April 2014 HIGHLAND CHRISTIAN SCHOOL “Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge Him. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that cover the earth.” Hosea 6:3 How to Be: ....Becoming who He wants us to BE from the cover Let Us Acknowledge God Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” How are God’s plans being seen here (at HCS)? How is that sense of hope felt? How are we prospering in this [new] school year? We are past the half-way point now and we can look back and make note of what God has done for us at HCS. Hosea 6:3 says “Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge Him. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” We acknowledge God’s faithful providence. We recognize His foresight, care and the guidance He provides each member of our school community. We recognize how He leads us in thought and action as we prepare for each student daily. We are confident in His help as we secure and align the resources we need to best fulfill our calling. How wonderful it is to know that He will come to our aid as we seek Him. We acknowledge God’s faithful provision. He has provided HCS with teachers who care, students who are curious, and parents who support. He has provided us with opportunities to teach our children to think beyond themselves and reach out to the wider community in need. He has provided some of our families with much needed financial support to make the dream of Christian education for their children a reality. We acknowledge God’s faithful presence. He is present in the day to day details of our school—the conversations and interactions. He is present in the times of devotion, prayer, and worship. He is present in the lessons, activities, and recess games. He is present in the concerts, science fair, and assemblies— in the times of celebration and the times of challenge. We acknowledge our faithful, loving God for all that He has done, is doing, and will do in and through our Highland Christian School community. Karin Vredeveld Interim Principal, 2013-2014 students in action Greetings from Sonshine Enrichment Center, where we are eagerly awaiting warmer, spring weather!! In January, our students enjoyed a learning excursion to Bellaboo’s. We learned about solids, liquids, and gases by using our senses. We used a solid ice cube to draw a picture on construction paper, discussing the changes from solid to liquid and a little later, to gas. We were amazed to find our pictures had disappeared when we returned to them later. In Bellaboo’s kitchen, we made and enjoyed hot chocolate. Then it was on to the water room, ball pit/climber, and art area to make a snowman by tearing pieces of paper and decorating with natural materials. We loved our visit and all agreed we wished we had more time at Bellaboo’s! Sonshine Enrichment Center In February, we invited our Moms for a Valentine’s Day celebration. We sang songs for them, enjoyed a snack, and measured out a Curly Soup recipe into a container for supper at home one night. We are sharing some of our fun picture poses for you to enjoy. We are excited to have received some new learning resources for our classes, thanks to the generosity of friends of SEC. We were able to purchase safety goggles and magnetic wands for our science areas. A t-Ball set was purchased and boy, have we had fun with that! New sand toys and sand mills have arrived to enjoy in our outdoor sandbox when the weather finally breaks! We anxiously await the arrival of a basketball goal set to practice bouncing & catching balls, as well as our dribbling and shooting skills. We are praying for warmer weather so we can enjoy this new equipment outdoors! April 2014 schoolbell 3 students in action Michael Recycle! Mrs. Kicho from South Shore Arts came to our school to do the workshop “Michael Recycle” with our third graders. The workshop teaches the students about using recycled materials to make projects. Third Graders Go for the Gold with Olympic Activities When an event occurs once every four years and you are only eight or nine years old yourself, it seems pretty special. The third graders had an exciting time exploring the Olympic festivities recently celebrated in Sochi, Russia. We started by researching the various winter sporting events, and using the facts we found to decorate a cut-out of a Russian nesting doll. This helped us learn about some very unique athletic events (curling anyone?) and give a nod to the traditions of the host nation. Accelerated Reading (AR) Program The Accelerated Reading (AR) program at Highland Christian School is used to promote a stronger ability and love of reading. For each book read, students in grades 3 through 8 will complete a test and gain some points. Each point the student accumulates is worth money in the AR store, where they can “shop” at the end of every quarter. They can buy treats from Wendy’s, crafts, candy, drinks, special lunch or other small items. Each year the students are also encouraged to tithe some of their points (bringing their “first fruits” back to God) for a charity chosen by the staff. This year’s charity is mosquito netting for people in Uganda. It is done through the organization Nets for Africa which provides the mosquito netting for people to protect them from the diseases spread by insect bites. 