Palmetto Quilt Guild Hilton Head Island, SC www.palmettoquiltguild.org July, 2008 July17, 2008 Our own Connie Davidson presents Antique Quilts – Their History And How To Repair Them Connie will show antique quilts from her extensive collection of “rescued” quilts, and will discuss various techniques for cleaning and repairing old and fragile quilts. If you have a quilt that is old and in need of repair, especially something with sentimental value, this is the lecture for you! Don’t forget . . . there is no meeting in August. See you in September!! September 18, 2008 Mary Sorensen presents "The Quiltmaker's Secret Weapon" We can never learn enough about fabric selection, and this entertaining PowerPoint lecture deals with the under-used design tool available to quiltmakers: Visual Texture. The way a fabric looks – which prints you choose – has a huge impact on how exciting your quilt will be. Through a series of Power-Point examples, both good and bad, some of the mysteries of this neglected design tool will be unraveled, and you will approach fabric selection with more confidence and enthusiasm. Workshop, September 19, 2008: "Learn to Love Needleturn" Achieve great looking hand applique and actually enjoy doing it! Stitch a variety of needleturn techniques, including elegant thin stems, sharp points and "Vs" and perfect circles. This workshop is designed to improve the level of workmanship for students already hooked on applique, and to provide a solid basis for the beginning student who enjoys hand work. Of course you won't complete the design in class, but you will leave class able to finish this project with confidence. 2008 Workshop Sign-up Cost: M embers, $40; non-members, $50. To sign up for any workshop(s), send the registration form below to Carol Lee, 196 Stratford Village W ay, Bluffton, SC, 29909. Enclose a check made out to Palmetto Quilt Guild. Questions? Patty Bullen, Carol Paradis, and Claudia Van Thiel Membership News We have two new members who joined and were introduced at the June guild meeting. Please make them welcome and especially contact them if they live nearby. We need to carpool and conserve gas!! Cathy Carpentier, 54 Reedy Place, Sun City, 705-9153 Eleanor Sieger, 45 Queen’s Folly Rd. #653, Palmetto Dunes, 341-5487 If anyone is interested in joining an existing bee or starting a new one, please contact Mary Saladino (363-2323 or [email protected]), since she is filling in at this position for the remainder of 2008. Thanks! Outreach News We have a new Outreach Chairperson! Doris Williams has accepted the position, and there are outreach activities going on during the summer. Cynthia Joyner is working with a group of Breast Cancer Survivors who are making a quilt which illustrates their feelings about what they are going through. Each member of the group is making one twelve-inch block to be incorporated into a large quilt that will hang in the Breast Center. Outreach will be calling on PQG members, when the time comes, to assist with assembling the blocks and quilting the quilt. Please let Doris know ([email protected] or 757-2887) if you are interested in helping with this project. Outreach is also coordinating a “see quilts being made” display at De Gullah Store at The Mall on July 26 from 11:00 to 4:00. Again, please let Doris know if you’d like to participate. We’ll need to have about four quilters there continuously (for a total of about 8 quilters), working on their projects, during the 5-hour period. Let Doris know if you’d rather be there in the first half of the period or the last half! De Gullah Store has visiting artists once a month, and the artists can sell their work there, splitting 50-50 with the store. If you have a quilt you’d like to sell, give Doris a call! Quilt Show News Monia Summers, our Quilt Show 2010 Chairperson, is still looking for a Co-chair. This person will assist Monia in planning the show, function as Quilt Show treasurer, and be prepared to chair our next show in 2012. This is a great job for an energetic person who wants to meet quilters from all over the Lowcountry! If you are interested in this job, please give Monia a call at 681-3500 or e-mail her at [email protected]. Our Raffle Quilt Committee is working hard on the Raffle Quilt for the 2010 show, and it promises to be truly beautiful! They expect to have it ready for viewing by our November luncheon. Nominating News Our Nominating Committee chairperson, Cynthia Joyner, reports that she’s making progress in filling jobs for next year, but she still needs to find a President-elect and a Program Co-chair. President-elect is a job that lets you meet people and learn the President’s duties for the next year. It’s necessary to attend board meetings and be prepared to take over at meetings in the President’s absence. In the past, the Program Co-chair worked to find and book speakers for the next year’s meetings (programs for 2009 are already set) while the Program Chair looked after the speakers while they were here. But this is not cast in stone! Give Sharon Williams a call at 705-9824 if you’d like to explore working with Programs. You don’t have to know a lot about the world of professional quilters, and Sharon will happily share her knowledge. If you’ve wanted to have a say in what programs we have, now’s your chance! If you are willing to take one of these jobs, please give Cynthia Joyner a call at 785-3705, or email her at [email protected].
