The facts on: Guarana
Botanical and Historical background
The Guarana plant is a woody climbing plant that grows in the tropical forests of the Amazon Basin. It has yellow flowers that turn
into fruits each carrying three nutty brown seeds. These guarana seeds are dried and roasted for six hours before they can be
used. Indian tribes of the Amazon basin have been using guarana for many centuries. The Quarami tribe, for instance, used it to
fight bowel complaints, and the Maues always have and still do benefit from its potent therapeutic properties. Many South
American natives harden guarana powder and turn it into an eatable rod. They carry these rods around and nibble on them,
whenever they need a substitute for food. Many Indians are capable of travelling as long as two or three days in a row, with the
guarana rod as their source of energy!!!
Nutritional qualities
Guarana is a high-energy source that is used to increase alertness, fights fatigue, control appetite, ease muscle cramps and calm
nervous tension, and it is an excellent mood elevator. Guarana is also used as an aphrodisiac and as a tonic against hangovers
and menstrual pains.
The active ingredient of the seeds, called guaranin, is almost identical to caffeine. The percentage of guaranin (caffeine) in a
guarana seed is about 4-5%, which is about three times as high as the caffeine content of normal coffee beans. However, unlike
the instant and addictive kick or a sudden feeling of anxiety that caffeine may result into, guarana is absorbed by the body much
more gradually. That is why, compared to a beverage containing caffeine, the stimulating effect of a guarana beverage lasts twice

Let us first explain these two terms:
º Alkaloids are the nitrogenous products of the plant’s metabolism. They are the natural organic bases of many green plants,
characterized by their specific physiological action or toxicity. Usually, one plant contains not one but several, closely related
alkaloids. The most famous examples of alkaloids are: ephedrine, strychnine, nicotine, codeine and morphine.
º Lactones are a structural class of chemicals similar to alkaloids, thus bases of organisms characterized by their specific
physiological action or toxicity.
Fo Ti Tien (= ho shou wu) (polygonum multiflorum)
This Chinese herb is a tonic for the nervous system, the liver, the kidneys, blood and the blood vessels. First, we would like to
specify exactly which plant we are referring to, for in the West, there seems to be some confusion about this plant. In China the
name fo ti tien refers to a different plant than this one, namely: hydrocotyle asiatica menor. This plant is also available in Western
countries, where, strangely enough, it is also called fo ti tien; somewhere in the past there must have been a Western herbalist
who confused the two, leaving us with the mess. The plant that we are referring to here, polygonum multiflorum, is called ‘ho shou
wu’ in China (are you still with us?). Luckily enough, this mix up is not such a big deal, because the properties of the hydrocotyle
asiatica menor and the polygonum multiflorum are almost equal.
Effects: It is a nerve tonic, a relaxant and a memory enhancer. Moreover it is a tonic for the liver, kidneys and blood (prevents
blood clots and lowers blood pressure) and it strengthens the blood vessels. It is considered a rejuvenating tonic that increases
fertility and sexual potency and improves the metabolism. Animal’s studies showed that it counteracts tumor growth. These effects
only apply to long-term regular use of this product.
Use/dosage: Boil in water for 10 minutes before drinking; 1 teaspoon, daily.
Side effects: none
Damiana (turnera diffusa or turnera aphrodisiaca)
Family: Turneraceae
The leaves of a shrub native to the tropical parts of America, can be smoked or made into a tea. It was well known among the
Aztecs who used it as a tonic and a remedy for impotence.
Active ingredients: the alkaloid damianien.
Effects: It is a relaxant and a mild aphrodisiac that produces a marihuana-like high. Regular but moderate use has a tonic effect
on the sexual organs and is said to regulate the hormonal balance in females.
Dosage/use: Make tea by adding two heaping tablespoons of dried Damiana leaves to 1/2 liter of boiling water, and allow boiling
for 15 min, or smoking from a pipe. Since the smoke is harsh on the lungs it is advisable to use a water pipe.
Side effects: Frequent use and extremely high doses may be harmful to the liver.
Ephedra (= Ephedra Sinica or Ma Huang)
Ma Huang* (Ephedra Sinica*), is the Chinese denomination of this plant that the Chinese have been using as a natural stimulant
for over 5000 years.
