In just three years, we have expanded from one station to 62 in Mindanao by the end of June 2008. Our growth has been phenomenal. Every year has been a milestone year, and the big strides we have made as a local petroleum company is due to the hard work and focus of everyone who makes up Team Phoenix – the directors, management, staff, suppliers, and business partners. In this first issue of SOAR, we review our accomplishments and activities on the first half of the year. We also feature a story on how Phoenix helps the lives of our customers, an inspiring reminder that what we do contributes to the community. The certification, dated February 1, 2008, covers the Phoenix Bulk Depot in Lanang, Davao City. Phoenix started the ISO 9001:2000 accreditation in June 2007 for its Davao bulk plant and aviation fuel tank truck operations. ISO 9001:2000, which gives the requirements for quality management systems, is firmly established as the globally implemented standard for providing assurance about the ability to satisfy quality requirements and to enhance customer satisfaction in supplier-customer relationships. Phoenix launches Employee Awards PPPI formally launched on May the Phoenix Employee Awards called The Phoenix of Performance – Recognition for Outstanding Service and Excellence. This is the first Phoenix Employee Recognition Program that acknowledges and rewards deserving Phoenix employees for their exceptional performance, work ethics and support of the Phoenix Vision, Mission and Core Values. SOAR PHOENIX 3 PHOENIX EVENTS MARCH 14-16 71st Araw ng Dabaw Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc., Davao City’s first homegrown petroleum company, joined the city in celebrating the 71st Araw ng Dabaw. Phoenix was a major sponsor to the festivities. Phoenix also participated in the Sunday parade, the festival highlight, with three fuel tankers and the company’s brandnew fire truck traversing major routes in Davao City. Mutya ng Dabaw 2008 winners 27 Tourism deal with Tagum City Phoenix committed one-million pesos worth of sponsorship to the City Government of Tagum in support of tourism activities. The Memorandum of Agreement was signed in Tagum by City Mayor Rey T. Uy and Phoenix Petroleum Chairman Domingo Uy, and witnessed by Phoenix Corporate Affairs Manager Ben Sur and business partners of Phoenix in Tagum. MAY 10 Blood-letting Phoenix held its first bloodletting activity on May 10 at the Phoenix Bulk Depot in Lanang, Davao City, in coordination with the Philippine National Red Cross. The Phoenix Team was headed by Chairman Domingo Uy and President and CEO Dennis Uy, who was a blood donor himself. In total, Phoenix donated 8,550 cc of blood. 14-15 Motorcross Challenge Approximately 450 cc of blood is donated by each donor. The Red Cross team checks the blood pressure of potential donors. Phoenix co-presented the 2008 Summer Festival of Don Marcelino, a third class municipality from the second district of Davao del Sur. The highlight of the festival was the Extreme Motocross Challenge participated in by national riders, amateur and novice riders from all over the province, from May 14 to 15. The Motocross event in Don Marcelino was a prelude to the soon-to-be constructed Phoenix service station in the municipality. When completed, the Phoenix station will be the only petroleum retail station in the place. The Phoenix Davao team with PPPI Chairman Domingo Uy (center) Don Marcelino is being groomed to be a tourism destination and a potential venue for big events. It is composed of 15 barangays and 166 sitios, bounded on the north by the municipality of Malita, south by the municipality of Jose Abad Santos, east by Davao Gulf, and west by the municipalities of Malapatan and Alabel, Sarangani. SOAR PHOENIX 5 MAY 17-18 18 holes for 1 cause Apex Mines with the support of Phoenix Petroleum and other companies held the 18 Holes for 1 Holy Cause Golf Tournament on May 17 to 18 at the Lanang Golf Club, Davao City. Funds raised will be used for the construction of a new church building for Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish in Masara, Maco, Compostela Valley. A Phoenix service station in the municipality of Compostela, Comval Province is undergoing construction and will soon fuel the lives of the community. 23 CalingAplaya Coastal Cleanup Phoenix Petroleum staff in the Batangas Union Industrial Park (BUIP) in Batangas joined the coastal cleanup of CalingAplaya 2008 in commemoration of Gen. Eleuterio Marasigan Day on May 23 and Barangay Salong Fiesta on May 24. The participation is part of Phoenix’s corporate social responsibility to the environment. Ongoing Technical support to Davao Reyer Starting March 2008, Phoenix Petroleum’s Engineering Group has been providing technical support to Davao Reyer, operator of the Metro Shuttle buses. Phoenix conducted an oil test using Phoenix XHD Extreme 15w-40 API, CH-4 for three buses and equipment monitoring thru progressive (EMPA) at 15,000 km. As part of the program, we provide on loan equipment for the motorpool department. Phoenix provided a used oil analysis interpretation for units identified for random sampling at agreed running hours. The analysis will be submitted as benchmarking of parameters to further assist in the maintenance of the engines. For its maintenance team, Phoenix provided Davao Reyer 43 pairs of cover-all uniforms safety shoes, and rubberized gloves, and 32 safety goggles. 