THE TIMES OF INDIA, CHENNAI WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10, 2010 Consultant To Give Report This Friday On... How to turn T Nagar pedestrian-friendly Bhama Devi Ravi | TNN Chennai: In probably the first concerted effort to make T Nagar pedestrian-friendly, a report will be submitted to the Chennai Corporation on Friday. The report on ‘T Nagar pedestrianisation and redevelopment project’, prepared by Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj and Townland Consultants, will provide a comprehensive picture of the problems and solutions. Putting existing pedestrian space to better use and creation of more space are likely to be the highlights of the report. This, the project aims to achieve, through repositioning of hawkers and preventing haphazard parking of vehicles. “The aim is to provide amenities to all, and our top priority is to make the area pedestrian-friendly and ensure smooth traffic flow,” said corporation commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni. “There are five stakeholders in the area under survey and the objective is to address their many concerns,” he added. The methodology for the improvement and redevelopment would factor in concerns of the residents of the neighbourhood, shopkeepers on Usman Road, shoppers who are not residents of the area, auto drivers, hawkers and staff employed 5 TIMES CITY FIRST EFFORT: The report on T Nagar pedestrianisation project prepared by Jones Lang LaSalle will provide a comprehensive picture of problems and solutions in the thousands of shops. The project will cover an area of 6.85 sq km, added Lakhoni. “Random surveys of the stake holders would be conducted before a blueprint is prepared,” said K Phanindra Reddy, managing director and CEO of Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Services Limited. “Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj and Townland Consultants would conduct wide ranging surveys,” he added. Emerging as a key commuter area, T Nagar has witnessed exponential growth; hundreds of thousands of people pass through the area every day. “The flip-side to living in an area with good access to all your needs is the higher vehicular movement and greater noise pollution. The relentless movement of people has made living and commuting in the area a stress-filled experience,” says K Padma, a resident of the area for 15 years. Even as a number of infrastructure facilities such as flyovers, and traffic modifications have taken place in recent years, the burden of development is still a challenge, said officials. “The project offers to examine options for a more holistic solution,” said Lakhoni. “Even policy suggestions and a paradigm shift would be explored, if suggested by the consultants,” he added. The idea of area-specific redevelopment evolved in the city over two years ago, with Chennai City Connect, an NGO and entities such as Chennai Corporation working in tandem. Some of the recruiting companies : TIMES NEWS NETWORK Chennai: The Madras High Court has refused to interfere with the IPL’s season-3 schedule, and has rejected a plea which said that the event overlapped the board examinations for SSLC and plus-two. Dismissing a PIL filed by film producer Hennry on Tuesday, Chief Justice HL Gokhale and Justice V Dhanapalan, asked the authorities concerned to consider the representation. Hennry said the IPL’s March to April schedule overlapped the board examinations, and it would affect the students’ preparations. Besides REJECTED ONCE AGAIN seeking a stay on the schedule, the petitioner wanted the court to direct the IPL management and the state to frame guidelines to regulate and monitor sports activities in the students’ interest. This is the second PIL filed by Hennry, whose first petition was disposed of by the court on February 17 with a direction that he submit a representation to the authorities. He then approached the BCCI and the IPL. Since there was no response from them, he filed the present petition. The first bench, disapproving of the BCCI’s stand that the state did not have jurisdiction over the issue, said the authorities should pass an order, before conveying the decision to the petitioner. “If the Centre is of the view that the representation deserves to be rejected, it may reject the same without issuing notice to the BCCI. But it must first take some decision on the representation, and that decision should be communicated to the petitioner,” the judges said.
