Research /Practice Innovation • Innovation occurs naturally in the HPSS through the work of its employees. • It could take a number of forms: ¾ novel treatment ¾ new diagnostic ¾ new or improved device ¾ new drug or its new use ¾ data ¾ software ¾ training material ¾ a treatment protocol ¾ a new management system etc. Intellectual Property (IP) Protect Disclose Technology Transfer (Consideration) Technology Diffusion Innovation Licensed, Assigned Sale or JV Healthcare Benefits (Free) Publication, Conference, WWW, etc To develop innovations, IP must be available, unpublished and protected 1 Types of IP * • Four main types: – Patents – Trademarks – Designs – Copyright • Copyright © 2006 CRSC • Technology Pie Many other types: – – – – Performance rights Trade secrets database rights semiconductor topographies – Plant breeders rights – conditional access technologies Copyright © 2006 CRSC Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Innovation in NI • World’s first mobile defibrillator. • 1965, Royal Victoria hospital, a team led by Prof Frank Pantridge, converted a mains defibrillator to operate from two car batteries in the back of an old ambulance – 70 kg • Invention was the forerunner of the portable defibrillator saved the lives of “n” patients over the past 40 years. • The technology had significant IP associated with it and was protected by a family of worldwide patents. • This IP protection contributed significantly to its successful exploitation.