Active ingredient: ephedrine
Effects: Ephedra works as an energizer and a stimulant; it produces a clear mind and increases stamina. The active ingredient of
Ma Huang, ephedrine, has been proven to act as a natural energetic factor that turns body fat into heat, helping you to loose
weight in a natural way. Finally, ephedrine has a relaxing effect on the airways, which makes it suitable for the treatment of
asthma.
Use/dosage: Put in water and leave to boil for 10 minutes before drinking; max. 1 teaspoon per person. Note that other products
that contain much higher concentrations of efedrine are strong stimulants; they are not suitable for daily consumption in order to
loose weight!!

Side effects: May cause insomnia, raised blood pressure and or heart rate, anxiety, cold shivers. Ephedra inhibits the
MAO enzyme; do not combine it with other MAO inhibitors (see listing Mao inhibitors) (It is important to realize that certain other
products with a high ephedrine content are stimulants. These are pretty strong uppers that work very stimulating. They are
certainly not designed to be used as a dietary supplement to induce weight loss or to reduce the symptoms of asthma!!!!!!)
There are other types of ephedra plants that grow in other parts of the world. Some of them are the ingredients of certain
products; therefore we would like to mention them also:
Ephedra Nevadensis (=Mormon tea)
This plant grows in the desserts in the south-western part of the USA. Its effects are similar to the Asian version, only milder. This
plant, the Mormons use as a stimulant. To them, it is a good alternative to coffee, because their religion does not allow them to
drink coffee.
Ephedra Pachiclada
Among other areas, this type of ephedra grows in Afghanistan. The people there put it in their milk and boil it before drinking it.
Ephedra Distachya (Dutch: zeedruif)
This is the European version. It acts similar but not as strong.

Betelnoot (=Betel nut) (=piper betle) (Areca catechu)
Family: Palmaceae (palm family)
This is a large seed of the betel palm, a tall South Asian palm tree that can reach 20 meter in height. In Asia it is chewed in
combination with roasted chalk, and sometimes with a few other herbs (chalk and saliva help to release the active substance).
Millions of Asians enjoy this nut on a daily basis, just as much as we enjoy our coffee.
Active ingredients: the alkaloid: arecoline.
Effects: The active substance, arecoline, stimulates the nervous system: improves learning and thinking abilities. It increases
respiration and decreases the workload of the heart. It is both an upper and a mild sexual stimulant. Adding a few drops of lemon
juice to the powdered nut and keeping it in the mouth to mix it with saliva best release it. It is also chewed in combination with
kava-kava.
Use/dosage: add one teaspoon to a cup of coffee or hot chocolate or simply eat one teaspoon (with drops of lemon juice), leave
it in the mouth for a while and wash it away with a drink.
Side effects: very high doses may cause dizziness and diarrhoea; frequent use may lead to reddening of teeth and gums.
Colanoot (=Kola nut or Cola nut) (cola nitida)
Family: Sterculiaceae (cacao family)
This is the seed of the cola acuminata tree that is native to Central Africa, but nowadays, it also grows in Jamaica, Brazil and
India.
It was once one of the two active ingredients of Coca-Cola (the other ingredient was the infamous coca); and according to
American author W. Poundstone, cola nut still is one of the ingredients (the recipe of Coca-Cola is secret). It is certain that it can
still be found in Pepsi-Cola. In Brazil it is traditionally used to make a beverage with and to heal minor cuts, and Jamaicans use it
as an aphrodisiac.
Active ingredients: caffeine, kolanin and theobromine
Effects: Cola nut is an upper, a stimulant and a mild aphrodisiac and it stimulates the digestive tract and the combustion of body
fats.
Use/dosage: add one teaspoon to a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate milk.
Side effects: may lead to restlessness or insomnia (comparable to the side effects of caffeine).
Guarana (paullina cupana)
Family: Sapindaceae
These are the crushed, nutty seeds of the guarana plant, a woody climbing plant that grows in the tropical forests of the Amazon
Basin. It has yellow flowers that turn into fruits each carrying three nutty brown seeds. Indian tribes of the amazon basin have
been using guarana for many centuries. The Quarami tribe, for instance, used it to fight bowel complaints, and the Maues always
have and still do benefit from its potent therapeutic properties. Many South
American natives harden guarana powder and turn it into an eatable rod. They carry these rods with them when they travel
(sometimes for days) through the forests and nibble on them, whenever they need a substitute for food.
