WE CAN
HELP NM
NOW
VERY man, woman, and child, rich or poor, can be of help to our nation in this time
E
of emergency. We must all do something, work together, put up a united front. Some
may be t-o poor to give, but there are many things such can do. We are thankful
there is something every one can do to help Canada in this time of Crisis.
WE CAN BE OPTIMISTIC AND COURAGEOUS even when things
look a bit dark. A discouraged individual is a defeated individual. We believe God
still lives and reigns and that right will win in the end. God has always been on the side
of right, even when right was in the minority.
WE CAN ALL HELP TO PRODUCE. If working for the government, we
can put our best into our efforts, giving a full day's labor for a day's pay. There has not
been a food shortage in Canada. There may be some day. At present, there are indications of shortages in other lands, and we can help by producing all we can ourselves.
A small garden doesn't amount to much, but a million small gardens will grow a lot of
food.
WE CAN HELP TO PRESERVE that which has been produced. We have
been wasteful in Canada. We can "serve by saving." In a drugstore recently I saw a
sign, "Save your tinfoil and help win the war," and beneath that sign was a little box,
well filled with wrappers taken from candy bars, etc. This is being used by the Red
Cross. There are so many ways we might save. In the last war we had food restrictions. They may come again. Most of us are spending a great deal of money for luxuries which are really a detriment to us.
WE CAN CHEERFULLY PAY our taxes, the National Defence Tax, the Income Tax. We live in the best land in the world. We have enjoyed countless blessings
and liberties. They are worth sacrificing for. The Bible tells us that the Lord loves a cheerful giver. Let's give cheerfully.
WE CAN REFRAIN FROM DISCUSSING MILITARY MATTERS
with strangers. Many lives were lost in the last war because important facts were given
to the enemy.
WE CAN WITHHOLD UNNECESSARY CRITICISM of those in
authority. Those who are directing the affairs of our nation at this time, have burdens
and responsibilities, which many cannot even imagine. They need our encouragement
and support.
WE CAN ASK GOD TO HELP US, for "Man's Extremity is God's
Opportunity." God won't do for us what we can do for ourselves, but He will help us
when we have done all we can. If we love our country and have done what we can to
save it, we can conscientiously go to God for help. And "if God be for us, who can be
P.
against us?" "God plus one is a majority."

WHO IS TO BLAME?
VER the back fence, in our hotel lobbies, on the trains, over
the dinner table, on the street corners, we have heard men and
women telling someone just who is to blame for the present
condition of our world—for the war, the misery, the suffering, man's
cruelty to man, for the selfishness, greed, etc.
It is human nature to blame someone for things which are not
right. When Eve sinned in the garden of Eden, she blamed the serpent,
and Adam blamed Eve.
Some are inclined to blame two or three men for all the troubles
in our world. Some say it was all brought about by the Treaty of Versailles. Some blame this and some blame that.
The Treaty of Versailles may have had its imperfections but the
men who made it thought they were safeguarding democracy. And
while we must all admit that several individuals have figured largely in
the present conflict, and will have a lot to answer for, it is difficult to
believe that a few men could bring about the conditions we find in our
world today, if the world were not ready, if men's minds were not in
a condition to receive their philosophy of brute force and destruction,
of might against right.
A good many years ago, some supposedly-learned men across the
seas began the teaching of a pagan philosophy, in direct opposition to
the Bible. These very wise men began to tear down the Bible. They
declared it to be a myth—a fairy story. And of course anyone who believed it was childish, uneducated. These learned men began to teach
that God did not create the world—it began millions of years ago and
evolved from a tiny speck of protoplasm. They declared that man did
not fall, he did not sin. And if he did not sin he did not need a saviour.
Man, according to their theory, is getting better and better, and will
some day become a god. They tell us Christ was not the son of God,
but only a man. They teach that God did not give the Ten Commandments from Sinai, that there is no such thing as sin.
It would take books to go into detail and explain their theories.
These are just a few of the high spots of their philosophy. This teaching came across the sea and was accepted by the most learned of our
educators. It got into our universities, and the teachers in our higher
schools of learning began to make light of the Bible and the Bible record.
They taught this new theory to the teachers who went out into our
high schools and public schools. These teachers taught it to our boys
and girls. In other words we paid men and women to wreck the faith
of our children. Many a young man left his home a Christian and
came home from University an atheist, an unbeliever. His faith was
gone.
These learned men and their theories got into our theological
seminaries and taught our ministers

IF human solutions are the only hope
for the sinister problems of our generation, then we are doomed to tragedy. Depression years have yielded to
days of despair as the world enters another bloody conflict, which can bring
only chaos. There must be divine intervention as the lights of civilization
flicker out.
Nations fear one another, citizens
fear governments, and man fears his
fellow men. In contrast with this mental turmoil, the believer in God's word
holds to a firm hope. He is no pessimist as he views the grim specters
looming over humanity. The Master
has said: "Let not your heart be troubled." Is this blind faith? No; for as
we continue to read the Bible promise,
we find the cause for confidence.
To His disciples Jesus Christ continued: "Ye believe in God, believe
also in Me. In My Father's house are
many mansions: if it were not so, I
would have told you. I go to prepare
a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again,
and receive you unto Myself; that
where I am, there ye may be also."
John 14:1-3.
"But," says one, "those words were
spoken nineteen hundred years ago,
and Jesus has not come. Where is
your hope?" Our answer is: The
Christian's faith should be firmer today than at any previous time in world
history, for the omens of the Saviour's
return are certain.
Page 4
If we had our choke, not many of us would choose to live
in a godless nation. If all the world could follow in the footsteps of the Man of Galilee, how much better conditions
could be.
If the Christian church renounces
its faith in the doctrine of the second
advent of Jesus Christ, it is casting
away the hope of the ages. "1 will
come again" was the exact promise of
the Son of God. When He was taken
from the earth and a cloud received
Him out of the disciples' sight, two
angels affirmed His dictum: "This
same Jesus, which is taken up from
you into heaven, shall so come in like
manner as ye have seen Him go into
heaven." Acts 1:11.
Consider the testimony of the apostles in the New Testament. Paul describes that event in these vivid words:
"The Lord Himself shall descend from
heaven with a shout, with the voice
of the Archangel, and with the trump
of God: and the dead in Christ shall
rise first: then we which are alive and
remain shall be caught up together
with them in the clouds, to meet the
Lord in the air: and so shall we ever
be with the Lord." 1 Thessalonians
4:16, 17. Peter, James, Jude, and John
add their inspired message concerning
the Master's coming.
If we deny the words of Jesus Christ,
we cannot be Christians. "If ye continue in My word," said the Man of
Nazareth, "then are ye My disciples
indeed; and ye shall know the truth.
and the truth shall make you free."
John 8:31, 32. Many professed Christians scoff at the reality of the Lord's
second coming. They are content to
spiritualize the doctrine of the advent.
Yet there is no more vital teaching of
the Saviour than that of His promised
return.
On the Mount of Olives the Master
taught His second coming to the disciples. They earnestly asked. "When
shall these things be? and what shall
be the sign of Thy coming, and of the
end of the world?" Matthew 24:3. To
strengthen their faith, Jesus outlined
the events that would herald His return. "Now learn a parable of the fig
tree," He said; "When his branch is
yet tender, and putteth forth leaves,
ye know that summer is nigh: so likewise ye, when ye shall see all these
things, know that He is near, even at
the doors." Verses 32, 33, margin. If

