Americans lose their
American jobs. Here is a news item that shows how IndianAmericans have done work that has benefitted American
companies and earned a good name for the university as
well.
IAI is proud to salute and congratulate the Purdue University
professor on his great accomplishment. This news should
inspire the hundreds of second generation Indian-American
student who attend Purdue University or who are alumni of
that university as well.
In this context, I would like to mention that the brother-inlaw of our own Pinkey Shah (Dr.Haren Gandhi of Michigan)
was the recipient of this award in the year 2003.

Indian-American and other minority
women volunteers are needed
Ram S. Ravindran
The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for
breast cancer in the United States are for 2011:
• About 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in
women
• About 57,650 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will
be found (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of
breast cancer).
• About 39,520 deaths from breast cancer (women)
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women
in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second
leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some
time during her life is a little less 1 in 8. The chance of dying
from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Breast cancer death
rates have been going down. This is probably the result of
finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now
there are more than 2½ million breast cancer survivors in
the United States.
Koman Tissue Bank is collecting breast tissue samples for
research and treatment purposes. For more information
please contact them at (317) 274-4051 or by email to
[email protected]
Some of the city’s top leaders are participating, like First
Lady Winnie Ballard. “If I could help to do research with
tissue, breast cancer, I will do whatever it takes,” she said.
Marion County Health Commissioner Dr. Virginia Caine
is having a camera crew document her donation to
encourage more diverse donors. “I think especially for any
minorities, whether you are Hispanic, Asian-American or
whatever nationality you are from, Native American, this
is a new opportunity that we might not have had before.
It’s opening the ways to have treatments just targeted to
you, specific to you, based on our specific racial and ethnic
groups,” Caine said.

Congratulations to Dr. Evelyn Lobo, Senior Research
Scientist, at Eli Lilly and Company for winning the
prestigious President’s Award for her contribution to
a key research program at Lilly.
