Instructor: Cathy Steinberg More than ever, bloggers are using their platforms to create change and raise awareness. Online advocacy is on the rise, but when it comes to the unsexy, frightening, hard-to-face issues, there is no one more experienced at fighting for awareness, understanding, and education than Rae Lewis-Thornton. Since the day in 1986 when she was diagnosed with HIV, Rae Lewis-Thornton has been on a mission to drive awareness to and challenge the most common myths and stereotypes surrounding life with fullblown AIDS. She’s taken her story and message to the stage, to print, and now online where she is a digital crusader for those people today living with and dying from HIV, and for the one person every 10 minutes in the US who will be diagnosed with HIV. Interviewed by Jeannine Harvey of ONEmoms, Rae will shareher story, her message of hope, community, and education for one of the most-avoided health issues we face today. Powered by CoreApps, our mobile app will allow you to plan out your schedule during the conference, find more information on speakers and sponsors, connect with other attendees, update your social media channels, and take notes on your favorite sessions. Here’s a brief run-down of the various features: Maps We have both an interactive expo map to help you navigate your way through the expo hall, as well as an overall conference map. The conference map will show the locations of all the sessions, keynotes, and parties. Sponsors Learn more about our sponsors and follow them on Twitter. This application lists all of our sponsors who generously support our attendees and make this event possible. Attendees & Friends One of the best parts of any BlogHer event is meeting and networking with your fellow attendees. And our conference app helps you do just that with a handy contact swapping tool. Once you’ve downloaded the app, simply enter in your contact info under “My Profile.” You’ll see a toggle at the bottom where you can choose to list your profile on the Attendee List. To add yourself to the list, switch this to “ON.” Not publishing your profile to the Attendee List will not prevent you from contact swapping, but others will not be able to find you -- you’ll have to seek them out and add them to your friends list. When you open the Attendee List and click on someone’s profile, you’ll see two buttons to request them as a friend, and to add them to your contacts. Agenda & Your Schedule Search the events by day or track. You can find the sessions that most interest you and add them to your own custom schedule. You’ll also be able to takes notes right from the session description page and rate the session too — how handy is that? Photo Gallery We’ll all be snapping away photos of the food, the sessions, and the parties on our smartphones and cameras. Why not upload those photos to the Photo Gallery in the app? You can show people the images you’ve captured around Chicago, and see shots from your fellow attendees! Conference Info & Feeds We have lots of places within the app for you to access all the important event information and news. Our RSS feed is linked right from the dashboard, as well as the #BlogHer13 Twitter feed, where you can join the conversation without ever having to leave the app (just make sure you add your handle to your profile)! We also have an icon for Conference Materials, where you’ll find PDFs for important information. These are just a few of the many features available to you to make your experience a little easier, and more high-tech. And what’s more, you can sync the app to multiple devices, so your schedule and contacts will be there with you no matter which one you decide to use. To download the app go to http://m.core-apps. com/blogher13. If you are on an iPhone or Android, this link will take you to the app’s download page in the app store. If you are on a BlackBerry, Windows Phone, or other smart phone, you will be able to use the web version of the app at this URL. Since we have not yet mastered the art of cloning, you can visit the VirtualCon for all those sessions you missed and catch up. So don’t stress if you miss something or forget to take notes! We’ve got you covered. The Swag Exchange One of the most popular parts of BlogHer is all the cool swag you pick up. But let’s face it, not every product is right for every person. Since 2008, BlogHer has provided a place for attendees to recycle these items – the Swag Exchange! Open all day Saturday and on Sunday from 6AM-12PM, in Parlor C, lobby level of the Sheraton Chicago, here you can drop off any items you don’t need, and pick up any items you missed (or maybe just want an extra of). Anything left will be donated. Now that’s putting your swag to good use! The Shipping Suite Conveniently located in the same room as the Swag Exchange, the Shipping Suite is a place to help you pack up items you can’t fit in your suitcase and want to ship home. We’ll have boxes, tape, packing slips – all the materials you’ll need (but please note, fees associated with shipping packages will not covered). The Lactation Lounge A BlogHer Conference staple, the Lactation Lounge is back once again. Many attendees will bring their infants to the conference and this is a private room set aside, just for them. Located in room W194 on the 4th floor of McCormick Place, there will be comfortable seating. The Serenity Suite Once again we are bringing you a space to relax, unwind and take a little breather from the hub-bub of the conference. Maggie, Heather and a team of caring bloggers will be there to greet you in our Serenity Suite. