Introducing your new collection service
This guide explains how to use your new recycle for Dorset kerbside
collection service, including:
• what to put in each container
• what to do on your collection days
• how to report a problem
The seven Dorset councils (not including Bournemouth and Poole) have
agreed to work together as the Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) with a
single collection service. This will increase our recycling, reduce the
rubbish we send to landfill and drive down costs.
In this guide you will also find lots of useful ideas for other ways to
reduce, reuse and recycle for Dorset, as well as how to contact us.

3. Check your collection days
Your collection days may change. Your new collection calendar will be posted
to you before the end of February. You can also check your collection dates at
dorsetforyou.com/recycle from the week beginning 24 February.
Rubbish and recycling collections from your current service will continue until
the end of February. You should start filling your new containers after the last
scheduled collection of your current service.

What to do on collection day
Putting your containers out
• Please put your containers and sacks out no later than 7am on your
collection day and no earlier than 6pm the evening before
• Leave your containers at the kerbside, unless we have agreed for you
to have an assisted collection, trying not to obstruct pedestrians if possible
• No unauthorised rubbish sacks or loose rubbish will be collected
(except after Christmas. See page 10)
• Additional recycling will be collected if you place it in similar sized
boxes to your green recycling boxes. Always keep glass separate
• Please place any paper and cardboard in one of your boxes that has a
lid to stop the materials getting wet
• It is possible to stack the boxes on top of each other, if you want to
save space
• Please place your food bin next to your sacks/boxes with the
lid ‘locked’
• We will return your empty containers to the collection point. Please
take them back within your property by the end of your collection day
• At Christmas and New Year, regular collection days may change.
See your collection calendar for changes to your regular dates.

Report a missed collection
If your containers are not collected by the end of your collection day, you
can report a missed collection. Please wait until the end of the day as
collection rounds may take longer to complete. Please note, your containers
may be collected at different times of the day.
You have been provided with a supply of 52 authorised sacks for the
year, equivalent to two sacks per fortnight. Please note that we will
not provide additional sacks if you run out before the end of the year.

Food waste collection (weekly)
Collecting food waste stops it going to landfill, where it produces
harmful greenhouse gases. Food waste will either be composted
and turned into a soil improver or used to produce energy.

Locking your containers
Your brown food bin and caddy both have
‘lockable’ lids to keep animals out. To ‘lock’
your container, close the lid and move the
handle to the front (as shown in picture).
Using your kitchen caddy
Your kitchen caddy is there to help you collect food
waste in the home before emptying it into your larger
food bin outside. It has small holes in the lid to prevent
food waste sweating. Please do not put your
kitchen caddy out for collection.
6
dorsetforyou.com/recycle
You can put food waste straight into your caddy or line it with
compostable liners or newspaper to make it easier to empty.
Lining your caddy with compostable liners
Please only use liners with the ‘compostable’ logo (above). Do not use
plastic bags. Compostable liners can be bought at most supermarkets, many
local shops and online. For a list of local stockists, go to dorsetforyou.
com/recyclefordorset/food or call (01305) 221040.
1. Tie and lift the liner
out of your caddy
2. Place into your food
bin outside
Alternatively, line your
caddy with newspaper
For more information go to dorsetforyou.com/recyclefordorset/food
Lining your caddy with newspaper
Use two sheets of newspaper to line the inside of the caddy, making sure
you can close the lid. When the caddy is full, lift the paper ‘parcel’ out and
put it into your food waste bin.
Tips
• Keep the caddy lid closed
• You can clean your caddy by swilling it out with a mild
detergent or bicarbonate of soda
• Your caddy is dishwasher safe

Batteries
Use your reusable bag for household batteries
(such as AA, AAA, ‘button’ and rechargeable
batteries). Place the bag on top of one of your
green recycling boxes with a lid.
Additional recycling
We will collect additional recycling if it is put in
similar sized boxes to your green recycling
boxes. Always keep glass separate. Paper and
cardboard needs to be put in a box with a lid
to keep it dry, but glass does not.
Why collect glass separately?
If glass smashes and gets mixed in with other
materials, it reduces the quality of materials, such as
paper, that can be recycled. Collecting it separately
allows us to sort the materials easily and produce
better quality recycling.

Using your authorised sacks
✗
Additional rubbish
You may want to double-bag pet waste or nappies
with your own plastic bag before putting it in an
authorised sack. Please note that the two rolls that
you have been given are your allocation for the
year.
We will not collect any unauthorised additional
rubbish sacks or loose rubbish. The only exception is
the first collection after Christmas, when we will
collect up to two additional sacks per household.
Additional rubbish can be taken to your local HRC.
Please separate items out for recycling before visiting
the HRC wherever possible.

Household recycling centres
There are 11 household
recycling centres (HRCs)
across Dorset where
you can take a range
of household materials,
including:
Our HRCs recycle and recover more than 75 per cent of all waste they
receive. Please help us by separating your waste and placing it in the
appropriate containers at the HRC.

Household recycling centres
East Dorset residents can use Millhams in Bournemouth if they show
a council tax bill. People in some parts of East Dorset may also apply
for a permit to use Nuffield in Poole. Dorset residents can also use
Somerley in Hampshire.
Visit dorsetforyou.com/recycling-centres or call
(01305) 221040 for more details.
Mini recycling centres
You can also take certain materials to mini
recycling centres. These include foil, waxed food
and drinks cartons, clothes and textiles and small
electrical items. You can find your local mini
recycling centres and what you can recycle at
them at dorsetforyou.com/recycling-centres
or by calling (01305) 221040.

Bulky and commercial waste
If you need to dispose of a large item of furniture or other household
goods, you can arrange for it to be collected from your property.
A commercial waste collection service is also available for businesses.
Furniture reuse
A number of furniture reuse organisations in
Dorset will collect unwanted items such as
furniture and white goods for free to sell to
people on low incomes at affordable prices.
For more information, visit
dorsetforyou.com/furniturereusegroups
or call (01305) 221040.
Bulky waste collections
We can collect bulky items, such as furniture,
white goods and televisions, from your home for
a charge. For more details or to request a
collection go to dorsetforyou.com/bulkywaste
or call (01305) 221040.
Commercial waste collection service
The Dorset Waste Partnership offers local
businesses a competitive collection service for
rubbish and also for paper and card recycling.
This includes people working from home, B&Bs
and holiday homes. Disposing of commercial
waste in household bin collections or at household
recycling centres is illegal. For more details, visit
dorsetforyou.com/commercialwasteservices
or call (01305) 221040.

Reduce, reuse and recycle
The recycle for Dorset service makes it easy to recycle but it’s always
better to reduce the amount of waste we produce in the first place.
Have you tried?
Composting at home
Home composting is the most sustainable way
to recycle garden waste and some food. We
have secured an offer for compost bins, water
butts and accessories at reduced prices. Go to
getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 4444
(quoting reference number DOR 010A).
Using real nappies
Parents could consider using modern washable
nappies rather than disposables. Washable
nappies are now shaped, can be fastened
with poppers or velcro and can be put in the
washing machine on a normal wash. We
offer £30 towards the cost of real nappies
per baby. For more details visit
dorsetforyou.com/realnappies or call
(01305) 221040.
Reducing your food waste
You can reduce your food waste by only buying
as much as you need, freezing items you won’t
use for a while and using up any leftovers. You
can find lots of ideas for tasty meals using
leftovers at dorsetforyou.com/lovefoodhatewaste
