How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
INTRODUCTION
M
ost of the people today are angry and
bitter about something, they complain
almost about anything. World renowned
motivational speaker Les Brown says that there
is a record that most heart attacks happen
between 07:00am and 08:00am in the morning
because people are going to jobs they don’t like or
jobs they hate.
This book will help you overcome your fears, it
will inspire you, it will guide you, it will motivate
you to a point where you start loving whatever it
is that you do so that you start doing it with
tenacity, zeal, passion, love and dream of what
you do best.
In life there is a time for everything, there a time
to be born and a time to die. In every person’s life
there is a waiting period or a life span. Most
people start school and finish school between the
age of 5 and 20, then advance in their careers, for
some that have families that can afford, go into
5
college or universities after school. But for most
average people, just after finishing secondary or
high school, they go straight into the job market
to find a job to help their families and also be
able to pay for their tertiary education.
Once they start work, most people find that the
job they find, they do not even like it, but
nevertheless they just endure it because they
have bills to pay and their attitude towards their
job become negative.
A Bad att
attitude
ttitude can sabotage your career because
you start complaining about your job, you start
coming in late, hate your boss for nothing, and
hate those around your office who are being
promoted because of their dedication and
diligence.
A Bad attitude toward your job brings in
bitterness. In the bible there is a story of a widow
who had lost her husband and children, her
name was Naomi which means JOY. Because she
was bitter for her loss she decided to move from
Moab to Bethlehem and there, she said call me
Marah (which means Bitterness). You don’t have
to change your name because of the
circumstances you are in today, hold on to your
dream.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
Bitterness is a bad nasty attitude that only sees
negative things and forgets the positive things
.You can be bitter in life and be a good person
too. There are people that are bitter and they
complain and find faults in anything that you do
whether good or bad. Most people today have
destroyed their careers because of their own
attitude towards a job. It’s their fault and they
don’t even know about it. Bitter people always
blame somebody else for their problems.
There is a call for action, you have prayed,
fasted, waited for too long, its time to take action
and make that step towards a positive attitude.
This book is for those that are saying enough is
enough; I want to change my life, my attitude
and get a career motivation because I believe
that all things are possible to them that believe.
Instead of being bitter you can choose to become
better by changing your attitude and knowing
the WHY for your living.

developing a positive attitude, serving others, and asking
God for the strength and wisdom to set and accomplish

as an individual.

F
or some time now, many people say that
they are in wrong careers because they did
not have powerful career guidance from
parents and schools they attended. As I was
writing this book I interviewed a few people and
70% said that they hated their jobs, the only
motivation was that they got a salary at the end
of the month to sustain them and pay bills.
I discovered that many young men and woman
are in careers chosen for them by their parents or
guardians as such, even though they can earn a
lot of money and be in high positions of office;
there is still a void in most young people. There
is always a void in the area of job satisfaction
because the career they wanted was never
attained. It is important that if you are in such a
situation you make a decision to either start
studying towards the career of your passion and
dream or do all you can to just accept what you
have and be motivated to start loving the Job you
are in.
What is Motivation?
Motivation is derived from the word MOTIVE
which means drive, wants, desire within
individuals. Motivation is a desire to a goal,
combined with energy to work towards that Goal.
11
Motivation is also a driving force or a reason for
exhibiting a particular kind of behaviour called
human behaviour.
In the workplace environment, there is need to
motivate staff not only with benefits in terms of a
salary, but also with training and mentorship
that institute a physiological feature that arouses
an individual to action towards a desired goal.
Andrew Carnegie said it best with his quote
“People who are unable to motivate themselves
must be content with mediocrity, no matter how
impressive their other talents.” Self-motivation is
an essential part of excelling at life. You must
learn to motivate yourself because you cannot
depend on others to do it for you. You have to
know how to encourage yourself regardless of
how bad the situation.

How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
There are times when you may need motivation
to get motivated. Positive thinking may not be
doing the trick. What should you do? Consider
these suggestions:
-
Write down your plan for improvement.
Briefly think about your past successes.
Read books that promote self-motivation.
Do you know what motivates you?

Most of us believe that the only reason or
motivation as to why we work is to be paid a
salary to enable us pay bills. But money alone is
not the only motivation one needs; there are lot
of people with high paying jobs who are unhappy
13
with their jobs and do not have that sense and
the feeling of fulfilment.
The following are some of the areas that can help
you love your job and get motivated in your
current situation.
Independence
Most people feel comfortable working on their
own independently and the opportunity to be
their own boss that motivates them.

People feel motivated if they are awarded some
form of recognition at their work place with
things like worker of the month, best dressed
guy. I remember in 2007 I received an award as
the best dressed guy at the company I was
working for and that motivated other work
colleagues to start dressing up nicely.
Achievement
Every worker has an assignment and the feeling
of accomplishing a task though through certain
obstacles usually motivates people to work hard
after receiving a compliment from their boss
(Well done John, for this an excellent job, keeps
it up).
Is your performance relative to your efforts?

Power
There is a certain African leader who once
confessed that power is sweet. It is every workers
desire to be the boss one day and be in the seat of
power in a workplace.
The sense of total control that you have over your
destiny and the power to influence others achieve
a desired objective usually motivates people.
Some times as a boss, if you want to motivate
staff, try giving them a day to act as a supervisor
or give them more responsibilities where they
lead a project and see their commitment to their
job afterwards.
Money
This is usually the financial income an employee
gets as a reward for the work they do for an
organisation.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
Money is a key motivator for any employee and
the question is are you happy with what you are
earning now?