4 schoolbell April 2014 We also pretended to be sports reporters interviewing various American athletes. We watched short videos of a figure skater, an alpine skier, and two bi-athletes. After consulting our notes about what they said regarding the Olympic experience, we wrote news articles detailing each athlete’s personal Sochi story. Who doesn’t love a fuzzy mascot? We were introduced to the three official Sochi mascots – Snow Leopard, Polar Bear, and Hare. It was very interesting to watch the Russian cartoons with subtitles animating their stories. The third graders then wrote essays comparing and contrasting the mascots. We liked them all, but Hare proved to be the most popular, with twelve students choosing to write about her. Every morning in third grade, we pray that God will help us recognize our own talents. How wonderful that we could also recognize the incredible gifts God has given others. The winter Olympics may be over, but the spirit of striving for the best will continue on at Highland Christian School. students in action ISSMA The annual ISSMA (Indiana State School Music Association) sponsored events were held on February 1 at Munster High School for piano and vocal events, and on February 8 at Crown Point High School for instrumental events. HCS was well-represented, with all students earning a medal for their performances. The students were graded on their own performance and not in competition with other students. In piano, Simon Molenaar, Kayla Sylvester, Madeline Zandstra, Olivia Yonkman and Erin Yonkman received gold medals. In vocals, Hannah Last, Tori Ruffolo, Macy Margherio and Anna Lenting received gold medals, with Savannah Morgan receiving a silver medal. In instrumental events, Tyland Armour, Matthew Groot, Emily Feikema, Jeffrey Kroll, Hannah Last, Sarah Mapes, Simon Molenaar, Cate Peerbolte, Josh Sylvester, Kayla Sylvester, Sophia Thompson, Sam Vargo and Erin Yonkman all received gold medals, with Annie Kielpikowski receiving silver. The quartet consisting of Olivia De Young, Kaylee Evers, Kayla Sylvester and Madeline Zandstra all earned gold medals. This was an opportunity for our students to grow musically because their skills were evaluated and praised, and they develop the personal skill of being able to perform in front of a small audience. To further experience the music, HCS hosted a Recital Night for ISSMA students to perform for a small group of friends and family. It was a wonderful evening of music as the students displayed the musical talents given to them by their heavenly Father. Christmas Concert Speaking as a parent, the Christmas concert was a treat. It was fun to listen to the Junior High Band play their pieces so well and to be able to have different sections of the band featured. It really let the talents of the individual students shine. The band played London Bridge, Little Star and Jingle Bells an annual favorite. It is amazing to hear how far this band has come since band camp last summer! The Junior High Choir also entertained us with traditional songs. They opened their selections by walking from the bleachers to the stage with The African Christmas Song. The drum, played by Cate Peerbolte, really highlighted the tone and feeling of the song. The choir also sang God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, which was combined with Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite – an interesting spin on a traditional favorite. The final song was one that the weather must have been listening to - Let It Snow. The concert concluded with the Junior High Band, which opened their performance with a medley of songs in the form of a march. The band then exhorted us to Go Tell It On the Mountain and then prayed for us through their song, Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace). Their final song was a greeting for us and each other, We Wish You a Merry Christmas. This was a delightful evening and a time to celebrate our Lord’s birth through music. By Mrs. Judy Zandstra April 2014 schoolbell 5 students in action P.E.T. The students at Highland Christian participated in a very exciting and rewarding project for Christmas. We collected money for an agency in DeMotte, Indiana that builds a handcranked wheelchair called a PET (Personal Energy Transportation). This wheelchair provides mobility for God’s people in need, including those who have been affected by polio, landmines, birth defects or amputations. The PETs are sent around the world to over 100 countries. Because of the generous support of our students and parents, we were able to raise $3,947.83. That was enough money to purchase 15 PETs for 15 special people God has chosen to receive this precious gift of mobility! Many of our students worked to make extra money to contribute and a lot of children emptied their piggy banks to help this cause. Thank you to everyone, because every little amount combined with others, can turn into a great amount to be used by God for his Kingdom. God loves a cheerful giver! Student Council Helps Clean Out Closets 6 schoolbell April 2014 The junior high student council sponsored a clothing drive for etc... a resale marketplace when they discovered that the stock was dwindling at the resale store. Promoting the drive as a contest between the classes proved to be both successful and fun. Jeff Kroll and Rachel Wilcox braved the elements every morning to help unload bags from cars in the drop-off line. Other council members labeled and weighed each donation. By the end of the week, over 1500 pounds of clothing