updated September, 2012 How to Change or Update Tuition Remittance Requests on Paper Certificates Educational institutions have the opportunity to request that tuition be remitted directly to them from student loan proceeds. As you request tuition remittance, keep these important considerations in mind: • Remember that the student may also need to use some of their loan funding for living expenses. We encourage students to negotiate tuition remittance request amounts directly with their schools. • If you make a change to a tuition remittance request on a paper certificate, the amount you request in tuition remittance can be anywhere from $0 up to the actual value of the loan disbursement. Confirmed Loan Certificates (only for schools that participate in Automated COR) 1) If you use COR to confirm a student as Yes and submit a tuition remittance request, Student Aid Alberta will print a confirmed certificate that lists your requested tuition remittance amount in the ‘Instructions’ area. (This also occurs, virtually, when a student is issued an electronic certificate for an Alberta student loan disbursement.) 2) If you use COR to confirm a student as Yes but do not submit a tuition remittance request, Student Aid Alberta will print the certificate as confirmed and leave the ‘Instructions’ area blank. If the student will receive an electronic Alberta loan certificate, the only way to update the tuition remittance request is in COR, before the certificate is generated. All paper certificates are mailed directly to students. If the student is satisfied with the tuition remittance request amount printed on the certificate, they can submit the certificate to their loan service provider. Confirmed Certificates: How to change or update the Requested Tuition Remittance Amount Once the student receives a confirmed certificate in the mail, if updates need to be made to the tuition remittance amount requested, the student must bring the certificate in to an Authorized Official at their educational institution to have any changes made. Any changes must be initialed by both parties - in ink - within 30 days of the date printed on the certificate. Unconfirmed Loan Certificates If your student receives an unconfirmed loan certificate, they must take it to an Authorized Official at your institution for manual confirmation of registration and signature. You will complete the confirmation of registration section (Section 3 of the Canada Student Loan certificate / Part 2 of the Alberta Student Loan Agreement). At that time, the you have the option of writing a requested amount of tuition remittance in the Instructions / Special Instructions area - see above. Unconfirmed Certificates: How to change or update the Requested Tuition Remittance Amount Once the school has signed an unconfirmed certificate, if changes to the tuition remittance request are needed, the student must take the certificate back to an Authorized Official at the institution. This must be done before the student submits the certificate to their loan service provider. Any changes to the requested tuition remittance amount must be initialed by the both parties - in ink - within 30 days of the date on which the Authorized Official originally signed the certificate.
