PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS
SKI DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Hello MCSC,
It’s early July and our ski trip to Taos is already
sold out! But don’t get discouraged; get your
name on the waiting list since there are always
cancellations on every trip. This trip is being
run by the always fun duo of Jeff and Lori B.
Dates for Taos are March 23rd to March 28th.
If Taos isn’t for you, check out our European
trip to Kitzbuhel, which I also have on sale.
Some of you will remember a day trip to
Kitzbuhel when we were in Innsbruck, the old
city had lots of European charm, the mountain
is huge and “happy houring” at the Londoner
was a crazy experience. I will forever
remember the Austrians standing on chairs
singing to John Denver tunes and drinking beer
out of glass boots! Tony T is running this trip
for us. We’ll be staying at a highly rated four
star hotel just a short walk to the heart of the
old city and the lifts. Please attend the July
10th meeting or meetings afterward for details!
Trip dates are January 12th to January 21st
including a two night extension to Vienna.

Summer is here and I am sure all of you are
finding ways to relax and stay cool. But, if you
are really stumped on what to do…. a great
way to escape from the sweltering heat is to
think about skiing down some powdery trails
and sign up for one of our 2012/2013 Ski
Trips! (See the Ski Director Report for details).
Perhaps you would rather cool down on a
kayak trip with Paul V, or take on the heat with
a beach bike ride with Judee T, then cool down
at the beach. If you haven’t been to the
Jersey Shore yet this year you need to. I don’t
ever remember the ocean being so clear.
Whatever your pleasure, there are many
events and AAF’s being organized for you to
enjoy. Check out the Upcoming Events section
for details so you don’t miss out on the fun. If
there is an event you would like to see on our
calendar, please give us your ideas.
Remember, we only have one meeting in
July (Tuesday the 10th), and then we are back
to two meetings a month in August.
I hope to see many of you at the July
AAF at the Bamboo Grill on Thursday July 26.

come join us for an AAF on Lake Hopatcong.
Happy hour will start at 5 and continue all night
with $1.00 off featured beer of the evening.
There will also be a complimentary appetizer. You
will be able to enjoy these drinks at the bar
overlooking the lake and outside dining area. The
Jefferson House has a full menu for anyone who
wishes to dine there. We will meet at the North
Deck bar.

and enjoy the open-air patio.
Catch up with old and new friends while we
unwind either at the indoor or outdoor bar. We
will have happy hour from 4:00-7:00 with 10%
(about a dollar) off your drinks. You can
purchase appetizers from a select happy hour
menu for ½ price. A full dinner menu is available
for those who wish to dine there. We will be able
to enjoy our drinks and relax to live entertainment
starting around 7:00 with a band named Kootz
that plays modern and old rock-n-roll.
*There is a parking lot at the restaurant as well
but it can get crowded. You might want to
consider carpooling if possible.

Kayaking on the Delaware
River
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL
GAME!!!

Saturday, July 21st
Cedar Rapids Rafting Barryville, New York
Join the Morris County Ski Club for a day of
kayaking on the upper Delaware River. We will be
meeting at the Cedar Rapids Rafting Base in
Barryville, New York where we will be renting
single kayaks. The trip length will be about 8 miles
and the total time will be dependent upon the
weather and water conditions that day. We will
stop along the way for lunch, swimming and
photography. We will finish our day at the Cedar
Rapids bar/restaurant which overlooks the river.
Cost: $45- Includes kayaks, paddles, life jackets,
local transportation (courtesy of Cedar Rapids

You will need to bring:
* Swim wear and a change of clothes. You w ill
get w et.
*Old sneakers, river sandals, or water
sneakers/shoes for kayaking. No flip flops, or
open back shoes.
*Sunscreen and sunglasses.
* A small cooler containing your lunch packed in
zip lock bags
* Bungee cords for securing your cooler to the
kayak
* NO GLASS containers on the river,
* No previous kayaking experience is necessary.
Please join the Morris County Ski Club on
Saturday, July 21st at 1:10 p.m. to watch the NY
Mets battle it out against the LA Dodgers at Citi
Field. This is a special event, marking Citi Field’s
1st Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day. Tickets are
$40 and a portion of proceeds goes towards
promoting ovarian cancer awareness. The seats
are in the Pepsi Porch section located in right
field.
As a very special treat, our former MCSC
President Lisa Galley will be singing the National
Anthem!
Show your support for the battle against Ovarian
Cancer, T.E.A.L. (“Tell Every Amazing Lady”
about Ovarian Cancer) and wear something teal to
the game.

