How To Have More Time
Introduction
If you’re like me your life is filled to overflowing with tasks and responsibilities that
claim all your time and then some. It’s hard enough to find sufficient hours in any given
day to get all these tasks done, let alone have a moment left over to attack housework.
And of course, there’s the fact that I, like 90% of the population, just plain don’t like
housework. Any excuse not to do it is snapped up in a flash. After all, who would pass
up a day at the beach to clean dirty toilets? Really, be reasonable.
I think they have a name for me and those like me: Procrastinators. Google defines
Procrastination as “the deferment or putting-off of an action or task, usually by focusing
on some other distraction”. Did you know it’s Latin for "foremorrowing," or “making
some such of tomorrow”.
This book is filled with tips and tricks that, if put to use, will help streamline the
housework process. And there’s the rub. The tips and tricks will do me no good unless I
put them to use… But it’s such a lovely day… So many things to do…
Ah well, maybe I’ll have to hire a housekeeper and give her this book as a gift. Who
knows? I’ll make that decision tomorrow or maybe the day after that...
To your cleaning success,

For some of us, creating a healthy environment inside your home is just as important as
being healthy outdoors. Now we’re learning that many conventional cleaning products
we grew up with contain harmful ingredients with chemicals such as ammonia and
chlorine. As an example, ammonia found in conventional window cleaners can irritate
your eyes, skin and respiratory passages. According to the EPA, the chlorine found in
household bleach is poisonous. It can burn your skin and eyes on contact, and can be fatal
if inhaled.
Although evidence concerning the harmful effects of chemicals in conventional cleaning
products is mounting, only a small percentage of chemicals have been adequately tested
for their health and environmental effects. Furthermore, the chemicals tested to date have
not been examined in combination with other chemicals. Making matters worse is the fact
that cleaning product manufacturers are not required by law to reveal their products’
ingredients.
What is known is that some of the harmful effects of chemicals contained in conventional
cleaning products include headaches, skin rashes, nausea and vomiting, upper respiratory
irritation, fatigue, wheezing and coughing, dizziness, irritability, asthma, eye irritation
and eye damage, hormone disruption, organ damage including liver and kidney damage,
cancer, and fetal damage.
When shopping for green cleaners, remember to check labels to ensure the products are
truly green. Following are guidelines for shopping for green cleaners:
4
How To Have More Time
Check the label for a manufacturer’s statement that “we disclose all ingredients.” Then
read the list.
If water is listed as an ingredient, make sure it is purified water since water can contain a
lot of chlorine or heavy metals.
If “surfacants” (a cleaning agent) or “chelating agents” are listed as ingredients, make
sure they are plant-based or vegetable-based since petroleum-based surfacants and
chelating agents are highly toxic.
Make sure the product does not contain preservatives.
Check the label to see if it mentions a fragrance. A fragrance ingredient is likely a
perfume which is derived from synthetic chemicals. A nontoxic fragrance is derived from
botanicals or essential oils. The label will specify if it is nontoxic.
Be wary of a label touting the product is “fragrance-free.” This can mean the
manufacturer used a synthetic chemical to mask any fragrances in the product.
Green cleaning products can be purchased at natural grocers.

Green cleaning products are non-toxic, biodegradable, and environmentally safer than
conventional cleaning products. Although you can purchase green cleaning products in
grocery stores and natural grocers, it is also possible to mix your own cleaning
concoctions. Following are a few simple recipes for creating homemade cleaning
products:
All-purpose household cleaner
Dissolve 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 pint of warm water. Use in a spray bottle as
an all-purpose cleaner. Use pure vinegar to clean and shine bathroom fixtures and
stainless steel.
Window cleaner
Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
Household cleaner
Sprinkle salt or baking soda on the surface or on a damp sponge then scour and rinse.
Bathroom cleaner
For cleaning your tub or tile, apply vinegar to a sponge and wipe the surface. Then
sprinkle baking powder on the surface and rub with a damp sponge, followed by rinsing.

Pet stain and odor remover
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray directly on the stain.
After a few minutes, clean with a sponge or brush using warm soapy water. For tougher
stains, mix 2 tablespoons each of salt, vinegar and borax. Rub the pasty mixture into the
carpet and leave the mixture on for several minutes. Wipe clean with a damp rag and
vacuum.
Air freshener
Mix 1 pint of water with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vanilla extract in a spray bottle.
Spray into the air around your home to freshen. For a stovetop air freshener, place 1
tablespoon of whole cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks and 1 teaspoon nutmeg in a pot of water.
Simmer uncovered for an hour or two.
Surface disinfectant
Mix ¼ cup vinegar and 2 tablespoons baking soda with 1 quart water.
Furniture polish
Mix 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Apply a small amount to a
cotton cloth. Rub the cloth to spread the mixture then use to polish furniture. Both
ingredients are perishable, thus the mixture should be made fresh each time you polish.
Mix natural household cleaners and fresheners compliments of Mother Nature!

