When this question was asked by Thomas Stanley, majority of 733 multi-millionaires responded ‘being honest with people’. I’m a firm believer in learning from adversity. Often the worst of times can turn to your advantage, my life is a study of that” – Donald Trump, after turning around his $935 million debt into a $3.7 billion fortune. Remember the life story of Mr. Steve Jobs of Apple Computer? After learning that latest model of i-phone is short in the stores and there are some issues related to i-phone’s latest model, I wondered about the founder of Apple – Mr. Steve Jobs. Who is Mr. Jobs – a self-made billionaire? Another great example that never fails to inspire me about turning crushing failure into resounding success is the story of Steve Jobs, the founder and current CEO of Apple Computers. Steve co-founded Apple at the age of 21 in 1976. Within four years, the company was listed on the stock exchange and Steve was worth US$217 million at the age of 25. As Apple continued its How To Get Motivated At A Workplace phenomenal growth, it was decided that professional management had to be hired to run the huge organization. So in 1983, Steve hired John Scully to be the CEO. However, within two years, the CEO and directors at Apple could not get along with Steve Jobs (he was known to be an erratic and emotional manager) and stripped him of all his duties, forcing him to resign from the very company he founded in failure and disgrace. To make things worse, Apple sued Steve for neglecting his duties. While those in the business world wrote him off, Steve who possessed the millionaire mindset, took it as a huge learning experience (millionaire habit and took the proactive action of starting a new and better company called NeXT computers. He believed that he could develop a range of hardware and software that would be even better than that at Apple. Did He He Succeed? Unfortunately, NeXT’s hardware division became a huge failure. Undaunted, he again took the feedback and went on to found Pixar Animation Studios, which became a huge success in creating the first breakthrough fully digitally animated movie 99 ‘Toy Story’. In the meantime, Apple Computer was on the verge of bankruptcy in 1995 after suffering from internal mismanagement and lack of new product innovation. The company was making losses of $800 million to $1 billion a year and its share price dropped from a high of $18 to $3.80. Believing that he could save Apple, Steve Jobs agreed to return as CEO for a nominal pay of $1 (he was doing it purely for the passion). When Steve took over, he fired all the unproductive executives and spearheaded the launch of revolutionary products like the iMac, iPod and iTunes. The revolutionary operating system (OS) he developed at NeXT was then evolved into the highly popular Mac OS X. As a result of these successful products, Apple turned its $1 billion loss into $1.3 billion in profits by 2005. Its share price rose from $3.80 to a high of $75! Looking back, Steve realized that if he never got fired from Apple, he would never have founded NeXT and Pixar Animation. If not for Pixar, he would not have become a pioneer in digital animation and if not for NeXT software he developed, Apple would never have the Mac OS X operating system that has made Apple a huge success today. It is for this reason that many millionaires believe that ‘everything happens for a reason’ and that ‘adversity is often opportunity in How To Get Motivated At A Workplace disguise’ provided you learn from your experiences and continue to take consistent action! Habit 9: Respect And Love Money! Take a pause and think: Do you think that money is evil? .................................................................................. .................................................................................. .................................................................................. .................................................................................. Do you think it is bad? .................................................................................. .................................................................................. .................................................................................. .................................................................................. Rethink if you want to be a millionaire as all self made millionaire respect and love money! Five Secrets Of How You Can Become A Millionaire. Millionaire. 1. Set Your Sights On Where You’re You’re Going. Have A Vision. Vision. 101 Think big. And remember that everyone has to start at the beginning. Even Warren Buffet had to invest $25 before he could make $25 billion. Set lofty goals, and then begin taking small steps to reach them. 2. Educate Yourself. Yourself. Read books and magazines. If you don’t know how to do something, research the answer. I’m amazed how much of my financial success is attributable to simply reading personal finance books. Many of them say the same things. Once you’ve read enough of them, the advice begins to be burned on your brain. Remember: knowledge is power. 3. Passion Passion Pays Off. Off. Love what you do. When you’re passionate about your work, you care about the consequences. “According to research by Thomas J. Stanley, author of The Millionaire Mind, over 80 percent of millionaires say they never would have been successful if their vocation wasn’t something they cared about.” 4. Grow Your Your Money. How To Get Motivated At A Workplace Pay your 10% Tithe first on every income you get and then another 10% pay yourself from the 90%. When you are living paychequepaycheque-toto-paycheque, paycheque it can be difficult to look beyond your immediate needs. But it’s precisely by doing this that you’ll have the best chance in life for escaping your circumstances. Squirrel away money for your retirement, or for other investments in cd rates, savings accounts or even money market accounts. 