Active ingredients: guaranin, theobromin, theofyllin

The main ingredient, guaranin, is almost identical to caffeine. One guarana seed has a guaranin content of about 4-5% ( +/-three
times as high as the content of a normal coffee bean).
Effects: Guarana is a high-energy source that is used to increase alertness, fights fatigue, control appetite, ease muscle cramps
and calm nervous tension, and it is an excellent mood elevator. Guarana is also used as an aphrodisiac and as a tonic against
hangovers and menstrual pains. The stimulating effect of a guarana beverage lasts twice as long and is much more relaxing than
that of a caffeine drink. Unlike the instant and addictive kick or a sudden feeling of anxiety that caffeine may result into, the body
absorbs guarana much more gradually. Unlike caffeine, it does not cause stomach and bowel complaints (e.g. cramps).
Use/dosage: Add two teaspoons to a large glass of cold-water milk or juice.
Side effects: Excessive use may lead to habituation, nervous tension or insomnia.
Kava-Kava (piper methysticum)
Family: piperaceae (pepper family)
This is a tall shrub, native to the South Pacific islands, (the Hawaiian islands and New Guinea). The root pulp and lower stems are
used to make hot tea or to put in a cold coconut or fruit drink.
In the South Pacific kava-kava is also called the plant of knowledge. In the Fiji islands the medical healers, called ‘dauvagunu’
(meaning: ‘expert at drinking kava-kava’) gained access to the ‘Vu’, a spirit force, through the consumption of kava-kava. In this
manner they obtained their healing power.
Active ingredients: 6 Kawalactones: kawain, dihidrokawain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin, dihydroyangonin (these
act synergistically)
Effects: In the south Pacific kava-kava is well known for its calming and tension relieving properties, it can provide deep physical
relaxation yet a clear mental state. It is also used as a stimulant and mild aphrodisiac. It stimulates the sexual organs and the
urinary tract. In addition, people have been using it as a remedy for stomach cramps, headaches, bladder pain, and at one point
in history, it was even used to fight the most painful symptom of gonorrhoea: the discharge.
Use/dosage: add 1 or 2 teaspoons to: 1) hot water or warm alcohol for immediate consumption, or; 2) cold coconut milk and
leave in the refrigerator for 24 hours - In the South pacific people would leave it in a mountain stream overnight, but a mountain
stream just might not be located within a reasonable walking distance - . The people of the South Pacific chew on the Kava-Kava
leaves before putting them into coconut milk. It has been proven that human saliva contains enzymes that activate the
kavalactones. To obtain the same effect without having to chew first you may do the following: add 30 grams (1 ounce) of Kavakava to 3 deciliter of water or coconut milk, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, and one tablespoon of lecithin* (available in most
Health Food Stores), and mix in blender until the mixture gets a milky appearance. It is also possible to activate de lactones by
leaving it to soak in hard liquor. Kava-kava is also chewed in combination with betelnut.
Side effects: Frequent, long-term use may affect the kidneys, appetite, and cause temporary skin reactions (yellowing), this will
disappear when use is discontinued. When used moderately (once a week) these side effects will not occur. Moreover, these side
effects will disappear immediately after use is discontinued.
Muira Puama (lyriosma ovata)
Family: Oleaceae
The inner bark and the root of this tall South American tree is used to make tea. It is probably one of the most thoroughly tested
herbs, since it has been included in the Brazilian pharmacopoeia* (*= the official list of medicinal drugs, their uses and
properties), as a possible remedy for impotence. The literal translation would de ‘potency wood’.
Active ingredient: muirapuamine (an alkaloid that is somewhat comparable to yohimbine)
Effects: It works as a stimulant and a mild aphrodisiac (especially for males). Moreover it increases the sensitivity of skin and
sexual organs and, when used regularly, it increases virility.
Dosage/use: Put 1-2 heaping tablespoons of muira-puama in 1/2liter of water and allow it to boil for 15 minutes. The effects
should be felt after 1/2hour. A more potent lotion can be obtained by soaking 30 grams of Muira Puama in 1/2 liter of vodka for
two weeks; every day it should be shaken well. A few sips should suffice. Finally, it may be interesting to know that in Brazil it is
also rubbed on the genitals males to stimulate an erection.
Side effects: No side effects known.