There is need for employers to seriously set up
mentorship programs in the area of Financial
Education. A lot of employees are in debt due to
lack of knowledge in this area of managing
finances and the end result is that this affects
their general performance at work.
A lot of stress by employees has nothing to do
with the job or happiness at their workplace; it’s
got to do with DEBT. Most of them have marital
problems due to debt and as a result that affects
their productivity at work.
There is also need to set up a debt counselling
program in organisations to help and teach
employees ways and methods of coming out of
debt once they are in the web.
If you are in debt right now, swallow your pride
and approach a debt counsel and your life will
17
never be stressful in the area of finance again.
There is always a solution and a way to any
problem.
Pressure
Pressure usually comes due to continued demand
to improve work performance in order to meet
the set deadlines of any assignment. Employees
need to put more effort and be motivated by their
supervisors that they can do better not just being
condemned as poor performers.
Types of Pressure:
1. Good Pressure: This type of pressure is as
a result of an aggressive yet non-critical
and non-harmful atmosphere. One aspires
to be like the people around them. This
motivation leads to the acquisition of selfregulation.
2. Bad Pressure: Bad pressure is when the
atmosphere is critical and harmful. One
has no motivation and loses selfregulation.
3. No Pressure: When one is not experiencing
any pressure, they tend to act based on

emotion, since there is no one to compare
themselves to.
Do you feel you are not exerting much effort?

performance?

Family Life
Family life has a very great impact and plays a
major role on an employee’s performance. If a
married employee is going through marital
issues at home, it usually affects performance.
Encourage employees to have enough time with
their families and once in a while organise maybe
19
a company picnic where you allow staff members
to bring their families and children.
Do you spend enough time with your spouse?

Security
A Job for many is a security to have constant
supply of income to manage their day to day life
and pay school fees, buy food and pay for shelter.
Some jobs come with additional benefits such as
pension, provident fund, funeral policy , medical
air, car allowances and cell phone allowance
which helps employees in case of an eventualities
in life during their career.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
It’s been proved that some people can stay in one
organisation for 50 years just because they feel a
sense of security due to good employment
benefits mentioned above (Pension).

Personal Development
The feeling of growing to become efficient,
competent and a better person is very important
for any employee.
There is only 20% of influence that comes from
others that can hinder your personal
development.
Let’s look at some of the
hindrances:
1. Your Personality plays about 80% towards
your success. A good personality will
always attract favour and recognition in a
workplace, while a bad personality can get
you fired. Personality encompasses a
number of characteristics that arise from
within an individual.
2. Your Temperament – Sometimes your
temperament can hinder your promotion.
In psychology, temperament refers to
those
aspects
of
an
individual's
personality, such as introversion (These
aren't simply shy people, although
certainly many are shy. They also are not
simply depressed individuals, although
introverts just as extraverts can be
depressed. And they aren't all social
outcasts, although it may appear this way
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
to the extraverts who need that ongoing
social contact to be healthy and happy.
Introversion is not a pathological
condition; it is not an abnormal response
to the world. It is simply a personality
trait found in a small percentage of the
or
extroversion
total
population)
(Extroverts tend to "fade" when alone and
can easily become bored without other
people around. When given the chance, an
extrovert will talk with someone else
rather than sit alone and think. In fact,
extroverts tend to think as they speak,
unlike introverts who are far more likely
to think before they speak. Extroverts
often think well when they are talking.
Concepts just don't seem real to them
unless they can talk about them; reflecting
on them isn't enough), that are often
regarded as innate rather than learned.
There are four types of temperaments.
Each of the four types of humours
corresponded to a different personality
type.
Sanguine
The Sanguine temperament personality is
fairly extroverted. People of a sanguine
23
temperament tend to enjoy social
gatherings, making new friends and tend
to be quite loud. They are usually quite
creative and often daydream. However,
some alone time is crucial for those of this
temperament. Sanguine can also mean
very
sensitive,
compassionate
and
thoughtful.
Sanguine
personalities
generally struggle with following tasks all
the way through, are chronically late, and
tend to be forgetful and sometimes a little
sarcastic. Often, when pursuing a new
hobby, interest is lost quickly when it
ceases to be engaging or fun. They are very
much people persons. They are talkative
and not shy. Sanguine can be sometimes
emotional.
Choleric
A person who is choleric is a do-er. They
have a lot of ambition, energy, and
passion, and try to instil it in others. They
can
dominate
people
of
other
temperaments,
especially
phlegmatic
types. Many great charismatic military
and political figures were cholerics. They
like to be leaders and in charge of
everything.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
Melancholic
A person who is a thoughtful ponderer has
a melancholic disposition. Often very
considerate and get rather worried when
they could not be on time for events,
melancholic’s can be highly creative in
activities such as poetry and art - and can
become occupied with the tragedy and
cruelty in the world.
A melancholic is also often a perfectionist.
They
are
often
self-reliant
and
independent; one negative part of being a
melancholic is sometimes they can get so
involved in what they are doing they forget
to think of others.
Phlegmatic
Phlegmatics tend to be self-content and
kind. They can be very accepting and
affectionate. They may be very receptive
and shy and often prefer stability to
uncertainty and change. They are very
consistent, relaxed, calm, rational, curious,
and observant, making them good
administrators. However they can also be
very passive-aggressive.
25
3. Your Skill - A skill is the learned capacity
to carry out pre-determined results often
with the minimum outlay of time, energy,
or both. Skill can either help you or hinder
your personal growth. Your gifts and
talent will make room for you and make
you stand before great men.
4. Your Ability to do something brings up
personal growth. There are two most
important abilities :
1. Intellectual Abilities
That requires doing mental activities. Intellectual
ability commonly refers to the ability measured
by performance on an intelligence test.
2. Physical Abilities
These require doing tasks demanding stamina,
dexterity, strength, and similar characteristics.
5. Your Habit - Habits are routines of
behaviour that are repeated regularly and
tend to occur subconsciously .There are
good and bad habits .The good habits you
do daily can brighten your future success.
Good habits always bring up a good
successful future. Bad behaviour always
hinders success. Habit triggers, needs,