How To Have More Time
Home Cleaning - Ten Golden Rules To Remember
Cleaning may not be a favourite choice of occupying your time, so follow these simple rules and you'll clean with
the minimum of effort and achieve the results you need!
By Steve Dempster
Cleaning may not be a favourite choice of occupying your time, so follow these simple
rules and you'll clean with the minimum of effort and achieve the results you need!
1. Spills and stains are usually better off treated straight away. Blot spills up immediately
with kitchen roll or absorbent paper and chances are that nothing will remain - leave it
until the day after and the stain will have dried and may well have 'set' - discolouring the
carpet or fabric concerned permanently! Also, if you do have to use water to help remove
a spill, always use cold water - never hot. Hot water will set a stain almost immediately!
One exception to this rule is tracked-in mud. This is best left to dry and then vacuumed or
brushed away.
2. When you clean, remember that it's a good idea to clean vertical surfaces from the top
down. Why? Simply put, gravity ensures that anything you remove by cleaning - dust,
cobwebs and so on - will travel downwards, so don't give yourself extra work by trying to
defy it! When washing walls or windows this is particularly true - don't fall into the trap
of continually wiping up drips and runs!
3. Always dust then wipe. In other words, use the duster first then a damp cloth. Why?
The answer lies in the fact that dust particles cling to wet surfaces much more readily
than dry ones. Finish your dusting then progress to damp wiping - you will save yourself
time and effort!
4. Try the gentlest approach first. If soilage can be removed using a dry duster, don't use
a heavy-duty scourer loaded with aggressive chemicals - it just isn't necessary and means
more work! Also, you have to sometimes make value judgments - does that tiny burnt
12
How To Have More Time
spot on your ceramic hob really warrant an all-out assault with steel wool and harsh
abrasives?
5. Allow any cleaning chemicals time to do their work. A common mistake is to take the
phrase 'spray'n'wipe' literally. Instead, spray cleaner onto the soiled surface - and leave it
there. Go and do another five-minute task then return. You will find that the soilage, will
in most cases, be very easy to remove. Also remember that bactericidal products all need
'dwell time' to work properly!
6. Carry your cleaning materials around with you. This may sound obvious but how many
times have you started cleaning only to find something missing? Invest in a 'carry caddy'
- available from almost any hardware shop - and keep your cleaning products, dusters and
so forth in it. The whole idea is to save you time and effort!
7. If you have a delicate fabric to clean, always try your cleaning product out on an outof-the-way piece where possible. It may be that the object to be cleaned isn't as color-fast
as you first thought! This method is particularly useful when using a product you have
never tried before. Better safe than sorry!
8. Never ever forget that, as a rule of thumb, liquids and electricity don't mix too well. So
if you want to clean your computer monitor or keyboard - spray the cleaning product onto
the cloth, not the object to be cleaned. This ensures that overspray does not penetrate to
the innards of the object with sometimes dire results!
9. Always read the label. This goes for the cleaning product as well as the item to be
cleaned - manufacturer's labels aren't put there for the fun of it! If a rug says dry clean
only, don't get mad if you ruin it by scrubbing it with soap and water! Likewise, if a
product says something like 'not to be used on delicate fabrics' it generally means just
that.
13
How To Have More Time
10. Look after yourself. Most household cleaning products are very low risk when in use
but why take a chance? Always wear protective gloves and an apron and, if using spray
products, lightweight protective goggles aren't a bad idea either. After all, cleaning may
be a chore but it doesn't need to be a danger!
By following these ten simple tips you should be able to keep your cleaning to an easilymanaged minimum.

How To Have More Time
Spring Cleaning
I have found that a cleaning caddy is a very helpful device. You can tote these little carry-alls from room to room,
and you will always have the smaller essentials close at hand.
By Terrie Cogswell
Are you at a loss when it comes to cleaning? I have organized some tips and guidelines to
help you get started, with some organized spring cleaning. Let's start first with the three
main tips:
Take one room at a time.
It is always best to clean from top to bottom. For instance, don't vacuum the carpet and
then clean the overhead fan.
Work in a consecutive order, such as: dusting, washing, vacuuming.
I have found that a cleaning caddy is a very helpful device. You can tote these little carryalls from room to room, and you will always have the smaller essentials close at hand.
Here is what I did: First I purchased a plastic carry-all with compartments, at the local
Family Dollar. Even a child's large art caddy can suffice. Then I filled it with a roll of
paper towels, cloth rags, rubber gloves, my main cleaning solution, pre-diluted in a spray
bottle, disinfecting spray, polishing spray, window cleaner, carpet powders, air freshener,
scrubby pads, sponges, toothbrush, lint brush, and a can of men's shaving cream.
In case you were wondering, men's shaving cream is one of the most ultimate cleaning
agents. It works wonders for cleaning blinds, plastics, shines up the bathroom vanities
splendidly, cleans most out door furniture, and will even clean spots on the carpet. And
guess what else? It's also a lot cheaper than most of your other cleaners out there, and in a
lot of cases works better.
15
How To Have More Time
Now onto some of the cleaning. Suppose you want to tackle the living room first. First
take down all window blinds and curtains. Put the curtains in the wash, while you tend to
the rest of the chores. Blinds can be cleaned by hand, or what I do is let them soak for a
bit in the bathtub. Next, go ahead and get the windows washed, then open them up for
some nice fresh air. Now you can start with your dry dusting, remembering to work from
top to bottom. Don't forget to remove movies, DVD's, books, etc, from shelves and
entertainment centers. Believe it or not, dust does get under and behind these items. Next
comes your wet solutions and disinfectants where it is needed. Now that all the gross
things are out of the way, you can do the vacuuming.
Last but not least, when everything is cleaned up and in some sort of order, you can make
those little touch ups with furniture polish, and then re-hang your fresh smelling blinds
and curtains. See that, there's nothing to it, if done with a little bit of organization. Use
the same technique with the rest of the rooms, remembering to empty closets and shelves
and cleaning within them as well.

