Nyce Control “How To’s” – #004
Pantry with Single Door
using Door/Window Sensor NCZ-3011
2013-01-14
In our series of “How To’s” we assume a dealer level of Composer knowledge and that the automation discussed is
being added to an existing Controller and project.
DESCRIPTION
In this “How To” we show how to use the Nyce Control Door/Window Sensor (NCZ-3011) in conjunction with a
Control 4 Wireless Switch (C4-SW2-Z) to automate the lighting in a small, kitchen pantry.
DESIRED FUNCTIONALITY
To provide useful functionality to the home owner, this installation must do the following:
 Turn the light on when the door is opened
 Turn the light off when the door is closed
 Turn the light off after 5 minutes if the door is left open or not closed properly.
PRODUCT CHOICES
 As the area to automate has a single door edge which opens and closes, the Nyce Control Door/Window
Sensor (NCZ-3011) is the correct choice for this application.
 The light to be controlled has no requirement for a dimming function and the existing light switch location has
access to a 120VAC neutral connection, so the Control 4 Wireless Switch (C4-SW2-Z) is the correct choice for
this application.

1
LOADING THE PROJECT AND CREATING A NEW ROOM
IN our example, the “System Design” column shows a three floor house with different rooms on each level. A new
room must be created to hold the NCZ-3011 and C4-SW2-Z devices. Select “Room” under the “Items” column and
drag it into the proper floor under the “System Design” column, in our case the Main floor. After dragging the new
Room rename it, in our case we call it “Pantry”.
2
ADDING THE WIRELESS SWITCH TO COMPOSER
Select “Wireless Switch” under the “Items” column and drag it into the Pantry room under the “System Design”
column. Rename the new Wireless Switch to describe it, in our case we call it “Pantry Light”.
3
INSTALLING THE WIRELESS LIGHT SWITCH
Replace the existing light switch in the wall with the Control 4 Wireless Switch (C4-SW2-Z) follow the installation
and safety instructions included with your Control 4 product. When finished, your C4-SW2-Z should be showing
green LED lights in both top and bottom, if not refer to your Control 4 documentation for trouble shooting.
4
IDENTIFYING THE WIRELESS SWITCH WITH THE NETWORK
Now we must identify the new Wireless Switch with the project. Follow the installation instructions included with
your Control4 product.
5
CONFIGURING THE WIRELESS SWITCH
Under the “System Design” column, select the Pantry Light and configure its properties under the “Properties”
column. In our case we have made the top LED light pink for ON and the bottom LED light green for OFF.

6
ADDING THE DOOR/WINDOW SENSOR TO COMPOSER
Before we physically install the Nyce Door/Window Sensor, adding it into Composer is a two-step process: first a
generic Door Contact Sensor must be added, then the Nyce Control driver must be added and bound to the generic
Door Contact Sensor.
6.1
ADDING THE GENERIC DRIVER
Select “Door Contact Sensor” under the “Items” column and drag it into the Pantry room under the “System
Design” column. Rename the new Door Contact Sensor to describe it, in our case we call it “Pantry Door CS”.
6.2
ADDING THE NYCE DRIVER
Under the “Items” column select Nyce Control as the Manufacturer for either the Local or Online Databases.
Double-click the Nyce Control NCZ-3011 driver. Rename the new Door/Window Sensor to describe it, in our case
we call it “Pantry Door DWS”.

6.3
BINDING THE NYCE DRIVER TO THE GENERIC DRIVER
Under the “Connections” column select the “Control/AV” tab and then the Nyce driver “Pantry Door DWS”. You
can see that “Contact DI” and the Door Contact Sensor driver “Pantry Door CS” have no information for their
connections. In the “Control & Audio Video Connections” column select the “Contact DI” and drag it onto the Door
Contact Sensor driver “Pantry Door CS”.
The Door Contact Sensor driver “Pantry Door CS” will now show up as connected to the “Contact DI”.

IDENTIFYING THE DOOR/WINDOW SENSOR WITH THE NETWORK
Now we must identify the new Door/Window Sensor with the project. Under the “Connections” column select the
“Network” tab and then the Pantry Door DWS under the “IP Network Connections” column. You can see that the
Pantry Door DWS has no information for its address.
Double-click the Pantry Door DWS and the “Identify” box will pop up.

INSTALLING THE DOOR/WINDOW SENSOR
The Nyce Control Door/Window Sensor (NCZ-3011) comes with the
following:
 Main Housing – top and bottom parts
 Magnet
 CR2032 coin cell battery
 Double-sided tape strips for mounting
 Size #2, Phillips screws for mounting
In our example we will use the double-sided tape. Adhere two strips of tape to the bottom housing tape recess
areas above and below the product label. Snap the screw-mount tab off of the magnet and adhere two strips to
the flat bottom side of the magnet. The snap edge of the magnet housing can be cleaned up with a utility knife.
Peel off the adhesive backings and press the magnet firmly in place on the door and firmly press the bottom
housing next to the magnet, on the inside of the door frame. There is a rectangular recess on the bottom housing
that indicates the proper alignment of the housing to the magnet.
Insert the Door/Window Sensor by sliding it into the back housing on the inside of the door frame.

9
CHECKING THE DOOR/WINDOW SENSOR
Under the “System Design” column, select the Pantry Door and confirm that the Enrollment Status in the
“Properties” column shows “Successful Enroll”, this may take up to two minutes to appear after identifying.
10
PROGRAMMING THE DOOR/WINDOW SENSOR AND WIRELESS SWITCH
Providing the desired functionality requires the creation of a timer for the light and the linking of the door and
timer events to the turning on and off of the light. A timer is an excellent tool in Composer for controlling lights as
it allows for the light to be turned off after a period of time to insure energy savings to the customer.
10.1
CREATING A TIMER
In the “Agents” column select “Timer”. Press the “New” button and a window will pop up to create a new Timer.
Give the Timer a name and it will be added to the list in the “Timers” column, in our case “Pantry Light”. Set the
timeout period for the Pantry Light, in our case 5 minutes.

10.2
PROGRAMMING THE TIMER TO TURN OFF THE LIGHT
The first step is to link the condition of the timer expiring to the shutting off of the light. In the “Programming”
column select “Timer”. Change the Timer selection to “Pantry Light” and select “When the ‘Pantry Light’ expires”.
In the “Actions” column select “Pantry Light”. In the “Pantry Light Actions” column select “Off”. Drag the Green
Arrow action into the “Script” column. The Pantry Light will now turn off when the Pantry Light timer expires after
5 minutes.

10.3
HOMEOWNER FORGETTING TO TURN OFF THE LIGHT
If the homeowner manually turns on the light, then leaves without turning it off or shutting the door, then we
want the timer to automatically turn off the light. In the “Programming” column select “Pantry Light”. In the
“Pantry Light Events” column select “Top Button Single Tap”.
In the “Actions” column select “Timer”. In The “Timer Actions” column select “Pantry Light” and “Start Timer
‘Pantry Light’”. Drag the Green Arrow action into the “Script” column. The Pantry Light timer will now start when
the Top Button of the Pantry Light Wireless Switch is tapped.

on/off of the light.
10.4.1 DOOR OPENING
In the “Programming” column select “Pantry Door CS”. In the “Pantry Door CS Events” column select “When the
Pantry Door CS opens”.
