How to renew your registration

What is
renewal of
registration?
Renewal of registration is an online process where you
confirm your details and make declarations that you
have continued to be suitable to be a teacher and
maintained your professional practice.
What do I have to do to maintain my professional
practice?
If you are renewing after 5 years, you need to have
completed at least 50 days teaching, equivalent
practice or educational leadership and 100 hours
of standards referenced PD activities that update your
knowledge about content, practice and/or pedagogy,
during the last 5 years. If you renewed last year or are
renewing for the first time, you are on the annual cycle,
so you will need to have completed 10 days teaching,
equivalent practice or educational leadership and 20
hours of standards referenced PD activities that update
your knowledge about content, practice and/or
pedagogy, during the last year.
What do you mean by ‘standards referenced PD’?
The standards of professional practice articulate what
every teacher should know and be able to do and are
focussed on student learning. To have a connection
with the standards, a professional development activity
must update or develop the professional knowledge
and practice of a teacher. For more information, go
to the Institute website www.vit.vic.edu.au and look
under ‘I need to renew my registration’.
Need help
with your
renewal?

Will I need to provide evidence?
All teachers must keep records to support their
application for renewal of registration. A random
selection of teachers will be contacted by the
Institute and requested to provide evidence of their
professional practice. If requested, you can provide this
evidence in paper or electronic form.
What if I need to update my criminal record
check? Will that affect my renewal?
Yes. You cannot renew your registration without
a current, satisfactory criminal record check. If your
criminal record check is due for updating it will
appear as a task in your MyVIT, which you need to
complete as well as completing your renewal and
paying your annual fee.
What happens if I don’t renew my registration?
Renewal of registration is a legal requirement. If you
don’t renew your registration, it will expire and you
will not be able to teach.
How often will I be required to renew my
registration in the future?
From 2013 onward, you will be required to renew
your registration each year when you pay your
annual fee.
Will it take long?
For the majority of teachers, online renewal will take
a matter of minutes.