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday and during parties if you want to take a break from the action! For more information, check out our announcement. The Serenity Suite at McCormick Place is located in room W192A and in suite 1237 at the Sheraton Chicago. The Recharge Lounge, brought to you by Folgers With so much going on at the conference, we know how important it is to have a place to relax and recharge (both yourself and your electronics). The Recharge Lounge, sponsored by Folgers, will be in the Expo Hall and will have comfortable seating areas for relaxation and networking, and plenty of recharging stations. And of course, coffee, to help you keep up with all the conference activities. Thursday, July 26th Although the conference doesn’t officially kick-off until the Evening at the Expo on Thursday evening, there are plenty of activities and parties happening on Thursday to welcome you to BlogHer. HealthMinder Day We know the BlogHer community is avidly interested The BlogHer '13 Conference Guide 40 T HE AGE N DA & B E YO N D in health and wellness. You are 39% more likely to give advice about health than the average woman online. 57% of you read health and wellness blogs for information, and you like to try new health-related products. That comes to life when we gather your feedback about our events. And with that feedback in mind, we’ve designed HealthMinder Day to be a day of inspiration, education, and connection. Specifically, it is a full, multi-track adjunct day happening Thursday, July 25th, before BlogHer ‘13. The day will focus on expert information and looking at the latest tools, services, sources, and products for taking care of yourself and your loved ones. And for sharing with your online communities. Learn more about HealthMinder Day here and register for your ticket here. Pathfinder Day Pathfinder Day was created to help answer an ongoing, consistent question that we, as bloggers, often face: Where do I go from here? We ask it when we’re just starting out. We can tell we love the blogosphere, but we aren’t always quite sure what our goals are. (In fact, we sometimes aren’t sure if we even need blogging goals.) And sometimes we ask it again when we’ve been at it two, three, four years. We come to a blogging crossroads. We experience blogger burnout. We see the landscape changing and wonder about our place in it. We wonder if we need a change, or if we need to re-focus. Pathfinder Day is all about helping you dig deep and explore one of four different potential blogging paths through fundamentals workshops, learning some real how-tos to progress down your chosen path, and discussions with two Pathfinders who have been down that path and want to share their stories, hear yours... and help you understand your next steps. Learn more and register here. Viewfinder Day We believe that the web is becoming a more visuallydriven platform. Video and photo content are not only huge traffic-drivers, they are key engagement tools for your online audience. Viewfinder Day seeks to step beyond our Photo and Video track at BlogHer ‘13 and dive deep into the interests, needs, and future of photography and video mediums in the digital space. View the complete day’s agenda, and register for Viewfinder Day here. Evening at the Expo Now a BlogHer tradition, Evening at the Expo gives you more time to hang in the Expo that is dedicated, not conflicting with any sessions or parties. A couple of break times a day isn’t enough. On Thursday night, from 6:00 – 9:00pm, you’ll have three hours of uninterrupted time to check out the latest and greatest from our sponsors... without whom, as you know, this conference and our low ticket prices would simply not be possible. You won’t want to miss this! Friday, July 26th The BlogHer 5K, brought to you by Best Buy Get your day started early with what has become a conference tradition: the 5K! Distance running is not only a great form of exercise, but also a wonderful practice at goal setting. And a 5K is a great way to get your blood pumping and your energy up before you jump into the conference. Best Buy will have FitBits for all our runners to help you track your progress toward your fitness goals, and they’ll also provide everyone with breakfast after. So join your fellow runners for a gorgeous morning run along Lake Michigan. The 5K will begin at the Parlor C at the Sheraton Chicago, lobby level, at 6:30am and we will welcome up to 300 bloggers! Click here for more information and to sign up. Newbie Breakfast We’ll be hosting a Newbie Breakfast on Friday The BlogHer '13 Conference Guide 41 T HE AGE N DA & B E YO N D morning at 7:30am at McCormick Place. You'll have the opportunity to meet the BlogHer mentors and mingle with fellow newbies. Hear from members