Sabal Fruits (=Saw Palmetto or Zaagpalmbessen) (sevenoa serrulata)
These are dark purple berries that grow on a small palm tree, the saw palmetto (serenoa repens) that is native to Central
America. The saw palmetto has sword like leaves that grow in a fan shape. Its fruits are dried and made into a tea.
Active ingredients: polysaccharides
Effects: It works as a mild aphrodisiac; moreover it improves the sexual potency. It increases the sensitivity of the skin and the
sexual organs and it also stimulates the urinary tract. Finally it works as a toning agent of the male reproductive system. This

toning effect has been confirmed by several studies. In addition it seems to be a remedy for enlarged prostate glands and it is
used to increase female fertility and stamina. Finally, it is used as a hormone stimulant and claimed to enlarge testicles and
women’s breasts. The tea made out of these berries, was very popular among the native American Indians.
Use/Dosage: Add 5 dried berries to 1 cup of water; max. 2 cups a day. Soaking the berries in distilled alcohol for a week will
intensify the effects. If you wish to use it as a toning agent or to increase virility, you should use it for a longer period of time (you
may decrease the dosage).
Side effects: high doses may lead to fatigue and increase the pressure on the bladder.
MAGIC HERBS MIXED by Sirius > Products®
Mellow Yellow
A nice smooth and relaxing smokers mix based on damiana (see Damiana under MAGIC HERBS) leaves. A good alternative to
nicotine.
Brainstorm TEA BLEND
A number of Asian herbs and roots of plants, mixed together according to an ancient Buddhist recipe. This blend contains green
sencha tea, ginko biloba, jasmine, fo ti tien, taiga root, galangal root and ginger root.
Effects: Stimulates meditation and the functioning of the brain. Is a tonic for body and soul.
Side effects: None.
Use/Dosage: Put 1 or 2 teaspoons in the teapot and poor about 1/2 litre of boiling water onto it and leave it to soak for a while.
Aphrodisia TEA BLEND
The main ingredient of this sensuous, erotic tea mix is damiana (see Damiana), a plant native to the tropical parts of America. The
leaves of this plant are combined with passionflower, orange peals and orange blossom.
Effects: An aphrodisiac that produces a relaxed, harmonized feeling and a mild high. Long term usage increases potency,
regulates the hormone system in women and stimulates the urinary tract.
Side effects: Excessive and long-term usage may harm the liver.
Use/dosage: Poor 1/3 litre of boiling water on 1 teaspoon of the blend, leave to soak for a while and sweeten with honey,
according to your taste. If you are using extremely hard water, you should not allow it to boil (+90C).
MAGIC SMOKE
Salvia Divinorum
The active substance of Salvia Divinorum is Salvorin A. In the USA this substance is often used in its concentrated form, which
may produce a trip many consider extremely overwhelming. The concentrated extract of Salvia Divinorum is also available by
Sirius> under the name “Holy Smoke”. Tests have shown that 1 gram of dried leaves contains between 1.5 and 2.2 mg. of
Salvorin A. Because of these substantial differences in content, we strongly advise you to always be careful before taking higher
doses.
The effects of Salvia Divinorum are more or less comparable to those of magic mushrooms: euphoria, hallucinations, warm and
tingling sensations and an altered state of consciousness.
Salvia Divinorum can be consumed as follows:

*Chewing it (as chewing tobacco)
Use a dosage of +/- 3.5 grams. Put only a small part of this dosage in your mouth at first and chew on it for about 7 minutes. Keep
repeating this, until you have chewed up the entire dosage. After 15 minutes you should be able to feel the first effects. The
experience will last for about an hour.
*Smoking it from a bong
Use a dosage of 1 to 2 grams. If it is your first time, limit your dosage to 1 gram to test your response! It is necessary that you get
the entire dosage into your system within a very short time span (in 2 to 3 inhalations), otherwise, you will only experience a mild
rush. This means that you need a pipe with a large head (one that fits the entire dosage) and a large compartment for the coolingwater. Due to the high boiling point of Salvorin A. you need a pencil torch or a “jet-flame” lighter, rather than a regular lighter. It is
recommendable to use a self-extinguishing lighter, or to have someone else to put out the torch for you, for the Salvorin rush will
take effect almost immediately!! On average, the effects will persist for 10 to 15 minutes.
