Excellence in Writing (Part I)
Excellence in Writing is a two-day workshop based upon Blended Structure and Style in Composition as written and developed by
Dr. James B. Webster, and is an exceptionally effective method of teaching writing to children. Areas of instruction include note
taking, narratives, writing from pictures, creative writing, summaries, essays and library research reports along with stylistic
techniques to add interest and persuasion to their writing. This program is an extremely powerful tool for teaching children to write
effectively by demonstrating how to teach students the skills they need to add structure, style and variety. Within a short time,
students experience a dramatic improvement in their writing which in turn creates high levels of intrinsic motivation. Meeting the
needs of both criteria-based assessment and Ministry Performance Standards, this program is ideal for teachers eager for their
students to achieve excellence in writing. All participants will receive Excellence in Writing resources. PART II: October 18, 2013

PWIM
PWIM is an inquiry oriented language arts strategy that uses pictures containing familiar objects and actions to elicit words from
children's listening and speaking vocabularies. It can be used with classes, small groups or individually. PWIM helps students
become curious about words and helps increase vocabulary, language comprehension and expression as well as sight-word
vocabulary, phonetic/phonemic awareness and writing skills. It is an excellent tier one RTI intervention. This workshop will focus
on PWIM use in elementary school (K to Grade 6).

Moodling with Michael (full day)
Moodle is a widely used online learning management system (LMS) that is very flexible in how it can be customized and used. It
can be changed or added to by teachers on an ongoing basis as needed. Students are able to access specific Moodle areas and
use the resources and participate in the provided activities both at school and at home. The district Moodle server is available to
teachers and students to provide a private and personalized web area for online resources such as:
Webpages
Discussion Groups
Calendars
Documents/Videos/ Other Online Resources
Student Wikis
Student Collaboration
Online Quizzes
Assignment Dropbox
The session will introduce new and developing Moodle users to creating and using Moodle-based resources with students, how to
enroll/manage students within Moodle and other topics of interest to participating teachers for use during this school year and/or the
following school year.

If They’re So Smart…? Why It’s Not Always Easy Being Gifted in School
As we define interventions for struggling students we must also keep in mind the gifted students. In this session Wendy will look at
some of the important questions: Who are our gifted students and what do they look like in class? Why is it important to identify
them? What are we doing for them and what do they want us to do for them? What are their challenges and struggles? You will
walk away from this session with a deeper understanding of these at risk students and strategies to support them.

The Power of Math Games: Primary
Participants will be engaged in playing simple, easy to organize math games that will help to teach and practice numeracy concepts
and basic math skills. Participants will take home a collection of games and ideas for making concept relevant math games using
easily accessible and inexpensive materials. Participants will also learn about our series of math workshops for parents and how to
access and use the district math fair kits or build a kit for your own school.

RTI (Response to Intervention) for Elementary
Brenda and Jill, teachers from Abbotsford SD, will share their journey with RTI. They began with using the RTI model in one
classroom, having the Learning Support Teacher (LST) support the classroom teacher in class with story writing and literature
circles. After attending the RTI conference in Vancouver, they realized that they were well on their way to implementing RTI as a
model for student support. Along with their staff, they are planning to expand this model to include the whole school. They will
share real examples of how they have used RTI in the classroom using differentiated instruction with the support of the LST in
collaboration with the classroom teacher. Using co-teaching as an instructional practice, Jill and Brenda will wow and amaze you!
They will end with the vision they have for their small school.

Learning about Brody – Using Story Grammar in the Classroom
This session will provide teachers with an overview of “Brody” a visual strategy to help students retell stories, tell more complex
stories/narratives and develop improved comprehension skills. Participants will learn how to teach storytelling using the “big
picture” – by building better language skills, students will have the foundation skills for writing stories and understanding literature.
Participants will become familiar with the stages of a good narrative and will learn how students develop narrative skills for language
and literacy from kindergarten to late elementary school. These sessions will use familiar children’s literature to teach these
strategies – all participants will have a small poster to take back to their classroom.

As a Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI²) pilot school, we will share our inquiry of the problem-solving model and the
action taken to create a school community that systematically responds to the learning needs of all students and staff. This initiative
has positively impacted student achievement through systemic and purposeful methods. In this session, we will outline the flexible
structures that are responsive to emerging successes and challenges of Tier 1, 2 and 3 instruction and intervention. Key to our
implementation has been the use of universal screeners, tiered instruction and intervention as well as collaborative problem solving.
We will also share our systematized referral process that is driven by student data and continually monitored to adjust student
support.