6. Your Attitude can put food on the table or
remove food from your table. Attitude can
make you stay in the game until the end or
quit along the way. Most of the times when
you go for an interview the employers are
not look at your qualifications, but
checking out your attitude and the way
you answer the questions. Bad Attitude
makes one think with negative emotions
and can cause one to make bad decisions.
Negative attitude makes people give
excuses and become arrogant.
7. Your Education also plays a part
sometimes for your promotion and the
position of office they grant you. Education
is the process of learning and acquiring
information. It’s been documented that
58% of people who leave school never read
a book in their life time and 10% of them
read and are usually abreast with what’s
happening around them. Don’t retire your
mind, study towards a career that will
bring your personal growth. Education in
the largest sense is any act or experience
that has a formative effect on the mind,
27
character or
individual.

ability
of
an
8. Your Experience - Experience refers to the
nature of the events someone or something
has undergone. Experience as a general
concept comprises knowledge of or skill in
or observation of something or some event
gained through involvement in or
exposure. Your negative experiences in life
should not let you close down and hinder
your success.
9. Surrender your life to success.
Anything you want to become has to do with your
decision. You need to move from slow down to
success.
During my time as an employee, I got motivated
in personal development by attending workshops,
seminars and training in areas I needed
improvement. I would recommend that you put
some keen interest in attending in house training
programs as that even puts you at an advantage
when it comes to apply for senior positions in
other departments.
Do you think you have grown in your present job?

A few years ago I was watching a motivational
talk by world renowned motivational speaker Zig
Ziglar. He was narrating a story of a lady who
went to him after one of his talks and complained
about her job, her boss, the system and the work
colleagues she was working with. He listened to
her and told her that in fact he had news for her
that she was going to be fired. Her face turned
red, “why would they fire me? I’m a hard
worker.” She responded. Then he told her that if
she continued with complaining she would
definitely get fired.
You might be in the same boat right now where

headaches from nowhere, you complain about

your answers
answers loudly and stick them
them in

What Is A Goal Setting?
Setting?
Goal setting in broad terms is the process of
deciding on something you want, planning how to
get it, and then working towards the objective.
Goal setting is not wishing or dreaming. It is
something that is progressively worked towards.
Goal setting is a process, it is not something that
decided on a whim.
An example is when you want to go on a summer
holiday:
You decide where you want to go to.
You make the reservations.
You get the car ready.
And then the day arrives. Car packed, you depart
on your journey, and keep going, until... You
arrive at your destination - and enjoy!

Power Of The Tongue
Y
ou are like a magnet and you have the
power to attract positive things and people
or repel negative things and people in your
life by the words you speak. A magnet has what
is called a magnetic field around it and it attracts
to itself metal objects within the magnetic field.
Your attitude towards your work colleagues can
either attract then to you or repel them from you
by the words you speak.
Life and death are in the power of your tongue,
what you say is what you get and what you are is
what you say. Many relationships, marriages
careers and friendships have been destroyed
because of the power of a negative tongue. Some
People are so wicked that they can twist
information and get someone fired from a job.
There are people that just attract negative things
to happen. In the work place you find people that
are so negative to a large extent that if they went
in a dark room they can even develop into a
negative photo. Office Gossipers attract people
that also have a gossiping habit and in most
cases gossipers are a source of office rumours,
confusion, division, strife, stress, depression and
loss of interest in a job one once loved so much.
45
Gossipers in work places are usually boot lickers,
who watch like a gate keeper all the activities of
other work colleagues and later report their
twisted obsavertion to their bosses. There are a
lot of fake smiles and ivory teeth in the
workplace, trust no man, just do your job with
excellence and diligence.
Gossipers are very unproductive people; they
spend time on the phone reporting others and
back stabbing others. They spend time watching
what other work colleagues are doing, what
others are wearing, condemn other people’s
walking style and when they hear people talking
they come closer so that they can hear what is
being said. In the end they wonder why
promotion takes forever to come to them. They
develop a negative attitude and also can pollute
the workplace atmosphere with spoken words of
rumours
that
brings
bitterness
and
unproductively.
As a boss be careful for such people because they
can even go to the Managing Director and also
inform him of the things they see wrong in you as
a departmental boss.
Gossipers in the workplace have a habit of
befriending everyone in the office including all
bosses and want to be seen as good doers. In
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
Most cases they want to be in the fore front of
arranging and event taking place in the office
such as birthdays, casual day, funerals with a
motive that they be noticed by the bosses and
some pretend to know all the work that everyone
does in the department they are in.
I once worked with one lady who was very good,
doing good things, a wicked nasty Gossiper and
private eye or office FBI for the boss. She was a
hyena and boot licker in a sheep skin. Whenever
new people joined the department, she would
offer to train them and then report to the boss
that the person was a poor learner. She was a
friend to every boss and spent most of her work
time on doors of bosses and in their offices
reporting others and sweet talking them with an
ulterior motive for promotion. I’m sure you are
family with such kind of people, stay away from
them and never tell them anything about your
personal life and your goals.
Solution
1. Don’t be in the company of office gossipers,
avoid them at all cost and don’t engage
yourself in discussions that don’t build
your career.

2. Choose your work relationships wisely. If
you want to be wise, be in company with

your career.
3. Rebuke those that speak negatively about
other workmates.
4. Be alert and do the best you can and do
not be a listener to gossip.
5. Focus on your career goals and only speak
positive things about your goals.
6. Be a reconciler not a gossiper.

what you love will make you happy,
productive and fulfilled.
22. Write down your career goals and read
them three times a day and declare that
they will be fulfilled and come to pass.
23. Stop blaming everyone for the problems
you have, but focus on being a problem
solver. The reason you are employed by
your boss is because he or she saw that
you have the potential to solve problems in
your current position. The reward for
solving problems in your workplace is your
salary given to you at the end of the

Tips On How To Please Your
Boss In Any Organisation
It is quiet sad that some employees think that
the only way to please their boss is by being a spy
in the workplace and report every activity their
colleagues are doing. A good boss does not
entertain such people but uses wisdom and
professional ethic to monitor and see that all
workers are performing their duties effectively.
Every employee is hired to solve a problem and
there are certain good professional ethical ways
in which one can follow in order to please his or
her boss and get the rewards that every one
craves for, promotion and a salary increase.
1. Be ready to ask questions where you are
not clear in your assignment.
2. Be interested to be your boss’s Protégé and

putting in some over time in your
assignment even if you are not paid but
are able to meet your deadlines.

