Avoid handling the crown as it will damage and misshape it, instead handle your hat by the brim. Hatband: The hatband is the ribbon around the “waist”. Hatbands can be easily removed and replaced. Brim: The brim is the “skirt” of the hat / bottom half of the hat. It can come in a wide range of widths as well as shapes (ie: flat, turned up, turned down). WRONG WAY CORRECT WAY NOTE: Don’t rest your hat on its brim as it is impressionable. Rest your hat upside down on a flat, clean surface to take pressure off the brim. Sweatband: The sweatband is the ribbon or leather band around the interior of the hat (where the crown and brim meet). It allows you to sweat in the hat without damaging the material. HAT STYLES : WOMEN Invented in the early 1900’s and were wildly popular during the 1920’s. Typically Cloches are worn low on the forehead to slightly reveal the wearer’s eyes. Cloches can be made from felt to straw to even lace for more formal events. This style looks great on all faces A wide brim is super feminine and looks great on all faces; the brim width is crucial! Make sure to try different widths to find the perfect one. Trick of the trade: wear your wide brim at an angle for some feminine mysteriousness. More recently women have been donning this style. Perfect for women with square or round faces HAT STYLES : MEN Fedoras became popular in the 1800’s, as a way to depict upper-class, still wildly popular today as they look handsome on most faces. Typically fedoras have a crease in the crown and pinch at the front. The brims vary in width. Perfect for most faces (long, short, square or round) The porkipie is shorter in the crown than a fedora (and has a flat top) which makes it perfect for most men with a long face or someone who’s tall. Typically a porkpie brim is short and turned up slightly at the edge. Supposedly the pork pie got its name due its small resemblance to a culinary dish -> pork pie. Perfect for tall men, long or square faces Also know as the “Derby”, the bowler became the hat of choice at the turn of the century, replacing formal top hats. Both Derby and Bowler mean the same thing, a rounded stiff crown that’s smooth with an upright brim. Perfect for men with square, long or round faces A combination of the Fedora and the Tribly, the Stingy typically has a pinched and creased crown with a short “stingy” brim (most often turned up). Perfect for square, small or round faces MEASURING YOUR HEADSIZE To look good in a hat, it must fit properly. 3 ways to measure your head: You’ll need 1 of the following a cloth soft tape measure OR a piece of string and a ruler. 1. THE SUGGESTED METHOD: The most accurate way to measure your headsize is with a partner. Have your partner place the soft tape around your forehead just above your ears (where you’d like your hat to sit). 2. MEASURING ALONE: Sit on a chair facing a mirror. Using a soft tape starting at the middle of your forehead measure the circumference of your head, slightly above the ears (where you want your hat to sit). 3. THE LAST RESORT: BY YOURSELF WITHOUT A SOFT TAPE You can get an accurate measurement alone. Using twine (a non-elastic string) sit on a chair facing a mirror. Starting at the middle of your forehead (just above your ears) wrap the sting around your forehead MAKE SURE TO MARK where the string ends. Then measure the string length against a ruler.