of the BlogHer Events Team on a range of conference topics, such as programming, sponsors, parties and more, and get answers to all your burning BlogHer questions. Also, networking guru Sandy JonesKaminski will share networking tips to help you make the most of BlogHer '13. The 2013 International Activist Scholarship Panel Our fifth annual International Activist Blogger scholarship program highlights the work of women who are galvanizing social change and social justice across their communities and - by the very public and distributed nature of the Internet - across the world. For some of them, this work is not without risk, yet still they continue. Because raising their voices is not a luxury or a whim or an option. It is a necessity. We hope that every attendee can be inspired, right along with us, by the work of our impressive scholarship recipients. Perhaps their work can serve as a catalyst for each of us and our communities to activate around the issues closest to our hearts. Don’t miss this inspiring session on Saturday from 3:15pm – 4:00pm. Read more about these amazing women and the work they’re doing here. Saturday, JULY 27th The BlogHer ’13 Fashion Show Saturday night closes out the conference, and we are going to close it out in STYLE! Led by your friendly hosts with the most, Lindsay Ferrier, Lena Lotsey and Yvonne Valtierra. The BlogHer '13 Conference Guide 43 Q&A a n d NE W B IE Q & A Q&A There are always a lot of frequently asked questions with attending any conference. Below we’ll try to answer as many of these as possible. Still have a question? Try the BlogHer ’13 Community Forum. This group is designed for conference goers to connect with each other on all topics involving BlogHer. How do I pick up my badge? If you are registered for Pathfinder, Viewfinder or HealthMinder Day you can pick up your badge on Thursday at the Sheraton on the 3rd floor, starting at 7:00am. If you are only attending BlogHer ’13 on Friday and Saturday you can pick up your badge at McCormick Place beginning Thursday night before Evening at the Expo. The badge will include your preferred data (that you entered during the registration process) and your drink tickets for the official conference parties – so don’t lose this document! At the Registration Desk you will also pick up your badge holder, lanyard, commemorative pin, and conference tote bag. You will also be able to pick up a pedometer from Coca-Cola! I’ve arrived at the hotel. Now what? Tired from a long day of traveling? Head to your room, unwind and power-up that laptop. Remember, inroom Wi-Fi is complimentary for BlogHer attendees in the guest rooms at the Sheraton. Reminder: check in begins at 3 p.m. If you’re arriving on Thursday, you can go ahead and pick up your badge-holder, lanyard, commemorative pin, and conference tote bag. On Thursday we’ll have Registration open from 10:00am-12:00pm at the Sheraton, and then on the 3rd floor of McCormick Place from 4:30pm – 9:00pm. We will reopen registration at the Sheraton at 10pm. What if there’s a problem with my badge? How does registration work? Our Registration & Information Desk, located on the 3rd floor of McCormick Place, will be open on Thursday from 4:30pm - 9:00pm. It will then re-open at 6:30am on Friday and stay open throughout the duration of the conference. Remember, if you’re planning on attending any of the Thursday evening events, you’ll need your conference badge to attend. Pick up your badge at McCormick Place before heading to the evening events at the Sheraton! Also, the Registration desk is (wo)manned by BlogHer staff members and knowledgeable volunteers, so please consider the Registration & Information Desk your one-stop-shop for anything you need during the conference. Will there be room drops this year? How do I make sure I get one? Yes, we will have room drops at the conference this year. Room drops are gifts from our sponsors that the hotel staff places in your room for you. It’s always nice to come back to your room after a hectic day and have a little surprise waiting for you, isn’t it? So how do you make sure you get one? You need to be booked under the BlogHer room block at the Sheraton. The hotel will drop 1 item into every single room, and 2 items into every double room. Adding an extra person onto your room does not mean you’ll get an item for every single person staying there (we wish we could, but it’s just not logistically possible). But hey! That’s what the Swag Exchange is for! Not staying in our room block, or tripling or quadrupling up in your room? Drop by the Swag Exchange and pick up any of the items you missed. Also, please note that hotel staff cannot enter your hotel room if you’ve hung your “Do Not Disturb” sign. Do I need to sign up for sessions in advance? No, we don’t require attendees to sign up for sessions in advance. However, we do recommend creating an itinerary for yourself in advance. Peruse the online agenda or our mobile app and pick out the sessions The BlogHer '13 Conference Guide 44 Q&A a n d NE W B IE Q & A that sound interesting to you. If you end up not liking the session you selected, you should feel free to vote with your feet by walking right