5. No Guts, No No Glory. Take risks. I’ve often heard that successful people are the biggest failures of all. They’ve failed many times. But they pick themselves back up and try again. Most people never try because they’re afraid of the possible downsides. Successful people don’t worry about the downside — they’re focused on the possible payoff. But the biggest secret of all is to stop spending. Every millionaire we researched, has one thing in common: Not a single one spends needlessly. In a survey that indicates 103 many wealthy people spend money “with a middle-class mindset”, clipping coupons and shopping at sales. The more I learn, the more I believe this to be the case. Millionaires may have earned their money through a combination of discipline and dedication, but it’s their frugal habits that keep them rich. May you be the Next Millionaire! How To Get Motivated At A Workplace *9* ESSENTIAL SKILLS OF A MILLIONAIRE 105 Never stop learning. How To Get Motivated At A Workplace Essential Skills Of Millionaires Step 1: Adopt The The MillionMillion-Dollar Mindset M illionaires see learning experiences, where Mister Ordinary sees failure. The moment you adopt the beliefs and habits of a millionaire, your perception of the world will change completely and you will realize that there are money-making opportunities everywhere and everyday around you. Amazingly, these are opportunities that you were once quite blind to! Step 2: Set Clear Financial Goals Wealth never happens by chance. It always begins with a clear goal in mind. At one point of time in their life, millionaires always make a decision to become rich. However, whenever I ask 107 most people what their financial goals are, I often get a blank stare. This is a major reason why they will never achieve any level of wealth because they have no clue what it is. Unless you have a specific figure to focus on, you will never be able to develop a strategy to achieve it. Step 3: Create A Financial Plan Once you have set specific financial targets of how much you want to earn and how much money you want to accumulate, you can then develop an effective plan to achieve it. Goals by themselves are nothing but pipe dreams. Only when you create a plan, have you made your goal a possibility. The moment you start taking action on your plan, your dream becomes a reality. Step 4: Massively Increase Your Income After developing their financial plan, most people tend to become initially disheartened. They look at their plan and realize that with the amount they are earning and saving right now, it will be decades before they see any big money. How To Get Motivated At A Workplace It is therefore important that you learn how to accelerate and turbo-charge your financial plan by taking steps to massively increasing your income. Step 5: Manage Your Money & Reduce Expenses Many people think that by increasing their income, their wealth will automatically increase. Unfortunately, increasing income is only one side of the wealth equation. After all, there are people who earn $3,000 a month who are broke and there are those who earn $30,000 who are still broke. The reason is because when we don’t manage the money we earn, our expenses will always rise to our level of income, wiping out any surplus we have! Step 6: Grow Your Money at Millionaire Returns By increasing your income and reducing your expenses, you will find that you will be able to accumulate a surplus of funds that you can use to help you build your fortune. You need to do this because, no matter how hard you work and save, you will never be able to create phenomenal 109 wealth unless you learn how to put your money to work for you. Through the power of compounding, you will be able to take small sums of money and build it into huge returns over time. Step 7: Protect Your Fortune There is no use working hard to build your personal fortune only to see it all taken away from you. There are many people who have taken decades to build their fortune only to see it wiped out by an accident, unforeseen illness or through an unexpected lawsuit. Self-made millionaires engage professionals like insurance advisors, lawyers and accountants to help them build a financial fortress so their wealth is protected from potential creditors, plaintiffs looking to sue and the government who may take away a big chunk of your wealth through a whole range of taxes that you may not have even heard about. Habit 8: Turn Failure Into Into Success How To Get Motivated At A Workplace “My policy is to learn from the past, focus on the present, and dream about the future. I’m a firm believer in learning from adversity. Often the worst of times can turn to your advantage, my life is a study of that” – Donald Trump, after turning around his $935 million debt into a $3.7 billion fortune. Habit 9: Respect and Love Love Money! Take a pause and think: Do you think that money is evil? .................................................................................. .................................................................................. .................................................................................. .................................................................................. Do you think it is bad? .................................................................................. .................................................................................. .................................................................................. .................................................................................. Rethink if you want to be a millionaire as all self made millionaire respect and love money! 