Trends 2014
2013 has been a revolutionary year in programming. It changed audience
perceptions about what factual programming is and enabled international
broadcasters to raise their brand equity and audience numbers significantly.
Borders between fact, fiction and entertainment continue to blur. Sky Arts is one
example of how culture has been revived. Global viewers have seen the arrival of
a new generation of factual-inspired scripted television series, including US
success stories as diverse as History Channel’s Hatfields & McCoys, Mark
Burnett’s The Bible and Ridley Scott’s Killing Lincoln.
Alternative platforms allow producers to forego the idea of getting their series on
TV straight away, while growing an audience organically. On offer to content
creators are truly new distribution models, as shown by VOD services such as
Hulu and Netflix recently investing in factual and documentary programmes.
Consider the impact of the talent battle in celebrity-led edutainment, where high
concept versus populist is most prominently represented by such UK legends as
Sir David Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Brian Cox and Michael Palin.