Top 10 Bathroom Spring Cleaning Tips
Like migratory bird patterns, humans find the changing of the seasons to be a time when our thoughts turn to
spring cleaning. What seasonal patterns have to do with keeping our homes clean is a mystery, but it continues

times of the year.

Like migratory bird patterns, humans find the changing of the seasons to be a time when
our thoughts turn to spring cleaning. What seasonal patterns have to do with keeping our
homes clean is a mystery, but it continues to be a factor nonetheless. It's almost as if we
only recognize the dirt, dust, clutter and debris only at certain times of the year.
After seeing my brother-in-law's home however, I'm grateful for any reason that would
make him want to clean that filthy disgusting bathroom. [Smile]
The bathroom should be regularly cleaned if only to keep germs under control. There are
some cleaning chores that can be done on a somewhat longer schedule than the weekly
cleaning.
1.
Take a look under the bathroom sink and you probably see a good collection of
half used personal hygiene products. Go through each and every one of them and decide
if they're worth keeping. Some products like medicated shampoos and possibly suntan
lotions are good to keep handy. That green strawberry mint flavored shampoo that
promised that men would go wild but only gave you a rash could probably be tossed into
the garbage.
2.
Take a look at how you store all the paper goods to the bathroom. Are they
organized and easily snagged when needed? If not, maybe it's time to give those boxes of
facial tissue and rolls of toilet paper, a place of their own.
17
How To Have More Time
3.
Next up are the washcloths and towels. If you're like most of us, we tend never to
discard old towels. We end up with a pile of towels and actually only use the first one or
two. If this sounds like you, take stock in how many towels and face cloths you actually
need and send the rest to the rag box.
4.
If your cabinet has drawers, they're probably filled with miscellaneous hair
decorations, bands, pins etc. Go through them and anything not used in the last 2 years
should be thrown out.
5.
Vacuum the inside of the vanity cabinet and drawers to remove hair and lose dirt.
Heck, give them a good cleaning by getting one of those old washcloths damp with clear
water.
6.
Wash the liquid soap container or soap dish. Come on, you know that thing is
disgusting, especially if you have children.
7.
Use a vinegar solution or commercial product like CLR to remove bathroom scum
and hard water deposits from bathtub or shower enclosures. Take down and wash any
fabric shower curtains.
8.
Use a 10% bleach solution in a spray bottle to remove any mold buildup in the tub
area.
9.
Check everything in the medicine cabinet and throw away any prescription or
over-the-counter drugs that have passed their effective expiration date.
10.
Replace that disgusting toilet brush with a new one.

5 Shower Cleaning Tips
No single person can achieve real sanitation of the body if your own shower is soiled and filthy. Like any other
room in your home, it is important to regularly do shower cleaning.
By Anthony Lee
No single person can achieve real sanitation of the body if your own shower is soiled and
filthy. Like any other room in your home, it is important to regularly do shower cleaning.
1. Start with your walls. An important tip for cleaning your bathroom walls is using car
wax. Car wax application to your walls will seal the pores of your walls that will result in
easy cleaning and maintenance. Such application can be undertaken twice a year. For
regular wall cleaning, you can use any general bathroom cleansing solution.
2. From walls, go straight to the bathroom flooring. If you have a tiled shower, all you
need to use is a tile cleaner. Instead of car wax for your walls, paste wax is recommended
to use for flooring. By doing so, you will be able to prevent build-up of water spots.
Finish cleaning by drying the floor with clean and soft rags.
3. After you're finished with the walls and floorings, take some time to clean your
faucets. A cheap and easy cleansing solution to remove water and dirt deposits around
your faucets or drain is vinegar right from your kitchen. All you need to do is soak a cloth
in vinegar and then put it around the faucet. Wait for some time and then scrub it with an
old and unused toothbrush.
4. Vinegar solution also works with sinks. In addition, you can also use baby oils to clean
your sink. However, cleaning the sink varies from the type of stain your sinks have.
Lemon juice is good for light stains. On the other hand, you can combine lemon juice and
a paste of borax if your sink has dark stains.
5. "Being ready at all times!" is the best cleaning tip you can follow. Always have an allpurpose cleaner and a sponge to do easy clean up. Doing a regular clean up will prevent

you from undertaking a series of major bathroom cleaning. Additionally, it is also best to
hang an air freshener inside your bathroom.