In addition to doing well at your assigned

supportive of your doing the new task, and that it
won't compromise your productivity in your
primary responsibilities.)
7. Check In With Your
Your Boss Regularly.
Regularly.
In the first week, check in for a few minutes each
day or two with your boss. (Depending on the
culture of your company, these might be
scheduled meetings or informal conversations.)
This is a time for you to ask questions, and get
your boss' feedback on what you have been doing.
These meetings give you critical information
about your performance early on. You can find
out if you are performing according to
expectations, or if there are any changes your
boss would like to see you make in what you are
doing or how you are doing it. (Most employees
do not initiate getting this type of feedback, so
you will stand out by soliciting information on
how to improve your performance.)
In the first month or two, check in at least
weekly for a few minutes to make sure you
understand his or her priorities for your tasks
and performance as well as to ask any questions
that you may have. After this, checking in every
couple of months will help you know how you are
doing and whether you should make any
adjustments in your work.

8. Study Your Boss.
Boss.
Get to know his or her preferences and
personality. For example, does he like to make
small talk before diving into a business
discussion, or consider it a waste of time and
prefer getting right to the point? If you tailor
your interactions to his or her preferred
communication and work style, you will be
viewed more positively.
9. Get to Know The Organization Well Before

Proceed cautiously when you see things that you
think should be done differently. Before voicing
your opinion, ask questions and listen carefully.
Find out why something's been done in a

Help You Master The Art Of
SelfSelf-Management.
Be Consistent. Part of managing oneself is the
ability to be stable. The values you hold dear
should always be transparent. Always changing
can not only cause others to question your beliefs,
but it can also cause you to become confused
about what you truly believe.
Stick To
To The Plan.
Plan. If you are scheduled to
complete a particular task, do it. Don’t just do it,
but make sure it is done in a timely manner. It is
easy to feel out of control when you disregard the
plan you are to follow.
Be Accountable.
Accountable. There are times when things
don’t work out as you plan, but you have to be
able to admit that and then use your flexibility to
get things back on track. The ideal result is that
you easily bounce back and complete the task,
but even during those times when this is not the
case, you are expected to adjust.
Educate Yourself.
Yourself. We live in an ever-changing
world and you want to be able to keep up with it.
Don’t let change pass you by, embrace it. Be an
67
avid reader. Talk and listen to mentors and
peers. They may know something that could help
you along your journey.
Stay Physically Fit.
Fit. Many people don’t think of
staying fit when they talk about selfmanagement, but it is a very important part of
being able to practice the four preceding points.
Exercising your body is just as crucial to selfmanagement as exercising your mind. A body
that is not well
Finally, if you are working in a job and want
promotion, the surest way to get it is by giving
more. Employers look favourably on employees
who are innovative and give more than what is
expected of them. An example of this sort of
behaviour is when you have mastered a job; look
for new tasks to do. Also, look for better and
more efficient ways to do things.
Ask yourself and answer the following questions:
1. Do I love what I do?
2. Do I have the talents to succeed at it?
3. Does what I’m doing offer me the potential
to achieve my social and economic goals?

Why Create A Personal
Strategic Plan?
"A
quality life is an example of what can
be accomplished when thoughtful
attention, careful planning, and
purposeful action come together without
compromise."
A well-defined plan, properly executed, is your
meal ticket to success. You significantly increase
the odds of success in any endeavour if you know
who you are, what you want, where you are
going, how you will get there, and what you will
do once you arrive.
Consider these questions:
What makes it possible for a casino to turn a
profit?
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
Do the odds favour the house or the gambler?
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
71
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
Even avid gamblers recognize that the odds
always favour the house. Most of the people
pulling levers, shooting dice, and playing cards
lose most of the time. It's a safe bet that, in the
view of casino managers, you are going to leave
some of your earnings in their hands when you
leave.
It may be something of an exaggeration, but you
could say that when you walk into any casino,
you sport a big "L" for LOSER on your forehead.
Now matter how sexy it appears, a casino is a
competitively hostile environment, with the odds
consistently favouring the house. This ensures
that they win the majority of the time... and you
lose.
The same can be said for your life. Try to achieve
anything without a well-defined plan (even with
a commitment to achieve) and you go in with a
big "L" on your forehead.
The competitive odds are always in favour of the
prepared, the focused, and the committed; they
will outperform, out-hustle, and outplay you.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
Though it may seem like common sense, this
point is often overlooked: your life will not go
according to plan if you do not have a plan.
Far too many people and organizations are
unprepared, undisciplined, and unfocused. And
because they disrespect planning and lack
preparation, discipline, and focus, they will
repeat yesterday's mediocre performance today,
tomorrow and the next day. This self-imposed
purgatory must be stopped, as the consequences
of poor planning are utterly ruthless.
Why not create history rather than repeat it?
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
Why not commit to having the best year of your
life?

Why not create a plan that allows you to
experience exceptional growth?

..................................................................................
Get serious about your life and career; tilt the
odds in your favour for a change. This is all
possible through the discipline of personal
strategic planning.
The accommodation of success is preceded by
long negotiation, made possible by intensive
preparation. In addition to saving you 10 to 1 in
execution, the creation of a personal strategic
plan offers a host of other tasty benefits as well.

prepared with the best information allows
you to create the best strategy.