had been collected! Mrs. Huizenga’s fifth grade class tipped the scale at 368 pounds, but many other classes were “clothes” behind. Still have closets to clean out? Don’t worry--donations can always be left in the etc trailer at Highland Christian. students in action Spring is Officially Here!! Thursday, March 20 at 11:57 am, the Spring Equinox occurred. The Vernal Equinox is when the sun crosses the equator going south to north. An equinox occurs twice a year, when the plane of earth's equator passes the center of the sun. At this time, the tilt of the earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun. The night and day are about equal length. The 6th grade science class was in session at the time of the equinox. There is an experiment in which you can stand raw eggs on end on the first day of spring. This is derived from the notion that, due to the sun's equidistant position between the poles of the earth at the time of the equinox, special gravitational forces apply. The 6th grade class was given 12 eggs. At exactly 11:57 am four eggs stood up on end quickly. We could not get any of the other ones to stand. Three hour later, they were still standing!!! Best Wishes Mrs. Timmer Highland Christian School bids a fond farewell to Mrs. Sara Timmer. Last year, her husband, who is employed by Hilti, Inc. was transferred to a new job site in Fort Wayne ,IN. He has been commuting for over a year while their younger daughter finished her senior year at Illiana and their son finished his last year at Lake Central. With these two graduations pending, their family is looking forward to a calmer routine! Mrs. Timmer hopes to find a teaching job in Fort Wayne sometime after they sell their home in St. John and complete the move. Mrs. Timmer was acknowledged by The Calumet Regional Science Fair & Art Associated Art Exhibit for “Inspiring Students at Highland Christian School and For Motivating students at the 2014 Science Fair At Indiana University Northwest.” Thank you Mrs. Timmer for your service at Highland Christian School. We appreciate the way you invested yourself in our students and raised the bar in our Science program. We wish you and your family well as you plan for relocation this summer. Science Fair On February 7, we had our annual Science Fair. Students from grades 5 and 7 had spent weeks experimenting and proving or disproving their hypotheses. On that Friday, men and women from the community came to HCS to judge each experiment and give it a grade. These judges were welcomed with coffee and donuts by Mrs. Timmer and Mrs. Huizenga and given the forms for judging. The students were called from their classes to present their findings to the judges and were given a grade. The judges enjoyed interacting with the students and they learned a thing or two from the experiments, such as which laundry detergent works best for stains, what color will help a plant grow best, which microwave popcorn will give you the most pop for your buck, and are adults smarter than a seventh grader (the experiment proves that they are!). After all the judging was complete and the awards handed out, four experiments stood out as Best in Show: Hannah Last (Are you Smarter than a Seventh Grader?), Cate Peerbolte (Which Wax Works? – testing ski wax), Isabella Verastegui (Can Plants be an Alternative Power Source?) and Josiah Wildman (Growing Plants – Which Light Works Best?). Friday evening, students and their families were invited to come and check out all of the experiments and enjoy refreshments. It was fun to see the variety of experiments and how the students’ different interests were highlighted. April 2014 schoolbell 7 students in action Hcs at the National Geography Bee Do you know which Canadian province produces more than half of the country’s manufactured goods? How about this: to visit the ruins of Persepolis, an ancient ceremonial capital of Persia, you would have to travel to what present-day country? Highland Christian School congratulates 8th grade student, Andrew Feikema, on advancing to the National Geography Bee finals in Indianapolis. He will travel to IUPUI (Indiana University - Purdue University, Indianapolis) on April 4 to compete with all the finalists from Indiana. Spelling Bee Buzz In December, all junior high students participated in a spelling bee. Kayla Sylvester, Cade Yonkman, Annie Kielpikowski, Erin Yonkman, Lilly Armendariz, Collin Bultema, and Ryan Rudenga were the class finalists. Erin Yonkman emerged as the school winner and represented Highland Christian School at the Lake/Porter district competition. She finished in the top ten and continued to the regional level where she finished in fourth place. Thank you, Erin, for doing an amazing job representing HCS! Math Triathlon On Friday, November 22, 16 third through sixth graders competed in Trinity Christian College’s Annual Math Triathlon. This year, the event was hosted at Calvin Christian School. There were four events. The day started with an individual competition, where students worked on a test on their own. They were placed in small groups of students from different grades, but of the same school. After lunch, students learned how to make an origami candy box. The final event was a relay race, where a student did a quick problem and ran to the back of the line. Ten area schools competed in the Triathlon and HCS took 6th place overall. The day finished with a big awards ceremony. The