Kitchen Cleaning Tips - Easy Hints for Busy Households
With the hectic lives and schedules of many households today, the kitchen is perhaps the busiest room in the
house. It has become not only the room in which we prepare our food, but also a central meeting place for
families and guests. Many people plan their entire day in the kitchen, making lunches, planning and preparing
meals and eating on the run.
By Hunter Pyle
All of this activity can only mean one thing: dirt. And depending on the number of people
in your home, the dirt, grease and grime that are typically found in kitchens can be
significant. It can be quite a hassle to clean from top to bottom, mainly from all of the
cooking that is done in the room, not to mention the expense of the variety of cleaning
products.
But cleaning your kitchen really doesn’t have to be an expensive or a dreaded chore.
Follow these easy tips that will leave your kitchen sparking clean, and leave you with
more free time as well!
An Ounce of Prevention…
- Every day before meals, fill the sink with hot, soapy water. When everyone is finished
eating they can rinse their dishes and put them in to soak. If you have a dishwasher you’ll
save wear and tear by loading it with dishes that are pre-rinsed.
- The sink should also be filled with soapy water while preparing meals as well. This way
you can “wash as you go” and finish cooking without having a pile-up of pots and pans
waiting for you.
- Keep a spoon rest on the stove and a paper towel on the counter to catch drips, spills
and messes from serving and stirring spoons.
22
How To Have More Time
- Keep a supply of aluminum foil handy to cover casseroles before baking to prevent
spills and burns. It’s also helpful to put a piece on the bottom of the oven to catch drips so
when it’s time to clean the oven, it won’t be a day-long event.
- Lids from various sized butter or margarine containers make excellent “coasters” for
jars and bottles in the fridge or cabinets. You’ll be able to catch spills from honey, syrups
and oils and then simply wash the lid instead of the whole shelf.
- Scratch marks on a stainless steel sink are nearly impossible to remove, if at all, so
prevention is critical for keeping your sink looking its best. Always use a rubber mat on
the bottom of the sink to protect it from scrapes and marks from sharp knives.
More Tips to Quickly Clean The…
- Sink
An easy way to clean rust stains on a stainless steel sink or mineral deposits around
faucets is to scrub the area with a simple lemon.
- Dishwasher
Rinse the filter after every use and regularly clean the moving components as well as the
outer surface. Get rid of mineral deposits by running a cup of vinegar through an empty
wash cycle.
23
How To Have More Time
- Refrigerator
Use a solution of baking soda and water to wipe down all of the shelves and surfaces,
remember to rinse off jars and bottles before replacing them. Clean the bottom drain pan
with warm, soapy water and clean the condenser coils on the back of the fridge twice a
year using a vacuum cleaner and a small attachment. Even frost-free freezers need
cleaned once a year also using baking soda and water. And don’t forget to place an open
box in both the fridge and the freezer to absorb odors and keep foods fresh.
- Microwave
To remove dirt from the inside of the microwave, place a dish of hot water with a slice of
lemon and set the timer until the water boils. The steam that is produced will dissolve the
build up of dirt and make it a breeze to wipe clean.

Laminate counter tops come with a lot of perks. They can be quite beautiful. They are
generally quite affordable. They are also fairly easy to care for. These common kitchen
and bathroom counters have some special instructions that come along with them,
however.
Making sure laminate counter tops stay looking beautiful does require a bit of special
attention. Just like all other counter tops out there, the better they are cared for the longer
they will stay looking great.
General care:
* Avoid dropping heavy objects on them. Laminate countertops are pretty darn tough, but
the laminate itself can be damaged by a particularly nasty drop. Take care when lifting
heavy items onto the counters or over them.
* Don't let them burn. Laminate counters by their nature can be damaged by particularly
hot items. Do not place hot pots and pans directly on their surface. Instead, use hotplates,
hot pads or even heavy towels to protect the surface.
* Avoid cuts. Make sure not to cut directly on the surface of laminate counters. Use
cutting boards, stones or plates instead to protect the finish and surface of the counters.
This practice is required for just about every counter top out there. Using the right cutting
techniques not only protects the counters, it also protects the knives.
25
How To Have More Time
* Be careful with water. Too much water flooded onto a laminate counter top can cause
problems with the seams. If water gets inside, the substrate can swell and ruin the
appearance of the counter tops.
* Don't use harsh chemicals. Harsh chemicals that have acid in the mix do not go well
with laminates. Avoid using them on or near these counters. The types of cleaners to
exercise care with include such things as drain unclogging agents, metal cleaners,
ceramic cleaners and even rust and lime removers.
Basic cleaning for laminate counter tops is very similar to the care instructions for most
other counters. The instructions include:
* Simple cleaning. Wipe up these counters with a clean, soft cloth for basic, everyday
cleaning. This will help remove surface dust and dirt without damaging the finish.
* Tough stains. Mild household cleaners generally work very well on getting stains out.
Avoid using harsh abrasive cleansers. Do not use abrasive sponges or steel wool on
laminates. For really bad stains, create a paste out of baking soda and water. Blot this up
rather than scrubbing and scraping. Take care to wipe up spills as quickly as possible as
laminates can stain permanently.
* Waxing. There are special waxes for laminates that can help create a protective surface
to stop stains from sinking in. These waxes should be used on a fairly regular basis to
help protect the appearance of counters. Reapplications should be done if the surface wax
becomes worn.
Laminate counter tops are a little more susceptible to damage than some of the other
options out there. Still, these counters can be beautiful additions to any home. With
proper care and cleaning, they can look great for years to come.

