Aquatic Programs
Mini-CAT
This NOVICE program is a part of the Cougar Aquatic Team competitive swimming program - a USA Swimming program that
has been based in Haddam-Killingworth for the past 18 years. It is designed to introduce the sport of competitive swimming
to children between the ages of 6-13. While allowing the children to both learn and have fun, the focus of the program is
to develop the technical stroke skills, advance the level of swimming, enhance fitness levels, and introduce the children to
competition. The program is primarily coached by Mike Krajewski, Head Coach of CAT. Beginning Thursday, October
2nd, practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for MINI-CAT swimmers only, and on available Sundays, the
MINI-C.A.T. swimmers will practice with the C.A.T. 12/U age group swimmers. The session will end the last week before the
February school vacation. In the Fall, practices will be 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Practices may start
at 5:30 after Thanksgiving, depending on pool schedule. Practices may vary at times due to the pool schedule and changes
will be posted on the website. Participants must be able to complete 2 laps of freestyle with rotary breathing, have a working
knowledge of a second stroke, and should have completed a full lesson program. All participants must be USA Swimming
members, which C.A.T. will process with registration to the program. For first time USA Swimming members, a copy of a
birth certificate must be submitted with registration. Membership is renewed on a yearly basis. The cost of the program is
$425 (which includes the $55 USA membership fee). Fees are non-refundable after 2 weeks of the start of the program. An
additional fee of $50 escrow is required if your child wishes to compete in meets that are available to MINI C.A.T. swimmers
to cover the costs of entry fees for competitions. Any escrow fees not used will be returned at the end of the season. For
further information, please visit the website at www.catswim.com or www.catswim.com/minicat. Registration is online
at www.catswim.com and should be completed by 9/6/08.

Excursions - Day Trips
Strawberries, Chocolate & Wine 
Departure from the HK area with a coffee stop enroute to
the Hudson Valley in New York State. Our first stop will be
the Torches on the Hudson Restaurant. You will not
find a finer dining view of the Hudson River than that of this
beautiful establishment. Torches boast the East coast’s largest
non-institutional salt water aquarium, as well as 30-foot high
gas lighted torches used to lure the boaters. Today’s menu
includes a choice of Grilled Salmon Filet, Chicken Marsala,
or N.Y. Strip Steak with a roasted garlic demiglace. Your
meal is served complete with all the trimmings, including a
mouth-watering dessert.
Then we’ll continue to our final destination, Baldwin
Vineyards for a “gourmet” afternoon. Upon arrival,
we’ll sample its fifteen award-winning wines, including
Chardonnay, Brut Champagne, Merlot, Riesling, Port,
Strawberry and Raspberry Wine. The tasting is accompanied
with an individual plate of strawberry shortcake, double
chocolate brownie, chocolate dipped fresh strawberry, and
NY cheesecake topped with Black Raspberry and marinated
fresh strawberries. You will also receive a copy of their “Top
Ten Ways to Enjoy Strawberry Wine”. After the tasting, you’ll
have some time to explore their store and gift shop; maybe

HK Recreation...the Benefits are Endless!
2008-09 HK Recreation After-School
State Licensed Care for children in Grades K - 6
Call 345-8334 for more info!
The HK Recreation Department sponsors After School Programs at Burr Elementary School, Killingworth Elementary
School, and Haddam Elementary School. The programs provide care for children in Afternoon or Full Day Kindergarten
through 6th grade (students in grades 5 & 6 will be bused to the elementary school of your choice). The programs are
designed to accommodate any children who are physically handicapped. Program is for students attending Region #17
Schools.
The programs operate daily from 2:45 - 6:00 pm (KES, BES, & HES). On scheduled half-days of school (including
Kindergarten Minimum Days), the program begins at 12:30 pm and ends at 6:00 pm. Children may be registered
to attend on either a part-time or full-time basis. A special vacation child care program is offered on most school
holidays and vacations (Veteran's Day, Teacher Professional Days, February and April School Vacations). The
program does not meet on days when school is cancelled or dismissed early due to weather or other emergencies.
The program curriculum is realistic and diversified. The types of activities offered include: arts and crafts, organized sports
and games, free play (indoor and outdoor), homework assistance, computer use, dance, special rainy day activities, and
periodic field trips. The curriculum strives to meet the varying needs of the different children and their respective ages.

Sam t year!
The 2008-09 Fee Structure is as follows: las
Full-Time: Full-time fees are calculated each month, based on the number of school days. If you register full-time (4
or 5 days/week), the fee (based on 20 regular school days) would be $230 per month (1st child) and $130. (2nd child).
The number and length of school days vary per month so the rate will change per month.
Part-Time: The Recreation Department must be notified each month of specific days your child will attend. Adjustments
in the days a part-time child attends may be made by contacting the Site Director! If you register part-time (child attends
1, 2, or 3 days per week), the fee is $14 per day (1st child) and $10 per day (2nd child.) Discounts for additional children
are available.
All payments are due the fourth Friday of each month and will cover the following month. There is a $5 per day late
payment fee for any payments not received by the fourth Friday of each month. Payment notices will be handed out
the third Friday of each month and parents have seven days to submit payment.
There is an annual processing fee of $15.00
per child. (Maximum of $30.00 per family)
Recreational Scholarships are
available for families in need.
