Consett AFC officials have withdrawn the club’s application to move up to a new UniBond Northern Division One because they still don’t know where they will be playing over the next two years. CONSETT AFC are hoping to win their first Durham County Cup for 28 years. The Steelmen are one game away from winning their first Durham Cup since 1969 after they beat South Shields 3-1 in the Semi Final at Belle Vue on March 7. Goals from Jonjo Dickman, David Anderson and Michael Brown saw Consett through against their Division Two opposition. They now play local rivals Chester-le-Street Town in the final, 1 Consett 2007 - ready to emulate the team of 1969 which takes place at Sunderland Nissan’s ground on April 6. Although Consett have beaten Chester-le-Street twice this season, Manager Kenny Lindoe was not taking anything for granted. He said: “We’ve only got 17 players eligible for the final so fingers crossed they all stay fit. I’m hoping Steven Brown is going to be fit after the problems he’s been having with his hamstring. Andy Appleby’s also just back from injury, and there’s little time to try things out. “Both games against them have been close so I’m expecting a hard-fought, close-run final.” -- www.consettafc.com -- Tow Law Town 4 Consett 0 (Ironworks Road) March 24, 2007 Consett 5 Bishop Auckland 0 (Belle Vue Park) March 21, 2007 Both Northern League A WEEK is a long time in politics, they say, but three days in the life of Consett AFC is an eternity. Consett seemed to have finally got over the post-Michael Mackay malaise with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Bishop Auckland on Wednesday, March 21, but before the week was over they had slumped to a dismal 4-0 derby defeat against local rivals Tow Law. Consett have struggled to find consistent good form since striker Mackay left for Hartlepool United in February, but they appeared to have ended their mini-slump with a 5-0 thrashing of Bishop Auckland. made it three in the 52nd minute before he set up Robson for his second three minutes later. Once again Ken Lindoe was forced to shuffle his pack. Jonjo Dickman and Neil Wilkinson returned to the side while injury victims Steven Brown and Carl Piecha were forced to sit the game out. Consett were slow out of the blocks and it was the home side that made most of the early running, with a strong wind making it difficult for both teams, but having survived the early scares Consett came into the game more with their first serious attack in the 25th minute. After a couple of Durham chances, the Steelmen took the lead. Issue 2, April 2007 2 Screamer! - Dickman finds the net from 22 yards It was a goal that stood out in what had been a poor game to that point. Mark Patterson won a loose ball in midfield and laid it off to Jonjo Dickman, who created space for himself before unleashing a splendid 22-yard drive into the top corner that gave Winter no chance. Consett's lead was short-lived as City equalized within two minutes. Richardson pounced on a rebound after Platten had stopped a low drive from Smith and although he appeared to scuff his shot it spun out of the keeper's reach and nestled in the bottom corner to make it 1-1. The second half carried on the theme of the first as the wind disrupted the play of both sides, with neither managing to find their own players with passes. The Steelmen were starting to step up the pressure as the half wore on, but they couldn't make the break- through. Pounder’s frustration in front of goal continued as he missed two chances with the result still in the balance. But then, as the game appeared to be drifting towards a draw, Durham City’s English swung a hopeful boot at a loose ball from 35 yards out which soared on the wind over Consett’s goalkeeper Platten's head and in off the post. Match Reports Consett AFC Newsletter Consett YMCA Juniors will be adding an under-21s team to their roster next season. Peter Killeen, who manages the Consett YMCA Juniors under18s team, has confirmed that they will be competing at under21 level next season. At the moment, Durham County FA are working to pull together sufficient teams for a county under-21s league that will play on Saturdays. If this league is not in place for August, Consett YMCA Juniors under-21s will compete on Sundays in the Russell Foster Under-21 League. Mr Killeen was delighted with the news. He said: “The under-18s are definitely going to go on to under-21s. “At the moment, Hargreaves are prepared to sponsor a new under-21s league for the county to be run by Durham FA. Durham are trying to find out how many teams are interested, but failing that, the under-18s will play in the Russell Foster on Sundays. “Whatever happens, there will be an under-21s team operating from Consett next season.” Mr Killeen thought that the increased opportunities could only be of benefit to young players. He said: “It might stop lads venturing into Sunday League a better chance to make it to a higher level.” At the moment, the gap between under-18s and the first team at Consett is filled by the Consett Ebchester Reserves, but Mr Killeen thinks the new under-21 team will fit well into the set-up.