6 Quick Cleaning Tips for Hardwood Floors
Your home is one of your most precious belongings. You want to keep it as clean as possible but there are times

quick cleaning tips and you'll be done in no time.

Your home is one of your most precious belongings. You want to keep it as clean as
possible but there are times when you find it hard to clean the floor, especially if it's
hardwood. So how will you clean it? Consider these quick cleaning tips and you'll be
done in no time.
1. Always sweep your hardwood floor using fine, soft bristle broom. Every time you see
dust or dirt, sweep the floor; it would only take about a few seconds of your time.
2. Your floor has many enemies, and one deadly enemy is water. Once you see a water
spill on your hardwood floor, remove it right away. Wet spills should be removed as soon
as possible using a vacuum (wet/dry) or soft towels. Make sure that the floor is
thoroughly dried otherwise this will be the start of your floor's deterioration.
3. You should vacuum your hardwood floor twice every week but others prefer to
vacuum their floor only once every week to reduce scratching. To ensure that your floor
is free from any scratch, use the soft brush vacuum attachment.
4. As much as possible, avoid wearing high heels and heavy shoes over your hardwood
floors because they can cause unwanted dents.
5. When rearranging your furniture, don't drag them and other heavy objects across your
hardwood floor. Clean your floor and remove dirt or dust thoroughly. Use gliding pads
for your furniture and slide them across your floor.
28

6. Make sure that you put floor mats on every doorway so that the shoes can't carry dirt to
your hardwood floor.
So there you have it, six quick cleaning tips. If you carefully observe these tips, you will

Carpet Cleaning How To - Three Carpet Cleaning Tips You Don't
Want To Miss
Stop letting unsightly carpet stains and carpet odors make you embarrassed to invite people into your home.
Use these simple carpet cleaning how to tips to make your carpets looks fresh and new again.
By Marie Stark
Do you need a few carpet cleaning how to tips?
Do you avoid inviting friends and family to your house because of
unsightly carpet stains and embarrassing carpet odors?
Do your children and pets always seem to track mud across the
carpet?
Do your children --or perhaps you -- spill drinks on the carpet
on an almost daily basis?
If you would like to end your dread of dirty and smelly carpets,
relax and follow these three simple carpet cleaning tips for
keeping your carpet stain free and for carpet odor removal.
Carpet Cleaning Tip #1: Routine Maintenance for a Longer Life
Vacuum your carpets on a regular basis. Dirt, pet hair, and
other grime accumulate in the carpet fibers resulting in dirty
looking carpet and problems for allergy sufferers. If the dirt
and grime is left to build up, your carpet can become damaged and
it will be more difficult to thoroughly clean.
Carpet Cleaning Tip #2: Clean Spills Immediately
30
How To Have More Time
Clean up spills immediately to avoid odors and stains. If a
solid substance --food or animal waste -- is the problem, use
paper towels to carefully remove the mess before cleaning the
carpet. Take care to lift the mess straight up without further
rubbing it into the carpet. Once the problem is removed, begin to
clean the spot with plain water and paper towels or clean rags.
Blot the area with the paper towels and then using the towels,
move in a circular motion clockwise and then repeat going counter
clockwise to remove all traces of the mess. Avoid scrubbing the
carpet spill as this may damage the fibers of the carpet.
Carpet Cleaning Tip #3: Use the Mildest Form of Cleaner Possible
If plain water does not remove the spill, combine water and a
small amount of mild liquid soap. This solution should help
remove most stains. However, if you still can't get the spill
clean, consider a chemical carpet spot remover. Remember that
chemicals can damage carpet fibers and products designed
specifically to remove carpet stains may contain dangerous
chemicals.
Use chemical products sparingly. Make sure you work in a well
ventilated area and wear gloves. Before using a chemical cleaner,
test it in a hidden area to make sure it will not discolor or harm
your carpet . To clean the spot, apply a small amount of the spot
remover to a rag and wipe gently in a circular motion. Rinse with
clean water and blot dry with more rags. Remove as much water as
possible to avoid mildew or carpet damage.
31
How To Have More Time
Taking the time to clean up spills immediately will prevent the
unsightly carpet stains and embarrassing carpet odors that may
prevent you from enjoying the company of friends and family in