6 SOAR PHOENIX MAY Service Culture Workshop A group from Team Firebird discusses service needs Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. conducted a two-day service culture workshop for staff in four batches in Davao City and Makati from May to June 2008. The workshops were conducted by the Human Resources Department. The workshop aimed to create ownership of and commitment to improved teamwork and customer service, the Phoenix WAY (Willing, Able, Yes we can!). At the end, each team came up with specific action steps necessary to achieve the organization’s desired Customer Service priorities and standards. 25 Everyone signs their commitment to better service Bancarera at Magnaga Phoenix was a product sponsor of the Bancarera contest held on May 25 at the Magnaga Waters Beach Resort in Pantukan, Compostela Valley. Phoenix acquired its own fire truck on March 2008, a conscious move towards being a better corporate citizen and as a part of our social responsibility. The fire truck is primarily a fire protection equipment for company facilities. It can also be used to aid the city's fire department in the event of fires. The fire truck is especially equipped with a foam proportioning system, designed to put out residential and industrial fires. SOAR PHOENIX 7 JUNE 12 Weekly Flag Ceremony Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. observed its first flag ceremony on June 12 in celebration of the 110th Philippine Independence Day. The flag ceremony is observed every Monday at 9 am, with different branch units in charge. Regular activities are singing of the Philippine national anthem; singing of the Phoenix Corporate Song When the Phoenix Flies; presentation of a Phoenix Core Value; Pledge of Service Credo and Service Action Steps; and announcements. The hoisting of the Philippine flag and the Phoenix flag at the Davao Bulk Depot grounds reaffirms the company’s commitment to make “Phoenix Fuels Life” an experience within reach of every Filipino. 24-29 PNXpo: Soaring High Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. held its second annual “PNXpo: Soaring High” from June 24-29 at the Atrium of the Gaisano Mall Davao. The PNXpo was part of the Motorcycle Week activity of the mall. The Phoenix corporate expo had four sections: Fuels PNXpo, Franchise PNXpo, Lubes PNXpo, and Careers PNXpo. Each section presented opportunities for the entrepreneur or jobhunter. The highlight of PNXpo was the Grand Raffle Draw of the Phoenix “Tank-Full of Life: Multi-Caravan of Prizes” promo. Three winners won multi-cabs and hundreds won Phoenix lube cards, fuel cards, and T-shirts in the third and last raffle draw. Team Phoenix at the PNXpo 8 SOAR PHOENIX FEATURE Driver, farmer, pregnant lady win multi-cabs from Phoenix Noel Ogdoc plies the Ma-a to Agdao route everyday as a jeepney driver. For two years now he has been fueling at the Phoenix station in Ma-a Diversion Road, an accessible stop in his route. As a husband and father of two daughters, 45-yearold Noel has difficulty making ends meet. “We are only poor. I don’t even have a cell phone. We sold it already.” Noel was one of thousands who wrote their names in raffle entries for the Phoenix “Tank-Full of Life Multi-Caravan of Prizes” promo. The grand draw was held as the culminating event of the Phoenix Corporate Expo PNXpo at the Gaisano Mall of Davao, June 29. When Noel learned that he won the grand prize of a multicab, he and his family rushed to the mall to claim his prize. When they arrived at the Phoenix booth, he and wife Jonalyn were in tears. “It is my first time to win in a raffle draw. This is a big help to my family,” said Noel. Ellen is eight months pregnant with her and husband Ferdinand’s first child. The couple own a construction and supply company. Ellen dropped her winning coupon in the Phoenix station in Madang, Mati City, when they were on a collection trip in Comval and Davao Oriental. In Davao City where they are based, Ellen and her husband are regular customers of Phoenix Acacia. “The moment the station opened, we don’t miss loading up there because the service is fast and the location is accessible to our route.” Farmer In Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat, farmer Peter Baldonado has been fueling with Phoenix since it opened its station there. Phoenix is the only gas station in the area, a necessary service to Peter and his fellow farmers. Peter has a three-hectare land of rice and corn that they till. The process takes two months, and in those months, the motorcycle and tractor need to load tens of liters per day. The 47-year old farmer supports a wife and three children. The new multi-cab he has won from Phoenix is a big help. “We will make it our service vehicle to buy fuels at Phoenix because right now, we are only using our motorcycle,” he said. “Dako kaayo ni’g tabang kanamo. Salamat kaayo sa Phoenix!” Phoenix gave away a total of three multi-cabs, six motorcycles, and P500,000 worth of home appliances, groceries, and Phoenix products in the Tank-Full of Life Multi-Caravan of Prizes from February to June. Phoenix retail stations are located in Davao City, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, Surigao, Bukidnon, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Agusan del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, and General Santos City. Why Phoenix? Franchising a Phoenix station saves you time and money. With Phoenix, negotiations and approvals are faster because decision-makers are practically a call away. Recovery period