out and going to another. We also have a very handy conference scheduler in this guide, as well as in the mobile app, for you to use in planning out your time at the conference. How can I find out about sponsor events and giveaways? Our sponsors have some amazing things in store for you this year, and we know that you don’t want to miss it. There are a number of ways to stay on top of various sponsor promotions and activities: follow @ BlogHerEvents, subscribe to our Conferences RSS Feed, read the Attendee and Sponsor Promotions Newsletters, and stay tuned to the Sponsor Promotions section on BlogHer.com (this is where sign-ups for sponsor events will be). And don’t forget to subscribe to our Sponsor Twitter List – they’ll be announcing and providing updates on their sponsor activities there. Will there be Wi-Fi? Places for me to plug in? There will be complimentary Wi-Fi for all attendees throughout the programming space and in guest rooms at the Sheraton. We’ll also have areas for you to plug in at the front of each breakout room and of course, in our Recharge Lounge, Sponsored by Folgers, in the Expo Hall. With limited outlets for electricity in the breakout rooms, a helpful hint is to bring a power-strip so you can share with your fellow attendees (not a bad way to make new friends either). What do I do if I have a question? What if I lose something? Consider the BlogHer Registration & Information Desk your concierge and help center. There will be BlogHer staff and volunteers at the desk at all times throughout the conference. Need something? Lose something? Have a question? They will be able to steer you in the right direction and will be in direct contact with the entire conference staff at all times. You can also flag down a BlogHer staff member who can help you. We’ll be there with the word “Staff” printed on all our badges to assist you in whatever you need. Can I bring my husband/partner/ friend/children along? Everyone, regardless of age or gender, is welcome to register for the conference. However, only paid registrants are allowed into the conference area (although infants are allowed to accompany a parent or guardian). On-site childcare is available for children ages 3 months to 10 years, for those who pre-register. If interested, please register here. What will the weather be like in Chicago? Chicago in July? It’s going to be hot and humid. So if you plan to leave the hotel during the day, dress appropriately. But bear in mind that with the heat outside comes chilly air-conditioning inside, so bring a light sweater or a jacket to throw on over your summer clothes. What should I wear? As we mentioned above, the weather will be warm outside, but conference spaces are known to be a bit cooler, with the AC pumping. Lightweight, summer attire is best, with layering options. Perhaps a sundress and sweater? Jeans and a t-shirt? Tutu? BlogHer attire runs the gamut. With so many different styles and tastes amongst our attendees, whatever you choose to wear will be just fine. So be you! The most important item of clothing though, is your shoes! Even with all the conference activities happening in close proximity, there’s still a lot of walking and time spent on your feet, so make sure your footwear is comfortable. Your best bet is to bring a couple pairs of shoes with varying heel heights or shapes, so your feet don’t get sore from being in the same position all day – trust us, it works! The BlogHer '13 Conference Guide 45 Q&A a n d NE W B IE Q & A What is BlogHer’s relationship with the sponsors? We do everything we can to keep BlogHer attendee costs to a minimum. Year after year, our sponsor support allows us to continue to grow the conference, while keeping costs for attendees low. Frankly, without them, our events would not be possible. Nor would they be as fun. Not only do sponsors help defray the costs of the event, they provide many of our conference “extras.” Stop by our Sponsors Page to see who will be joining us this year. The official BlogHer sponsors are supporting the entire event and every attendee. You should be aware that unofficial events that are not officially affiliated with BlogHer are considered outboard events (definition: http://www.iaee.com/article?id=183). Here's another great definition from our friends at Mom 2.0 Summit: http://www. mom2summit.com/sponsors/sponsorshippolicy/ Will there be Birds of a Feather this year? Of course! Birds of a Feather is one of the best ways to connect with your blogging tribe, or spread your wings to find a new one! We'll have a set of tables ready for you and your flock on Friday afternoon during lunch. You'll see table signs spread out in the general session room, as well as some blank ones, giving you yet another opportunity to bring your blogging flock together! We hope you make great connections, and continue to flock throughout the rest of the day. I have a sponsor helping to send me to BlogHer. Can I hand out swag onsite? Handing out swag or any other material within the conference space is NOT permitted. A new phenomenon over the last few years, we know that many of this year’s attendees will have personal sponsors, helping them cover their