•
Planning Provides Standards.
Planning helps you size up your
performance and measure your progress.
Evaluating what you expect is more than a
progress check; it's also quality control.
•
Planning Prepares the Planner.
Planner
It takes a good head to determine what
you're going to do and why. And it takes a
strong stomach to stick with decisions
when you hit the inevitable bumps in the
road. Planning teaches you to cultivate
these qualities, so you have a better
chance of succeeding.
•
Planning Reveals Roadblocks.
Roadblocks
Planning provides a reality check on the
good, the bad, and the ugly of achieving a
particular goal. To be forewarned is to be
forearmed, as one way to ensure victory is
to be prepared for challenges and
obstacles, and you do that through
planning.
•
Planning Stimulates Thinking.
Planning provides the stimulation you
need to avoid dead ends and blind alleys.
75
Comprehensive due diligence serves as a
catalyst for new insights and ideas.
•
Planning Fuels Confidence.
Planning helps you to reduce the
paralyzing effect of fear. Planning is the
safety net for your future. Lack of it is like
walking a tightrope with a blindfold on
and no net below.
•
Planning Offers an Exit Plan.
Planning gives you a sneak peek of the
price you must pay for success so you can
determine if it's worth the risk. It serves
as an early warning system, allowing you
to bow out gracefully rather than be
thrown out later on.
The benefits of personal strategic planning sound
almost too good to be true, but this time, the
hype is legitimate. Effective planning allows you
to do things better, faster, and definitely cheaper.
Perfect the use of planning and you will win
many battles by default. Planning means doing
your homework... running twice as fast. A lawyer
works out the opposition's legal arguments. An
entrepreneur puts himself in the shoes of a
contractual partner. The successful negotiator is
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
the confident negotiator, bolstered by advance
knowledge and planning. As you practice and
master planning, it will become second nature.
In every aspect of your professional and personal
lives, the discipline of personal strategic
planning will help you to think critically,
examine your options, and devise a detailed
action plan that will enable you to achieve more
in the next year than you have in the past ten
years combined.
Strategic Life Plan
Your life plan considers all of the different
areas in your life that are important to
you. To maintain a healthy balance, you
should determine your priorities and then
focus on those that are most important to
you. This plan is designed to help you
establish and achieve your life goals.
Step 1:
Establish Your Priorities
List the areas in your life that are very
important to you.
These areas may include your family,
77
career, relationships, health, financial
security, community service, spiritual, and
others.
Once these areas are identified, prioritizes
from most important to least important.
Step 2:
Establish Your Goals
For each of your priorities identified in
Step 1 above, think about where you want
to be in that area of your life in the next
two years, the next five years, and at the
end of your life
Step 3:
Develop Your Action Plan
The writing of a detailed plan is essential
to your success. It is the process you set in
place to get you where you want to be and
help you accomplish your goals. It must be
detailed with complete action steps and
deadlines. Without specific steps and
dates, your chances of implementing your
strategic
life
plan
are
reduced
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
significantly. Actually, without these - all
you have is a wish list - not a plan.
Consider using the SMART Model:
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Attainable
R - Realistic and within a specific
T - Timeframe.
You will need to identify detailed steps for
each one of the “Goals” you wrote in Step 2
above.
You will only start your plan here, but it
must end up as complete as possible.
What gets planned – gets done! It needs to
become a part of the substance of your
daily schedule, and thus, your life (so you
can make your life happen.)
Keep in mind that although writing the
plan is critically important, no part of it is
written in stone - not your purpose, or any
of the goals or steps. Just as in a strategic
plan in business or organizations, things
will change. So it is also in your personal
strategic plan: life intervenes from time to
time, requiring changes in timing, steps,
and resources. Sometimes you might just
79
simply change your mind about a
particular goal, but to get anywhere, you
must start somewhere.
Set Defined Goals
Your Career Goals will relate to what you want
to do with your job or business.
Financial Goals
Goals are how much you want to earn,
the level of assets you want to own, when you
want to retire and how much money you will
have then, etc.
Physical Goals
Goals are those areas you want to
improve you physical appearance or condition.
Mental Goals
Goals covers the gaining of knowledge,
changing attitudes, self improvement and
cultural.
Family and Social Goals
Goals may include education
of the family, your role in the family or
relationships with others, expansion of your
circle of friends, etc.
Goal + Deadline = Success.

WHY
PEOPLE
NEVER
GET RICH
87
Whether it's a full time mom, a
professional athlete at the top of their
game, or the CEO of a multinational
corporation, those who are truly living an
extraordinary life—life on their terms—are
those who know the answers to three
things:
1. What do you really want?
2. What's preventing you from having it?
3. How do you change your life now?
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
Why People Never Get Rich!
Y
ou see, most people go through life with
the victim’s mindset and this prevents
them from ever changing their financial
situation! When they don’t get the results they
want, victims tend to give themselves lots of
excuses like ‘I’m just unlucky’, ‘ I have no
experience’, ‘I’m too old to earn more’, ‘I’m too
young to be rich’, ‘I have no capital’, ‘I was born
poor’ or ‘I’m not a creative person’
The reason all these are lousy excuses is because
we know that there are many examples of people
who have created wealth for themselves, despite
all these perceived disadvantages.
Victims also tend to blame everyone except
themselves. When you ask victims why they are
not rich yet they will say something like, ‘my
boss won’t give me a raise’, ‘I don’t get any
opportunities’, ‘my big family prevents me from
saving money’, ‘the stock market caused me to
lose everything’. And instead of finding a way to
improve and change, victims spend their time
complaining but don’t do anything about it.
The trouble is that when you give yourself
excuses, blame others and whine, it means that
someone else or something else is controlling
89
your life and your (lack of) wealth. Since you
believe that it is not your fault, then you are
powerless to change it. If you have a victim’s
mindset and hold doggedly onto the belief that
external forces are controlling your wealth, then
any wealth strategies you learn will be of no use!
The moment you acknowledge that you create
your own fortune (or lack of it), it means that you
have given yourself the power to start becoming
rich right now. And when you discover the
strategies of wealth creation, you will find that
you can make money at any age, with any
background, with little or no money and in any
economy!
So once you realize that YOU are in control of
your own financial destiny, the next thing you
need to discover are...