we accept the Lord's declaration, we
find the second advent a certainty, for
His prophecies are being fulfilled today.
"Why is it essential to human happiness for Jesus Christ to come again?"
asks many a man who desires world
perfection through science, culture,
and education. When we survey the
social, economic, political, and religious trends of our age, we can find the
answer.
To save humanity from destruction
at its own hands, the Son of God must
return in power and glory. The prophetic word declares that in the final
act of earth's tragedy "the nations
were angry." Revelation i i :18. Christ,
in stating the omens of His advent,
proclaimed: "Ye shall hear of wars
and rumors of wars. . . . Nation shall
rise against nation, and kingdom
against kingdom." Matthew 24:6, 7.
With world conflict come the specters of famine, pestilence, and heartbreaking suffering. Dire physical distress, with millions "starving, naked,
and perhaps homeless" is what the
future holds for Europe, says Adolf
A. Berle, Jr., Assistant Secretary of
State. He predicts that trade blocked
by war will produce greater economic
turmoil and social unrest. In this
statement he makes a summation:
"Practically every population has been
led . . . into a blank impasse. . . . You
will find great masses of men, without
illusions, seeking and struggling for
an idea of life which gives them hope;
for an organization of peace which
lets them work toward that end; and
for a freedom of living which permits
them to walk in the land of the living
without fear."
After war comes famine, collapse of
finances, revolution, and pestilence.
If, as leaders declare, the world has
not recovered from World War I, how
is it possible to endure another complete black-out of moral, spiritual, and
material values?
"The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have now become nine," said
Herbert Hoover before the Overseas
Press Club of America. "Imperialism,
cte.troyer of independence. Intolerance, destroyer of minorities. Statism,
destroyer of personal liberty. Atheism,
destroyer of faith. And Hate, destroyer of the unity of mankind. After
them ride War and Death. And finally there sweep Famine and Pestilence."
Love and pity must have mingled
in the heart of the Lord as He saw the
closing events of this troubled earth.
"There shall be famines, and pestiluxes, and earthquakes, in divers
places. All these are the beginning of
sorrows." Matthew 24:7, 8. Wracked
by six thousand years of sin and selfishness of its inhabitants, the world waxes
old as a garment. Isaiah 51:6. The
ancient seer declared: "The transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it;
and it shall fall, and not rise again."
Isaiah 24:2o.
The soil grows sterile; natural resources of timber, oil, and water are
being exploited so rapidly that we
wonder what will be left for our children if this civilization should continue. But Peter describes the transformation that shall occur when the
Saviour comes. It will be a day when
the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt.
"Nevertheless we, according to His
promise, look for new heavens and a
new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." 2 Peter 3:12, 13.
In the realm of human relations
there will be unprecedented disregard
of divine and human law before Christ
comes. "This know also, that in the
last days perilous times shall come,"
wrote Paul. "For men shall be lovers
of their own selves, covetous, boasters,
proud, blasphemers, disobedient to
parents, unthankful, unholy, without
natural affection, trucebreakers, false
accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers
of those that are good, traitors, heady,
high-minded, lovers of pleasures more
than lovers of God; having a form of
godliness, but denying the power
thereof: from such turn away." 2 Timothy 3:1-5. Check these conditions
with today's headlines, and mark their
fulfillment.
In the economic world just prior to
the second advent, we may expect to
find inequality of wealth, with discontent and despair. "Know this, that in
the last days grievous times shall
come. For men shall be lovers of sell,
lovers of money." 2 Timothy 3:1, 2,
R. V. James, in the fifth chapter of
his epistle, depicts the cry of the poor
who have been defrauded by the rich.
In the days before Christ's appearing
there will be bitter class war.
Religious life will diminish as faith
in God ebbs. Jesus, looking to the
dark hours before the second advent,
said: "The love of many shall wax
cold." Matthew 24:12. As He saw
faith disappearing from the souls of
men, He exclaimed: "When the Son
of man cometh, shall He find faith on
the earth?" Luke 18:8. The Saviour
must come to redeem the remnant who
implicitly trust His words. They can
say: "Lo, this is our God; we have
waited for Him, and He will save us."
Isaiah 25:9.
As the signs of Jesus Christ's return
culminate before our eyes, we know
man's salvation is near. In war, famine, pestilence, and tragic suffering
the finger of sin has written humanity's doom. Only the Master can save!
In the dwindling resources of this
earth there is a sign that the selfish
rule of sinners cannot endure forever.

DO WE APPRECIATE CANADA ?
Down in the State of Pennsylvania lived an immigrant by the
name of Mario Izzo. That he was an Italian does not matter. He could
not help that. He had nothing to say about the land of his birth. But
he chose the United States as a place in which to live.
He lost his job and was put on a relief list. When he got his first
check he got himself a broom and went out to sweep the streets of
the city. A city official found him working and asked him who had
put him to work.
No one had asked him to sweep the streets. But he felt he must
do something for the land of his adoption that was keeping him. His
answer though brief is worthy of a great deal of thought, "I think this
is a wonderful country. I decide I will be an honest man in this country;
so I start to sweep. My bread it tastes sweet, and I feel like a man,
because I work."
Canada is a wonderful land. There is no better in our world. Are
we all as willing to help pay for the blessings we receive? We have liberties, privileges, which others have never known. May we be truly
thankful and at least endeavor to show our appreciation.

