LMU after successful graduation from another German university.

Instructions on how to enroll at the LMU as a German Student
after successful graduation from another German university.
This document is intended to summarize which steps and material are needed to enroll at the LMU as a German PhD student who graduated from a German university. All the information can also be found online, however, this summary might speed up the collection of information or may serve as a checklist of what to acquire.
The author does not guarantee that the below information is correct and/or sufficient to
successfully enroll at the LMU for PhD studies in Astronomy. However, the author was
successfully enrolled after taking the steps described here.
More (and probably regularly updated) information (in German) in particular for doctoral students can
be found online at
http://www.uni-muenchen.de/studium/administratives/promotion/index.html

-----------The below information might differ for later semesters than SS10.
A) Things that need to be done well ahead of enrollment deadlines because the time they take is probably not entirely in your hands
1. Get the 'Zulassung zum Promotionsstudium'
a) ask your supervisor to write a short statement like “I confirm that I supervise student XXX”
on a piece of paper that has the institutes logo, date and signature on it
b) take
▪ the document from a)
▪ a copy of your 'Diplomurkunde' + Original to show
▪ a copy of your 'Diplomzeugnis' (the one with all the grades) + Original to show to the
secretary on top floor (right wing) at the Physics institute in Munich (Schellingstr. 4,
near Universitaet). They should give you a letter called 'Zulassung zum
Promotionsstudium' for this.
2. Get a letter about your health insurance coverage
Option 1: you are in a 'gesetzliche Krankenkasse'. Lucky you. They should be able to write a
confirmation for you that you are insured
Option 2: you are privately insured (which is the case for e.g. ESO students). You need to
convince your last (in case you ever had one; if not, any) 'gesetzliche' that you need a
'Befreiung'. A statement that you do not need to be insured as a docotoral student is not
enough!
3. Make sure that you are exmatriculated from your last university
A letter stating that you will be automatically exmatriculated by the end of semester XX is not
the document you need. You need to apply for exmatriculation (which can be years after you
thought you were automatically exmatriculated) and then receive a letter with a summary of
your university studies and the 'Rentenbescheinigung' attached.
B) Things to find in your memory and basement and the final show
1. Prepare the following information. You will need to fill out the online form. (Sure this is not
all the information you will have to type into the form, but hopefully you know things like your
name and date of birth by heart)
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)
f)
g)

number of 'Urlaubssemester'

last and second last exams (e.g. 'Diplom' and 'Vordiplom')
semesters of first and last enrollment at the last German university before LMU
degree (e.g. 'Diplom'), date and semester, average grade of graduation from this university
degree (e.g. 'Vordiplom'), date and semester, average grade of second last exam
2. Fill out the online form (and print it) at
http://www.unimuenchen.de/studium/hochschulzugang/bewerb_einschreib/verfahren/online_einschreib/online
_einschreibung/index.html
In the final summary of a possibly correctly filled form the following keywords might appear in
the following sections (listed below are only some important points):

c) Copy of Diplomzeugnis + Original to show
d) Copy of the 'Zulassung zum Promotionsstudium' from A.1
e) Original of the confirmation from your health insurance from A.2
f) Copy of the exmatriculation from A.3