*Smoking it from a plastic bottle
The dosage is 1 to 2 grams. If it is your first time, limit your dosage to 1 gram to test your response! Roll a pure salvia cigarette of
the entire amount you wish to inhale. Fill a bucket up with water. Get a plastic bottle with a cap. Cut the bottom from the bottle and
make a whole in the cap that fits the salvia cigarette. First you hold the bottle vertically and push the bottle into the water as deep
as possible, with the open bottom side downwards. Now you place the cigarette in the hole in the cap of the bottle (burning side
up) and slowly pull the bottle out of the water (not all the way!). The vacuum that is created inside the bottle causes the smoke to
be sucked into the bottle. Now you take out the salvia cigarette, turn off the bottle cap and place your mouth around the
bottleneck. Slowly push the bottle back into the water while you inhale the smoke out of the bottle. The Salvorin rush will take
effect almost immediately and will persist for 10 to 15 minutes.
The best effects may be obtained by combining chewing with smoking. You should start with chewing, and when the effects
commence, you smoke some from a bong. When using this method, the onset of the effects produced by smoking will be more
gradual and will persist much longer.
When you are a more experienced consumer of Salvia Divinorum, you may want to try to combine it with a mushroom trip. It is
best to administer Salvia when the mushroom trip is at its peak.

Holy Smoke®
Take a break into another dimension.
Holy Smoke is an extract (5 or 10 times) of Salvia Divinorum, a plant containing the alkaloïd Salvanorin A. Salvanorin A is a very
strong entheogen comparable to the effects of DMT.
A 10X extract means Holy Smoke contains 10 times as much of the active ingredient -salvanorin A- as does the plain leaf.
Standarized means it is made using pure salvanorin A and is not a crude extract. This vial contains 12,5 mg of pure salvanorin A
redeposit into 0,5 gram of dried salvia leaf.
Dosage:
This vial (10X) contains about 30 moderate doses or 10 full doses. For your first experience, try a moderate dose which is one
medium sized lungful. If this proves to be not enough, then next time you use the product you can try a full dose, which is one
lungful. Use a regular pipe, a bong or water pipe can deliver too large a dose and therefore this is not recommended, especially
during your initial explorations.
Use:
First find a comfortable position, preferably sitting down in a quiet environment. Have a sitter present for your first few
experiences. Under the influence of salvia people can sometimes get up and walk around and be quite unaware of their
surroundings. Take one medium sized lungful and keep the smoke in for as long as is comfortably possible. Effects develop
almost immediately and last about fifteen minutes, and then wear off very cleanly with no hangover or residual body load. This
extract cannot be used orally.
Effect:
A number of themes are frequently experienced with salvanorin-A:
- Becoming objects.
- Visions of various two-dimensional surfaces, films and membranes.
- Revisiting places from the past, especially childhood.
- Loss of body and/or identity.
- Various sensations of motion, or being pulled or twisted by forces of some kind.

- Uncontrollable hysterical laughter.
- Overlapping realities, the perception that one is in several locations at once.
Warning:
Do not use when pregnant, nursing, depressed or on medication. Do not operate a motorized vehicle or machine when under the
influence of salvia. Use prohibited to those less than 18 years old. Do not use this product in conjunction with other psychoactive
substances; it can be greatly potentate by other compounds. Take your explorations with Salvia Divinorum slowly; get to know the
territory one step at a time. Use it with the respect and reverence it deserves and it will reward you with deep insight.
Fumancer
The Smoking Fun Enhancer!
Fumancer by Sirius> products® is the first legal smoking mix that really works! This extract from passionflower* and scullcap*
gives an effect that is comparable to the effect of opium or cannabis. Because of the high quality of the extracts, the effect of
Fumancer is much stronger than that of the smoking mixes known thus far. You can smoke Fumancer pure, or mixed with hashish
or cannabis. Mixed with hashish or cannabis, Fumancer gives a very special effect!
Dosage/use: Mix one quarter of a teaspoon with tobacco and role a joint from this. Don’t use more than a quarter of a teaspoon,
because the blend might not burn well enough. You can also smoke Fumancer in an opium pipe or vaporizer. Another good
method to smoke it is hot knifing.
Important: Remember not to touch the powder with your fingers, because it could get sticky. And always close the bag very
carefully, because the powder attracts moist very easily.
