Fuel Safe Brand Fuel Cells
Safety is issue #1 on the street or track and this drop in replacement fuel cell
addresses that issue head on! In the racing world, the brand name Fuel Safe
needs no introduction. For over twenty years, Fuel Safe has manufactured racing
fuel bladders and accessories for all types of vehicles. Now, they have designed
models specifically for our early Mustangs & Cougars in a natural finish aluminum
housing for a stock-like appearance! The Fuel Safe fuel cell is constructed along aircraft
guidelines, and features a puncture resistant coated rubber bladder inside a TIG welded aluminum housing, and a stout fuel filler plate with an integral anti-backsplash valve. They are designed
to be used with pump gasoline, racing gasoline, or gasohol which makes these fuel cells perfect for
any type of Cougar project! Fuel Safe Fuel Cells provide the greatest level of safety and peace of mind
you can buy for your Mustang & Cougar. They are available in either 16 or 22 gallon capacities. Housings
available in red or black powder coat at additional cost.

in black or red powder coat available.
The Sportsman Cell provides a high quality product at an affordable price. It
features a standard, coated rubber bladder, internal fuel strainers, full foam
anti-slosh baffling, internal pickup assembly, a stout, standard fill plate, plus
a three year warranty! Natural finish aluminum housing. Custom housings in

Do you want the safety and peace of mind that a fuel cell offers, but don’t want to
have to open your trunk to fill your gas tank? This new product from Fuel Safe
was designed especially to solve that exact problem. It is designed to be used
with the Filler Neck Kit that is shown below. When installed, you have the
safety of a fuel cell, but with the outer appearance and convenience
of the stock gas tank and filler neck! You even use your original gas cap!

Fuel Safe Late Model Mustang Fuel Cells are designed to fit perfectly into
the stock location with a 20-22 gallon capacity. They include the correct
mounting straps, and will use your stock filler, fuel pump, pick-up, vent,
sender, and wiring harness! The 22 gallon Cobra Cell features a rubber
bladder and aluminum housing. The 20 gallon Street Cell is made of
tough polyethylene and requires no housing.

I decided to do an article on this simple install because
of a conversation I overheard at the swapmeet a few
days ago. Two guys were looking at one of the billet
gas caps that was in the box. “That gas cap is awesome!” One of the guys said to his friend. “I’d buy it,
but I wouldn’t want to have to drill that many holes in
my car to install it.” So I approached them. I took the
cap out of the box and showed him the back side and
how it attached just like a stock gas cap. No holes to
drill, easy to install, and easy to put the stock gas cap
back on at any time. The perfect custom product.
In case you’re wondering, the gentleman I was talking
to did not buy the cap. But his comments showed me
that we needed to make sure that our customers know
how easy this product is to install. But first, we need a
little history lesson.
The stock Mustang gas cap is held to the car by a
cable. The first Mustangs built, 1964 1\2’s as we call
them today, did not have this cable. As a result, many
gas caps were left at gas stations when forgetful gas
station attendants did not put them back on the cars.
(Remember, 1964 is well before the public pumped
their own gas!) Also, since there was nothing to hold
them to the cars, many Mustang gas caps were stolen
as the cars sat at home in the driveway or in the parking lot at work. With so many complaints for a “better
idea”, it didn’t take Ford long to come up with a revised
gas cap with the cable to keep it locked onto the car.
Now, on to the install!
Step 1.) We have to unbolt the cable to release the
gas cap from inside the trunk. Do this by opening the
trunk lid and, using a 7\16” socket and an extension
long enough to clear the bracing in the trunk, remove
the retaining nut and remove the gas cap.
Step 2.) Put the cable stud through the hole where the
stock gas cap was removed from and put the nut on
it. Tighten it up, but not too tight. A lock nut is supplied
with the new Mustang gas cap.
Step 3.) Put the new Mustang gas cap on the car and
enjoy it! Remember, since it is new, it may be a little
tighter fit than the old stock gas cap.
