JuniorTukkie students commit themselves to a Community Garden Project during National Science Week Sci-Enza, the Science Centre of the University of Pretoria and the JuniorTukkie Programme started a community garden on the Hatfield Campus in association with the UP Botanical Gardens and the Student Governance staff. Ms Rudi Horak, who is part of the project team, said that the United Nations has also declared 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming to highlight the importance of Agricultural Science to ensure food security for all. Members of the JuniorTukkie Student Society The aim of this project is to assist financially challenged students by allowing them to harvest food from the vegetable garden for a meal for themselves or a hungry student, friend or family member. Fresh vegetables will also be harvested once a week and distributed via the Student Governance office. Members of the JuniorTukkie Student Society committed themselves to this project by providing assistance with the maintenance of the garden. Seed South Africa (Pty) Ltd (SAKATA) has also provided seeds and seedlings for this garden for the first year. Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. NATIONAL BENCHMARK TEST (NBT): Click here if you need assistance with your preparation for the NBT. ________________________________________________ After three years of science and fun, fifty Grade 12 learners in the UP with SCIENCE Programme had their last meeting at Tuks’ Hatfield Campus on Saturday, 2 August 2014. Fifty learners are selected annually to take part in a three-year programme (from Grade 10 to Grade 12) which includes monthly Saturday meetings and a project week once a year. The Programme is aimed at increasing young people’s interest in, knowledge of, and skills in science. The University of Pretoria Client Service Centre Private Bag X20 Hatfield 0028. The “UP with Science Group O”, as they are referred to, really challenged each other when they took part in an “Amazing Race” and in a fun way, revised some of the activities of the last 12 months. They were also challenged to work out a timetable for a BSc first-year student and to find a specific book in the library. One “pit stop” of the challenge was in Bookmark, a bookshop on Campus where each team member left the shop a scarf richer to remind them of their own ‘Bookmark’ on Campus. JuniorTukkie and Sci‐Enza, the Science Centre of the University of Pretoria attended this year’s Techno X from Monday, 11 August to Thursday, 14 August 2014. The theme for their exhibition stall was “Tuks Community Garden" including 3 000 small plants donated by Seed Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd (SAKATA). After Techno X, these plants were handed out to the Sasolburg community to plant in their gardens. Learners who are part of the UP with Science Programme, learned what the different departments in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences have to offer and even done some basic research and getting a better understanding of science communication. Various educational games were also offered. The “LEGO” and “How to grow your own food" workshops held by Sci‐Enza interns, were very popular amongst the visitors.