T
SOME COMFORTING THOUGHTS
FROM THE GOOD OLD BOOK
R.
N THE rapidly changing panorama of world affairs, it is interesting to note that statesmen and
others occupying positions of responsibility borrow from Biblical expressions phraseology for their description of present world conditions.
To illustrate, the word "Armageddon"
of the Apocalypse (Revelation 16:16)
is not in uncommon use today in
public addresses, as also in the news
in referring to present war conditions.
While this word is used but once in
the Bible, it is of such common occurrence today by speakers and writers
that a person would imagine that its
use in Holy Writ was very frequent.
In the rather brief address
of the British Queen on last Armistice
Day, November ii, in her appeal to
the women of the Empire, she referred at least twice to "this time of
trouble" in which we are living. She
also in the course of her address used
the expression "these trying times."
Truly, we are living in a world of
trouble and peril, "trying times."
These expressions can be found in
the Book of God and refer, as the
publishers of this magazine sincerely
believe, to this very time of human
events to which we have come in the
history of our race. "This know also,
that in the last days perilous times
shall come. For men shall be lovers
of their own selves, covetous, boasters,
proud, blasphemers, disobedient to
parents, unthankful, unholy, without
natural affection, trucebreakers, false
accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers
of those that are good, traitors, heady,
highminded, lovers of pleasures more
than lovers of God; having a form of
godliness, but denying the power
thereof: from such turn away." 2 Timothy 3:1-5. The apostle Paul in describing "last day" world conditions
speaks of them as "perilous times."
I
Page 6

Daniel, the statesman of his day
and Prophet of God, gave several
prophetic outlines of the world's future history. Though he wrote 2,500 years ago, he forecast, "what
shall be in the latter days," in chapter
2, verse 28. He comes to a climax in
the last chapter when, by inspiration,
he penned the striking words, "And
at that time shall Michael stand up,
the great prince which standeth for
the children of thy people: and there
shall be a time of trouble, such as
never was since there was a nation
even to that same time: and at that
time thy people shall be delivered,
every one that shall be found written
in the book." Daniel 12:1.
That we have come to that very
time, the "time of trouble" in "the
time of the end," (verse 4) is evidently clear to all students of Bible
prophecy. "The time of trouble" is to
THE EAGLE'S LESSON
The young are almost fully grown. It
is time for them to launch out for themselves; so far up amid the crags a mother
eagle "stirreth up her nest" (Deut. 32:
11). Yes, she literally tears it up so that
no longer is it comfortable for the young
to remain there. She "fluttereth over her
young" or slowly drives them, one by one,
over to the edge of the precipice. Then
when they attempt to fly, she hovers over
them, and when they are tired she bears
them on her wings to a place of safety.
Oh, the wonderful care of God for His
children. When we are too contented with
our temporal lot, He stirs our nest, and
when we call in anguish for aid, He bears
us up on His wings and assures us of the
mighty power of the "everlasting arms."
—A. Clark.
be the climax. Truly, present world
conditions bespeak the fact that we
are in that very time foretold by the
prophet. All who have taken the
opportunity to trace the rise and fall
of earthly kingdoms from the days of
Babylon—the time of Daniel the servant of God—to this our day, must be
thoroughly convinced by the outline
of the rise, decline, and fall of empires that we are living in the time
so clearly forecast by the prophet in
the second chapter when he said to
the old King Nebuchadnezzar, "And
in the clays of these kings shall the
urou Vl 11C4VC11 JCL
which shall never be destroyed: and
the kingdom shall not be left to other
people, but it shall break in pieces
and consume all these kingdoms, and
it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as
thou sawest that the stone was cut
out of the mountain without hands,
and that it brake in pieces the iron,
the brass, the clay, the silver, and
the gold; the great God hath made
known to the king what shall come to
pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof
sure." Daniel 2 : 44, 45. The stone
clearly represents Christ, and the setting up of His kingdom "which shall
never be destroyed."
Our mere reference to this most interesting prophecy in this connection
will not permit a detailed study of the
context which would prove clearly
that we have come down past the ages
through the history of Babylon, Media
Persia, Greece, and Rome. We are
definitely living in the divided state of
the old Roman Empire as represented
by the iron and the clay in the feet
and toes of the image. Thus finally,
even "the old mighty iron monarchy
of Rome" was broken up into fragments—to be more exact, into ten
parts. Many of the very nations of
r
■
Europe today are the remnants of that
once mighty kingdom which even in
the days of the first Advent of Christ
ruled to the extent, that, "all the
world," was taxed by her authority.
"And it came to pass in those days,
that there went out a decree from
Caesar Augustus, that all the world
should be taxed." Luke 2:1.
It is clearly evident therefore that
we are living in Daniel's "time of
trouble" which according to the
prophet was to immediately precede
the "standing up of Michael." The
standing up of Michael signifies the
second coming of Christ. His coming
is the hope of the world, and the
world is groping for a hope in these
uncertain times. No man can know
what the future holds in store, only
as he looks through the telescope of
divine and inspired prophecy. Truly,
the second return of Christ to our
world is the hope—the only hope—
"the blessed hope" (Titus 2:13) of
the world "in these times of trouble" to which we have come. The
world can not go on forever from
bad to worse. How terrible that in
one short quarter of a century within
the span of the lifetime of many of
us now living, that two great world
wars should have upset the equilibrium—the peace of the world. Only
twenty-five years ago the nations were
engaged in a titanic conflict, "a war
to end wars." The loss in life and
property destruction during the
World War was terrific. But even before the hospitals are cleared of those
injured by the weapons of destruction
in that great war and struggle, we are
engaged in another, the destructive
forces of which no one can foresee.
Truly, in such an hour the hope of
the world centers in that glad time
foretold by seers, prophets, and apostles, as also by the Lord Jesus Himself. Speaking of these last days to
which we have come, Jesus declared,
"And there shall be signs in the sun,
and in the moon, and in the stars;
and upon the earth distress of nations,
with perplexity; the sea and waves
roaring; Men's hearts failing them for
fear, and for looking after those
things which are coming on the earth:
for the powers of heaven shall be
shaken. And then shall they see the
Son of man coming in a cloud with
power and great glory." Luke 21:2527. And again the Master in response
to the query of His disciples, "What
shall be the sign of Thy coming, and
of the end of the world?" said that,
"nation shall rise against nation, and
kingdom against kingdom. . . ." Matthew 24:3, 7. And this is in full accord with the word of the Revelator,
the Seer of Patmos, when in vision on
that rock-bound island, he wrote,
"And the nations were angry, and
Thy wrath is come, and the time of
the dead, that they should be judged,
and that thou shouldest give reward
unto Thy servants and prophets, and
to the saints, and them that fear Thy
name, small and great; and shouldest
destroy them which destroy the
earth." Revelation i1:18.
These sorrows and wars are coming
upon the earth not because God so
ordains. No indeed! ! God in His
Holy Word only foretells what conditions the wickedness of the men of
earth will lead the inhabitants of the
world to do. Satan—not God— is the
instigator of all strife and destruction.
On this point, John in the Revelation
declares, "And I saw three unclean
spirits like frogs come out of the
mouth of the dragon, and out of the
mouth of the beast, and out of the
mouth of the false prophet. For they
are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings
of the earth and of the whole world,
to gather them to the battle of that
great day of God Almighty." Revelation 16:13, 14. These words are definite. They need no interpretation.
Clearly it is the "spirits of devils"
that "are going forth unto the kings
of the earth and of the whole world,"
that will one day finally bring the
earth to its final crisis—the climax of
earth's history, the "time of trouble"
in all of its fulness. After "Armageddon," whenever that comes, then
the second glorious return of our
Lord which will end the reign of sin
and sorrow. When He comes to earth
the second time, Christ comes not as
man's Saviour and Redeemer, He
comes not to suffer and die as He
came two thousand years ago; but He
comes to reign as "King of kings and
Lord of lords." Revelation 19:16. He
is to be the rightful heir to the eternal throne. He gave Himself a sacrifice to redeem from a rebel world a
race of the righteous who shall inherit the kingdom forever and forever.
All Christians, yea all people,
should be working now as never before for the hastening of that glad
day when "the Prince of Peace" Jesus
the Lord shall come and establish a
kingdom where there will be no more
hatred, no merely human selfish ambitions, no strife and war. Selfishness
will have given place to righteousness.
Peace will take the place of sorrow.
Joy and happiness will be the heritage of the redeemed of the Lord.
"In that day shall this song be sung
in the land of Judah; We have a
strong city; salvation will God appoint
for walls and bulwarks. Open ye the
gates, that the righteous nation which
keepeth the truth may enter in. Thou
wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose
mind is stayed on Thee: because he
trusteth in Thee. Trust ye in the
Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength."
Isaiah 26:1-4. And again the Revelator gives to us the blessed inspired assurance, "And God shall wipe away
all tears from their eyes; and there
shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there
be any more pain: for the former
things are passed away. And he that
sat upon the throne said, Behold, I
make all things new. And He said
unto me, Write: for these words are
true and faithful." Revelation 21:4,

