How to apply Solagard
DIY Ready Render Coarse
Wattyl Solagard Ready Render Coarse Finish is a durable premixed acrylic polymer texture
coating. It provides high build, full coverage texture finishes which vary through different
application techniques to achieve either bagged or uniform render style finishes.
Before
Features
Wattyl Solagard Ready Render Coarse Finish is self priming
on most exterior surfaces for simpler and faster use. It assists
with hiding surface imperfections and provides coverage of
raking patterns in (mortar joints) brick and blockwork and
resists the growth of mould and mildew.
Use on
Cement render, brick, blockwork, masonry, fibre cement and
autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) surfaces such as garden
walls and outdoor feature walls.
Not suitable for walk on areas or areas with vehicular traffic
such as driveways, or on porous or terracotta pots. Not for use
on surfaces where water is moving through from behind the
structure.
After
Preparation
What you will need:
Drop sheet
Masking Tape for windows and trim, adjoining walls
Lambswool mitt
Trowel optional
TIP - Rinse mitt applicator with water before use and
remove excess water.
Choose from 2 x Coarse Texture Finishes
Colorbond® Windspray RR
HEAVY BODIED COARSE BAGGED TEXTURE FINISH
Applied with a lambswool mitt.
Rosetta Stone RR
UNIFORM, SMOOTH RENDER STYLE FINISH
Applied with a lambswool mitt and smoothed with a trowel.
Preparation
•
Ensure surface is clean and dry, and free from chalking,
loose friable material, dust, dirt and grease. All loose,
peeling or flaking material must be removed. Fill holes
and cracks with a suitable filler and sand lightly to an
even finish. If mould is present, clean surface with
household bleach then rinse well with clean water. Ensure
any moss or lichen is removed.
•
Ensure all new cement and concrete surfaces are fully
cured prior to painting. Typically this may take a minimum
of 4-6 weeks. Ensure concrete surfaces are free from
any bond breakers, formwork release agents, curing
compounds and efflorescence (white salts).
•
Ensure that fibre cement sheets are installed and joined
as per manufacturers’ recommendations.
•
Previously Painted Surfaces: Test soundness of
previously painted surfaces by cutting a small X in the
paint with a sharp blade. Stick a piece of tape firmly over
the X and pull off. If the paint pulls away, the surface
is unsound. Repeat at random in a number of areas.
Unsound surfaces should be stripped. Sand any enamel
painted surfaces until gloss is removed and apply one
coat of Solagard Low Sheen White as a key coat.
Application
1. Use of a drop sheet is highly recommended.
2. The texture appearance and style achieved from Solagard
Ready Render products will depend on the application and
finishing methods used.
3. Generally only one coat is required on relatively uniform
surfaces. Two coats may be required on raked brickwork
and other non-uniform surfaces; particularly if a uniform,
rendered finish is to be achieved.
4. Practising the application technique on a board or unseen
area is recommended before attempting large jobs,
as these are different techniques to those used when
applying normal paint.
5. When applying Solagard Ready Render it is important
to apply a generous amount of product. Do not try and
overspread the material as the desired texture and
durability will not be achieved.
Coverage
One litre will normally cover up to 1 square metre per coat,
depending on surface texture, porosity and method of
application.
Drying and Recoating
1. Surface dry under normal conditions in 4 hours.
2. Recoat or topcoat after 24 hours.
3. Drying time may be longer in cold or humid conditions.
4. Do not apply when temperature is below 10°C or above
35°C or when humidity is very high. Do not apply when
rain, dew or frost is expected.
TIP - Mix contents thoroughly before and during use to
ensure an even application of texture.
1. Heavy Bodied Coarse Bagged Texture Finish
Applied with a mitt
STEP 1.
Cutting In
Scoop product onto mitt and cut in while you apply.
STEP 2.
MITT Application
Apply generously and spread over the surface using a random
sweeping motion. Work in sections. Do not overspread.
TIP - COARSE FINISH Do not over apply in raking/mortar joins in brick or blockwork as texture will sag.
STEP 3.
MITT PROCESS
Avoid overloading the mitt.
Keep hand flat to avoid removing material unevenly. Rotate mitt
to prevent uneven wearing.
STEP 4.
Second Coat
Allow 24 hours for the surface to dry prior to applying the second
coat. Follow the same application directions.
2. Uniform, Smooth Render Style Finish
Applied with a lambswool mitt and smoothed with a trowel.
STEP 1.
Cutting In
Scoop product onto mitt and cut in while you apply.
STEP 2.
MITT Application
Apply generously and spread over the surface using a random
sweeping motion. Work in sections. Do not overspread.
TIP - Practice the application technique on a board or dicsrete area before attempting large jobs, as there are different
techniques to those used when applying normal paint.
STEP 3.
TROWEL PROCESS
Use a plastic trowel to create a smoother, more uniform finish.
After the finish has tacked off smooth with the trowel in small
circular motions.
STEP 4.
Second Coat
Additional coats are generally required to hide raking in brick
and blockwork. Follow the same application directions as
per first coat.