Tips on Cleaning and Caring for Upholstery
We invest a lot of money in our furniture. So knowing how to clean and care for our upholstery is essential. Here
are some general care guidelines to consider before cleaning.
By Hari Artical
We invest a lot of money in our furniture. So knowing how to clean and care for our
upholstery is essential. Here are some general care guidelines to consider before cleaning.
Caring for Upholstery
You can increase the life of upholstery by following a few simple rules:
1. Vacuuming and light brushing on weekly basis helps to eliminate dirt before it
becomes embedded in the fibers, causing the fabric to abrade.
2. Turn and reverse loose cushion every week to allow even distribution of wear and tear.
3. Clean spots and stains quickly.
4. If you have a large family, consider using nylon covers for your upholstery. It is long
lasting and you can remove most stains easily.
Cleaning Upholstery
Clean your upholstery with an effective cleaner. Choose one that is safe on your fabric
and does not contain harsh chemicals to avoid having any sticky remains. Getting a
cleaning solution that cleans, remove stains and control odors is a good choice. It saves
you time and money.
•Always vacuum or brush your upholstery first to remove dust and loose hair.
•Apply the cleaner and brush firmly any stained areas.
33
How To Have More Time
•Wait for one minute or less then wipe away the cleaner with a damp cloth or sponge.
•Keep your upholstery dry while cleaning it to avoid damage. Open a window or use air
condition and allow it to dry thoroughly.
Identify Stains
Before trying to remove a stain from your upholstered furniture, you need to know the
type of fabric you have. Most manufacturers put cleaning codes on the furniture hangtag
or label. These codes tell you the best way to clean and remove stains. Here is a list of
those codes:
•WS: fabric may be cleaned with water-based cleaning agents and foams,
as well as
with mild, water-free dry cleaning solvents.
•W: use water-based cleaning agents or foams only.
•S: use only mild, water-free dry cleaning solvents.
•X: do not use foam or liquid agents on this fabric. You can vacuum or brush lightly to
remove soil and grime.
Removing Stains
You should inspect your upholstery for spots and stains and identify your problem areas.
Usually a good cleaner can clean and work on removing the stains as well. But for the
tough and sticky stains like grease, crayon, gum, and ink, treat the stain first before
cleaning. A great option to use is a powerful solvent containing citrus , which break down
tough stains easily leaving fresh smell.
34
How To Have More Time
•Always pre-treat stains first for color fastness in an inconspicuous area.
•Spray directly on stain and let stand for 30 seconds.
•Scrub with a brush and let is sit for 2 to 4 minutes.
•Clean with a damp sponge or rinse with water. If stain persists, repeat treatment and
rewash.
To remove stains from non-washable upholstery, use an effective product made
especially for dry cleanable fabrics. It is an excellent pre-treater with a lot of convenience
and ease of use. Spray the soiled part and blot immediately from outside to the center, to
avoid the clean part from leaving a mark.

Top Ten Tips to Upholstery Fabric Stain Removal
We've extracted the best tips around to give you one easy article to keep on hand for those irritating and difficult
to remove stains from your upholstery.
By Sonya Alvino
Upholstery fabric stains present larger problems than your average clothing stain, for one,
the cost of replacing a sofa or chair is much larger than a shirt or skirt. We've tried to
make it easy with our top ten tips for getting rid of unsightly sofa stains.
Upholstery fabrics made from natural fibers and/or dyes or finishes may require special
treatment so it’s wise to heed the advice of your upholstery fabric manufacturer.
Fortunately most have made it easy for us by categorizing their fabrics according to these
simple codes:
S – Solvent clean (that is “dry-cleaning”)
W – Water clean
WS – Water or Solvent clean
X – No liquids, vacuum clean only
Where accidents happen, follow these tried and tested steps towards fast and easy stain
removal:
1.
Always test your chosen potion on an inconspicuous area of your upholstery
before applying to your stain, and analyze the result.
36
How To Have More Time
2.
Act fast: as a rule of thumb, the longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove so
fast action is definitely a step in the right direction.
3.
Wet stains - blot a white cloth on the area to absorb any excess moisture. Do not
rub.
4.
Thick stains - leave the stain to dry and brush off the residue.
5.
For non-protein based fabrics (ie. “W” or “WS” fabrics: acetate, herculon, nylon,
olefin and polyester), rinse the stain in pure water, blot with a white cloth, rinse, blot,
rinse, until the stain disappears. For more stubborn stains rub in a mild, water soluble
detergent into the area in a circular fashion, and then continue the rinse, blot, rinse cycle
again until the stain lifts.
6.
For protein based fabrics (ie. “S” fabrics: cotton, linen, rayon, silk and wool)
apply water free solvents or dry cleaning products (to avoid water stains) to the area and
gently rub, rinse and blot.
7.
Blood: mix 2 tablespoons of table salt with 1 quart of water and apply the rinse,
blot, rinse technique. If the stain persists, try applying a diluted solution of hydrogen
peroxide.
8.
Organic dye stains like juice, wine, mustard: spot clean with water-based cleaner
ie. Stain magic, or dab with a mixture of 1 part vinegar and three parts water.
9.
Red Wine: mix equal parts of soap detergent and hydrogen peroxide and rub, or
dash or spray over your stain. Keep in mind that the hydrogen peroxide could well lighten
some dyes so test this method first.
37
How To Have More Time
10.
Ink: spray hairspray on the area and wash as usual.
Upholstery fabric manufacturers usually suggest regular vacuuming to remove dust and
allergens from fabric, as well as professional upholstery cleaning once per year to
maximize the life of the fabric.