DROBABLY the most fertile field of
quackery today is that pertaining
to diet. Self-styled doctors and professors would have one believe that
white bread is poison, that fasting will
cure all human ills, that to eat proteins and carbohydrates at the same
meal is to court nutritional disaster,
and numerous other similar fantastic
theories.
So many persons are unacquainted
with even the elementary facts of the
science of nutrition that the food faddist with a theory and the food quack
with a scheme make profitable appeals
to them. To those whose knowledge
of food chemistry is limited the food
faddist can talk glibly of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, mineral salts,
and, most wonderful of all, vitamins;
and his claims, preposterous but plausible, are given serious consideration.
As a result, there is a veritable plague
of "diet experts," who dispense vast
quantities of platitudes and perhicious misinformation on the subject
n{ nitririnn
One self-styled "food expert," who
conducted his business on the mailorder plan, pretended to sell expert
advice on dieting, and claimed to
cure disease by prescribing some particular diet for the sufferer. He declared that all ailments are a form of
catarrh—appendicitis, catarrh of the
appendix; pneumonia, catarrh of the
lungs; pyorrhea, catarrh of the gums.
To cure this catarrhal condition was
to cure whatever ailed one, and it was
necessary to use his particular system
of diet to bring about the cure. He
also claimed that too much cream, butter, and cheese would produce deaf-

dangerous preparations. The advertisements appeal to the vanity of persons who wish to regain slim, graceful
figures, and also to the business necessities of those who become so fat that
they can no longer do their work effi-
ness and discharging ears; that certain
foods would make one nervous, shy,
and low-spirited; and that grapefruit
and tomatoes would dissolve goiters
and gallstones. It is reported that a
mother who had a boy in the last
stages of consumption telegraphed this
diet specialist, asking what she should
do for her son. The man telegraphed
back: "Wire forty dollars for quick
relief, followed by complete course."

lars for treatment, and received instruction as to what food to give the
boy. In a few days the boy died. The
"diet specialist" was told of the destitute circumstances in which the poor
woman found herself, and was urged
to give her a refund. He refused to do
it.
Another food faddist told of an
amazing new discovery that would permit obese women to reduce to the ideal
figure in two weeks by means of what
he called a reducing cup, which was
said to remove fat as an eraser removes
pencil marks. The device was made
of rubber, and was wholly without
value for the purpose for which it was
sold. One woman who had bought
one of these contraptions and found
out how worthless it was decided to
turn the thing to some real use, so she
attached it to a piece of broom handle;
it is now making a passable "plumber's friend" to flush the drain pipe of
the kitchen sink.
"Promoters of so-called obesity
remedies and fat-reducing cures," says
E. J. Cullen of the Food, Drug, and
Insecticide Administration, United
States Department of Agriculture,
"are attempting to influence fat peo-
ciently. The principal appeal of most
of the promotion claims is that no

do it all, and the advertiser says the
patient can eat all he wants and as
often as he wishes, which is a strong
inducement to most stout people. No
other class of preparation exploited
to humbug the people has a wider
sale than these so-called fat reducers,
and nearly all the preparations are
absolutely worthless."
Usually reducing cannot be accomplished without injury, unless it is
clone under the guidance of a physician. Loss of flesh is by no means a
blessing, if accomplished by loss of
health or strength. .However, it seems
as if the fad for slimness is over, and
that lean figures and style have parted
company. This is a boon to the health
of our nation, and a blessing to its
women.
Acid in the body has been a hobby
of food faddists for a long time. The
body tissues are normally alkaline. If
the blood should become the least bit
acid, death would result; and, if its
degree of alkalinity is reduced, serious
illness results. Because of improper
diet, certain secretions and excretions
of the body may become abnormally
acid. All foods, when oxidized, leave
a resulting ash, which may be acid,