HALLUCINOGENIC SEEDS
Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seeds (Argyreia Nervosa)
Family: Convolvulaceae (Bindweed Family or Morning Glory Family)
These are the seeds of a plant that is not so much a rose as it is a woody climbing vine with silvery foliage and violet flowers. This
plant originated in India, but is now spread over many tropical regions. Otto Degener, who made a description of the Hawaiian
flora, first described it in 1930 - which explains the name of this plant -.
Active ingredients: d-lysergic acid (LSA or LA-111), d-isolysergic acid, lysergol, chanoclavine, chymoclavine and ergonovine,
elymoclavine. Note: LSA is present in the form of a salt; so it is water soluble (not alcohol or ether soluble).
Effects: Hawaiian Baby Woodrose is mind altering. It produces a dreamlike condition in which colours, sounds and feelings are
intensified. It alters ones perception of the outside and the inner world. This is accompanied by a physical lassitude that will
eventually lead to sleep. The initial effects start anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes; you will gradually climb to a ‘peak‘ that will
decrease just as gradually. The whole experience takes somewhere around 5 or 6 hours.
Use/Dosage; Both Hawaiian Baby Woodrose (argyreia nervosa) and Morning glory (ipomoea violacea) seeds contain LSA as
active ingredient. As a result, they produce very similar effects. Only, the concentration of LSA is much higher in Hawaiian baby
woodrose (argyreia nervosa), meaning that a dose of only 4-5 seeds is sufficient. Grind the seeds until you obtain a very fine
powder (use a coffee grinder or a pepper grinder). Be careful not to take the fine powder in your hands for the
active ingredient can be absorbed through your pores! Leave the powder to soak in a small bowl of water for about 12 hours.
Then you can either drink the whole mixture or strain out the powder (you can use a coffee filter) and drink just the water. Drinking
the water only, without the powder is highly recommendable for people with a sensitive stomach, for the powder may cause
nausea. Another suggestion to avoid nausea is to mix cayenne pepper with the powdered woodrose (pepper opens up the gut,
so that the powder leaves the stomach much quicker). You can also take an air or carsickness pill beforehand. A third method is
to wash it down with one or two glasses of strong alcohol; it speeds up the absorption (do not
Continue drinking for then the alcohol intoxication will diminish the effects of the seeds). Finally, if you prefer to reduce the
physical lassitude the seeds produce, you can take some natural ephedrine along with these seeds, for instance: one or two Fast
Forwards® or one Exiter®.
Side effects: Some people may experience nausea, vomiting and or abdominal cramping. It may also cause drowsiness. Not
suited for pregnant women because it contains substances (ergonines) that are uterus stimulating. Not suited for persons with a
history of liver disorders (e.g. hepatitis).
Morning Glory seeds (Ipomoea Violacea)
Family: Convolvulaceae (Bindweed Family or Morning Glory Family)
These are the seeds of a large climbing vine that has heart shaped leaves that are 4 to 10 cm in length and 3 to 7.5 cm in width,
and white, purplish and pinkish, funnel shaped flowers. It is native to North, Central and South America, the West Indies and the
Far East. Aztec priests were already using it; they would mix it into a rub that was given to those who were to be sacrificed in

order to eliminate all their fears. Today it is still used by the healers or ‘curanderos’ of the Maztec Indians; they make a brew with
it that they drink to obtain information about the possible cure of a patient, and to predict future events.

Special Remarks:
1) Popular denominations for morning glory are: heavenly blue, pearly gates, blue star, summerskies, wedding bells and flying
saucers and tlitliltzin (Aztec name).
2) A variation of morning glory found mainly in Mexico, often simply called Mexican morning glory, is denominated Ipomoea
Turbina (formerly: Rivea Corimbosa), it is also known coaxihuitl and its seeds as olliuqui; the flowers of this variation are hanging
down more. This variation is also widely spread in the Caribbean, but there it is not consumed so much for its psychoactive
properties.
3) Above the name ‘morning glory’ is used for one variation, namely Ipomoea, the most famous one. However, ‘morning glory’ is
also a common denominator for all the variations of the ‘morning glory species’ or the ‘bindweed family’; this includes ‘Hawaiian
baby woodrose’.