Habit of a Millionaire
H
abit 1: Always Exceed Expectation
Self made millionaires always exceed
expectations.
There are three kinds of people at work:
Those who meet expectation, those who exceed
expectation and those who do just what they are
told to do.
People who exceed expectations add value to any
organization wherever they work.
Habit 2: Be Proactive
Don’t just sit and watch things happening – Be
the change you want to see!
Asian currency crisis of Singapore in 1997 hit
many companies every hard. However, CEO Ron
Sim of Osim International (a company that
develops luxury massage chairs) took the
proactive action and entered new markets like
Hong Kong and Taiwan. Result: Profits of Osim
increased!
95
Habit 3: Take 100% Responsibility
Don’t blame your Parents, Government, climate,
society, wife/husband, education or anyone else
please. People who make millions take 100%
ownership of their life.
Habit 4: Delayed Gratification
What if you have a goose which gives a golden
egg each day?
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
Will you be happy on an egg a day or will you try
to open the stomach of goose to get all golden
eggs at once?
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
As a result, there won’t be any egg at all.! There
are lots of years invested by people before they
get an ‘overnight’ success. Invest before you get
returns.
Habit 5: Love What You Do
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
If you don’t find the job you love then love the job
you find! If you love what you are doing, you
don’t have to work another day in your life. If a
person is obsessed with the work he or she is
doing, results are far superior than the person
who is just doing the work for sake of doing it.
Habit 6: Act With Integrity
“What was the key factor leading to your
wealth”?
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
..................................................................................
When this question was asked by Thomas
Stanley, majority of 733 multi-millionaires
responded ‘being honest with people’. Surprising
point: his factor was way ahead of other factors
like ‘making wise investments’, ‘working hard’
and ‘having a competitive spirit’.
Habit 7: Be 100% Committed
Wishing is not enough; a ‘burning disciplined
eager desire’ is needed to achieve results. A
person gets some thing when it becomes an
absolute MUST.
97
Habit 8: Turn Failure
Failure Into Success
“My policy is to learn from the past, focus on the
present, and dream about the future. I’m a firm
believer in learning from adversity. Often the
worst of times can turn to your advantage, my
life is a study of that” – Donald Trump, after
turning around his $935 million debt into a $3.7
billion fortune.
Remember the life story of Mr. Steve Jobs of
Apple Computer?
After learning that latest model of i-phone is
short in the stores and there are some issues
related to i-phone’s latest model, I wondered
about the founder of Apple – Mr. Steve Jobs.
Who is Mr. Jobs – a self-made billionaire?
Another great example that never fails to inspire
me about turning crushing failure into
resounding success is the story of Steve Jobs, the
founder and current CEO of Apple Computers.
Steve co-founded Apple at the age of 21 in 1976.
Within four years, the company was listed on the
stock exchange and Steve was worth US$217
million at the age of 25. As Apple continued its
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
phenomenal growth, it was decided that
professional management had to be hired to run
the huge organization. So in 1983, Steve hired
John Scully to be the CEO. However, within two
years, the CEO and directors at Apple could not
get along with Steve Jobs (he was known to be an
erratic and emotional manager) and stripped him
of all his duties, forcing him to resign from the
very company he founded in failure and disgrace.
To make things worse, Apple sued Steve for
neglecting his duties. While those in the business
world wrote him off, Steve who possessed the
millionaire mindset, took it as a huge learning
experience (millionaire habit and took the
proactive action of starting a new and better
company called NeXT computers. He believed
that he could develop a range of hardware and
software that would be even better than that at
Apple.
Did He
He Succeed?
Unfortunately, NeXT’s hardware division became
a huge failure.
Undaunted, he again took the feedback and went
on to found Pixar Animation Studios, which
became a huge success in creating the
first breakthrough fully digitally animated movie
99
‘Toy Story’. In the meantime, Apple Computer
was on the verge of bankruptcy in 1995 after
suffering from internal mismanagement and lack
of new product innovation. The company
was making losses of $800 million to $1 billion a
year and its share price dropped from a high of
$18 to $3.80. Believing that he could save Apple,
Steve Jobs agreed to return as CEO for a
nominal pay of $1 (he was doing it purely for the
passion). When Steve took over, he fired all the
unproductive executives and spearheaded the
launch of revolutionary products like the iMac,
iPod and iTunes.
The revolutionary operating system (OS) he
developed at NeXT was then evolved into the
highly popular Mac OS X. As a result of these
successful products, Apple turned its $1 billion
loss into $1.3 billion in profits by 2005. Its share
price rose from $3.80 to a high of $75! Looking
back, Steve realized that if he never got fired
from Apple, he would never have founded NeXT
and Pixar Animation. If not for Pixar, he would
not have become a pioneer in digital animation
and if not for NeXT software he developed, Apple
would never have the Mac OS X operating
system that has made Apple a huge success
today. It is for this reason that many millionaires
believe that ‘everything happens for a reason’
and that ‘adversity is often opportunity in
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
disguise’ provided you learn from your
experiences and continue to take consistent
action!