alkaline, or neutral. These ash end
products are largely excreted by the
kidneys. If there is an excess of foods
eaten with an acid ash, there is a tendency to increase the acidity of the
urine, and also to increase the concentration of these end products in the
blood stream, with a resultant reduction of the alkaline reserve. But the
body and the blood remain alkaline,
even though less so. Symptoms of
acidosis are clear-cut, and need cause
no difficulty in diagnostic recognition.
Perhaps it is because vitamins are
so new and complicated to the faddist, who knows only of their source
from fresh fruits and vegetables, that
the roughage, or raw food, fad has
"
•
been so widespread. It is true that
their lack will cause grave constitutional diseases, the cure of which lies
in the taking of the vitamins in a proper diet. It is not necessary, however,
to resort to the eating of "hay" in order to get the vitamin requirement.
With the exception of one,—that preventing scurvy,—these vitamins are
not destroyed by heat. So if one's diet
is balanced,—a proper amount of
vegetables, fruits, and other foodstuffs,
—there need be no fear of trouble
from this source. The cooking of food
is primarily to make it more digestible, and does not change it much
chemically. The salts remain intact.
The vitamins are not destroyed.
It is true that some individuals have
the knack of making unpalatable the
food they attempt to cook; so perhaps
in some cases the raw-food faddist is
driven in self-defense to eat raw food.
But if he advocates it for everyone,
and as a cure-all, it may prove disastrous to some, especially to the invalid
or to the little tot whose digestive
processes do not adequately care for
such large quantities of roughage. The
difficulties of digestion are not sufficiently kept in mind by those enthusiasts who prescribe alike for the
adult, the invalid, and the child. If
the system requires a roughage tonic.
well and good; but the necessity for
such a diet should be ascertained and
its effect carefully watched before
continued use.
The idea that fasting is a cure for
all human ailments is not uncommon
among those who know little about
nutrition and less about physiology.
The theory is that fasting clears the
body of poisons. The fact is that a
long fast produces poisons, because
the body is compelled to feed upon
itself. A woman in the last stages of
tuberculosis attended a recent food
clinic. She had been to the author of

al vagary has been promoted by numerous food faddists, who have been
so persistent in pointing out the alleged dangers of this combination
that many otherwise intelligent persons have made their meals miserable
by attempting the impossible task of
abstaining from one or the other of
these actually desirable substances.
Man has lived on proteins and starches
for a long time, and has not only survived but grown strong •on them. The
absurdity of the notion that a mixture of these elements is dangerous to
health is clearly shown by the fact that
nature in her wisdom combined proteins and starches or sugars in a wide
variety of edible roots, tubers, bulbs,
plants, grasses, grains, seeds, leaves,
and common foodstuffs. Practically
every known food has in it some protein. The richest and best sources of
protein are milk, cheese, legumes,
meat, eggs, and nuts, while the poorest sources are the fruits and vegetables
that contain one per cent or less. The
starchy foods include bread, cereals,
and vegetables such as potatoes. All
these starchy foods contain natural
protein.
If the foundation of the daily diet
consists of such protective foods as
milk and dairy products, green leafy
vegetables, fruits, and eggs, the remainder of the day's fare may logically include bread, cereals, other vegetables, and whatever else one may be
allowed. Such a regime will provide
all the necessary food elements, including minerals, vitamins, and fluids.

"The Sabbath was made for man,"
said Jesus Christ. (Mark 2:27) . It was
made for humanity — for the whole
human race, not simply for the Jews.
Fifty-two times a year it comes to stabilize faith in God as the Creator of
men. Its original and primary purpose was to guard mankind against
theories of the origin of life which
leave God out, or limit His power to
create a perfect work in six literal
days. If the Sabbath had been faithfully kept down through the years as
a memorial of creation week, there
never would have been an atheist, or
an H. G. Wells, propounding the
of protoplasm in mid-ocean, grew to
be a jelly fish, then a mussel, a crab, a
crocodile, an ape, or something resembling each of these, and after millions of years lost his tail, stood up on
his hind legs, and became eventually
the intelligent, reasoning creature he
is today.
Different Races Observe
Different Days
In the Christian world two Sabbath
days are recognized. Sunday, the first
day of the week, is kept by the great
majority. Saturday is kept by a minority. The seven-day week is common
to many nations, observing different
days as a rest day. It is said that the
Greeks used to keep Monday, the Persians Tuesday, the Assyrians Wednesday, the Egyptians Thursday, the
Turks Friday, the Jews Saturday, and
the Romans Sunday. For several centuries the majority of Christians kept
Saturday as the Sabbath. Sunday first
began to be called the Sabbath in the
17th century. No one ever thought of
calling the first day of the week "the
Sabbath" till 1600 years of the "Christian" era had rolled by. In recording
British Acts of Parliament, the official