of investment is shorter because of our low investment plan offerings and higher per-liter margin, which also grants you bigger earnings in the long run. You invest small but get returns faster. How does Phoenix provide faster returns? Our average construction period is three months, even for a mega station so you can start earning sooner than later. Our start-up costs are kept to a minimal. Bond and equipment deposits earn interest. Construction costs depend on the agreed design between franchisee and franchisor and can thus go at a significantly lower total. Our terms are flexible, customized to meet the franchisee’s needs, keeping in mind the bottom line that is the profitability of the business partners: you and Phoenix Petroleum. Who can qualify as Phoenix’s franchisee? Individuals who have the needed capital, have the capability and the willingness to learn the business, and have the right attitude to operate a Phoenix facility. What are your criteria for selecting a site? Currently, we require an area to be at least 800 square meters, with a 25-square-meter frontage. The site must be located along the highway with a potential volume of at least 120 KL. Exceptions on lot area requirements may be made based on the potential volume of the site. Who will look for the site? Our prospects usually recommend sites to us. However, interested franchisees without potential sites may still apply but may be required to wait until Phoenix Petroleum, the franchisor, finds a suitable location that the franchisee agrees to operate. Who will provide the building plans and who will do the construction? When paid, the franchise fee entitles the franchisee to customized building plans and designs for his station. Only accredited contractors can build the station but the franchisee may make his recommendations. Who will shoulder the construction costs? The franchisee will shoulder the construction costs except for franchisor-owned stations. How soon can I operate my Phoenix Station? Once the site has been approved, the franchise agreement signed, and all required fees paid, it will take approximately 2-3 months for a Phoenix station to be ready for operations, depending on the size of the station. Phoenix Fuels Life station in Lizada St, Davao City How much will it cost to own a Phoenix Gas Station? The conservative amount for franchisee-owned stations is Php3,000,000.00 including the franchise fee, construction cost, equipment deposits and initial stock. Who provides the gasoline service station’s employees? The franchisee will provide the needed manpower, but Phoenix Petroleum Philippines will provide the needed training for the franchisee and his/her initial hired employees. Besides selling petroleum products, can we put up other businesses at the site? If your property is big enough, you may operate other franchisor-accredited businesses on the premises. The added establishments may or may not be owned by the franchisee. What are the business concepts allowed in the Phoenix community? There is no limit as to the type/kind of establishment that may be put up in a community as long as it is approved by Phoenix. Let callers pass from department to department with no end in sight. 3. Screen calls. Callers should not repeat their stories each time the call is transferred. 4. Put calls on hold longer than 2 minutes. 5. Forget to follow-through. tips How to make your gas go a long, long way In these challenging times, we need to save on costs. Here are tips to increase your gas mileage. In the end, you don’t only save money, you also save time and energy while making the world a greener place. Drive sensibly Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money. Don’t drive too fast While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional P13 per gallon for gas. Observing the speed limit is also safer. Remove excess weight Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2%. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones. Avoid excessive idling If you’re in the car waiting for someon, turn the engine off. Idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines. Keep your engine properly tuned Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary based on the kind of repair and how well it is done. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent. Check & replace air filters regularly Replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car's gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. Your car's air filter keeps impurities from damaging the inside of your engine. Not only will replacing a dirty air filter save gas, it will protect your engine. Keep tires properly inflated You can improve your gas mileage by around 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Underinflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.4 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer. The cost of crude oil now accounts for about 73% of the gasoline pump price. World crude oil prices are at record highs due mainly to high worldwide oil demand relative to supply. Other contributing factors include political events and conflicts in some major oil producing regions, as well as other factors. What are the products and uses of petroleum? The most common products from petroleum are energy products: gasoline, heating oil, and diesel fuel. Other petroleum products are: ink, crayons, bubble gum, dishwashing liquids, deodorant, eyeglasses, records, tires, ammonia, and heart valves.