Background information on ingredients;
Amino Acids:
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins; hundreds of amino acids linked together to form a chain of polypeptides, which
forms a protein. Human proteins contain +/- 20 kinds of amino acids. These proteins are necessary for the construction and
functioning of an organism. Certain proteins are involved in building and strengthening of bones, nails, teeth, tendons etc. Others
are needed for transporting oxygen, the immunity system and the hormone system. Certain amino acids turned into
neurotransmitters in the brain, which are chemical substances that transmit impulses from one neuron to another. Naturally,
different neurotransmitters induce different effects. If you lack certain neurotransmitters, it may lead to an altered state of mind. All
foods contain amino acids. However, they always contain a wide variety of amino acids, and those different amino acids compete
with each other in crossing the blood/brain barrier. Therefore, if you are trying to obtain the desired effect, it is better to take the
amino acid in its pure form, and on an empty stomach. Do not exceed the amounts advised on the package, because more is not
always better (the liver will just have to work harder). The amino acids present in some of our products will be listed here.
L-Arginine: This is an essential amino acid, especially during times of stress and growth. It helps the pituary gland to release
the growth hormone*. Moreover it is needed for nitrogen transport that is required for muscle metabolism. It is also an aid in the
regeneration of the liver.
Phenylalanine: This is an amino acid that is a precursos of Tyrosine, another amino acid. Both Phenylalanine and Tyrosine are
turned into dopamine* and noradrenaline*. It increases alertness, fights stress and elevates your mood. It also helps to release
the growth hormone*.
L-phenylalanine: The L-form is the natural precursor for the neurotransmitters dopamine* and noradrenaline*. It is an effective
agent against depression and an effective instrument for weight control.

Taurine: It provides energy and helps your body to recover from physical strain. It is important for metabolism and helps to
generate nerve impulses.
Tryptophan: It is an amino acid that the brain uses to make serotonin. It is a moodlifting substance that may help relieve
migraine headaches. Possible side effects: headaches, serious congestion, constipation, intestinal cramping (result of contraction
of the smooth muscle caused by serotonin)
L-Tryptophan: It is used by the brain to make serotonin*, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, for it inhibits neuron activity, it is important
in inducing sleep, and the feeling of satiation.
Tyrosine: It is an amino acid the brain uses to make noradrenaline* (=norepinephedrine). It stimulates the release of growth
hormone*.
Substances within the body:
Hormones, enzymes and neurotransmitters
Noradrenaline or norepinephrine: Brains version of adrenaline. Important in primitive drives and emotions like sex and
appetite. It stimulates the immune system and it suppresses appetite. A low noradreneline level causes depressions.
Dopamine: An important neurotransmitter that affects sex drive and other drives, mood, immune system, tissue growth and
repair, locomotion.
Acetylcholine: A neurotransmitter that affects emotions like sex drive, and state of alertness. It is also involved in long term
planning and state of mental focus. It is made in the body from choline.
Serotonin: A neurotransmitter that, among other things, affects mood, sleep and appetite.
It is called ‘inhibitory’ because it reduces the neuron activity instead of increasing it. The amino acid tryptophan helps the brain in
making serotonin.
MAO: monoamine oxidase: This is an enzyme that is produced by the body and that breaks down certain amines and renders
them harmless and ineffective. It also breaks down the monamine neurotransmitters dopamine, noradrenaline (=norepinephrine)
and serotonin, keeping them at a normal level. The term MAO inhibitors refers to all substances that inhibit theactivity of the MAO
enzyme (see MAO inhibitors).
Other substances:
Ephedrine: Ephedrine is the active substance of a plant called ephedra. This ephedra plant has a few varieties all over the world;
the Chinese variety, ma huang, is the most famous and potent one. The Chinese have been using ma huang for over 5000 years.
Yet, only in the 1930’s this plant was introduced to the medical scientists in the West. The chemical structure is somewhat similar
to that of adrenaline (epinephrine), only ephedrine, unlike adrenaline, is also effective when taken orally. For this reason,
ephedrine acts as an upper. Especially highly concentrated extracts act quite similar to amphetamines. This is not surprising; for
amphetamines were discovered as scientists were searching for the formula for a synthetic version of ephedrine. Presently, a
synthetic version of ephedrine does exist only, it is not tolerated (digested) as well as natural ephedrine by many. Since ephedrine
also relaxes the lungs and airways, it is used for asthma treatment as well. Moreover it stimulates the combustion of fat (it turns
fat into heat) and act as an appetite suppressant. Therefore, in small amounts, it is an effective agent for loosing weight. With
small amounts we refer to amounts that provide about as much energy as a strong cup of coffee; this is the case with: Thermogen
Tea by Pearson & Shaw and with ephedra sinica (= dried parts of the plant) under Magic Herbs by Sirius Products®. The high
concentrate extracts that are to be used as a stimulating upper, are: Bionix® and The Force® under Herbal Speed, and of course

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON INHIBITORS
What you should be aware of when using products containing substances that is MAO
inhibiting:
What are MAO inhibitors and how do they act:
The MAO (monoamine oxidase) enzyme that is produced by the body breaks down certain amines and renders them harmless
and ineffective. It also breaks down the monamine neurotransmitters dopamine, noradrenaline (=norepinephrine) and serotonin,
keeping them at a normal level.).