Hansard still designates Saturday by
the Latin term "Dies Sabbati" (Day
of the Sabbath) , and Sunday by the
expression "Dies Solis" (Day of the
Sun).
The First Sunday Law
How Utiristians gradually aaoptect
the Roman weekly festival, Sunday, is
a matter of history. Converts to the
Christian religion at first kept Saturday as a matter of course. The Romans did not approve. They began to
object vociferously to Roman Christians observing any other day than
the one upon which their pagan ancestors had worshipped the sun. There
were plenty of "Jew-haters" and "Jewbaiters" in those days as today, and
the seventh-day Sabbath had a Jewish
flavor about it. The pagan Romans
began to persecute their Christian
brothers. In 321 A.D. the pagan emperor Constantine enacted the first
Sunday law, requiring all Romans to
observe Sunday in place of Saturday.
In his law he calls Sunday the "Venerabili Dies Solis"—or "The Venerable Day of the Sun." The majority
of Christians objected to the decree
and continued to observe Saturday for
forty years after the decree was passed.
They were forty years of cruel persecution.
The Council of Laodicea
When Constantine saw that Christianity was spreading all over the
Roman Empire like a prairie fire, and
that he had little influence with the
Christians, he himself professed conversion and was baptised. What he
was unable to accomplish as a pagan
emperor outside the church, he soon
accomplished as a "Christian" emperor within the church. His objective,
C an Astute nolitician_ was to weld together the Pagan and Christian elements into which he saw his empire
dividing. His supporters argued that
the Christians had a good excuse for
keeping Sunday, in that Jesus Christ
rose from the dead on that day. They
might as well have argued for the observation of Thursday, the day on
which Christ ascended to His Father;
—or Friday, the day on which Christ
completed the great work of redemption by dying on the cross. Constantine saw no reason why Romans should
borrow a Jewish religious festival, or
why they could not worship Jehovah
on the same day upon which the pagan
half of the empire worshipped their
gods. Church leaders began to argue
that they would have a better chance
of winning the pagans to Christianity
if they adopted the Roman holiday.
Finally, at the Council of Laodicea,
the Catholic Church formally adopted
Sunday as a Christian institution, insisting that Christ's resurrection on
that day was a sufficient justification
for keeping it. Anathema was pronounced against all who continued to
observe the seventh day of the week.
Sunday was christened "the Lord's
Day." References to the first day of
the week in the New Testament were
used to prove that the disciples had
a special regard for that day, and the
persecution of dissenters was intensified.
Prison and Death for
Sab bath-Keepers
In every generation in spite of per•.
secution a minority have kept the
seventh-day Sabbath, maintaining that
none of the references to the first day
of the week in the Bible show that it
was ever intended to take the place
of the Sabbath day. Some of the early
Christians kept both days. Columba,
the first missionary to the British Isles,
kept the seventh-day Sabbath. So did
many of the Waldenses, and the Piedmontese, of whom Milton wrote in his
sonnet: "Their bones lie scattered on
the Alpine mountains cold." Milton
defended the observance of Saturday
as the Sabbath, in preference to Sunclay, in a special treatise he wrote on
the subject. Melanchthon, co-worker
with Luther in the Reformation, argued for the observance of the seventhday Sabbath in place of Sunday, claiming that the fourth commandment
was one of the commandments the
Catholic Church had tampered with,
fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel 7:25.
Anabaptists, Sabbatarians, and others
went to prison and death rather than
give up observing what they felt convinced was the true Bible Sabbath.
Nevertheless Disraeli testifies to the
fact that there were as many as 16
Sabbatarian churches in London at
the dawn of the 17th century.
Reformation Still In Progress
There is not space here to investigate the position of Sunday-keepers or
Sabbath-keepers in the light of New
Testament teaching, but this will be
done exhaustively in subsequent issues
Of THE WATCHMAN. FOr the present,
let this fact be emphasized: God has
hallowed and blessed the Sabbath day
above all days. He calls it "MY holy
day" in Isaiah 58:13. It is a memorial
of God's creative, and therefore of His
"re-creative" power. At the end of
creation week God sanctified and
blessed the Sabbath day, setting it
apart as a day of rest. "I gave them my
Sabbaths," He says, "to be a sign between Me and them, that they might
know that I am the Lord that sanctify
them." Ezekiel 20:12. "Blessed is
the man that doeth this, and the son
of man that layeth hold on it; that
keepeth the Sabbath from polluting
it, and keepeth his hand from doing
any evil." Isaiah 56:2. Showing that
the Sabbath was never intended to be
exclusively a Jewish institution, we
read in Isaiah 56:6, 7: "Also the sons
of the stranger, that join themselves

