HSE LIBRARIES ONLINE A QUICK GUIDE TO MD CONSULT WHAT IS MD CONSULT? MD Consult provides evidence to assist in answering clinical questions by drawing on information from a range of sources: — — — — — current journals, including the Clinics series and other leading titles medical reference books practice guidelines drug information patient handouts Full-text coverage includes more than 50 medical reference books, 80 journals, 50,000 high quality images, 1,000 clinical practice guidelines, 10,000 customizable patient education handouts, and prescribing information for 30,000 medications. All resources are provided by Elsevier, a leading US publisher in the health and medical sciences. HOW TO GET CONNECTED To log on to MD Consult, you will need to use your personal Athens username and password. All persons employed by the Health Services Executive in Ireland are eligible to apply for an Athens username and password which enables them to access a range of full-text journals, databases and electronic resources hosted by HSE Libraries Online. Follow these steps to connect to MD Consult: Go to the ATHENS LOGIN area on the HSE Libraries Online website at http://www.hselibrary.ie/ For first time users: Register online for an Athens username and password by clicking on Register Here. You will be asked for a valid HSE Employee number and prompted to fill in an online form to complete the Athens registration process. Once this form has been submitted you will receive your personal Athens username and password by e-mail. For all others: Enter your Athens username and password in the ATHENS LOGIN box on the left-hand panel of the webpage Select MD Consult from the list of available resources by clicking on the MD CONSULT link. On your first visit only, you will have to complete a short Elsevier registration form SEARCHING MD CONSULT Select the part of MD Consult you wish to search from the first drop down menu eg. All Sections/Books/Journals, MEDLINE/ The Clinics/ Patient Education/Drugs/Guidelines/Images/News… 1 Type your search term(s) in the next dialogue box and click SEARCH. Operators such as AND, OR, and NOT may be used to build more complex searches. By default, a search includes common alternate endings of words, such as ”—s,” ”—ies,” ”— ing,” etc. The asterisk symbol (*) may be used to truncate search terms. Example: ”diabet*” retrieves diabetes, diabetic, diabetics, etc. The single line search results summary is provided just under “Results” for the search just executed and it separates search results by resource type and indicates the number of records found in each category. The MD Consult thesaurus will automatically add closely related terms to your search phrase, which will in turn retrieve greater numbers of results — click SEARCH or press ENTER on your keyboard for Results — You are presented with an option to expand the search so that the entire site is searched for your keyword(s) just under “Results” — Also, the option is provided to view the MD Consult Recommended Results for your keyword(s) which lead to further options to Refine Your Search and to Patient Education and Practice Guideline Links To view results from any given book, click on its title. The book opens with your search keywords highlighted. Click on your preferred result(s) to view the relevant chapters or extracts. You may also browse individual books: — click the BOOKS tab at top of screen — titles are organized by Alphabetically and by Speciality. Select your preference from these 2 options. — to view any given book, click on its title. Click on the FULL TEXT symbol to retrieve the full-text of any available article in HTML or PDF to retrieve a PDF of the article. Click on FIND SIMILAR ARTICLES to retrieve articles similar to your chosen article. It is not possible to browse individual journals in MD Consult. NEWS The NEWS section provides access to the latest healthcare news from MD Consult editorial staff and Reuters. PATIENT HANDOUTS There are almost 10,000 patient handouts that can be used to educate patients about their medical conditions and treatment. You can also add your own personal information (address, contact information, office hours, etc.) to the top of all patient handouts, and insert specific patient instructions at the bottom of each handout.