students who had the highest individual scores from their school’s grade level were awarded medals. Awards were then given for each competition and students were able to take a group picture with Trinity’s mascot, the Troll. HCS students attending this year were Audrey Yonkman, Loralee De Young*, Morgan Rudenga, Annie Kielpikowski*, Nico Sytsma, Olivia Oostema, Simon Molenaar*, Anna Lenting, Drew Witvoet*, Emma De Boer, Olivia Yonkman, Eddie Spoelman*, Addison Bandstra, Max Meter, Jack Burbage, and Olivia De Young. April 2014 schoolbell 9 sports 6th Grade Boys’ Basketball The 6th grade boys’ basketball team had a fun and successful season. The team consisted of Eddie Spoelman, Josh Matiscik, James Klapak, Dante Sullivan, Javon Rogers, Everette Fitzgerald, Edward Prentice, Lance Mulderink, Riley Woodward, Marco Amatulli, Cade Yonkman and Aaron Lewis. This team was very balanced and played well together. The Huskies won nine games and lost two games. They finished second in the tournament, after losing a close game to DeMotte. Our team verse was Philippians 2:3-4, which the students memorized. We are thankful we had the opportunity to coach this group of talented and godly young men. Coaches Neil Krooswyk and Tim Wiltjer 6th Grade Girls’ Basketball The 6th grade girls’ basketball team learned a lot this year. The team had little basketball experience prior to this season and it was impressive to see how quickly they learned to work together. The team of eight girls consisted of Lexi Terpstra, Anna Delahunty, Audrey Zoeteman, Annie Kielpikowski, Yalissa Rubio, Kaylee Evers, Drew Hunt and Lauren Woo. The girls won six games and lost six games. They also lost a game and won a game in the tournament, earning third place. We are very proud of how much the girls learned and improved this season. Their hard work established in sixth grade will help them next year at Highland Christian. Coaches Neil Krooswyk and Tim Wiltjer 7th Grade Girls’ Basketball The 7th grade girls’ basketball team had a good season this year. The girls worked hard and showed a lot of improvement by the end of the season. Their record was 5-9 and they ended the year with a 2nd place finish in the DeMotte Tournament. Another highlight was winning 1st place in the team free throw competition at the DeMotte Tournament- great work girls! Team members were: Lilly Armendariz, Heidi Bultema, Katie Dykstra, Emma Groot, Marissa Lopez, Julia Oostema, Cate Peerbolte and Aslynn Riemersma. The team was coached by Larissa VanderPol and Sara Timmer. 7th Grade Boys’ Basketball The 7th grade boys’ basketball team had a great season. The boys worked hard each day in practice to improve their skills and to learn to play better as team. Their hard work paid off as they only lost one game all season, with that lone loss coming to a very good Tinley Park team. The boys took 1st place in the DeMotte Tournament, defeating Crown Point in the championship game. They also took home the team free throw championship and Isaac Sytsma was the individual free throw champion. Well done boys - we look forward to seeing what you will do as 8th graders next season! Team members were: Taran Jeffery, Ronald Bass, Josh Otte, Chris Koutz, Isaac Sytsma, Isaiah King, Josh Parodi, Riley Schutt and Kyle Mulderink. 10 schoolbell April 2014 Coach Zac Hiskes sports 8th Grade Boys’ Basketball 8th Grade Girls’ Basketball The 2013/2014 eighth grade basketball season was a very satisfying one in which the boys experienced great challenges, hard work, defeat and victory. After losing some players from last year’s team and experiencing some injuries, the boys knew they had to work extra hard in practice to develop and improve their skills. The boys responded to this adversity in a remarkable way by winning four of their last five games, after losing their first six. Their first tournament game pitted the Huskies against an eventual tournament finalist, Southwest Oak Lawn. The Huskies played extremely hard but came up just short, losing 43 - 45 in one of their best games against one of the top teams in the league. I was very proud of the way the boys competed, worked and exhibited Christian character throughout this satisfying season. Having the opportunity to spend this time with them, I can see great accomplishments and successes for each of these young men, as they continue to grow in stature and spirit. I would like to give a special thank you to Nathan Zuidema, my son, for his diligent work in assistant coaching this fine group of young men. This year’s team members were: Collin Bultema, Raijai King, Kyle Mulderink, Jashawn Rogers, Ryan Rudenga, Maurice Sullivan, Isaac Sytsma, Tylor Torres and Kyle Zuidema. The eighth grade girls’ basketball team had a successful season. Despite the fact that the season was not filled with as many wins as the girls would have liked, it was still a huge success in terms of how much the girls improved, how hard they competed, how close they became as a team and how much fun they had. The girls’ work ethic in practice was outstanding and their energy and enthusiasm made each game and practice a blast! I am so proud of these girls for the way they hung tough all season and constantly tried to improve, despite some difficult circumstances. Our lone win came in a great game against a good Crown Point Christian team. The game was back and forth the entire way, and Crown Point had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but