SOMERSET PATRIOTS GAME
BEACH BIKE RIDE

Join the Morris County Ski Club for
an evening of BBQ and Baseball!
Begin the day with a choice of two bike rides —
15 or 35 miles — riding on flat, lightly-traveled
roads to Allaire State Park (and beyond). We’ll
start and finish at Risden’s Beach & Bath House,
from which there are plenty of options for postride festivities. Once the ride is done we’ll hit the
beach; lunch and boardwalk activities are all within
walking distance from this seaside hot spot.
Risden’s lockers and showers are available for
easy cleanup post-beach (2011 price: $13.00,
which also included a badge for a day on the
beach).
The cost is $25 per person which includes ticket
and barbecue buffet.

Pre-Gam e Picnic Includes: - An all-you-can-eat

Remember that meters are in effect 24/7. All-day
parking in Risden’s lot is about $25.00; if you
arrive early (say 7:30 AM or so), you can find free
parking on the side streets away from the beach.

Thanks to all those who attended and made the
2011-2012 End-of Year-Party a fun filled success.
SPRING HIKES 2012
SEASON END CELEBRATION!

On Saturday night June 2nd over 50 MCSC
members got together for a fun filled End-Of-Year
party at Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown.
The festivities started around 6:00 with cocktails
on the patio overlooking the Spring Brook golf
course.
We were treated to a beautiful and
cool early summer night. As the entertainment for
the evening, the MCSC favorite band “Conflicted”
was just getting started, the crowd began their
assault on the fantastic buffet dinner. From the
salads to the desert tray, or “soup to nuts” as
they say, the food was outstanding.
As everyone finished dinner and before
“Conflicted” could really get the night in full
swing, it was time to make some year-end
presentations. Incoming President Helen
McLaughlin and the new board members thanked
those they replaced with some nice parting gifts.
Long Pond Iron Works Hike

The first spring hike was held on Saturday April
21. We had a sunny and warmer than usual day.
We had a great turn out with 25 people and 2
dogs. The hike started by exploring the remnants
of an old iron works site. This area produced iron
during the Civil War but stopped production in the
1880s. There are still the remnants of furnaces,
water wheels and other structures on the sites.
We then crossed the Greenwood Lake Turnpike
and hiked through the Long Pond Iron Works
State Forest.
The hike was 7 miles long and
a bit on the challenging side. The challenge was
increased by the mild temperatures over 70
degrees. There were two significant climbs on
the hike. One was to our lunch location at the
top of Horse Pond Mountain, which offered a
great view of the Monksville Reservoir. The
second offered a view of the surrounding area
including the old Jungle Habitat tract. After the
hike most of us went to 15 Prime for food and
drinks.
Then it was time to announce the MCSC
Member of the Year award. Drum roll please…..
Congratulations to Lisa Margolis!!! Thanks for all
your hard work on behalf of MCSC and in making
the AAfs an event everyone looks forward to
attending every month. In addition, Lisa is taking
on the role of Secretary this year. Congratulations
and good luck in your new post.
With the formalities out of the way it was
time for “Conflicted” to crank up the volume and
open up the dance floor, and that’s exactly what
happened. The dancing started and didn’t end
until “Conflicted” finished up around 11:00 PM…

Wanaque Ridge Hike
The second spring hike was held on Saturday June
9. The day was a bit on the humid side but
fortunately the clouds kept the temperature
down. We had 17 people and one dog meet at
Back Beach Park to start the hike. We started by
hiking the Indian Rock Trail to the Wanaque Ridge
Trail which offers some great views of the
Wanaque Reservoir. This hike had one significant
climb which was to the ruins of a mansion built in
1910. We had lunch up on along the Castle Point
trail and enjoyed the views.
The hike out
was much easier as we hiked along the shoreline
of Ramapo Lake. The total hiking distance was
about 6 miles and this hike was significantly
easier than the Long Pond Iron Work hike. After
the hike we went to Thatcher McGhee’s in
Pompton Lakes for food and drink.
Skydiving Follow-up
The following photo was previously unavailable
until this issue of Ski Tales. The photo shows Jeff
B. experiencing the rush of adrenaline during a
recent skydiving trip in May.