HOW AND WHY CHRIST WILL COME AGAIN
How long have men known of Christ's second coining?
"He shall send Jesus Christ . . . whom the heaven must receive
until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken
by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began." Acts
3:20, 21.
What prophet living before the flood spoke of this great event?
"Enoch, also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying,
Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints." Jude 14.
In what definite language does David proclaim the same truth?
"Our God shall come, anel shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about
Him." Ps. 5o:3.
When about to leave this world, what did Jesus Himself promise
His disciples?
"If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again." John
14:3.
Was this doctrine preached in the apostolic church after Christ's
ascension to heaven?
"So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto
them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without
sin unto salvation." Heb. 9:28.
For what event, then, should the sober and godly Christian of
today be looking and preparing?
"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of
the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ." Titus 2:13.
"Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not
the Son of man cometh." Matt. 24:44.
Do we have any assurance that Christ's coming will be personal,
literal, and visible?
"This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall
so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven." Acts
1:11.
To what extent will Christ's coming be visible?
"Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him."
Rev. 1:7.
Does "every eye" refer to all mankind, irrespective of creed, color,
or nationality?
"Then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and
then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the
Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great
glory." Matt. 24:30.
What innumerable host accompanies Christ on His return to
this earth?
"When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy
angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory."
Matt. 25:31.
Besides seeing Christ coming with their eyes, what will the inhabitants of the earth hear with their ears?
"The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout,
with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and
the dead in Christ shall rise first." 1 Thess. 4:16.
What effect will the brilliancy and terribleness of Christ's coming have upon the scoffing and unbelieving multitudes?
"The kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men,
and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman,
and every freeman, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of
the mountains; and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us,
and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and
from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of His wrath is come;
and who shall be able to stand?" Rev. 6:15-17.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY
HAPPY
AND
HEALTHY
c4. R. C4ufranc,
OOD health is one of the primary
G essentials of happiness in the
home circle. Its true value is not
really appreciated until it is lost.
Then, too frequently, it is found that
regaining health is a much more difficult problem than keeping it. Unfortunately many people suffer irreparable damage to their bodies before
they learn this lesson. Hence the impossibility of over-emphasizing the
value of prevention in contrast to
cure.
General Health Principles
In normal times, and especially in
these days of tension, each member of
definite responsibility rests upon him
or her to promote the health and
happiness of the family. Therefore,
it should always be the aim of each
member, young and old alike, to
maintain the highest possible standard
of health. In order to do this, there
are certain general principles which
must be followed. Without obedience
to these laws, it would be as impossible
to obtain perfect health for any length
of time as to run an engine without
fuel or oil.
Perhaps we might mention first of
all the importance of good, plain,
nourishing food. This should consist
chiefly of fruits, grains, and vegetables,
avoiding flesh-foods and rich or stimulating articles of diet. Thorough mastication and regularity are two vital
points in connection with our meals.
Not more than three meals a day
should be taken, and three or four
hours must be allowed between each
for thorough digestion. During this
time, nothing whatever should be
eaten.
The food should be masticated and
turned over and over in the mouth
about as long again as is thought necessary by most individuals. Failure to
do this, throws unnecessary strain on
Page 12
the stomach and robs it of its vital
periods of rest. As most diseases can
be traced to gastric disorders, the importance of this is obvious. Tea, coffee, alcohol, and tobacco will find no
place in the family that is living for
health, strength, and happiness.
Another essential to health is a good
circulation. Moderate, natural, out-ofdoor exercise daily, stopping short of
actual fatigue, will ensure this. The
more time spent in the fresh, open
air, especially in springtime just after
the dark days, the better. But the
body must be clothed sensibly, no part
being left unduly exposed. It is no
exaggeration to say that hundreds of
yruma women yearly enter an untime-
ly grave, while others are rendered
chronic invalids for life, from undue
exposure alone. Open necks, thin
shoes, and silk stockings are, to say
the least, very inadequate protection
against the chilling rain and wind of
winter and early spring. Our aim
should be to keep as well as possible,
and not to see how far we may transgress the laws of health without reaping the reward of our folly.
Elimination of waste products is an
essential to the maintenance of health
in the human body, in the same way
as correct lubrication is necessary for
the smooth running of an engine. The
body is best kept free from impurities
by drinking two or three pints of pure
water daily between meals and by a
diet containing a large proportion of
natural fruits to secure a regular, daily
action of the bowels.
Sound and refreshing sleep is extremely important both for mind and
body. This is especially true in these
days of anxiety and worry. Eight
hours must be the minimum, and
there is little doubt that the more that
is taken, the longer the body will last.
In these days when the insidious
working of bacteria is coming more
and more to the light, we must not
T.CS.
overlook the importance of keeping
the mouth and teeth clean. A large
proportion of germs enter the body
through the mouth and many of these
could be destroyed by using an antiseptic tooth paste after each meal, and
especially before retiring.
Critical Periods of Life
While these points apply to almost
all the family, the young and older
members deserve a little extra consideration. Two of the most critical periods of life are youth and middle age.
In one, the body and mind are growing and developing; in the other the
full vigor of life is waning.
bone-forming foods, such as cereals
and grains. As a rule it will be found
that the tendency of a child's appetite
is against flesh-foods, and it is a grave
mistake for parents to try to overrule
the child in this matter. It is only after
the pure, natural taste has become perverted that flesh-foods are desired.
Foods should be chosen which require
considerable mastication. Regularity
and simplicity should be the keynote
with regard to the younger members
of the family.
Mouth-breathing is a very serious
and prevalent habit of present-day
children. No pains or time should be
spared to teach the child to breathe in
and out through the nose. The head
and legs need to be comfortably and
warmly clothed and not left bare as
is commonly done today. In this way,
many of the diseases from which children so frequently suffer may be avoided altogether. Many diseases of later
years, such as rheumatism, are also
prevented.
The principal dangers of middle age
may be summed up as over-eating and
insufficient exercise. The tendency of
most people between forty and fifty
years of age is to lessen their activities,
either in work or exercise, without de-
creasing their intake of nourishment.
In most cases the result is that the
blood pressure rises and. the individual puts on a certain amount of superfluous flesh. This results in a dangerous condition which may give rise to
heart failure, apoplexy, and kindred
diseases.
Very often it is found that when
this stage of life is reached, that the
nerve force is spent, chiefly owing to
worry and wrong habits of living. As
far as possible it should be the aim of
parents to cultivate a placid and optimistic temperament and to avoid the
spirit of worry and complaint. It will
be surprising what a difference this
will make to the happiness of the
home circle and in the still later years
of life.
Auto-Suggestion as Aid to Health
Very few people realize the influence that the mind exerts over the
body. Much may be done for cases
of "nerves" by taking a firm hold of
the will and fighting hard against depression and imaginary diseases and
complaints. Many persons are sick
and ill because they refuse to be well.
If these would throw off the fads and
whims which bind them, and take up
a hobby in the fresh, open air, they
would not only find health returning,
but would discover in life a joy which
they had hardly dreamed of before.
Finally, in order to maintain a truly
happy home circle, the members must
be willing—to a certain extent at least
—to sacrifice their own interests to
those of the family as a whole. It will
not be fully realized until later life to
what extent selfish whims and cherished fancies can spoil not only character, but also the harmony of the
home. All such things, therefore,
should be discontinued early and the
mind trained to reach higher planes
by losing sight of the small and the
insignificant in contemplation of the
noble, the pure and the high ideals of
life. Given health and the above conditions, not only will happiness reign
in the family, but a circle will be
formed which will be a credit to the
home and a blessing to others.
HE who fears criticism is hopeless.
Only those who do things are criticized. The idler is lost sight of in the
march of events, but the doer is
watched and criticized.
• To be happy a family should be
healthy. To have health there are
health rules to be followed—proper
food, exercise, and plenty of fresh
air. Fortunate the family that can
spend much time in the out-of-doors.

Since I was sixteen years old (I
am now sixty) I have been taking
laxatives, and now it seems as if
nothing works. Kindly advise.
It is rather difficult to advise one what to
do after fifty years of cathartics. I think
you should stop the use of cathartics, and
if you can get results no other way, take
an enema daily. You might try some
psyllium-seed preparation, taking two teaspoonfuls three times a day in a little water
after meals. A tablespoonful of lactose in
fruit juice or milk would also be laxative.
Get yourself a four-ounce rubber-bulb ear
syringe and some mineral oil. Warm the
mineral oil and, with the syringe, inject four
ounces of it into your rectum and retain it
overnight. You could do this at bedtime.
This will keep the stools from being so dry.
Eat a laxative diet, such as I am enclosing.
If infection of the intestinal
tract is the cause of arthritis, what
can I do to clear up the infection?
X rays show that I have a sluggish
gall bladder.
Many cases of arthritis are ascribed to
intestinal infection, but this is more or less
a difficult thing to prove, and is often assumed when the evidence for such an assumption is not of the best. If your gall
bladder is diseased definitely and has stones,
the best way to rid yourself of the infection
would he to remove the gall bladder. If the
dye test reveals no stones, good evidence that
the gall bladder was the cause of trouble
might be supplied by a gall-bladder-drainage
test, with examination of the sediment.
So far as gall bladder diet is concerned.

Do We Want a Godless World?

