John Mikkiah Thompson
John was born on Dec.20th 1993
The first few years of John’s life
were like any other boy starting
to grow & mature. It wasn’t
until John was past the age when
most kids start talking that we knew
we had been given a unique child.
At first, Autism seemed a little scary
to us, but as John grew it became
clear that he would become a huge
Joy in our lives.
When John was about 5 yrs.old I
was taking piano lessons &
failing badly , I bought a pretty nice
little keyboard so I was determined to
see it through. This is where the REAL
reason for buying the keyboard came
to pass. Whenever John walked passed the keyboard he wanted to reach out & push the keys. He was
fascinated by the sound & his eyes would always get that “shine” to them when he hit the key. As a
parent looking for ANY way to connect with my child who couldn’t talk to me, I made the decision to just
put the keyboard in his room & show him how to turn it off & on.
None of us expected what came next. I never liked sleeping in a quiet house so there was always
music playing at night when we slept..ALWAYS. By the time John was 6 or so he began mimicking the
sounds that he heard at night. He was teaching himself to play REAL music!!! It wasn’t long before he
figured out how to add violin-guitar-harp-organ &drums to his creations. By the time John was 8 yrs.old
he could listen to just about anything & play it the same day. This is what the Lord used to “unlock”
John Mikkiah Thompson’s tongue & once he began to put words together & start SINGING what a
voice he had. By the time John was 15 or so & his voice changed, it began to mature into a pure sound
of Singing Dynamite. To this day John sings almost every weekend at one church or another sharing
his gift of music & song, proclaiming what God has done for him. When you meet John, he is friendly &
smiling & very glad to meet you. It is clear that he is
Autistic after getting to know him a little bit. But, & I do mean BUT, when he holds that mic in his hand
or sits down behind the piano, a Miracle takes place right before your eyes. All of the autism disappears
& you would never, ever know that it even existed. It’s truly amazing to watch how he transforms right
in front of you. We are so thankful for John & who he is & what he is becoming. He is doing what he
was born to do!
Building Nations is a high
energy Christian
Rock/Worship band that not
only ROCKS any stage but
strives to share the
awesome news of

Workshops
1. FAITH and FACEBOOK: showing your faith in the social media
(This is a Jr. High class only)
Covering all social networking, this workshop will help teens be true to their faith and live what
they say they believe, even on the internet. Topics covered will include (but are not limited to)
how to show faith to others and help them grow; how to avoid pitfalls such as peer pressure,
bullying, drama, etc.; proper posting – what not to say; being willing to stand up for what is
right.
2. REAL FAITH for REAL LIFE: see the Bible in a new way – an ancient Book for
a modern world
Isn’t the Bible just a boring book of history? How is the Bible different than any other novel?
How can I read the Bible in a way that really gives it meaning? Can the Bible actually apply to
my life? Explore the truth that the Bible is a living, active, two-edged sword which can truly
affect how we live our lives. Should include some basic “getting started” suggestions for teens
to begin living with the word of God.
3. GROWING YOUR ROOTS: answering your tough questions about faith
How do I know the Bible is completely true? Why do bad things happen to good people? Can
people of other religions (like Muslims and Hindus) go to heaven? Everyone has hard
questions about faith – things they just don’t understand. The leader of this session will bring
an honest, open discussion of difficult topics centered on a Biblical worldview. Teens will have
an opportunity before convention to come up with questions – and even submit them. There
will also be Q&A during the session.
4. SHARPENING EACH OTHER: friends helping friends to understand and grow
in faith
Our theme verse states: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” So how can I
be the type of friend that strengthens and encourages – sharpens – my friends? Teens will
explore friendship in its many aspects, from helping friends grow in the faith, to supporting
friends who are going through times of crisis, to sharing Jesus with friends who ask questions
about the faith.
5. GROWING THROUGH TIMES of CRISIS: when tough times make you think
you might not survive
This workshop is for any teens who have found themselves dealing with a crisis, whether it be
the death of a loved one, the divorce of parents, a diagnosis of cancer, bullying, dealing with
depression, difficult break-ups in relationships, or any of the other myriad things that can
assault us without warning. Learn how to not only survive your time of crisis, but to come out
stronger on the other side of it. (Also appropriate for anyone helping a friend through a time of
crisis.)

Workshops
6. DO I HAVE a FUTURE in MINISTRY? For anyone wondering if God may be calling them to be a pastor, youth pastor, or worship leader. ( This is a Sr. High only
workshop)
Teens attending this workshop will learn how to discern whether God may be calling them to
ministry. The session will include some “job shadowing,” as people who are currently serving in
ministry share what pastors/youth pastors/worship leaders REALLY do. Suggestions of practical
“next steps” will be given for anyone who thinks they are being called to ministry.
7. ART EXPERIENCE: expressions of a growing faith
Participants will work together to create an art project reflecting the theme of the 2012 convention.
8. HONED BY THE CULTURE: recognizing what is real and true
Our culture constantly shapes us – in both good and bad ways. Examine the messages of the
media, fashion and fads, and learn how to recognize what is true and what is real (is Reality TV
real?), separating them from the lies that easily deceive teens today.
9. SURVIVING A BULLY: life doesn’t have to be this way
Unfortunately, bullying is a fact of life for many teenagers. Learn practical steps to deal with a
bullying problem, whether you are the victim or you are trying to help someone else who is a
victim. Be encouraged that your life does not have to continue in fear and depression – and this
CAN have a good ending.
10. WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS: A Faith that Sticks:
Based on research that has been done with high school students and what happens to their faith
after graduation. We will look at how to help young persons develop a faith that sticks with them
after high school and the church youth group. Many young persons drop out of church and
basically leave their faith behind after graduation. What can we do to help our youth develop a
faith that goes with them the rest of their lives?