111 Tips On How To Be Happy 1) Be happy where you are right now. 2) Happiness, more than anything, it is a choice we make every day. 3) Happiness is understanding the things we can’t change yet and working on those we can. 4) Put a smile on your face. It changes how you think. 5) Whatever you get, accept it and deal with it. 6) Problems = Catalyst to take Action. 7) Learn from the elephants! 8) Put everything you have into whatever you are doing now. 9) Its not what you get. It’s what you become that matters. 10) No one else is going to make you happier. Work on yourself. How To Get Motivated At A Workplace *10* HOW YOU CAN EARN MONEY QUICKLY? 113 Package your advice and learn how to inform others. How To Get Motivated At A Workplace How Can You Earn Money Quickly? Quickly? 1. Find something you love, value and are good at or your gifted talent. 2. Learn To Sell something in line with your passion. Find something you love, value and are good at or your gifted talent. Do a market savvy and selling savvy to then package it into a Business Intellectual property (Books and Audio Materials). If You Want to Succeed in Anything, You Have to Learn How to Sell I go on to explain. Think about it. Isn’t it true that to achieve anything in life, you have to be good at selling. You have to be good at selling yourself, your ideas and the products/services of your company. For example, if you want to land a job in a top company, having a great resume and top grades is not enough. Ultimately, it is all about the interview! 115 What’s An Interview? An interview is a sales pitch. You have usually less than 20 minutes to sell yourself and your ideas to your employer. You have to convince the interviewer why YOU are the best choice compared to the many others who will be competing for the position. If you don’t have the ability to do so, the best written resume and all the years of experience will not get you the opportunity you have been looking for. The same thing goes if you want to climb up the corporate ladder. In the corporate world, it is not always the most loyal, most hardworking and the most deserving who get the promotions and the increments. Again, those who get promoted the fastest and get paid the highest are the ones who know how to sell their ideas and sell themselves to their bosses. They are able to convince their bosses that they deserve to be paid more and are the best people for the top job. I have seen so many hardworking and loyal people get passed up for promotions simply because they lacked the skill to stand up and sell themselves. How To Get Motivated At A Workplace Am I saying that as long as you can sell and talk big, you can get away with almost anything.OF COURSE NOT! You have to be good at your work and deliver what you say you can deliver, If not, great selling will only get you temporary success and eventual, permanent failure. What I am saying is that you have to be able to do great work and offer great value to your customers. However, if you do not have the skills to sell what is good, then you will never get the results you want. If you want to succeed in business, you have to be great in sales as well. In fact, the boss of a company has got to be great at selling his vision to his employees, selling his company to investors and selling his products to customers. Whenever I ask people whether McDonald’s or Burger King has the best tasting burgers, I usually get the majority agreeing that Burger King has better tasting burgers. So, why is it that McDonald’s in 100 times more successful than Burger King? ....................................................................... ....................................................................... 117 ....................................................................... ....................................................................... The reason is because the founder and first CEO of McDonald’s (Ray Kroc) was a great salesman and the founder of Burger King was not. Before Ray Kroc created the McDonald’s franchise, he was a top salesperson, selling milkshake makers to restaurants all over the US. It is this sales culture that all McDonald’s employees are trained in that has made McDonald’s the most successful franchise in the world. Have you ever realized that whenever you order to cheeseburger from McDonald’s, they don’t reply by saying, ‘okay. That will be $x.’ Instead, they follow up with the question, ‘would you like to have a meal with that?’ Then comes the question, ‘Upsize? How about dessert? They artfully sell and sell until they maximize their profits and the customers gets the maximum value. It’s a win win. The same thing goes in politics. You don’t have to be the smartest, most experienced How To Get Motivated At A Workplace nor most intelligent person to become elected President of the United States. You have to be the country’s greatest salesperson! Barack Obama is not the most intelligent guy in the US with the highest credentials. They are millions of Americans who have superior IQs with multiple PhDs. He is certainly not the most experienced. His vice-president, Joe Biden and his contenders, John McCain and Hillary Clinton have decades more experience than him. So, why is Obama the President? ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... Again, it’s because he is the much better salesman! He was able to sell his dream to the American people and sell himself as the best person for the job. If you want to attract the man/woman of our dreams, don’t you have to be great at selling as well? ....................................................................... ....................................................................... 