How to reach CFEL: 1. How to get to the DESY campus How to reach the DESY main gate: (walking distance from main gate to CFEL roughly 1km) By train To Hamburg Altona station Continue by taxi, traveling time approx. 15-20 min. Or continue by bus line 1 (direction ‘Schenefelder Holt’ or ‘Rissen …’) directly to the main entrance of DESY (bus stop ‘Zum Hünengrab/DESY’), traveling time approx. 25 min (5 Stations). Alternative: continue by S-Bahn (local city train) line S1 or S11 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen (2 stations). Then go on with bus line 1 (direction ‘Schenefelder Holt’ or ‘Rissen …’) to bus station ‘Zum Hühnengrab/DESY’ (5 stations). On foot: leave the city train station at the Waitzstrasse exit, turn right at the bottom of the stairs, turn left onto Waitzstrasse, right onto Gross Flottbeker Strasse and follow that road directly to DESY (after crossing Osdorfer Landstrasse it’s called ‘Hühnengrab’), walking time approx. 25 min. If the train only stops at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (main station) continue with S-Bahn (local city train) line S1 or S11 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen and follow the instructions above. By plane From the Hamburg airport Fuhlsbüttel: Continue by taxi, traveling time approx. 40-50 min. Or continue with city train line S1 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen station). Then go on with bus line 1 (direction ‘Schenefelder Holt’ or ‘Rissen …’) to bus station ‘Zum Hühnengrab/DESY’ (5 stations), traveling time approx. 60 min. By car Exit the Autobahn (A7) at HH-Bahrenfeld. Arriving in Hamburg from the South: turn left onto the main road (Osdorfer Landstraße). Arriving in Hamburg from the North: turn right onto the main road (Osdorfer Landstraße). Then turn right onto Notkestraße. The main entrance of DESY is the second road on the left. How to reach the DESY side entrance The side entrance of DESY is located on Luruper Chaussee. The bus line 2 stops there (bus stop DESY). The side entrance is open for motorists from Monday till Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and closed on weekends. It is open for pedestrians and cyclists at all times. If you come by plane or train and use the S-Bahn (metro) to ‘Othmarschen’, you can continue with bus line 1 (direction ‘Schenefelder Holt’ or ‘Rissen …’) to ‘Trabrennbahn’ (3 Stations) and walk from there to the side gate (5 min.). 2. From the entrances please use the DESY area map. Note: The CFEL building is located closer to the Side Gate than to the main gate of DESY. Unfortunately the side gate is only open for motorists from Monday till Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and closed on weekends. (in the future opening times may change due to construction activities).It is open for pedestrians and cyclists at all times.