When the MAO enzyme increases its activity, it will result in slightly lower to extremely low levels of the neurotransmitters
dopamine, (nor) adrenaline and serotonin. These lowered levels can lead to depression. In case of extreme depression it may be
beneficial to administer MAO inhibitors, for they decrease the activity of the MAO enzyme, so that higher levels of the mentioned
neurotransmitters are maintained.
However, MAO inhibitors also prevent the MAO enzyme to break down certain amines. These amines are of no danger if
gradually broken down by MAO, but if they are not broken down, they will accumulate and may reach a harmful level. An ex ample is the substance tyramine; this substance is normally broken down with little or no toxic effects. However when MAO
inhibitors are present a ‘harmless’ substance, like tyramine, accumulates and becomes dangerous, causing headaches, a stiff
neck, cardiovascular difficulties and in an extreme case, even death.
Another effect that MAO inhibitors may produce, is prolonging and intensifying the effects of certain substances (drugs etc.),
because these substances are broken down much slower also. In other words, the MAO inhibitor will increase or alter the psycho
activity of these drugs. - It would be extremely foolish and dangerous to start experimenting with combinations of MAO inhibitors
and other prescription or non-prescription drugs, for the effects vary extremely! Next to the commercially used or prescription MAO inhibitors like procaine or Prozac, and most antidepressants, MAO inhibitors
include MDMA, various tryptamines, and particularly, various harmala alkaloids and possibly yohimbe. These MAO inhibitors can
be very potent and their action persists anywhere from thirty minutes to several hours. The effects of the commercially
(prescription) used MAO inhibitors lasted anywhere from several days to several weeks. The first group is referred to as short
term MAO inhibitors and the second one as long term MAO inhibitors; this depends on the duration of their action. (Short is 30
minutes to several hours and long are a few days).
What are the contraindications of MAO inhibitors:
When using MAO inhibitors, one should avoid an excessive intake of certain amino acids and the monamine precursors tyrosine,
pheylalanine and tryptophan.
-Tyrosine stimulates the production of noradrenaline, which, in combination with the raised level of noradrenaline caused by MAOinhibitors, may cause a dangerous blood pressure rise or drop, or one of the other effects mentioned above.
-Phenylalanine could cause extremely high levels of certain monamines, which leads to dangerously high blood pressure.
Phenylalanine is present, in relatively large amounts, in foods like: meat, milk, cheese and some other high protein foods.
-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the body makes from the digestion of proteins and that the brain uses to make
serotonin, is also very dangerous in combination with MAO inhibitors: the two substances intensify and alter each other’s actions
in unpredictable and potentially dangerous ways.
Foods that contain tyramine, can be very dangerous when used in combination with MAO inhibitors, in certain cases the
combination even is potentially lethal. First of all tyramin is usually broken down by the MAO enzyme, but when this enzyme is
inhibited, the level of tyramine will become dangerously high. Second of all, since both tyramine and MAO inhibitors produce a
raised level of (nor) adrenaline, the combination could raise the adrenaline activity tremendously, resulting in a sharp rise of blood

pressure. Examples of foods and drinks containing tyramine are: alcoholic beverages and particularly wine, aged cheeses,
chocolate (cacao), beef and chicken livers.
MAO inhibitors should not be combined with certain psychoactive substances, for they can prolong, intensify and/or alter the
effects of these substances in rather unpredictable manner that can be potentially dangerous (for example they can cause
dangerous blood pressure drops/rises). Examples of these substances are: antidepressants, CNS depressants, narcotic
analgesics and antihistamines.
MAO inhibitors should also never be combined with other MAO inhibitors, for they may intensify each other’s effect, only the level
of intensification is very unpredictable and potentially lethal due to sharp blood pressure raises or drops.