Five Secrets Of How You Can

Millionaire.
1. Set Your Sights On Where You’re
You’re Going.
Have A Vision.
Vision.
101
Think big. And remember that everyone
has to start at the beginning. Even Warren
Buffet had to invest $25 before he could
make $25 billion. Set lofty goals, and then
begin taking small steps to reach them.
2. Educate Yourself.
Yourself.
Read books and magazines. If you don’t
know how to do something, research the
answer. I’m amazed how much of my
financial success is attributable to simply
reading personal finance books. Many of
them say the same things. Once you’ve
read enough of them, the advice begins to
be burned on your brain. Remember:
knowledge is power.
3. Passion
Passion Pays Off.
Off.
Love what you do. When you’re passionate
about your work, you care about the
consequences. “According to research by
Thomas J. Stanley, author of The
Millionaire Mind, over 80 percent of
millionaires say they never would have
been successful if their vocation wasn’t
something they cared about.”
4. Grow Your
Your Money.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
Pay your 10% Tithe first on every income
you get and then another 10% pay yourself
from the 90%. When you are living
paychequepaycheque-toto-paycheque,
paycheque it can be difficult
to look beyond your immediate needs. But
it’s precisely by doing this that you’ll have
the best chance in life for escaping your
circumstances. Squirrel away money for
your retirement, or for other investments
in cd rates, savings accounts or even
money market accounts.
5. No Guts, No
No Glory.
Take risks. I’ve often heard that
successful people are the biggest failures of
all. They’ve failed many times. But they
pick themselves back up and try again.
Most people never try because they’re
afraid
of
the
possible
downsides.
Successful people don’t worry about the
downside — they’re focused on the possible
payoff.
But the biggest secret of all is to stop
spending.
Every millionaire we researched, has one
thing in common: Not a single one spends
needlessly. In a survey that indicates
103
many wealthy people spend money “with a
middle-class mindset”, clipping coupons
and shopping at sales.
The more I learn, the more I believe this to
be the case. Millionaires may have earned
their money through a combination of
discipline and dedication, but it’s their
frugal habits that keep them rich.
May you be the Next Millionaire!

where Mister Ordinary sees failure. The moment
you adopt the beliefs and habits of a millionaire,
your perception of the world will change
completely and you will realize that there are
money-making opportunities everywhere and
everyday around you. Amazingly, these are
opportunities that you were once quite blind to!
Step 2:
Set Clear Financial Goals
Wealth never happens by chance. It always
begins with a clear goal in mind. At one point of
time in their life, millionaires always make a
decision to become rich. However, whenever I ask
107
most people what their financial goals are, I
often get a blank stare. This is a major reason
why they will never achieve any level of wealth
because they have no clue what it is. Unless you
have a specific figure to focus on, you will never
be able to develop a strategy to achieve it.
Step 3:
Create A Financial Plan
Once you have set specific financial targets of
how much you want to earn and how much
money you want to accumulate, you can then
develop an effective plan to achieve it. Goals by
themselves are nothing but pipe dreams. Only
when you create a plan, have you made your goal
a possibility. The moment you start taking action
on your plan, your dream becomes a reality.
Step 4:
Massively Increase Your Income
After developing their financial plan, most people
tend to become initially disheartened. They look
at their plan and realize that with the amount
they are earning and saving right now, it will be
decades before they see any big money.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
It is therefore important that you learn how to
accelerate and turbo-charge your financial plan
by taking steps to massively increasing your
income.
Step 5:
Manage Your Money & Reduce Expenses
Many people think that by increasing their
income, their wealth will automatically increase.
Unfortunately, increasing income is only one side
of the wealth equation. After all, there are people
who earn $3,000 a month who are broke and
there are those who earn $30,000 who are still
broke. The reason is because when we don’t
manage the money we earn, our expenses will
always rise to our level of income, wiping out any
surplus we have!
Step 6:
Grow Your Money at Millionaire Returns
By increasing your income and reducing your
expenses, you will find that you will be able to
accumulate a surplus of funds that you can use to
help you build your fortune. You need to do this
because, no matter how hard you work and save,
you will never be able to create phenomenal
109
wealth unless you learn how to put your money
to work for you. Through the power of
compounding, you will be able to take small sums
of money and build it into huge returns over
time.
Step 7:
Protect Your Fortune
There is no use working hard to build your
personal fortune only to see it all taken away
from you. There are many people who have taken
decades to build their fortune only to see it wiped
out by an accident, unforeseen illness or through
an unexpected lawsuit.
Self-made millionaires engage professionals like
insurance advisors, lawyers and accountants to
help them build a financial fortress so their
wealth is protected from potential creditors,
plaintiffs looking to sue and the government who
may take away a big chunk of your wealth
through a whole range of taxes that you may not
have even heard about.
Habit 8:

If You Want to Succeed in Anything, You
Have to Learn How to Sell I go on to
explain.
Think about it. Isn’t it true that to achieve
anything in life, you have to be good at
selling.
You have to be good at selling yourself,
your ideas and the products/services of
your company. For example, if you want to
land a job in a top company, having a great
resume and top grades is not enough.
Ultimately, it is all about the interview!
115
What’s An Interview?
An interview is a sales pitch. You have
usually less than 20 minutes to sell
yourself and your ideas to your employer.
You have to convince the interviewer why
YOU are the best choice compared to the
many others who will be competing for the
position. If you don’t have the ability to do
so, the best written resume and all the
years of experience will not get you the
opportunity you have been looking for.
The same thing goes if you want to climb
up the corporate ladder. In the corporate
world, it is not always the most loyal, most
hardworking and the most deserving who
get the promotions and the increments.
Again, those who get promoted the fastest
and get paid the highest are the ones who
know how to sell their ideas and sell
themselves to their bosses. They are able
to convince their bosses that they deserve
to be paid more and are the best people for
the top job. I have seen so many
hardworking and loyal people get passed
up for promotions simply because they
lacked the skill to stand up and sell
themselves.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
Am I saying that as long as you can sell
and talk big, you can get away with almost
anything.OF COURSE NOT! You have to
be good at your work and deliver what you
say you can deliver, If not, great selling
will only get you temporary success and
eventual, permanent failure. What I am
saying is that you have to be able to do
great work and offer great value to your
customers. However, if you do not have the
skills to sell what is good, then you will
never get the results you want.
If you want to succeed in business, you
have to be great in sales as well. In fact,
the boss of a company has got to be great
at selling his vision to his employees,
selling his company to investors and
selling his products to customers.
Whenever
I
ask
people
whether
McDonald’s or Burger King has the best
tasting burgers, I usually get the majority
agreeing that Burger King has better
tasting burgers.
So, why is it that McDonald’s in 100 times
more successful than Burger King?
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
117
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
The reason is because the founder and first
CEO of McDonald’s (Ray Kroc) was a great
salesman and the founder of Burger King
was not. Before Ray Kroc created the
McDonald’s franchise, he was a top
salesperson, selling milkshake makers to
restaurants all over the US. It is this sales
culture that all McDonald’s employees are
trained in that has made McDonald’s the
most successful franchise in the world.
Have you ever realized that whenever you
order to cheeseburger from McDonald’s,
they don’t reply by saying, ‘okay. That will
be $x.’ Instead, they follow up with the
question, ‘would you like to have a meal
with that?’
Then comes the question, ‘Upsize?
How about dessert?
They artfully sell and sell until they
maximize their profits and the customers
gets the maximum value. It’s a win win.
The same thing goes in politics. You don’t
have to be the smartest, most experienced
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
nor most intelligent person to become
elected President of the United States. You
have to be the country’s greatest
salesperson! Barack Obama is not the
most intelligent guy in the US with the
highest credentials. They are millions of
Americans who have superior IQs with
multiple PhDs. He is certainly not the
most experienced. His vice-president, Joe
Biden and his contenders, John McCain
and Hillary Clinton have decades more
experience than him. So, why is Obama
the President?
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
Again, it’s because he is the much better
salesman! He was able to sell his dream to
the American people and sell himself as
the best person for the job.
If you want to attract the man/woman of
our dreams, don’t you have to be great at
selling as well?
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
119
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
When you went out on dates, those were
all sales pitches weren’t they?
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
If you succeeded in selling yourself as their
life partner, then you closed the sale! Some
people unfortunately never seem to be able
to close the sale. Then there are those that
close the sale and are asked for a refund
later (this is my feeble attempt at
humour).
Why Most People Are Lousy At Selling?
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
I have to admit that in the past, I felt very
uncomfortable with selling. I did not have
a good impression of ‘salespeople’ and felt
uneasy asking people to buy things and to
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
hand over their money. I also felt ‘pai seh’
(embarrassed) telling people my strengths.
I find this very common among fellow
African. Our African upbringing has
programmed us to feel uncomfortable with
standing out and selling ourselves. When
we are young, we are told not to show off
and act smart.
At the same time, the education system we
goes through teaches us almost everything
expect the skill of selling. In fact, I have
found that the more academically educated
that people get, the more self conscious
they get, the more they fear rejection (and
feel they have something to lose) and the
less they are able to sell.
Then, I came to realize that as long as I
was uncomfortable with selling and could
not sell well, I could never be successful
and wealthy. I had brilliant ideas and a
well written book (‘Qualities Of A Leader!’the first book I wrote on how to be a top
Quality Leader). I also knew all the
strategies of how to become a top Leader.
However, as long as I could not stand in
front of people and sell them my ideas and
products well, nobody would ever be
convinced to buy my book or sign up for my
programmes.
121
I read of many brilliant academics/creators
who developed fantastic ideas and
products but never got the success they
deserved, simply because they could not
sell it well. For example, many people
know of the world famous Anthony
Robbins who has made millions by
teaching millions of people to change their
mindset and their lives using life changing
techniques like NLP which Tony started
with).
However, do you know that Tony Robbins
DID NOT invent NLP. Tony does not even
have a degree (he was a high school
dropout). NLP was actually invented by
Dr. Richard Bandler, the true genius of
human change technologies. So how come
very few people have heard of Dr. Bandler
and almost everyone knows Tony Robbins?
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
.......................................................................
Again, it is because Tony Robbins is a
master salesman who was able to convince
millions to buy his program his ideas so
well.
How To Get Motivated At A Workplace
To cite even another example, McDonald’s
was a restaurant that was actually created
by the McDonald’s brothers. The brothers
were great cooks who developed the
famous French fries and Big Mac. Yet,
they never become rich or successful. They
did not know how to sell their great idea to
the world. It was Ray Kroc (45 year old
salesmen) who saw the potential, bought
the rights from the brothers and through
his selling skills, turned this little
restaurant in California into a billion
dollar business with restaurants all over
the world. You can have all the talent, all
the knowledge, all the education. If you
cannot sell it, you cannot make anything of
it.
Realizing this, I decided to master the skill
of selling! Before that, I had to change the
negative perceptions I had towards selling.
Like I mentioned, I used to feel
uncomfortable asking people to buy
something and to pay money for it. Then, I
came to realize that when you sell
something that will truly add value and
benefit a person, you are actually doing
that person a favour. There is NOTHING
to feel uncomfortable about. In fact, you
should feel really proud.
123
I came to realize that when someone pays
to attend my books and Live Your Dream
program, the knowledge and skills they
will attain will help them make 100 times
that about, for the rest of their lives! By
studying and mastering NLP techniques,
reading sales books and attending many
sales programmes, I honed my selling
skills and used it to turn my ideas into
dollars a year, business today with 26
best-selling books under my belt and
published over 300 Books for other
authors!

FINAL THOUGHTS
1. Know and rearrange your priority/goals.
2. "Do what you love. Love what you do." Work,
like anything else has two faces. You can enjoy it.
Or you can be burdened by it. Happiness and
contentment is not about what life provides for
you. It is about how you utilize and react on what
life offers.
3.”You can't change the course of the wind. But
you can adjust the sail to reach your destination."
More often than not we put the blame on others.
We think that we did perfect and the problem is
with the people around us. This may or may not
be true. It is not all the time that we have nothing
or little to do with the problem.
4. Go back to number one. Rearrange your
priority. If you have already tried your best to suit
with the surrounding but your efforts seem futile,
it might be the time to look for another
opportunity. If you think you can't gain anything
from the company/organization you are working
now, or it is not worth your time and talent then
move on. We can only live life once so enjoy it!