costs for attending the conference. If this applies to you, please be sure to read our Guidelines for Sponsored Bloggers, which will be enforced onsite. Violators of this policy will be given one warning, and thereafter will have their pass revoked should they continue to violate the guidelines. How will I get from the Sheraton to McCormick Place? BlogHer will be providing coaches throughout the day should you find that you need to get from one venue to another. This transportation is provided free of charge to our attendees and the commute is only 11 minutes from door to door. Newbie Q & A Should I bring my laptop? What if I don’t have one? Laptops or tablets are encouraged, and there will be free Wi-Fi throughout the conference space, but they’re certainly not required. Laptops are great for note-taking, blogging from the conference, and uploading all your fabulous photos, but some attendees will find a laptop too heavy or cumbersome. This is why many will opt for a good, old-fashioned notebook and pen. It’s completely up to you. And remember, there’s a handy note-taking tool in our mobile app, so you can keep your session notes on the session description pages – nice and organized. What are the cocktail parties like? The BlogHer cocktail receptions are informal, fun, and a great way to unwind after a day of conferencing. We’ll kick things off on Thursday night with The Evening at the Expo, followed by our Share and Be Shared Reception and The People’s Party. On Friday night, BlogHer will host our Voices of the Year Reception featuring the Open Mic Salon and Killer Karaoke, followed by our Tribe Up Progressive Parties. And on Saturday night we’ll have our Fashion Show and Afterparty and CheeseburgHer. Read about all the evening events here, and The BlogHer '13 Conference Guide 46 Q&A a n d NE W B IE Q & A remember, you’ll need a Full Conference, Expo Hall + Parties Pass, or Single Day Pass to attend these parties. Friday Only or Saturday Only passes will only grant access to the parties on those specific days. What if I don’t know anyone? Who will be there? Don’t worry! Many attendees travel alone and don’t know anyone before the conference. This can be a little scary at first, but most people, newbies or not, can feel a little overwhelmed. More importantly, remember that BlogHer attendees are a friendly group and are eager to meet new blogging buddies. Who will be there? Check out our Attendee Page on BlogHer.com and add yourself to the list while you’re at it! You can also check out the #BlogHer13 Twitter feed for the latest talk about all things BlogHer. Will there be any special activities for BlogHer Newbies onsite? Glad you asked! We’ll be hosting a Newbie Breakfast on Friday morning at 7:30am at McCormick Place. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow newbies and hear from members of the BlogHer Events Team on a range of conference topics, such as programming, sponsors, parties and more, and get answers to all your burning BlogHer questions. The BlogHer '13 Conference Guide 47 B LOGHE R '13 G O IN G GR E E N We at BlogHer strive to only work with eco-friendly venues in support of many green initiatives from recycling, composting, reusing, and community involvement. BlogHer’s Guide: Online Only It would take a lot of paper – and a lot of trees – to print this multi-page guide for every attendee. So this year, once again, the conference guide will only be available digitally. If you choose to print any of this guide, please only print those pages that you need. There will be a printed map and abbreviated agenda on-site for your convenience, and our mobile app will help you look up session info and navigate the conference when you’re on site. Digital Signage In another effort to reduce our printed materials, BlogHer will be bringing back our digital signage. Hey, we are a blogging conference after all! Plus it helps reduce our printed materials. Swag Exchange A conference tradition, the BlogHer Swag Exchange will be back, once again, this year. Experiencing swag overload? We all love a free sample here and there, but in the end, not every item will make it into our suitcases home. That doesn’t mean they should be thrown away though! Bring any items that you won’t keep to the Swag Exchange, pick up any items that you would like, and BlogHer and the Sheraton will ensure that the items get donated or recycled properly. The BlogHer ’13 Tote Back again this year, our reusable conference tote bag will come packed with lots of great sponsored goodies. And not only that, they will come in handy for picking up other giveaways from the Expo Hall. Bring Your Reusable Water Bottle As BlogHer veterans know, we do not provide bottled water at the conference. We’ll have water available throughout the conference space, including in the back of every breakout room, for you to fill up during the day. Also, at McCormick place our plates, etc. are compostable too Power Down, Don’t Just Sleep Whenever possible, unplug your electronics instead of just setting them to “standby.” According to the Department of Energy, up to 20% of each American’s electricity bill comes from appliances and gadgets sitting on standby.
