How to get your riders licence in
3 easy steps?
Getting a scooter or motorcycle licence in NSW is easy!

Step 1:
Obtain your Learners Riders Licence
Step 1a: Complete the practical Pre-Learner course. Book online on the myRTA website or call 13 22 13.
The course is held on 2 consecutive days or nights, running for 3.5 hours each session. The cost includes the
motorcycle or scooter, helmet, gloves and the tuition. You will need to be dressed appropriately, covering all skin
and wearing enclosed shoes. The course is a pass/fail criteria.
If you complete this course on an automatic (scooter), you will still be able to ride a motorcycle but only once you
are on your full licence.

Step 1b: Complete the Rider Knowledge Test (RKT) at an RTA office. Pass this test by being knowledgeable of the
road users handbook and the motorcycle users handbook.
Upon passing the RKT, you will complete an eye test and have your photo taken, then a learner rider licence will be
issued. You now have your Learners Riders Licence!

Step 2:
Obtain your Pre-Provisional P1 Licence. Book online on the myRTA website or call 13 22 13.
Step 2a: Complete the one day RTA course and at the end of the course complete the Motorcycle Operators Skills
Test (M.O.S.T). If you pass the test, you will receive a certificate that you need to take with you to the RTA to update
your licence. If you fail the test, you need to rebook and pay for another M.O.S.T. This can be no earlier than 7 days
later.

Go to an RTA branch, have your photo taken and pay the fee to have a provisional licence issued.
You now have your Provisional P1 Riders Licence.
Step 2b: Progress to your P2 licence. Go to the RTA after 12 months* but prior to the expiry date of your provisional
P1 riders licence (18months). Have your photo taken and pay the fee and progress to P2 licence class*.
You now have your Provisional P2 Riders Licence.

Step 3:
Obtain your full riders licence.
Go to the RTA prior to the expiry date of your provisional P1 or P2 riders licence. Have your photo taken and pay the
fee and progress to a full licence.

it is below 90 km/h.
P1 riders must not carry any pillion

A red ‘P’ plate (P1) must be clearly
displayed on the back of the motorcycle.

incur four or more demerit points.
A learner who commits driving offences may
have their licence cancelled by a court or
Roads and Maritime Services (replacing
Roads and Traffic Authority).
You must not ride faster than 100km/h
and must observe the speed limit where it
is below 100 km/h.

A green ‘P’ plate (P2) must be clearly
displayed on the back of the motorcycle.
Your licence will be suspended if you incur
seven or more demerit points.

Have an engine capacity not greater than 660ml, and
Have a power to weight ratio not greater than 150 kilowatts per tonne.
