Objectives
1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal bleeding and when
emergent treatment intervention is required.
2. Differentiate between upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding in terms of signs,
symptoms, and treatment.
3. Identify signs and symptoms of abdominal emergencies and recognize when
surgical intervention is required.
4. Recognize risk factors for, and early signs and symptoms of, an acute abdomen and
flares of inflammatory bowel disease.
5. Determine the appropriate treatment regimen for esophageal emergencies based
upon the nature of the ingestion or obstruction.
6. Discuss the signs, symptoms, and treatment of hepatic failure.
7. Recognize signs and symptoms of acute pancreatitis and identify which patients are
at highest risk for mortality.
8. Understand the indications for total parenteral nutrition and tube feeding in
patients who present with gastrointestinal emergencies.
