SO….. Summer Outreach Programme with WP @ GSA Hello…. Welcome to your WP @ GSA Gallery Guidebook…. This booklet is designed to help explore the way you work and how to look at other people’s artwork, and help you to begin to see connections between your work and others. This will be a crucial element in creating your portfolio. It’s a hard task to get a good portfolio ready, you need to put in A LOT of time and effort, so be prepared to do so! Summer Outreach with WP @ GSA 2014 This booklet will help you to… - See at what galleries and exhibitions are available in Glasgow. - Think about questions to ask yourself when visiting these places. - Help you to get the most out of using your sketchbook. Where to go…. Glasgow has a huge amount of galleries and museums to visit - if you are at a loose end one day, or even better make a point of doing it! - go for a walk and have a look in some of the places we suggest - most places are free and open daily. Take your sketchbook and see if anything sparks off your interest…It could be a new exhibition by a contemporary artist, or it could be a stuffed bear in a museum! It doesn’t matter, just get out there and get looking, it will help you make decisions on what you like or don’t like and why. Take notes on what you think, they will come in useful later on. You should also sketch the things you see in galleries that you like! Making these decisions will inform the way that you work when putting together your folio, or may be helpful to you later on – you never know when you will need it. Always keep up-to-date with new places to go and updated hints and tips on our WP webpages: • Info, Advice and Guidance • Getting Creative! Summer Outreach with WP @ GSA 2014 What to see…. It can be quite daunting visiting a gallery or exhibition space sometimes, especially if you have never been there before. Here is our survival guide to help you get the most from your visit… Questions to think about… When visiting the Galleries think about why you are there and write in your sketchbook; What interested you in visiting this particular gallery? What do you think about the work on show? What is your first reaction to the work on show? What do you think the artist is trying to say? Do you enjoying being in the space? What is the building like? Have you read about the artist in the information next to the work? Have you visited it before or not? Has that information helped to inform you about his/her practice? Have you an interest in the artist that is exhibiting? Have your feelings on the work changed after reading this? What do you like about the work? Think about; the scale- is it massive, or tiny? Some online resources: Tate online: www.tate.org.uk/learn/online-resources This site is a fantastic resource to help you to understand more about artists and how the work. It has really interesting videos with artists introducing their work and explaining how they produce it. I also has lots of projects t help you to explore and make your own work. Metropolitan museum of Art online: http://www.metmuseum.org/learn/forteens This site is great for learning about what is going on in one of the world’s most amazing museums (without jumping on the jet to New York!) It has really interesting blogs from teenagers talking about art and their experiences. Have a look and maybe even join in! Smart History: http://smarthistory.khanacademy.org/ This is a great site to help you to learn about the different periods in art – because let’s face it, sometimes it can be pretty hard to grasp and remember everything. It provides a good clear explanation of different styles throughout time with videos and essays. Summer Outreach with WP @ GSA 2014 What else? Continued….
