What is it?
With the March 2010 firmware release, many of the latest HP LaserJet products HP will provide a new
page counting methodology known as “Print Usage Tracker”. The “Print Usage Tracker” feature will be
an optional page counting feature which can be enabled if desired by the product owner or
administrator.
Today’s current page counting methods were designed to enable efficient service and support. The Print
Usage Tracker feature implements new page counting methods which are more aligned with today’s job
accounting needs. Advances in firmware technology now allow for these changes.
The administrator or owner of the product(s) has the option either to enable the new counting method or
to do nothing. If the new counting method is enabled the device cannot return to the previous
counting method. It is important to understand this. If the feature is not enabled, nothing will
change on the device and it will continue to count pages as it originally did from the factory.
This document will provide an overview of how the Print Usage Tracker feature will influence a products
page counting capabilities. Device administrators and product owners should review this information in
order to make an informed decision whether to permanently enable the new counting behavior or to
stay with the original factory counting behavior.
What will change if the new page counting method is enabled?
If the new page counting method is enabled, the products behavior for incrementing duplex page count
information will change. This page count information is viewable from two places: The printed Usage
Page and the products Embedded Web Server (EWS) Usage page.

The information below provides an explanation of what values change and how those changes will be
counted on both Usage Pages. All of the changes listed below apply to both the printed Usage Page
and the EWS Usage Page. See Figure #1 and Figure # 2 for sample Usage pages with the changes
noted to match the bullet points below (A, B, C, etc.).
NOTE: The examples provided are a representation of a Usage Page for an HP LaserJet Multifunction
Device. Changes for Single function printers will be very similar to what is presented below where
applicable.
Usage Page Changes
A) Duplex counts for Mono and Color will count only sides where toner has been applied and will
not increment for sides that do not contain toner.1
B) The Duplex Mono Column count value will only increment by a value of one for each side of a
duplexed sheet of paper where Mono toner is applied to the page. (Example: If only one side of
a sheet of paper has Mono toner applied, the count will increment by a value of one. If both
sides have Mono toner applied, the count will increment by two.) 1
C) The Duplex Color Column count value will only increment by a value of one for each side of a
duplexed sheet of paper where Color toner is applied to the page. (Example: If only one side of
a sheet of paper has Color toner applied, the count will increment by a value of one. If both
sides have Color toner applied, the count will increment by two.) 2
Additional Example: A three page document from an application is printed in duplex
mode. The first page of the document contains color. The second page and third page contain
black text (K) toner only. The document is printed on two sheets of paper and includes one side
with Color toner (C, M, Y) applied (Page 1), one side with Black toner (K) applied (Page 2), one
page with Black toner (K) applied (Page 3). The last page of the second sheet of paper is left
blank because there are only three pages in the document. As a result, the Color Duplex count
will increment by 1 and the Duplex Mono count will increment by 2.

This does not apply to copy jobs. Copy jobs scan images into the copy pipeline using a CCD scanner. When this process is
performed, it is similar to taking a picture of the original. Because of how this technology works, the device does not have the
ability to determine whether the original contains an image on the page and therefore if a blank page is copied, the copy
system will still count the page as a Mono or Color page based on the original setting for the copy.

NOTE: Most products support the Duplex Blank Pages Feature to increase the throughput speed of the device. Products that
support the feature and have it enabled will not duplex jobs that contain one sheet of paper with toner only applied to the front
side of the sheet. (e.g., 1 sheet of paper with an image on page 1, and page 2 left blank) Due to this behavior, the Simplex
count will increment by one instead of the Duplex Count. This feature is enabled by default and can be accessed through the
Control Panel at Administration >> Device Behavior >> Tray Behavior >> Duplex Blank Pages (MFP Multifunction Devices) and
from the MENU button >> Configure Device >> System Setup >> Tray Behavior >> Duplex Blank Pages (For single function
devices)

D) The Duplex Unit value has been changed to the single side Letter or A4 equivalent value (same
as Simplex “Units” values) to reflect the new counting method described in the bullets above for
A) B) and C).
E) Only pages with toner applied to them will be counted in the Mono and Color Simplex and
Duplex columns. Because of this, the Duplex 1 Image columns will no long increment and will
always contain asterisks.
F) The “Scanned (Copy, Send & Fax) section (Multifunction products only) and the second page of
the Usage Page will not be affected by this new functionality.
Changes mentioned in bullets A- E will also be applicable to the Embedded Web Server Usages
pages seen in Figure #2.

In accordance with the new methodology, specifically the changes described above in bullet points B,
C and D, the Duplex page counts on a device will be remapped when the Print Usage Tracker feature is
enabled. Values in the “Duplex” Mono and Color column will be doubled and values in the Duplex
“Units” column will be halved to reflect the new methodology’s focus on duplex sides. Values in the
“Total” column will not change.

How is the new page counting method enabled and what is
needed?
1) Verify your product supports the new feature and that your product has the necessary version of
firmware to enable it.
NOTE: A quick glance at the product matrix below will indicate if the new functionality is
supported in your product and the version of firmware that is required to obtain the feature.
Functionality support will only be available for those products listed in the matrix. If your product
is not listed, no support will be provided.
2) Access the products Embedded Web Server (EWS) acceptance and activation screen
by selecting the “Settings Tab >> Security >> Device Security Settings” (See Figure 3 for an
example of the screen)
3) If the acceptance and activation screen is not available, you will have to update your products
firmware to access the screens. (If it is available, jump to step 4) If it is not, go to the Supported
Product Matrix section of the document below to learn what version of firmware is needed and
how to obtain the latest firmware. After updating the firmware return to step 5.
4) Review the acceptance screen so you understand the Terms and Conditions and feel comfortable
with them.
5) If you are comfortable with the acceptance statements and how the new counting functionality
may or may not affect your HP device or product use model then choose to enable the feature.
As stated previously it is very important to understand that once enabled the device
cannot return to the previous counting method.
a. Select “I Accept”
b. Select “Enable the Print Usage Tracker feature on this device”
c. Press “Apply”
IMPORTANT NOTE: This feature may also be enabled through HP’s Device management software
called HP Web JetAdmin. If interested in enabling this functionality using Web JetAdmin it is
recommended that you access the HP Web Jet Admin support pages for information on updating WJA
to version 10.2 Service Release 2 (version 10.2.63313) or greater. You can access the Web Jet
Admin support pages by using the following URL: www.hp.com/go/webjetadmin

Supported Product Matrix
To obtain the latest firmware for your product access the support pages for the product by visiting
www.hp.com/go/support. Once on the SUPPORT AND DRIVERS web page type in the Product Name
of your device (e.g. HP Color LaserJet CM3530 MFP or Model number CC520A) in the “Download
drivers and software (and firmware)” section of the web page to help you navigate to your products
firmware page. Once you have located the software download page, select the “Cross operating
system (BIOS, Firmware, Diagnostics, etc) link to obtain the latest firmware.
Update your products firmware using the instructions contained in the readme file for the firmware
image.