8 Ways to Conquer Clutter
This article will show fast and easy ways to get rid of your clutter.
By Fazil H
Life has a funny way of storing itself. We have things in our apartments that we have not
used in years. After the birth of our daughter, we realize that we had to make space for
her things. Unfortunately, we had clutter in our closets and study area. Getting rid of
clutter is not easy but it can be accomplished.
So if you find yourself not being able to find your things, having too many thing you
don’t use, not having enough space then these tips will help you conquer clutter.
1. Throw it away
Before I got married, I used to keep a lot of online articles that I did not use for months.
After, I got married my wife convinced me that I would not have use for those articles. If
I needed the information, then I could do research online to find it.
2. Get Storage Containers
Our closets used to be extremely cluttered, and we never seemed to have enough space;
storage containers solved that problem. We used to keep clothes for every season in our
closets. When we got storage containers we stored clothes that were not being used for
the current season. That gave us the extra space and sanity we needed.
3. Free Stuff is not Always Good
The amount of free stuff we’ve (mostly me) collected at times became a clutter. I have
collected mostly magazines, tee shirts, CDs and newspapers. If you will not use your
39
How To Have More Time
freebie within one week, then don’t accept it. When you are finished with it, pass it on, if
possible, to someone for free.
4. Give it Away
The old saying one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, is true. Your clutter may
not be trash. However, the fact that, you would not miss it if someone threw it out is
proof that you don’t need it. For example, that pair of jeans and shirt that is sitting in our
closet that we have not used for more than a year could greatly benefit someone. There a
numerous charities and organizations who collect clothes for the needy. We need to give
our clutter to those more in need.
5. Sell It
You might not want to give away or trash your expensive clutter. The solution is to sell it.
You could sell it online on sites such as CraigsList or eBay. Trying a low tech approach
such as having a garage sale could also work well.
6. Shred it
Some of us are so afraid of identity theft that we are, rightfully, reluctant to throw away
our person documents. The solution is to get a shredder. I used to have several years of
banks statement, before I got married. After I got married, my wife got tired of the
clutter, and she got a shredder and started shredding those statements. If you have not
noticed yet, she can’t stand clutter. If we ever need to get a past statement or transaction
log the bank will be able to go into their databases and access history files for our
account.

7. Get Professional Help
Some health experts recognize that wanting to live in clutter as a sickness. I remember
seeing a episode of Oprah that consisted of clutter addicts. She got them the professional
help they needed and their lives changed for the better. Some of the guests did not
believe they had a problem. They grew attached to their clutter so much that it became a
norm to live with it. The lesson we learned from that episode is that to get rid of clutter
we have to view it as a problem.
8. Create and Stick to a Schedule
Staying clutter free is an ongoing mission. My wife and I take inventory of our minor
clutter such as fliers and newspapers everyday. We evaluate our major clutters such as
our clothes closet and bookshelf every three months. You should reflect daily on the
clutter and think about how to get rid of it.
It does take time to get rid of the clutter but once you have a clutter avoidance plan stick
to it.
Also, a plan that is not implemented is clutter.
Let Go Of Clutter.