C:hrist's kingdom must be established!
In the love of pleasure, in criminality,
lawlessness, and bestiality there is evidence of degenerating lives. The Saviour alone can re-create! In the economic world there is unrest and greed.
Only the love of God can change
men's hearts. Finally, in the church,
there is a disappearing faith in God.
Only the second advent can usher in
righteousness.
"I will come again." No truer promise comes to the twentieth-century disciples of the Galilean. If He has conquered our hearts, we shall be waiting
to receive Him. But we shall not be
ready for His advent if we love this
world more than we love Him. We
shall not prepare our hearts to meet
Him until we grow tired of the sin,
the suffering, the selfishness, of our
age. Then we shall pray the Lord's
Prayer in all sincerity, "Thy kingdom
come." John echoes that petition in
His prayer, "Even so, come, Lord
Jesus."

investigation by all professing Christians.

many such are used. In the past a fat-free
diet was used, with the idea of not stimulating the gall bladder and thus by promoting
muscular relaxation, to relieve the pain.
Today, except where stones are present, a
fat-containing diet is being used, along with
bile salts, with the idea of stimulating the
gall bladder to functon and thus return to
normal. You might take a tablespoonful of
olive oil three times a day before meals, and
a third of a glass of rrenm with vnur rnpalc
with some bile-salt preparation" to see if
these would help. Of course your doctor
should prescribe these for you.
What would be the symptoms of
cancer arising from piles?
Theoretically, cancer can arise from any
chronically irritated portion of the body.
However, for it to arise from hemorrhoids
is rather rare. On the contrary, for a cancer
to be mistaken for a tumor or hemorrhoids,
and to be so considered and treated is all
too common. Hemorrhoids are smooth, easily movable masses which protrude from the
rectum and which tend to itch and bleed.
With malignancy there occurs a hard, nodular, ulcerated growth, which would tend to
bleed. This would most likely give some
pain, although not necessarily. Rather than
trying to determine yourself whether there
is any trouble of that sort present, you
should have your doctor examine you.
When urine touches the skin and
causes itching, could it be that there
is too much acid or salt in the system?
The fact that your urine irritates you may
mean (1) that you are not drinking enough
water and thus the urine is too concentrated,
(2) that it contains abnormal constituents
such as sugar, or (3) it may mean that you
have some infection or infestation that
should he taken care of. A visit to your
doctor and a pelvic examination, a vaginal
smear, and a urine test would be desirable.

these pagan doctrines. The young
ministers, desiring to be up-to-theminute, began to preach these theories
in their sermons.
The preachers began to tell us that
the Law was done away with at the
death of Christ. "It was nailed to the
cross," they said. "We are not under
the Law but grace," they boldly declared. "You do not need to keep the
commandments any more," they told
their congregations.
The people who sat in the pews began to do a little thinking. If there
is no law, there is no such thing as
sin, for "sin is the transgression of the
law." i John 3:4. If there is no God,
no sin, no law, no fear of a punishment later, why worry about wrong
doing? If there is no law, why worry
about stealing, lying, killing? This is
good logic isn't it?
The shepherds of the flock who
should have protected them from the
wolves in sheep's clothing, betrayed
their trust and led the innocent people astray. We are thankful some
ministers have defended the Bible and
have held up its precepts daily to their
people.
Some ministers have also taught
their people of an eternal, ever-burning hell, into which sinners are cast
and in which they burn throughout
eternity. This is not reasonable nor
Biblical, and has made a lot of unbelievers. We have also been taught that
man goes to heaven or hell the minute
he dies. One minute he is with us,
the next in heaven or hell. If he goes
to heaven he may converse with those
who are left behind. This doctrine has
laid the foundation for modern spiritualism.
In some lands across the seas these
philosophies have gone farther than
they have in our land. They began
there, and have had more time to show
their fruits. In some of these countries the Bible has been banned, religion has been suppressed. They prohibit religious worship. Their churches are torn down. They have tried to
make their land a godless land. Is it
any wonder that the younger generation do not hesitate to plunder, to
murder, to destroy? They do not believe in God. They have been taught
from babyhood that there is no supreme being, no ten commandments,
no law, no standards of right and
wrong. Might is right. So they go
forth to plunder, to kill and to destroy.
They murder women and. children.
They have no sympathy, no fear, no
regard for life. This is the result of
their pagan philosophy.
The blessings which we enjoy here,
religious and civil liberty, freedom of
worship, freedom of the press, and
many other of the fruits of democracy
are a result, the fruit of the Christian
religion. Take away the Bible, and
many of our privileges, our liberties,
our blessings go also.
We have already absorbed too much
of this heathen philosophy. It has
brought about a breakdown of the
home, an increase of crime. If there
is no law, and no sin, no standard of
right and wrong, why should we worry
about robbing banks, breaking the
sabbath, committing adultery, lying
against our neighbor? The Christian
virtues, love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, come with the
Bible and a change of heart.
In brief, many of the world's trou-
bles, war, bloodshed, crime, are the
fruit of modernism, evolution and
other cults and isms. Mankind needs
to get down the good old Book, wipe
off the dust, read it, study it, believe
it, live it.
We have tried to lift ourselves by
our own bootstraps—to leave God out
of the picture. We have felt we could
run our world alone. We have failed,
and are about to destroy ourselves.
Many thinking men and women fear
for civilization.
God still lives. His law is eternal,
everlasting. To break it is to sin. To
disobey brings a penalty. Christ died
to save us. We cannot save ourselves.
We cannot live without God.
The way to cure a disease is to remove the cause. We need to get back
to God.

• Canadians eat about 3%2 pounds of

the United States the per capita consumption is about between five and
six pounds, and in Great Britain 13

• Canadians are smoking more tobacco than ever before. There has been
an increase from 37,842,000 pounds in
1929-30 to 47,330,000 pounds in 193839. We wish this were making us a
better nation, physically, mentally, or
spiritually. In this time when men
and women need to be physically fit,
it is certainly of no benefit to us.
• Canadians are spending quite a bit
of money to make themselves better
looking. The factory price of toilet
preparations made in Canada in 1028
was more than eight million dollars.
Of this $300,000 was for manicure
preparations, bath salts, $120,000. We
doubt if the modern girl is better
looking for this expenditure, but they
think so. Painting the pump won't
purify the water. We wish we were all
as interested in cleaning up our hearts
as we are in looking after our faces.
• The Bible record tells us that Nebuchadnezzar ate grass for quite a long
period of time, and some who are
skeptical question how he could live
on grass alone. But scientists now tell
us that 12 pounds of the grass which
your lawnmower cuts contains more
vitamins than 340 pounds of all other
fruits and vegetables. Now scientists
are talking of powdering the grass and
putting this powder into our foods,
thus giving us more of the precious
vitamins we need.

It is a native of the High Andes in

• It is mosquito time again. There
are in Canada about 65 different species. We are told it is the female that
does the biting. She may drink twice
her own weight of blood and it takes
her about ninety seconds to become

protect us from this annoying insect
have been recommended. Among
them are oil of citronella, oil of cedar
and oil of lavender. The Canadian

one part, concentrated pyrethrum extract, two parts, and castor oil or olive
oil, five parts.