119 ....................................................................... ....................................................................... When you went out on dates, those were all sales pitches weren’t they? ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... If you succeeded in selling yourself as their life partner, then you closed the sale! Some people unfortunately never seem to be able to close the sale. Then there are those that close the sale and are asked for a refund later (this is my feeble attempt at humour). Why Most People Are Lousy At Selling? ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... I have to admit that in the past, I felt very uncomfortable with selling. I did not have a good impression of ‘salespeople’ and felt uneasy asking people to buy things and to How To Get Motivated At A Workplace hand over their money. I also felt ‘pai seh’ (embarrassed) telling people my strengths. I find this very common among fellow African. Our African upbringing has programmed us to feel uncomfortable with standing out and selling ourselves. When we are young, we are told not to show off and act smart. At the same time, the education system we goes through teaches us almost everything expect the skill of selling. In fact, I have found that the more academically educated that people get, the more self conscious they get, the more they fear rejection (and feel they have something to lose) and the less they are able to sell. Then, I came to realize that as long as I was uncomfortable with selling and could not sell well, I could never be successful and wealthy. I had brilliant ideas and a well written book (‘Qualities Of A Leader!’the first book I wrote on how to be a top Quality Leader). I also knew all the strategies of how to become a top Leader. However, as long as I could not stand in front of people and sell them my ideas and products well, nobody would ever be convinced to buy my book or sign up for my programmes. 121 I read of many brilliant academics/creators who developed fantastic ideas and products but never got the success they deserved, simply because they could not sell it well. For example, many people know of the world famous Anthony Robbins who has made millions by teaching millions of people to change their mindset and their lives using life changing techniques like NLP which Tony started with). However, do you know that Tony Robbins DID NOT invent NLP. Tony does not even have a degree (he was a high school dropout). NLP was actually invented by Dr. Richard Bandler, the true genius of human change technologies. So how come very few people have heard of Dr. Bandler and almost everyone knows Tony Robbins? ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... ....................................................................... Again, it is because Tony Robbins is a master salesman who was able to convince millions to buy his program his ideas so well. How To Get Motivated At A Workplace To cite even another example, McDonald’s was a restaurant that was actually created by the McDonald’s brothers. The brothers were great cooks who developed the famous French fries and Big Mac. Yet, they never become rich or successful. They did not know how to sell their great idea to the world. It was Ray Kroc (45 year old salesmen) who saw the potential, bought the rights from the brothers and through his selling skills, turned this little restaurant in California into a billion dollar business with restaurants all over the world. You can have all the talent, all the knowledge, all the education. If you cannot sell it, you cannot make anything of it. Realizing this, I decided to master the skill of selling! Before that, I had to change the negative perceptions I had towards selling. Like I mentioned, I used to feel uncomfortable asking people to buy something and to pay money for it. Then, I came to realize that when you sell something that will truly add value and benefit a person, you are actually doing that person a favour. There is NOTHING to feel uncomfortable about. In fact, you should feel really proud. 123 I came to realize that when someone pays to attend my books and Live Your Dream program, the knowledge and skills they will attain will help them make 100 times that about, for the rest of their lives! By studying and mastering NLP techniques, reading sales books and attending many sales programmes, I honed my selling skills and used it to turn my ideas into dollars a year, business today with 26 best-selling books under my belt and published over 300 Books for other authors! 3. "Do what you love. Love what you do." Work, like anything else has two faces. You can enjoy it. Or you can be burdened by it. Happiness and contentment is not about what life provides for you. It is about how you utilize and react on what life offers. 3.”You can't change the course of the wind. But you can adjust the sail to reach your destination." More often than not we put the blame on others. We think that we did perfect and the problem is with the people around us. This may or may not be true. It is not all the time that we have nothing or little to do with the problem. 4. Go back to number one. Rearrange your priority. If you have already tried your best to suit with the surrounding but your efforts seem futile, it might be the time to look for another opportunity. If you think you can't gain anything from the company/organization you are working now, or it is not worth your time and talent then move on. We can only live life once so enjoy it!
