How to File a Roofing Warranty Claim

Most roofing products are designed to last for at least as long as its warranty period. Occasionally, circumstances arise that require the filing of a roofing warranty claim. Most major
roofing manufacturers have made this process is relatively simple. The vast majority of roofing manufacturers require you to file a roofing warranty claim within 30
days of first becoming aware of a possible defect. We highly recommend that you read your
roofing warranty prior to filing a claim. The terms and conditions set forth in the warranty are
very explicit, and you can be assured that the roofing manufacturer is going to stick to these
guidelines. They are not likely to give you more than what is stated in their warranty.
Shingle roofing warranties typically range from 20 to 50 years. Many homeowners don’t realize
that their roofing warranty does not fully cover the entire cost of replacement for a manufacturer
defect. After the initial “up-front” period of ownership (the first 3 to 10 years depending on the
product), the warranty becomes pro-rated. This means that of the roofing manufacturer will only
cover a percentage of the cost of replacement depending on how old the roof is.
In addition, roofing warranties rarely cover the cost of labor and the replacement of the other
components of the roofing system. There are a few roofing manufacturers that offer extended
warranties (that can be purchased at a premium) that offer limited coverage for labor and other
roofing components. You may have to re-invest several thousand dollars into your roof to
replace it to cover the cost of labor, component products, and disposal. This comes as a big

Once a claim is placed with the roofing manufacturer, they will either send a territory sales
manager or a representative from their technical department out to your home to inspect the
issue. In some cases, the manufacturer will require you to send them samples of the
problematic area as well as several photographs. This can be a bit challenging, and it may be
best to have your roofing contractor take care of this for you, as they will need to ensure that the
roof is waterproof after the samples have been taken.
After the technical department has time to review the claim, they will present response to your
claim. This response will detail their findings as well as a course of action. This course of action
will follow the guidelines of the warranty. That is why we encourage you to read your roofing
warranty in its entirety prior to filing a claim so that you know what to expect.
