Ransom Attack Targeting Apple Products - Change Your Apple ID Password SSO Alert Priority High
From Stay Smart Online 27 May 14
(http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/alert_service/newsletter/ransom_attack_targeting
_apple_products_-_change_your_apple_id_password_sso_alert_priority_high)
Apple device and Mac users should be aware that they may be targeted by hackers
who lock you out of your device before demanding payment of a ransom.
In recent hours, a number of Australian Apple users have reported the ransom attack
targeting their devices.
The information available is limited and may be updated as more information
emerges.
With the possibility that this attack is linked to your ‘Apple ID’, affected users are
advised to reset your Apple ID password as soon as possible.
Users not affected may also consider changing their Apple ID password as a
precaution.
Your Apple ID is your username for everything you do with Apple. It is used for
identifying you as a user for most Apple products including iTunes, all your Apple
devices, iCloud, the Apple Store and others.
At present many users are reporting that their phones or systems lock unexpectedly,
they receive an email from ‘Find My iPhone’ and a message on their screen stating
that their device has been, ‘Hacked by Oleg Pliss’. The message said that to unlock
their device they should pay a ransom via PayPal, emailing the payment code to
lock404[a]hotmail.com.
Currently there is only speculation about how the attacks have been carried out.
Apple has not yet responded officially.

s_should_expect_app_upgrade_and_account_validation_sso_alert_priority_high)
The Popular online music streaming site, Spotify, has confirmed a breach
(http://news.spotify.com/us/2014/05/27/important-notice-to-our-users/) of its systems
and data.
It states that only one user’s data was accessed and this did not include password,
financial or payment information, but it did not specify what information was
accessed.
As a precaution, Spotify will be requesting that ‘certain users’ validate their username
and password.
Spotify is also planning to release an update for its Android app in coming days.
Users of Spotify on Android should apply this upgrade as soon as possible.
Stay Smart Online also encourages anyone with concerns about the security of their
account to logon and change their password as a precaution. You should change your
passwords for all of your online accounts regularly as a matter of good practice,
choosing a strong and unique one each time.
Spotify has stated that Windows and iOS devices are not affected.
More information
Spotify has provided additional information and questions and answers
(https://support.spotify.com/se/problems/#!/article/downloading-android-update) in a
blog post on its website, including advice on checking your version of Spotify on
Android and how to change your password.
