. Savannah News-Press • Sunday, December 9,1990 - 50 John Burke Get Win At Home J*"i Weather and tide conditions in the past week .have brought salt waJer fishing action almost to a bait. KoweveTT a tew TVery few) who braved the elements this past Friday found some trout activity in the rivers and creeks near the barrier islarids and edges of the sound*. While the water temperatures are dropping grees), there is little indication that trout are moving into the more inland rivers and creeks. A few small trout have been caught in these areas by anglers -trolling, hut most have been returned to the water because they did not reach the minimum size length of 12 inches. If weather conditions are favorable, the action should pick up again this week, and with the recent cold nights, there should be some noticeable movement of the trout into the river and creek systems. For those who like to fish offshore, weather again has kept activity to a minimum, but there are indications that king mackerel are still in the area in concentrated numbers. Excellent catches of kings hay_e~. been rejjorted in recent weeks by totfTFisherman's Lodge and Kip's Fishing Camp, located at Shellman bluff. Anglers fishing out of these locations have been fishing offshore of Sapelo Island. In many cases the boats fishing those areas have returned to the docks with full creel limits. For the inshore anglers, live shrimp are still available at the majority of fishing camps. However, anglers should check with their sources in advance of a trip to make sure that shrimp are still available. Tide conditions throughout the coming week should produce clear water along the entire coastal area. On Sunday, Dec. 15, tides will move into the mid seven-foot range and continue through Tuesday at this level. Unless pushed higher by northeast or easterly winds, they shouldn't be a problem for either bait fishing or trolling. Look for the trolling activity to pick up significantly in the next few days, and particularly during the days following the series of sevenfoot tides. Water temperatures are continuing to drop and this should move the trout into the deeper channels of the rivers and creeks. On the fresh water scene, crappie and bass fishing in the ponds and impoundments slowed this past week, but good catches of both were reported during the days prior to the full moon. Like the salt water picture, with favorable weather conditions the action in the ponds and impoundments should improve this coming week. No reports have been received as to the striper activity on the Ogeechee River or elsewhere. We will check with the Department of Natural Resources this coming week for. an update on the striper situation for both all the Georgia river systems. Most of the fresh water action took place with anglers using live minnows for bait. Golf Notebook the Knicks under John MacLeod, who replaced the fired Stew. Jackson as coach last Monday.