Massive Decluttering For Your Home – A Lean-And-Mean Plan
What's the "emergency plan" to declutter your home effectively like? Grab a few simple tips by reading this leanand-mean plan.
By Lou Smith
Let’s get down to business. Decluttering your home starts with making a list. That’s your
written plan of steadily attacking what’s been standing in your way. The easiest angle of
attack is going to be a raw-and-ready move on clutter spots where you can make the
fastest and most visible progress.
Which one is it? It’s your call. For example, is it a toss up between first getting to the
living room or the office? Blitz through and transform the room where guests and visitors
are likely to gather the most first. So, if it’s your living room – go for it. (Match your
launch spot of decluttering to your specific needs.)
If it’s the latter, an office can usually handle its proverbial “organized mess” for a smidge
longer, and without “witnesses”. While the office can simply wait, the living room is
where you eagerly begin disarming the clutter of its power over you.
You are in charge. Decide according to what is most important to you to declutter first.
That’s your first step. The second one: take a good look around you. Take a before and
after picture to have hard evidence that your efforts were worth every minute of your
valuable time.
Now, arm yourself with the “Tools for the Decluttering Trade”.
You’ll need garbage bags, cardboard or plastic boxes, cleaning supplies (including a
vacuum cleaner), a notebook with a pen, handy refreshments, and your favorite goodmood tunes. Add to the list as you see fit.
43
How To Have More Time
Start from one corner of the room, or even in the middle, if you feel like it. Warm up by
creating good working space around you. Then, select and clear some handy space for
“dumping grounds” to make your efforts uninterrupted and effective.
Next, dominate from here by steadily moving forward. The “stuff” that has been sitting
around for ages while gradually impinging on your everyday life – you are after it today.
Start with using garbage bags, boxes, and storage bins that you’ve got ready and start
filling them up.
Paperwork is clutter as well; sort through it enough as not to miss any important
documents like banking statements, overdue utility bills, or other essential
correspondence alike. Keep them where you can easily find them for now. Transfer
everything else onto the dumping grounds.
Watch it, though. If at any time you get the urge to sit down and wade through your
paperwork in depth, the end of your decluttering efforts sets in. Staying AWAY from
“doing” your paperwork makes more sense. Resist the urge and press on. You’ll get
around to that a bit later.
Now, as for anything that looks extra nasty and remotely resembles bits and pieces like if
they came out of a refuse bin – getting rid of them is the hygienic way to go.
Everything else that doesn’t fall into the previous two categories should go into:
1.Essential Items – the stuff that you absolutely positively must have.
2. Sentimental Items – you don’t need’em but they do bring back fond memories.
(Note: Do they bring occasional fond memories, or have they been forcing you to live in
the past?)
44
How To Have More Time
3. Items You Want …but don’t need – I think that says it all, don’t you think?
Why does this blitz tactic deliver? You’re not stuck on “doing” paperwork. That comes
later when you can fully focus on doing your paperwork.
What also makes this method tick is the small corner you’ve cleared for the “dumping
grounds”.
Once you get into the swing of things, it’s downright invigorating to be able to throw
things around the room as your “purging action” takes a load off.
At last, decluttering a messy room becomes less of a chore and more fun and relaxed.
What do you do with everything that’s piled up on “the dumping grounds” by the end of
the day?
Let large garbage bags gobble up anything that’s clearly going to the garbage bin.
Recycle items that you can. Donate any usable and in-a-good-working-condition items to
charity.
In short, quickly sort the stuff and get it out.
That’s the golden rule to follow at the end of every power-decluttering day.
Why?
One: You want to avoid mixing the stuff you want to dump with the stuff you want to
keep (after you’ve done such a great job :).
Two: You may need more than a day to declutter a room. Seeing a part of the job done
gives you the inspiration fuel to continue.
45
How To Have More Time
If it’s discouraging to declutter everything in an uninterrupted, massive rip through, take
a short break to refresh, and come back early to finish the task with flying colors. On the
other hand, if the idea of leaving the job half done bugs you to no end, soothe the
uneasiness by finishing the crack down on clutter without delays.

External Housecleaning Tips
This article provides readers with external housecleaning tips.
By Kristi Patrice Carter
There are thousands of hints available for cleaning the inside of your house, but what
about external cleaning? After all, the outside of your home is the first thing guests will
see before they even set foot into your home. When cleaning the outside of your home,
what steps should you take in order to present your home in the best way?
The first thing you should do is rent a power washer. You should power wash your house
at least once a year so that you can examine the outside of our home. This is very easy
and only takes about half an hour. While you are washing the house, you may notice
peeling paint on the trim or others things that may need to be fixed. Once you have
finished power washing the house, you can then address those problems.
Your windows should also be cleaned at this point. It used to be very difficult to clean
the outside of your windows, but many changes have been made to make this task easier.
New windows now tip out from the inside to allow you to clean the outside of the
window from the inside of your home. If you do not have these windows, you can
purchase window cleaning fluid that attaches to your hose. You can then spray your
windows with the cleaning solution in order to easily wash the outside of your windows.
You will also need to take a look at the area around your garage. Many people allow this
area to be cluttered with garbage cans, recycling bins, and other assorted debris. The first
thing you will need to do is address any debris. This is unsightly and impresses upon
your guests that the inside of your home may be dirty and cluttered. Once you have
removed any debris. Take a few minutes to make sure your garbage cans and recycling
bins are in good condition. If they are not, replace them. Take the time to clean them
and arrange them neatly along the side of the garage.
47
How To Have More Time
You will also need to clean your yard. Pick up any branches or clutter that is in your
yard. Take a look at your bushes and trees. Do they need pruning? If so, this is a very
easy task. If any are dead, take the time to remove them from your property. Also, weed
any garden area you may have. This will make your yard appear clean and tidy. You
should finish by mowing your lawn and doing any edging work.
Cleaning the outside of your home is essential. After all, no one wants the friends and
neighbors to think they are dirty. It only takes one afternoon in order to thoroughly clean
the outside of your home.