the Huskies prevailed, 18-15. Sarah Kuiper took 2nd place in the three point shooting contest at the Illiana Tournament. Way to go girls! Team members were: Tori Terpstra, Rachel Wilcox, Nascha Hladek, Emily Montalvo, Lauren Amatulli, Cassie Laninga and Sarah Kuiper. By Coach Derek Van Dyke By Coach Don Zuidema Cheerleading The Huskie Cheerleaders had a wonderful season! We had nine new faces cheering on the eighth grade girls’ and boys’ basketball teams this year. The cheerleaders spent a lot of time learning sideline chants and a few floor cheers. Their eagerness to learn had them excelling early in the season. This team had a lot of fun together and loved the excitement of really close games. This year’s team was made up of three seventh graders: Jessica Bell, Hannah Last, and Macy Margherio, as well as six sixth graders: Erica Gillespie, Clarissa Koutz, Anna Lenting, Savannah Morgan, Te’nia Phillips, and Madeline Zandstra. April 2014 schoolbell 13 friends in action etc... & DIY A Perfect Pair When etc... a resale marketplace first began, my mom became involved and not long after that I did as well, spending some of my college summers volunteering in the back room sorting clothes and helping my mom do displays. What we quickly learned was how many awesome finds came through that back door. Over time, etc... has truly become more than just a thrift store, it’s a “household brand” in our home. I think there is something from etc... in every room. We took it to a whole new level this year. When I moved to an apartment in Chicago, I almost furnished the entire place with thrift store pieces. No, I was not able to find everything in perfect condition, but this is where the DIY part comes into play. As many of you know, things like Pinterest and DIY (Do It Yourself) blogs have been a rising fad over the last few years. This is where some of you may also be scared off and say, “nope not for me”... but I’d like you to hold it right there. Yes, they call me the “crafty” one in my family, but that doesn’t mean I’m skilled in DIY projects. What I do have is an interest in making something old look new, however big or small the project is, and that is the key. etc... just so happens to be a fundamental source for my project supplies. There are lots of thrift stores out there and garage sales to shop around, but our very own thrift store is where I was able to find all my favorites pieces that have now been revamped and fit right into my home. Some might take on a project or two for the summer, but I decided to dive right in and take on a couple more. In total, my apartment is now furnished with 10+ pieces, including: kitchen table and chairs, love seat and chair, dining room table and chairs, nightstand, coffee table, end tables, and a Christmas tree - ALL FROM etc...! Some of the pieces were good as is, but many were quite ugly and weathered, so I began planning my DIY projects. I must say ,some were a bigger undertaking than others, but whether big or small, it was fun to see the before and after. I refinished an antique nightstand in a fun and bold color with freshly painted hardware. I paired three odd dining chairs with an old solid oak pedestal table for my kitchen. These were transformed with some fresh paint, a new coat of stain and modern fabric for the seat cushions. And finally, I took on a large beat-up dining table that I matched with an assortment of dining chairs. With some fresh paint, stain, and seat cushions, they’re now a complete set. All those projects + an awesome loveseat and end table find = home. Lesson of the day: If you’re crafty like me you should be shopping at etc.... If you’re not crafty and just like good deals and great finds you should be shopping at etc... too. And last but not least, if you love Highland Christian School and its students, you should be shopping at etc...! DIY (Do It Yourself) decorating is a passion of mine, and so is etc... (Educating The Children), and for both reasons I will continue to shop at etc... a resale marketplace By Jaclyn Boomsma 14 schoolbell April 2014 friends in action The Privilege of Partnership at Highland Christian “A love and appreciation has grown in my heart over time. With my last child graduating with the Class of 2014, the intuitive value I placed on Christian education in the beginning has now borne it’s fruit. The fruit I already see compels me to be a LEGACY PARTNER with Highland Christian School. I do not have much wealth, but what I have I will invest in this work of education and discipleship. Having grown up in the church and having a confident relationship with Jesus Christ, I wanted the same for my children. I am so thankful for the teachers and staff who, day in and day out, model what it means to “Walk with Jesus”... what it means to “Bring thoughts captive to God’s truth”... how to apply biblical principles to life experiences... how to trust with confidence because of who God is. It is such a blessing to learn to ACKNOWLEDGE GOD when you are young! When we learn to acknowledge God, His promise in Hosea 6:3 becomes a profound comfort. This is a comfort that I want every child to know and experience. This is a call that I am passionate about. I will BE part of this call!” -- simply signed, a grateful parent Soup Supper Success P.T.O. + Y.O.U. = New Classroom Technology Thank you for sharing a simple supper with us and showing your support of our GREAT school!
