the SMSNA at our 9th Annual Meeting
to be held in the exciting city of Toronto,
Canada on October 16 - 19, 2008. Dr.
Hossein Sadegh-Nejad our, scientific program
chair, and Dr. Gerald Brock, our meeting arrangements chair, have put together and stimulating and
exciting program to be held at the Westin Harbour
Castle, a delightful setting on Lake Ontario.
Our meeting will begin on Thursday, October 16th with a
discussion of the Interface of Basic Science and Clinical
Medicine moderated by Anthony Bella and Arthur Burnett.

from the Bench,” an “Update on Gene Therapy for Erectile
Dysfunction,” “siRNA Technology for Use in ED,” “Priapism
Basic Science” and “Urological Innovations in the Clinic Relative to Basic Science Research and
Intellectual Property.” The president of the Asia Pacific Society for Sexual Medicine will deliver a
guest lecture on behalf of his members. Our Welcome Reception will be held at the Westin
Harbour Castle.
On Friday, October 17th, Dr. Jerzy Gawjewski and Dr. Serge Carrier, will moderate a discussions of ED
in the primary care setting, cardiovascular disease and ED, and optimizing ED therapy using combination
therapy. Dr. Ian Eardley will represent the European Society for Sexual Medicine and deliver a guest lecture
entitled “2008 European Update in Sexual Medicine PDE5 Inhibitors: Over the Counter or Behind the Counter?”
The state-of-the-art series will include “Erectile Dysfunction 1978-2008: An Exciting Journey” by Dr. Ronald Virag, a
true pioneer in the surgical treatment of vasculogenic ED. Also included will be “PDE5 Inhibitors 10 Years Later: Milestones and Future Directions” and “Psychological Mechanisms in ED: The Role of Self-Efficacy in Treatment Outcome.” Our
afternoon session will include state-of-the-art lectures on premature ejaculation, infections and sexual dysfunction; HIV and ED.
Larry Levine will discuss “Doc My Testicle Hurts,” a problem that I am sure all of us have trouble dealing with.
Friday night’s social event will begin at the Horizons Café, where we will enjoy passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Afterward, we
will go up to 360 Restaurant for an exclusive sit down dinner. Dinner at the 360 Restaurant is unforgettable. The decor is elegant
chic, highlighted by wood and chrome, and the view is Fantastic! The award winning cuisine is matched by the selection of over
550 international and Canadian wines from the new Cellar in the Sky.
Saturday, October 18th we will have a morning session, moderated by Dr. Greg Broderick and Dr. Peter Pommerville, which will
begin with a guest lecture by Dr. Sidney Glina, president of the Sexual Medicine Society of South and Latin America on the “Prevention of Sexual Dysfunctions.” Several thematic topics will be discussed including prostate cancer treatment related issues in
ED; Peyronie’s disease management; hypogonadism; and LUTS and ED. State-of-the-art lectures will include a discussion of “Fad
Diets and Dietary Supplements: What Works and What is Worthless” by Dr. Mark Moyad. Sunday, October 19th our meeting will
conclude with the Society of Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons Update moderated by Dr. Culley Carson. Topics include: penile prosthesis implantation, surgical treatment of male incontinence; and the diagnosis and treatment of infections and complications of
prosthetic surgery. Dr. Todd Linsenmeyer, of the Kessler Medical Rehabilitation Research and Education Center, will deliver a stateof-the-art lecture titled “Sexual Dysfunction in the Patient with Spinal Cord Injury.” Our meeting will conclude with two exciting
debates: the Journal of Sexual Medicine Breakfast Debate: “Bicycle Saddles Should Have a Warning Label: Use of This Saddle is a
Risk for Erectile Dysfunction” and an SMSNA special debate: “2-Piece Inflatable Penile Implants Should Rarely, If Ever, Be Used.” I
look forward to a lively discussion.

Objectives
Needs Assessment
Sexual medicine is experiencing fast developments and progress in
all areas of male and female sexual dysfunctions. These rapid
developments and progress include basic sciences and clinical
sciences, resulting in major advances in diagnosis, measurement,
epidemiology, discovery, treatment, and prevention of sexual
dysfunctions. The area of pharmacotherapy is undergoing revolutionary progress with the development and approval of new effective
and safe oral drugs. In addition, surgical therapy has experienced
significant innovations in prostheses and surgical techniques. A
multidisciplinary diversity of health care providers care for patients
with sexual dysfunctions. There is a great need to bring up to date
education and a broad spectrum of information to health care
providers confronted with large numbers of patients with sexual
dysfunctions.
Educational Objectives
The target audience is urologists, primary care physicians, internists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, gynecologists, psychiatrists,
psychologists, sex therapists, physician assistants, nurses,

residents, fellows, students, researchers and all those interested in
sexual medicine. This educational event will be publicized through
direct mass mailing and the internet, in addition to advertisements
in major medical journals. This meeting will present up-to-date
information on male erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation,
Peyronie’s disease, priapism, hypogonadism, female sexual
dysfunction and other male and female sexual dysfunctions. The
information will cover many of the related fields, such as anatomy,
physiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, measurement, discovery, research, treatment and prevention. The participants are expected to acquire knowledge and skills for the evaluation and treatment of patients with the various sexual dysfunctions.
The meeting will include state of the art lectures, debates, symposia, a workshop and an interactive session, in addition to peer
reviewed podium and poster presentations.
At the conclusion of this meeting, the attendee will be able to:

Assess a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology,
risk factors and psychosocial impact of male and female
sexual dysfunction
Describe the basic evaluation and management strategies
for male and female sexual dysfunction in clinical practice
Describe indications, techniques and complications of
prosthetic surgery for male sexual dysfunction and combined procedures for incontinence and ED
Interpret clinical trial data and investigative techniques in
the management of sexual dysfunction
Explain male hypogonadism and recognize clinical signs &
symptoms of male hypogonadism, including special
populations
Describe tests and lab measurements of total T, free T, bioavailable T to affect clinical diagnosis and appropriate
monitoring after initiation of treatment
Recognize the relationships between components of the
metabolic syndrome with androgen deficiency and be
aware of the signs and symptoms of hypogonadism as
part of standard medical assessment of the adult male;
explain the different types of androgen replacement therapy
including the advantages and disadvantages of various
delivery systems
Illustrate the use of PDE 5 inhibitors with androgens in
men with sexual dysfunction
Describe the role of PDE5 inhibitor daily dosing in the
management of erectile dysfunction
Recognize the role of diet and dietary supplements in
erectile function
Describe important milestones in the management and
diagnosis of erectile dysfunction, including the history of
intracavernosal injection therapy and the development of
PDE5 Inhibitors
Identify new developments and non-surgical technologies
in the management of Peyronie’s Disease
Recognize important trends and developments in the basic
science of priapism physiology and pathophysiology
Assess the relationship between ED and coronary artery
disease and be familiar with risk stratification and cost
effective evaluation
15. Recognize the latest developments in the management of
ED in patients with spinal cord injury
16. Describe psychological mechanisms and the role of self
efficacy in ED treatment outcome
17. Illustrate the association of lower urinary tract symptoms
(LUTS) and ED; Understand the latest strategies in
managing LUTS and ED
18. Assess the role of circumcision in combating the spread of
the HIV epidemic and have an understanding of the global
economic and cultural implications of advocating circumcision to reduce HIV infection
Evaluation of Quality of Activity
The educational quality of the meeting will be assessed with
evaluation questionnaires to be filled out by the participants.

6th Annual Urology Residents
Surgical Symposium Information
The Society of Urological Prosthetic Surgeons (SUPS) and the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) are
pleased to announce the Sixth Annual Surgical Symposia being held during the SMSNA’s annual meeting in Toronto on
October 16 – 19, 2008. Through unrestricted educational grants to our societies, we are sponsoring the surgical
symposium free of charge to a select number of North American urology residents.
The surgical symposium is part of the SMSNA’s annual meeting and is sponsored through educational grants from
American Medical Systems and Coloplast Corporation. The symposium will be proctored by leading urologists skilled in the surgical management of erectile dysfunction, penile reconstruction necessitated by Peyronie’s Disease and male stress incontinence. Each participant
selected will receive expenses to cover coach airfare and two nights’ hotel accommodations.
The surgical symposium will include grand master lectures and hands-on cadaveric training. Participating residents will be offered a complimentary SMSNA meeting registration and a banquet ticket for SMSNA’s Annual Banquet Saturday night where they will be recognized as a
participant of the surgical program.
A nominated resident candidate should be a 4th or 5th year urology resident of an AUA-accredited urological residency program who has
demonstrated leadership skills within their urology residency.
Urology residents who would like to experience a lecture and lab environment in which to perfect their skills in implanting prosthetics and have

The Hockey Hall of Fame is an exciting place for both

Ontario Place is another popular Toronto attraction, offering 96
acres of fun and entertainment. Ontario Place has exciting rides
and attractions including Bumper Boats, Free Fall, The F/X Adventure Theatre, mini golf, and the Cinesphere,
the world’s first permanent IMAX® theatre. If you are interested in viewing some interesting Canadian architecture, you may want to consider visiting Casa Loma. This castle was built by Canadian financier Sir Henry Pellatt to
fulfill his childhood wish for a castle. Its secret passageways, towers, sweeping staircase, 800-foot tunnel, stables
and 5-acre gardens provide a unique and exciting tourist attraction. Another well known building in Toronto is the CN
Tower, the city’s tallest and most defining landmark. Visitors not afraid of heights can test their courage by walking across the
glass floor, which is located 113 stories above the ground.
Shoppingng
Toronto offers visitors a diversified and comprehensive shopping experience through the
Path, a series of interconnected pathways and malls beneath the city where a wide array
of stores, restaurants, salons and businesses are located. The Path is home to almost
17 miles of shopping. Nothing captures the city’s energy more than Toronto’s markets.
Located in various parts of the city, these markets are great places to shop for various
exotic and fresh foods, vintage clothing, and souvenirs. Toronto’s street shopping also
provides visitors with an enjoyable shopping experience, with the high-end boutiques of
Bloor-Yorkville, the trendy shops of Queen West or the neighborhood stores of Bloor West Village.

If you are searching for a spectacular dining experience, Toronto has a great deal to offer. The Keating
Channel Pub & Grill offers great food and fun with and extensive lunch and dinner menu, 13 beers on tap,
pool tables, and a water front patio with a breathtaking view of the city’s skyline. Adega Restaurante is
located in the heart of downtown Toronto, and offers lobster, seafood and fresh fish from Portugal. Americans missing food from home may want to try Pinnacle Restaurant and Lounge which offers an a la carte
dinner menu that includes scrumptious steaks, salmon and spring lamb.
