Learn How to Knit
(It’s fun, relaxing, meditative, and not hard!)

Children’s Beginner
Knitting Class
Saturdays, May 8, May 15, and
June 5
from 10:00am-12 noon
Knitting is a wonderful relaxing activity that allows you to produce something tangible and also is a wonderful
learning tool. You improve dexterity,
utilize math and design skills, develop
spatial recognition and develop familiarity with fibers. Children learn the
basics of how to Cast On, Knit and Purl and
other essential knitting information.
Includes comprehensive written instruction material. Must be at least 8 years old
to attend. Yarn will be supplied free of charge. Cost: $5/class
($15) + $3.50 materials cost for wooden knitting needles.
Adult Beginner Class
Saturdays, May 8, May 15, and June 5
from 12:30-2:30 pm
You can make fun scarves and other items easily. Learn
the basics of how to Cast on, Knit and Purl and other essential
knitting information. Includes comprehensive written instruction material. Bring a Size 8 wooden needle, approximately
9" to 12" length & worsted weight yarn. Cost: $10/class ($30
total) for Lower Moreland residents and Friends of HVL;
$15/class ($45 total) for non-residents.
Adult Advanced Class
Saturdays, May 8, May 15, and June 5
from 3:00-5:00 pm
In this class you will learn how to correct mistakes, how
and when to use different methods to increase and decrease,
how to make a yarn over, how to make I-cord, how to make
buttonholes and how to pick up stitches and other essential
knitting information. Includes comprehensive written instruction material. Come to class with a 3 inch sample swatch in
stockinette stitch. (Cast on approx. 20 sts) and a project in
mind. Cost $10/class ($30 total) for Lower Moreland residents
and Friends of HVL; $15/class ($45 total) for non-residents.
The Presidents’ Wives:
Martha, Abigail, and Louisa
Be our guest when Huntingdon Valley’s own treasure,
Harriet Anderson, dishes the dirt about the lives of Martha
Washington, Abigail Adams, and Louisa Adams (Mrs. John
Quincy Adams). Not only will you learn about these remarkable women, but you will be delighted and enchanted by the
vivacious 96 years young Harriet Anderson. This program will
be held on Tuesday, April 20 at 7pm in the 2nd Floor
Community Room. Light refreshments will be provided. This
event is jointly sponsored by the Friends of HV Library and the
HV Junior Women’s Club
Shorts in the Springtime:
A Series of Short Story Readings in the Library
Readings will be held from 7-9pm in the library.
Please Note: Due to some of the language and topics covered
in the series, this program is most appropriate for attendance
by adults and high school students.

55 Alive at Huntingdon Valley Library
The library is offering another opportunity to attend the
AARP 55 Alive Driver Safety Program classes. A 2-day course
will be on Wed., June 9 and Fri., June 11 from 10am-3pm. The
fee is $10 per person, with checks made payable to AARP.
Automobile insurance discounts starting at 5% are available
to those who complete the course. Space is limited. Call to put
your name on the list; receipt of your check (no cash, please)
acts as confirmation that you are registered.

Summer Reading 2004
Libraries in 22 States are joined in a collaborative Reading Program to honor the
discoveries of Lewis and Clark. Join us here in Pennsylvania and…………….
SIGN UP TO “DISCOVER NEW TRAILS @ YOUR LIBRARY!”
REGISTRATION BEGINS JUNE 18th!
Sign up, start reading and get ready for the first “Tuesday Nites at the Library.”
Any child who patronizes the Huntingdon Valley Library is eligible to read and enter books into his or her
reading record at any time he or she visits the library over the Summer. Preschoolers who are able to read may
also participate. Reading records will be kept at the front of the library on a table assigned for that purpose.
There is a separate “Read-to-Me” designation for children who participate by having parents or caregivers read to them over the
Summer. Please add “Read-to-Me” in the section that asks for the child’s school.
To be eligible for a Reading Award at the end of the Summer, each child must have read at least 10 books. That’s an average
of about just one book a week! Prizes will be awarded in each grade category to the boys and girls who read the most at their level.
There will be one storyhour a week for preschoolers. Thursdays at 11:00 A.M.
“Science in the Summer” –sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline—will take place the week of July 12 in the A.M. There will be two
groups…drawn from a lottery…15 children who have graduated grades 1 and 2, and the second 15 children who have finished
grades 3,4, and 5. Sign up begins on June 18th. Children will be notified on July 2nd. All selected children MUST BE AVAILABLE
for the four days of the course.
There will be two groups of “Literary Desserts” for a limited number of boys and girls who have finished 4th or 5th grades and
6th and 7th. Sign up begins June 18th when the first book should be picked up. “Desserts” begin Wednesday, July 7th.
“Tuesday Nites at the Library” 7:30 P.M. in the library’s Community Room on the second floor. Programs are open to all participating children and families. There will be babysitting available in the upstairs hall for children too young to be attentive to the
programs. Parents are asked to leave babies and toddlers at home with a grandparent or sitter. Your cooperation is requested.
Programs are geared for grades K-6
Once again this year the Friends of the Library sponsor all Summer programming. They are looking for “a few good men and
women” to join them in helping the library provide quality service for all patrons of the library…big and small. Please consider joining.

HVL Teen News
During the winter, 7th, 8th, and 9th graders have enjoyed programs on the second and fourth
Thursday of each month. They will continue to get together from 7-9pm on these Thursdays during the
spring. Some of our activities have included game nights, movie nights, and an evening of poetry and
prose reading. In addition, teens had several “read-a-loud” sessions with children between the ages of 3
and 7. Starting in June, this “read-a-loud” program will take place on the first Thursday of each month.
Teens can earn service hours for their participation in this program. Spring movie choices and planned
games for upcoming Thursdays are posted at the library as well as on our web site, www.hvlibrary.org.

Web Workshop Series

During this series of courses, learn how to customize your web browser, find information more
efficiently, organize bookmarks and favorites, connect to email from a browser, copy information to
a word processor, use and print PDF files, download photos, deal with security information, find useful
web sites, and find fun web sites. Come with questions that you need answered. Instructor Paula Rothman
is Technology Coordinator at Perelman Jewish Day School. She has been working with personal computers
since 1981, has been involved with online telecommunications since 1987, and started using the Internet in
1991. Cost for attending this 6-session course: $5/session ($30 total) for Lower Moreland residents and Friends of
