Bruce is 87 now and living with his son in Brampton. Although he’s no longer hiking, he is still very active. Two mornings a week he drives himself on the 407 (over an hour each way) to the Air Force Museum in Hamilton to volunteer. As a veteran and a member of the Bomber Command Association he must bring a wealth of expertise to his duties. Bruce has been in Brampton for almost two years but his heart is still in Sarnia. He keeps himself busy with searching the internet, caring for Cheena (the dog he and Mary had) and the volunteering and is thinking of joining the local woodcarvers club. Bruce still receives the LOC newsletter and reads our activities to keep in touch. I’m sure Bruce would love to hear from some of his fellow members. If you would like to call Bruce or send an e-mail, don’t hesitate to contact me. Those of us who were fortunate to attend the New Year’s Day Social are aware that member, Roy Ballard, fell while on the Tortoise Hike. Because of a deep gash in his hand and no vehicle available, an ambulance was called. We’re happy to report that Roy was able to return to the event after a short visit to ER. Although shaken, and a few pains for a week or so, Roy’s hand was completely healed quickly. Helen and Roy would like to express their thanks to their fellow members for their “due diligence” by applying pressure to the site and quickly calling an ambulance. The incident did bring to light that none of the hiking groups that day had the required safety First Aid Kit for the activity. Fortunately one hiker in the Tortoise group had his cell phone. President Barb Batson ~ 337-3454 Vice President Yahya Hematy ~ 542-3217 Acting Past President Rod Richmond ~ 704-1113 Secretary Joanne West ~ 331-4072 Treasurer Tony Abbott ~ 542-6273 Newsletter Contributions The Lambton Outdoor Club newsletter is published four times per year and distributed to paid up members as well as other clubs, organizations and some commercial outlets. Contributions are welcome. The editor reserves the right to make changes and use the contributions. Submission Deadlines The Council discussed the incident at their January meeting and would like to remind coordinators that a safety 1st Aid Kit must accompany an LOC activity and that an Incident Report must be completed whenever the safety 1st Aid Kit is opened and an item from it is used. It is also a good idea to have a cell phone with the group if possible. Deadlines for receipt of contributions from members or any committee heads are: Feb 1 • May 1 • Aug 1 • Nov 1 The printed newsletters are usually in the mail within 3 weeks of the deadline. With spring around the corner and our hiking activities about to begin in earnest, I would like to suggest that participants and coordinators refresh their memories with outings guidelines available on the website under “Forms” (Attachments 4, 5 & 6). For those who like whitewater there is the Spanish River and for those who want a more relaxed pace with no portaging there is the lower French River. ~submitted by Brian Seabrook, Chair Whitewater Canoe Trip Spanish River This trip will be held the last week of June or the first week of July. For those who want an exciting week this is for you. The Spanish is a whitewater river west of Sudbury. The rapids are challenging without being overwhelming. The rapids which are linked with sections of flatwater have portages around them so you can scout them out or portage around them if you don’t feel comfortable running them. Doug Winch and Patrick Deery have been down this river a number of times with the Boy Scouts so they are familiar with the trip. They will do an excellent job of organizing this trip. For further information or to sign up please call Doug Winch at: 519-330-4960 Spanish River photos submitted by: 23rd St Bartholomew’s Scout Troop Sarnia Flatwater Canoe Trip Lower French River For those who like a more leisurely pace without being bored, the lower French River will be for you. This is a flat water trip without portages. We will be leaving the weekend of August 13 or 14th and returning the following Friday. Tony Arnold has organized trips on the French in the past and is familiar with the area. The water will be at it’s warmest this time of the year and the bugs should be gone by then. For further information or to sign up please call: Tony Arnold at 519-542-1578 or Brian Seabrook at 519-542-2015 4 Lambton Outdoor Club | Spring 2011 Cycling Report Writing something for the February newsletter is always a tough assignment so far as cycling is concerned because there really is very little going on. However this is the time of year to plan for when the warmer weather does come and the committee has been busy doing just this. We have had one session to review our rides in 2010 – to see which ones are worth repeating, and another to set up a program for the coming year. The result, for the early part of the year, can be seen in the activities schedule. The way it seems to work is that we have a series of perennial favourites that work out well and people look forward to doing each year. We then try to find some new rides to add variety. Rides that do not involve driving somewhere first are always preferred but Sarnia has some significant geographical limitations (that water to the north and west) which severely limit our options. When we do have to drive we try to limit travel time to around an hour. The obvious exceptions are the annual “away” trip we normally have and maybe a weekend trip where we are away overnight. For these, more travelling time is normal and acceptable. This year of course our main away trip involves some serious travel. Organization of the Holland- Belgium trip had to be started around the middle of 2010 and those participating have now booked their flights and accommodation for when they arrive. I think everyone is staying on after the trip itself to take in a little more of Europe -to make sitting in that plane for seven hours or so each way more worthwhile. We did have a gettogether for those on the trip to discuss travel plans and exchange ideas on what else to do while over there. As with all outdoor activities how much we enjoy the trip will depend a great deal on the weather – so if anyone has any influence in Our Season Is Soon Upon Us that department, please use it to drivers are having problems seeing help make sure we have a fine week. through their iced up windshields, hazards to the cyclist must be sigOne item on the schedule for April nificantly increased. It was started off with John Elliott holding a ski wax clinic resulting in 3 more waxing pros. Skimail got its first formal test when 4 members were able to connect with a trip to Canatara Park. This was followed up a few days later with eight enthusiasts heading to the Pinery. By all accounts and pictures (which can be seen on the website) this was a great trip. On the 16th eight ventured to the Circle ‘R’ in Delaware for their annu- al “Moonlight Ski and Chili” dinner. They must have had an excellent ski great chili as they are planning a return trip for the next one coming up Feb 12th. Fern Noel has seven signed for the Killarney ski trip. Staying in yurts will be a new experience and hopefully they will have some interesting tales and pictures. Enjoy. We may not have it all together, butTogether we can have it all We’re still forming up the wagons. The Committee has had its first meeting and have the basic formats worked out. The first two outings have been decided upon and we are looking for good times and constructive feedback. Here’s how it is going to work: The co-ordinator (Wagonmaster) for each outing is the primary contact for the specific trip and will arrange for a number of sites to be put aside for LOC members at the campground. Each potential participant will contact the Wagonmaster. The Wagonmaster will provide the appropriate contact information to the participants The participants will then make their own reservations directly with the campground, on a first come first served basis. to a maximum of ten units or twenty people. We will attempt to have the sites, held as a cluster until 30 days before the intended arrival, after that the campground will release any un-booked sites to the general public. Most of the main activities during the trip will be pre organized by the Wagonmasters and their helpers (this is your chance to get involved by offering to be a helper) Don’t expect the Wagonmasters to do all the work, they deserve to enjoy themselves too.
