What Is Microsoft Private
Cloud Fast Track?
MICROSOFT PRIVATE CLOUD FAST TRACK is a reference architecture for building private clouds that combines Microsoft® software,
consolidated guidance, and validated configurations with HP technologies—including compute, management, network, and storage—
as well as value-added software components.
Built on the Windows Server® 2008 R2 Hyper-V® technology and Microsoft System Center solutions, Microsoft private cloud offerings
can help customers and service providers build dedicated infrastructure as a service (IaaS) environments that transform the way
they deliver IT services. Specifically, Microsoft Private Cloud Fast Track solutions provide a turnkey approach to delivering scalable,
preconfigured, and validated infrastructure platforms for on-premises private cloud implementations. With local control over data and
operations, IT can dynamically pool, allocate, secure, and manage resources for agile IaaS. Likewise, business units can deploy line-ofbusiness applications with speed and consistency using self-provisioning (and decommissioning) and automated data center services
in a virtualized environment.

on-premises private and hybrid clouds
Microsoft and HP deliver agile private cloud computing through an interoperable hardware and software platform based on standardized reference
architecture. A private cloud from HP can greatly reduce time-to-value for virtualization infrastructure investments because it unites shared compute,
network, and storage resources into a flexible, cost-effective solution based on off-the-shelf components. The reference architecture defines a common
set of requirements to help IT consolidate hardware platforms into an environment that is more manageable, better used, and less consumptive.
Why HP?
HP AND MICROSOFT ACCELERATE YOUR JOURNEY TO THE CLOUD with a
turnkey virtualization solution that includes integrated management—from infrastructure
to applications. The HP VirtualSystem VS1 for Microsoft® offering can help you
reduce costs, increase agility, and mitigate the risks that come with deployment of a
virtualized environment.
VirtualSystem VS1 delivers a preconfigured virtualization solution for mid-sized customers based on ProLiant DL380 rack mount servers. It includes
HP LeftHand 4500 storage, A-Series switches, Microsoft Hyper-V® (for server virtualization), and Microsoft System Center integrated with HP
Insight Control (for systems management). With HP Factory Express services for hardware configuration and Start Service for on-site deployment,
VirtualSystem VS1 eliminates the need to rack, cable, and configure virtualized infrastructure on your own, and enables compliance with HP and
Microsoft best practices. The VS1 comes in base and extended options. The VS1 base is “upgrade ready,” with adequate power and networking
infrastructure to scale over time to the VS1 extended configuration. It is designed for resiliency and predictable, smooth deployments.
HP makes it all simple with a factory-integrated solution that can be up-and-running in 10 days or less, with on-site HP Start Service included. Plus,
HP Technology Services provides a wide range of expert virtualization and cloud services to help you develop and implement your cloud strategy.
In short, VirtualSystem VS1 is a robust virtualization solution built with leading components and delivering integrated management from HP and
Microsoft, as well as on-site deployment services and three years of support.
Compute: The VirtualSystem VS1 solution can improve server utilization, decrease deployment times, and make high availability and disaster
recovery affordable for a broad array of workloads. VirtualSystem VS1:
• Uses the HP ProLiant DL360 as its management node.
• Can be configured with either 2 or 8 HP ProLiant DL380s as virtual hosts.
• Has 96 cores and 1.5 terabytes (TB) of memory.
network: Redundant 1 gigabit (Gb) and 10 Gb networks are based on the HP A-Series switch. The A-Series offers an unmatched combination of:
• 1 Gb and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) port density.
• High availability architecture.
• Full Layer 2 and Layer 3 dual-stack IPv4 and IPv6 capabilities.
Storage: The HP LeftHand 4500 G2 provides storage with capacity ranging from 14.4 to 57.6 TB. LeftHand storage area network (SAN) systems
deliver enterprise functionality that can:
• Enhance virtual environments.
• Simplify management.
• Reduce costs.
• Ensure that crucial business data remains available.
Microsoft Private Cloud
Fast Track Architecture
The solution includes HP hardware and
architecture that are configurable based on
purpose, size, and environment. It also supports
the operating system, virtualization, and
management capabilities offered by Windows
Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V, and System Center.
With System Center, IT can
proactively manage both physical
and virtual systems—on-premises
or hosted; across applications,
data, and security—using unified
monitoring, common interfaces,
and consistent policy.
The server fabric consists of
similarly configured, swappable
server blades that can be replaced
for upgrades, repair, and capacity
changes. Automated load balancing
limits service interruption.
Windows Server Hyper-V decouples
applications and data from the hardware
layer, enabling workload-independent
virtualization and management of the
server computing environment.
COMPUTE
NETWORK
STORAGE
Network traffic for applications, clustering, and other
services is handled by a grid of high-speed switches
(and/or Fibre Channel, iSCSI) to provide exceptional
I/O bandwidth among the fabric nodes.
SAN/NAS resources are shared
among all servers in the fabric,
although they can be
dynamically allocated to specific
workloads or hosts.
Private Cloud Technologies
Customers can take advantage of the cost savings of virtualization through Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V. Multiple server roles can be consolidated
as separate virtual machines on a single physical machine that runs different operating systems in parallel and uses the power of x64 computing.
A cloud and data center management solution, Microsoft System Center 2012 provides a common toolset to manage private and public cloud
applications and services. This solution:
• Spans physical, virtual, and cloud computing models with common management experiences throughout.
• Provides comprehensive, end-to-end management for infrastructure and applications, including interoperability for heterogeneous environments.
• Offers compelling economic value.
